Progressive Settles Rate Quote Complaint

Progressive has an appealing ad campaign and presents itself as a hip, cool and -- for lack of a better term -- progressive insurance company. Maybe it is but the consumers whose comments appear in this section would beg to differ.

A few of the more recent complaints ...

Troy of durant, OK May 21, 2009

I Got my policy with Progressive Insurance on Monday on my Hyandi Sanota. The car was in excellent condition. On Wednesday my wife was driving and came to a stoplight. The car driver behind her was talking on cell phone and attending her baby in the back seat and smashed into our car pushing our car up under the truck in front of us. We called progressive from the hospital where my wife was and they were extremely helpful. On Thursday they picked up the car to take it to their shop in Sherman TX. We got the car back completely repaired and looking and running as good as new in 10 days, and that includes the weekend.

Jess of San Antonio, TX May 19, 2009

I called Progressive Insurance on 5/6/09 to cancel my policy and EFT. On 5/8/09 Progressive pulled money out of my bank account and keep giving me the run around about my refund. I was told on 5/15/09 that my refund would be in my bank account by 05/19/09. When the money didn't appear, I called and was told that the money would be in the bank by 05/22/09. Progressive has now had money that they were not authorized to withdraw from my account for 11 days and counting.

Kristine of Jacksonville, IL May 8, 2009

I was recently in an accident. I have been driving for eleven years without so much as a ticket or a minor claim. I had an accident due to a semi forcing me off the road. The compassionate police officer at the scene could tell it was not my fault, and I did not receive a ticket. However, Progressive really stuck it to me! Firt, they claimed I did not have rental coverage, even though I'm holding in my hand a policy that shows that I do. Aparently, when I renewed my policy with them, that "mysteriously" dropped. They're claiming I made changes to my policy. There goes 200 for a week of rentals. If that were not bad enough, they claimed that I am partially to blame and are "still determining" what they are going to pay. I'm sorry, but I was under the assumption that collision coverage covered the cost of damage to my car if I was in an accident. I've had to take out an additional student loan to cover the rental and deductible. I can't afford to pay for repair costs if they deny them. I'm so stressed out about this! I HATE THIS COMPANY!

lori of pembroke pines, FL May 7, 2009

I am going through a nightmare with Progressive direct insurance company. I have a serious and permanet injury. severed and reattached right index finger 3 surgeries and one year of hand therapy. permanent damage to my dominant finger

Steven of Tampa, FL May 1, 2009

My vehicle was struck while parked at the mall. I was not present and the other driver did not leave a note. I contacted progressive and they made an appointment for me to take the car into their service center for an estimate (5 days from date of damage). In the meantime, I took my car to two reputable body shops (one was the Cadillac dealership and the other a discount body shop). One estimate was 4,200 and the other was 6,200. I arrived at their service center and waited an hour and a half for the estimate. I was told that I would use their conceirge service which I told them that I wanted to control the repair of my car and to issue me a check to pay for repairs. Their estimate for repairs was 931.00. Over 3,000 less than my cheapest estimate. I refused the check and asked them for another estimate. They told me if I used their conceirge service it would only cost me my deductible (500). They were also estimating it would take three to four weeks (I have no rental coverage) to repair where both body shops estimated a week. After calling my claims rep he said (in so many words) either I use the conceirge service or all I'll get is 931. Sounds a bit like extortion to me. I am going to invoke my appraisal clause and retain an attorney if needed

Lori of Post Falls, ID April 24, 2009

I had requested to cancel my auto Policy with my agent through Jesberger Ins., well before it renewed. I also emailed progressive myself to be sure this got done prior to having the renewal fee taken out of my bank acct. Well that was on 4-10-09. Progressive went ahead and took the money from my bank acct. and I still have not been refunded. My ins. agent says they are working on it, but still I see nothing.

This little error also cause my acct to be overdrawn and cost me over 200.0 in bank fees. I am not working now and this really hurt. I advise everyone do not use Progressive. They are not honest and I will not use auto pay anymore either. Bank overdraft charges costing more than 200.00

Thomas of Alto, MI April 22, 2009

A car which was on fire was driven onto my property and hit my truck which in turn hit my outbuilding, The car on fire burned in my drive until the police and fire dept. came to put out the fire. Progressive, which insured the car, has denied any responsibility for the damages.

Kambiz of Alexandria, VA April 21, 2009

Dealing with this claim representative was like dealing with a robot. This individual failed to explain the procedures used in their appraisals and their definition of what is considered a "total loss," as well as conducting a thorough investigation of the accident. Progressive simply looked at the police report, and made a brief phone call to the driver in front of me, and then decided I was at 100% fault. It appeared to me that they do the investigation as a matter of formality, and do not look at the big picture.

They obviously were trying to assign blame to me from the outset for the accident. I tried to explain to them that anybody would have hit the vehicle ahead of them like I had if that vehicle had slammed their brakes and switched lanes abruptly to avoid hitting the vehicle ahead of them, but they were stubborn and unwilling to listen. I asked them to defer their judgement of assigning a degree of "at fault" until after the court date, but they were adamant about assigning 100% fault to me. They even exploited their position on the issue stating that there could have been a child in the backseat of the car ahead of me! In their defense, I did talk to the supervisor who clarified some of the issues, but I was still very disappointed about how they handled this claim.

Also, the contract they sent so they could service the vehicle at their service site was signed by my father and not by myself. Had I received the contract, I would have re-considered even sending the vehicle to their service center. They also stated that if they repaired the vehicle themselves, they would not pay more than approx. 5k because of fees associated with salvage. The whole process seemed confusing, and their approach unfair. They are ultimately only concerned in my opinion to their bottom line, and not about the client's well being.

Daoyuan of Sugar Land, TX April 21, 2009

On 4/9/09 around 5:30PM, my car parked at 5th floor of my office parking building. Another car parked at 6th floor was leaking gas to my car's roof and doors. The building management called fire department to fix this problem. The next day, that car's owner gave me all his insurance information. His insurance company is Progressive.

On 4/10/09 I called them and sent them all pics I took. 4/15/09 the guy who worked on my case G. Widmier sent me an email and said he is waiting for his supervisor's decision. On 4/17/09, he called again and asked me to drive 7 miles to their service center, after I told him I have no time to do that, he said he will send somebody to check my car on Monday. 4/20/09 a guy came to see my car around 12:30PM, what he did is checking if the gas smelling is still in car (they wait 10 days to do this, and I washed my car twice) and took some pics. Since the damages to the paint not show yet, so they said they need to wait 1-3 months until the damage show up. So that's why they wait 10 days and then send adjustor to check the car, from the first day, they already made decision not going to accept any liability for this case. I saw Progressive Insurance advertising almost every day on TV, now I know how bad they are.
