Nationwide Cancels 39,000 More Homeowner Policies

Sara of Oceanside CA (09/20/08)
In early July, 2008 I was on my way home from work and 5-6 cars in front of me came to a dead stop going 50-60 mph, and I was the last of 4 cars to collide. The 3 cars ahead of me drove off but my dream car was totalled. The case was mishandled from day 1, and my complaints made it escalate into the hands of the Master Claims Representative Gairinc. I was blamed for the accident though per the laws of physics that is impossible. Nationwide wanted me to settle for 4K less than trade in, 4,500 less than auction sold prices in so cal between 6/19-7/31, and 6000 less than private party sold prices.

I provided those facts with about 60 pages of documentation proving the actual cash value of my Prius to my adjuster. Yet their final offer was still 2,900 less than trade in and 3,500 less than auction , not to mention 5000 less than private party sold prices in my area. So the adjuster said my only option was Right of Appraisal if I did not except an inaccurate reflection of Market Value of my car. So I exercised my right of appraisal and notified her the first week of August.

The adjusters have all lied to me and tried to mislead me from day one. They almost tricked me into signing over the title in July, but my dad called me and told me not to do that. I'm still responsible for my car payments to Toyota, who they also lied to and told that we came to a settlement agreement in July and they were waiting for title paperwork from me. The lies go on an on. I have so much documentation I am going to file with the Insurance Commissioner. Really this should be a class action lawsuit, becuase they are breaking so many laws and I am almost homeless because of this, and they are doing this same thing to so many people due to refusing to accept their legal responsibility.

It's been almost 3 months and they still refuse to resolve this. They will not allow their appraiser to submit his paperwork - that's what the ins co's appraiser told my appraiser and so much more. He said he had no idea why nationwide gave his name. I still pay 185/mo for auto insurance and 550/mo for my prius, yet they will not settle so I can get a new car (I have no rental coverage) this has cost me 1000s and that does not include the medical bills.

I am in the market to renew my policy -if [they] do not take take vulgar commercial off the air - an old woman reacting violently after a minor collision - I will NEVER consider [their] company. Is there not enough random, rampant violence in our society? Thank you - an advertising/marketing manager in Texas.

Richard of Los Angeles CA (07/22/08)
I was rear ended by a hit and run driver. Since I carry uninsured motorist, my insurance company Nationwide became the responsible party to me. After taking 19 days to make a decision regarding my car (repair vs. total) they offered my 15k for a fully loaded 2005 Prius (with car pool stickers) that has under 30k miles and is still under warranty. This is 8k below the dealer trade in value! This car sells for 32k (if you can even find one...)

I interviewed several repair shops and was told repeatedly that Nationwide is the absolute worst when it comes to repairs - they insist on used or after-market parts and routinely intimidate repair shops into doing sub-standard work!! I also found out that Farmers allow for a 5000 premium on Prius' with the HOV stickers - Nationwide won't even acknowledge that there is market value associated with the stickers. (documented by many news stories including the Wall Street Journal, and quoted from KBB and other car resources) When Nationwide says Fair Market Value they really mean sucker, we got you.

Additionally they do not acknowledge diminished value (reduced value of a car in an accident) I might understand them telling me it is not covered under my policy, but to disavow any knowledge of these subjects what-so-ever is certainly not negotiating in good faith. They also refused to extend my rental car beyond a few days even though they took 19 days to make a decision! This company has taken every opportunity to nickel and dime me, consistently negotiated in bad faith, stalled and hedged and insisted on sub-standard repairs. Nationwide is NOT ON YOUR SIDE!

My out of pocket expenses are still growing. It's now been two months, the medical bills are growing, the car rental is adding up and I believe when it's all over I may be 5-10k in the hole. Please publish this on your website to warn anyone else who may be the next victim of this horrible scam called Nationwide.

I had been a customer of Nationwide Auto Insurance for more than 25 years with no accidents. Anyways, it was pouring rain and there had been an accident that put out the lights at other intersections. It was graduation night so when graduation got out my daughter was approaching the intersection, and my daughter got hit by a young gal who went flying through the intersection and who was not paying attention to the lights being out. My daughter's 07 Honda Civic with 30,000 miles was totaled.

Nationwide fanangled this repeatedly to the point that they offered us 13,000 for the Civic which was in excellent condition before. Boy, I would love being able to buy a Honda Civic for that amount! They said that the since the car was 2-1/2 years old, 30,000 miles was excessive mileage so they were taking off 4000 off the value of the car. I gave them lots of research but they refused to listen to any type of logic or reasoning. I tell you, to be a customer who has never filed a claim and get cheated this way - well I have another insurance company now.
