Progressive Settles Rate Quote Complaint

Progressive has an appealing ad campaign and presents itself as a hip, cool and -- for lack of a better term -- progressive insurance company. Maybe it is but the consumers whose comments appear in this section would beg to differ.

A few of the more recent complaints ...

Scott of Atlanta GA (01/04/09)
I when to the Progressive office because they refuse to return phone calls or approve claims from my dealership/body shop. I was basically attracted be the manager Chris and escorted out of the building. When I called to ask him why he dealt with me in such a manner and then informed me that he was doing a criminal background check on me while we were talking on the telephone.

The dealer ship said they Progressive are withholding 5-10K dollars in supplemental l checks. My car has been in the body shop from 11/19/08, this is going to be 60-day without a car while I still need to get to work to pay the car note. Progressive is giving us and the dealer ship a hard time at every step. To put a number on it, it has cost at this point 4,800.00 due to their miss handling of this claim and I still dont have the car.

Tava of Sheldon IA (12/26/08)
My daughter was involved in an accident while backing out of her driveway. At the time she was separated from her husband and was not able to pay the auto insurance. Now the insurance company for the other ladies car is going to sue my daughter and has requested that my daughters license be suspended. She has a very good job and 2 small children. There were no injuries and no police report filed. This just seems to be unfair when both girls were at fault. The other girl was in a hurry that morning. Anyway, I just don't know how Progressive Insurance can do this to someone who is trying to take care of her children. There must be an easier solution to this, but Progressive won't talk to my daughter. She also got her insurance reinstated that day, but they wouldn't cover any of the damages for either vehicle.

As a result of the separation, my daughter had to move in with friends. Her vehicle involved in the accident was repossessed. She cannot afford to loose her job.

Erik of Corfu, NY December 16, 2008

Erik of Corfu NY (12/16/08)
I was in a hit and run accident on the day before Thanksgiving (Nov. 26th). I took the car to a body shop near my house which I'd heard good things about in terms of the quality of work, and they have been around for close to 40 years. When I talked to the claims rep, he gave me the sell on their network of body shops and how they prefer you go through them, with the prime selling point being that Progressive will guarantee the work. What he failed to mention was that if I declined, they would become extremely difficult to work with instantly.

MEMO TO PROGRESSIVE: The second I turn that offer down, you do not earn the right to stop providing me good customer service. Just because I choose not to go through your network of concierge shops that rank among the worst IN THE COUNTRY (JD Power & Associates 2007 Insurance Claims Study), and because I care about getting the job done right DOES NOT MEAN YOU CAN STOP DOING YOUR JOB.

So after I informed my claims agent that I would be staying with the shop I'd chosen, the process instantly became more difficult for me. The adjuster came out to the shop and argued that on my ONE YEAR OLD CAR, the door, which had warped slightly as a result of the rear end impact (at 55MPH mind you) was probably not caused by the accident. Right... So he cuts a check to me and my lienholder for my shop's estimate - deductible - the cost to fix the door and gives it to me. He claims there is a NY state law which requires them to protect the lienholder and that is why they need to sign off on it. BUT, this DOESN'T APPLY if you go through a concierge shop. So you don't protect my lienholder if my car is subject to inferior labor???? Very good policy.

So I mail the check to my lienholder Overnight Mail on the 26th of November, and they mail it back on December 4th. It is now December 12th. Still no check. Now don't get me wrong, I'm angry at the lienholder for sending a 3000 check regular mail and for taking their time doing it. But after 8 mail days, I would think I would have this check, and I think I'm safe in saying it may be lost. So I call my claims rep. He tells me to wait until Monday and if it isn't there, call him and he will come out the next day (Tuesday)and cut a check directly to the repair shop.

Monday comes, no check. I call my claims rep. He says he is going to talk to the shop and see if they will release me the car if I sign something saying that if the check isn't there by THE FOLLOWING WEEK that Progressive will write him a check directly. So what happened to protecting the lienholder? What happened to the next day? And WHAT HAPPENED TO CUSTOMER SERVICE???? My claims rep said they don't cut checks directly to repair shops outside their network because they have no guarantee the work was all done correctly.

I asked why they don't just come out and see for themselves. He said it is because they aren't qualified to see that. BUT HE WAS QUALIFIED TO DETERMINE THAT THE DOOR ISSUE WASN'T CAUSED BY THE ACCIDENT???? This cutting of the check directly to the shop was something they are clearly ABLE to do...but just something they chose not to do for me. I should not be punished for doing my research and choosing the best shop I could find for my relative new, but damaged vehicle to be repaired at. DO NOT DEAL WITH PROGRESSIVE!

Peter of Chicago, IL December 16, 2008

Peter of Chicago IL (12/16/08)
I notified Progressive Insurance to cancel my policy after I switched to a local insurance company. To my surprise I was still receiving bills. In June I contacted Progressive Insurance and they requested for a copy of my new police. I faxed them a copy. Their associate told me to call back in a week for update on changes in my account.

I call back in a week and their customer service associate told me my accounts have been updated. I ask the associate multiple times if I have any outstanding bills, the associate to me unequivocally, that I dont have any outstanding bill. Over the weekend I found out that I have a collection of 7.50 on my credit report, I contacted the collection company and I was told it's from my outstanding bill from Progressive Insurance. I contacted Progressive Insurance today, and I got a difference answers from an associate and his supervisor. Apparently the associate that I talk to in June failed to tell me I still had an outstanding balance of 7.50. Even though they admit that their associate provided me with wrong information, they are not preparing to call the collection agency that they made a mistake.

My credit score has move from 724 to 605 because this mistake. I have lost my private student loan because of this mistake. Please help me to rectify this grave mistake Progressive Insurance. Thank you.
