Dawn of Imler, PA March 10, 2008
Dawn of Imler PA (03/10/08) We purchased a double wide Fleetwood home from Family Homes of Altoona Pa and are still having issues with the home. Such as still having a problem with the flooring at the marriage line in the dining room and in the living room, some of the fir strips are coming away from the wall, cracks in the ceiling that were pointed out and taken care of the first time are re-cracking, the doors won't stay open (entrance way doors). The cabinet doors in the kitchen are crooked. There is also an issue with the siding in spots around the home that had been mentioned to the manufacturer and to Family Homes that was not dealt with.
The heating in this home is frustrating, you either freeze or you roast. There is no happy medium. We are basically not happy with the purchase of this house (date of manufacture was August 18th of 2006) and we have only been in the home for almost 2 years. Yes, someone from family homes would come out or someone from Fleetwood would come out to do some repairs, but it was like pulling teeth to get someone here. We just want to know if anyone else had any problems with their home like we did and what we can do to have it fixed. David of Stillwater, OK March 10, 2008
David of Stillwater OK (03/10/08) My wife and I purchased a Fleetwood home in 1999. We paid extra for many upgrades. There are too many problems to list. But here are a few of the major problems we have been having for the last 9 years. There is air leaking in from the windows, electric outlets, and under our baseboards, resulting in a high heating bill each and every winter. Our ceiling is cracking, our dishwasher leaks and many more small things like that. But the biggest problem of all is that we paid extra for 2x6 walls and they are sitting on a 1x4 floor board. So there is no outer support on the walls. We also have large holes under the cabinets, bathtub and showers. We have contacted fleetwood but they keep telling us there is nothing they can do about it and transferring me around to different people.
Machelle of Prague, OK February 24, 2008
Machelle of Prague OK (02/24/08) We purchased our Fleetwood Home in December of 2006 and actually got to move into it in January of 2007. From the first day we moved in we noticed problems, big & small, but were told a contractor would come out to take a look & fix all the problems on our work order, which ended up being about 3 pages long. The first contractor started coming out in February and would come once a week for about 3 months, until one day we noticed every time it would rain, our living room floor would get wet.
The next time that contractor was out, he pulled the outside siding off & the wall on the inside & we discovered a hole the size of a soccer ball all the way through. You could see outside. It had been leaking water for 4 months, and our boards & floor was moldy. Finally we called Fleetwood & they said they would send out another set of contractors from Texas to fix all the problems. They came out & stayed approx, 4 days, fixing things. My kitchen floor had to be replaced, my cabinets were not in line, my walls had holes in them, my carpet was mildewed, My doors, windows, light switches, and electric outlets leaked air (& still do), just to name a few problems.
When they left everything appeared to be ok, however, within a month I noticed everything was back to the same. My windows & doors (etc.) still leak air, my house creaks, I now have dishwasher problems, my battens won't stay on - they continue to pop off, the marriage line in my home has pulled apart to the point there is a big gap, noticable to the naked eye, my trim doesn't match up, & looks awful. My carpet is tearing apart. I could go on & on, but I will stop. All in all I will say I am not pleased with this home purchase and now I'm stuck with a 30 year mortgage on a home I can't fully enjoy because it's falling apart every day more & more. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE A FLEETWOOD HOME AGAIN!
Because of the fact my doors, windows, light switches etc leak air, my pocket book has suffered. My electricity bill has topped out at 400.00 this winter, not to mention, we still cant keep it warm in our home! John of Sadsburyville, PA January 24, 2008
John of Sadsburyville PA (01/24/08) I bought a new double wide fleetwood in 3/05. I had many problems with it. I would have thought that by 1/08 (3 years later) that my problems would have finally stopped but not so. This was my 1st mobile home purchase and my 1st time living in the suburbs and having well water supply instead of city water as I was used to. One day while I was at work, the property owner decided to work on the well pump and shut my water supply off (no advance notice). As it turned out, he had a problem and did not get the pump fixed until 16 hours later! Little did I know that when he turned off the water supply that my hot water heater drained itself back into the feed line and emptied. All the while the electric power was on. Finally when the water was turned back on, I noticed that we did not have any hot water. I noticed that the circuit breaker was tripped and I looked around and did not see any problems and turned it back on. We had hot water for a while but later I noticed that the circuit breaker was tripped again.
I was not sure what to do or who to call so I started calling electrical contractors to come out to check my electric panel. I had to call several as a lot of them said they did not work on mobile homes!! Finally when one came out he took the cover off the side of my water heater and his first comment was did I turn the water supply off. I said no but the landlord had his contractor working on the pump house and he turned it off. He said the problem was that the water heater was empty and the power was on and it was trying to heat water that was not there, and burned up the heating element. The circuit breaker kept blowing because it was trying to tell me that something was wrong. Finally after replacing the part and handing me a hefty bill for emergency service he said to me that didn't they tell me when I bought the home that if I had well water, that I should get a one-way valve put on the water supply? I said no one ever told me that but now I know what I needed to do to prevent this from happening again! If only Fleetwood or Clayton homes would have told me I would have done it, as I did read everything that came with my home. Hopefully from reading this some other folks can keep from having the same problem as I did.
I lost time from work, damaged heating element, a hefty repair bill and an expensive lesson learned that could have been prevented if only someone had told me. Donna of Waxhaw, NC November 25, 2007
Donna of Waxhaw NC (11/25/07) We bought a brand new Fleetwood home almost 5 yrs. ago. We signed the papers in Aug. and in the fall appeared a huge crack. Our salesman said for us not to worry, that the manufacturer would send someone out to fix it. About a yr. later, another severe crack appeared adjacent from the main one in the kitchen. And from then on other cracks have appeared. The first thing we did was to contact Fleetwood. They sent someone out. The contractor scraped, re-puttied and resprayed the ceiling. We went through 5 contractors. The cracks still came back. I have every contractor that Fleetwood ever sent out here on video. Every repair made has been a waste of time.
I hired a structural engineer; he found more things wrong than we ever knew about. I sent out the necessary papers of complaints to the dealership and Fleetwood. Hired a lawyer almost 3 yrs. ago and can't seem to get any further. My lawyer said for me to get 2 contractors and have them give estimates on what the damage is and what it will cost to repair. He is trying to find an appraiser for us, but no one will give us the time of day. According to my lawyer, without estimates I have no case on this home. I'm trying to file a complaint with BBB and now Consumer Affairs. I have contacted the Manufactured Housing Authority and am waiting to hear from them. I'm totally disgusted with the whole thing. It took us 21 yrs. to get out of a cracker box and into something bigger. Now we have a 30 yr. mortgage and a structural engineer who says that if the ceilings don't fall in on you first, the floors will. Anything else I can do?
