After a c-section, I began complaining of fever and pain at the incision site. My complaints fell on deaf ears and by day 4 in the hospital I was faint, dehydrated and my stomach exploded. Prior to this, I had a 103 temp. and the hospital staff insisted I be discharged stating there is nothing we can do. I had a red circular pattern surrounding the incision which kept spreading. How can this go unnoticed by hospital staff who check the incision site several times a day? I refused to leave. At this point, I was so dehydrated, they poked me 16 times to try and administer antibiotics but were unable. They opened me back up and cut some tissue and informed me that I had an infection. I ended up staying a total of 9 days. I was then put on a wound V.A.C. for the next month and daily visits to wound care. My husband had to take off of work for a month to care for the baby and me as I was too weak and unable to care for him myself. It has been 3 months and I am still not back to work and still feel a burning sensation at the incision.
The amount of physical pain from this infection was huge, I often wonder whether I will be able to work with this as I must wear a 30 lb belt at the incision area. My husband, as I stated took off a month's worth of work. The Hospital bills are significantly more due to this hospital acquired infection. How about mental damages? I do not want to ever have another child again due to this nightmare. I missed out on breast feeding and care for my child the first month of his life. I have gotten the run-around from the hospital, physicians, and insurance companies. I resent the fact that everyone involved tried to cover it up, ignored it, and refused to give me information regarding my health.
