It seems like a good idea -- prepaid home maintenance, basically a service contract or extended warranty on your house.
The AHS booklet states, "Commitment to your total satisfaction" "That's why we back every job we do with the unique money-back guarantee shown on the back of your home warranty" ... "AHS guarantees that all approved covered service repairs will be completed to your satisfaction. If for any reason you are not satisfied with that service received, we will work with you until you are satisfied or we will refund the trade service fee."
Unfortunately, consumers tell us it often doesn't work out that way, as David Wood reports in his report, .
The complaints to the right break it all down into neat little categories ... whereas those below sort of sum it up.
Frank of Wilsonville AL (06/12/08) Another A.C. story concerning American Home Shield - I have now called 4 times and nothing has been done - their contractor says they have never received the faxed work order - and I'm on hold with AHS as I type this, trying to get them to fax the work order to me so I can make sure it gets faxed to the contractor. Oh - I'm off hold - so now I'm getting set up with a new contractor and a whole new work order. I'll be posting again in 3 days to update whether or not they actually did something this time!
And while I'm at it, [I think] the companies below are AHS partners (this info is readily available on the Internet - I'm not giving anyway any secrets), so I'll be steering clear of them! Richard of Florence SC (06/12/08) Air conditioner is covered under home warranty. Request was sent 6/4/08.It is now 6/12/08. Hvac repair company had been out numerous time between wednesday and saturday. Each time they came they said the problem was fixed. 15 minutes later the ac would be broken again. Saturday, Hvac repair guy came and said he located the problem part, but he had to cut out it. He said he would go get the part and be right back.
That was 5 days ago. No one has ever called me saying they were trying to locate a part. I have called them every day since monday and the answer I get is that they are still trying to locate the part and that it takes 3-5 days. Meanwhile, it is over 90 degrees in my house. My family and I cannot sleep in our beds. My wife is also 8 months pregnant. It is Thursday June 12 and I still have no AC.
Currently unaware of any physical damage done to furniture due to heat. Downstairs AC unit has been running nonstop due to upstairs unit not functioning. Laura Picton-Hildreth of Las Vegas, NV June 11, 2008

1 year child may be hurt w 100 + degrees temp - oover 500 in repairs Karla Ervin of Ridley Park, PA June 10, 2008
Karla of Ridley Park PA (06/10/08) I purchased my home on August 30, 2007 with the Buyer's protection warranty from American Home Shield. I have only used my air conditioner around four times since then. On Sunday, June 8, 2008, one of the hottest days of the year, my air conditioner stopped working. I am from Philadelphia and are in the state of a Heat wave. The news already reported that two people were found dead because they had no air conditioner in this weather.
I called and reported this problem to American Home Shield explaining that my house is 93 degrees inside and that I have jeliousy rollout windows so I can't even buy a window unit even if money aloud. I have two children ages 11 and 8. My oldest daughter has asthma and my youngest daughter has a rare respitory disease known as RRP Virus (which is a life threatening disease of the respiratory tract. The disease is caused by the Human Papillomavirus, also known as HPV. The virus causes tumor-like lesions to grow on the larynx and, in some cases, in the trachea and lungs. These growths can cause suffocation and death especially in this extreme heat wave (code red).
I reported that my unit was not working. American Home Shield sent a contracted company out to repair the unit. The service guy was here for about 3 hours and could not get the unit to work. He then said to me, he has another call that is an emergency because a computer lab has lost air supply. He then walked off and said he will send his boss to exam the unit. The owner of the Air Conditioner company came out around 9:15 pm and said that the unit was around 20 to 30 years old and the part would be almost impossiable to find.
I have been trying to move American Home Shield to get working on replacing this unit and they keep telling me that I can't speak to any employee that is in higher command and that they are still searching for this part. What is it going to take? My daughter to hyperventalate? My other daughters lungs to lock up? I have two dogs, a guniea pig and two gerbils, all which are suffering of extreme heat exhaustion.
Robert Wade of Tallahassee, FL June 10, 2008
Robert of Tallahassee FL (06/10/08) AHS strikes again. I wish I knew of this site before signing up. I had to pay 55.00 for some AC guy to come out and tell me my AC wasn't covered because of some B.S excuse. Then he tried to sell me a 900.00 coil cleaning... saying that after that service it may be covered but still probably wouldn't work. He didn't even check the compressor outside which was the problem. Thanks to a real AC guy and a hard start unit my AC is working great. Thanks for nothing AHS
