I purchased a Whirlpool Model #ER2CHMXPLO4 refrigerator on August 24, 2007 on September 24, 2008 my repair man says the freeon will not flow through coils and it will be expensive to repair.

Starting to sense a trend here. We purchased a Whirlpool side by side (Model # ED5HG) from Best Buy in August of 2003. A couple of days ago, I awoke at 2:00 AM smelling something electrical burning. I went down to the kitchen and the smell was intense. There was also a haze hovering near the ceiling of the kitchen. I checked everything electrical in the vicinity of the kitchen. (However, I didn't check the refrigerator. I never expected that to be the problem.) I then called the fire department as I surmised I had an electrical fire that was either occuring between the floors or in the walls. Meanwhile, my wife is getting our two young children up in order to vacate the house.

Just after I called, I heard some odd noises coming from the refrigerator. The sound was similar to that of a welder welding iron. I then knew the fridge was the problem. I pulled the it away from the wall and unplugged it. The fire department arrived and verified the problem. A relay attached to the compressor had failed, melted, and fused the electircal prongs of the compressor together. I shudder to think what would have happened had we not been home. Because of the intense smell, the fire department also ventilated the house. A week later, we can still smell the problem and have two kids who are afraid of going to sleep.

We purchased a new refrigerator the next day and had it delivered. I was going to have the delivery company take away the damaged refrigerator, but the delivery person said that I should keep it and call Whirlpool. I took his advice and called. Whirlpool had a technician there in less than 24 hours. I asked the technician if what he saw surprised him, and he said No! The technicians must know something about Whirlpool's inferior quality that the average consumer doesn't. Even though the refrigerator was just out of warranty, Whirlpool covered all the costs. The bill was in excess of 650.00. However, my wife does not want the old fridge back in the house. Anyone interested in purchasing a used Whirlpool?

Around October of 03 we purchased a new side by side Whirlpool refrigerator/freezer with water filtration and in the door ice and water. On Jan 5 2006 our ice maker stopped working and we spent 255.00 to replace the motor and ice maker. On March 4 2008 our ice maker again stopped working. I called Whirlpool. They offered us a discount on a new refrigerator. We spent 298.11 on the replacement of the ice maker and motor and spent 141.30 on new water lines and a new valve in the basement to improve water flow to the ice maker to prevent further problems. The original valve and water line came with the refrigerator.

On Sept 8 2008 we had a technician again come to the house because the ice maker was again not working. The recommended fixes will cost 220.15. Whirlpool is willing to pay for the cost of one of the parts. The repair company is actually going to replace one of the parts as a defective new part since it went bad so quickly. Currently we have been advised to replace the module and the fill valve.

So far we have spent 694.41 on replacing and repairing ice makers for our refrigerator. After subtracting the 80.00 part that Whirlpool will pay for we are about to spend 140.00 more dollars. The total will be 834.41.

The Whirlpool refrigerator is less than 2 years old. The whirlpool ice make freezes ice cube on top of ice maker; the cubes do not tilt off the maker. Whirlpool customer service said that no where on the internet does Whirlpool give instructions on removal of the end cap which would enable the customer to determine if the whole unit needs to be replaced. Whirlpool also said that it even does ptovide any help to authorized repair men to access any help on the ineternet.

Whirlpool misrepresents, in my opinion, help it gives to the customer before the customer has to to bug a pig in a poke when something goes wrong.

Francisco of Lanham MD (09/02/08)
I just bought a brand new broken refrigerator on July 21, 2008. I tried contacting the dealer, and they said to deal with Whirlpool itself. The dealer tried to shift the blame on me and said that it was my fault that the refrigerator was broken. I called Whirlpool many times to rectify the problem. The company said that there was nothing they could do except send a repair man. Whirlpool said that they will not take back this refrigerator even though I had just bought it.

The first guy just came into the house looked at the refrigerator and cut a line. He left immediately cutting the line without any explanation. I ran after him to find out what was wrong. The repair man said that he would have to order a part and it will not come in for a couple of weeks. A second repair person came with an attitude. The person did not want to hear the problem and did not care about my situation. Plus both times they ordered a part, the wrong part came in.

The third repair man came and he was able to fix the problem in two visits. Plus he found an additional problem. The water line inside the left door was damaged. I did not expect to wait for six weeks before I can get a working refrigerator. I kept calling about the wrong part and nobody seemed to understand or really care. The third repair man said that Whirlpool made a mistake with the part numbers and that was why the wrong part kept coming to my house.

During the whole six weeks, Whirlpool denied any faults and would not help me in getting a working refrigerator while this one was being fixed. It amazes me that I could buy a new refrigerator with so many problems and get so little help. I chose to buy a Whirlpool product which is an American well known brand name. And sadly enough, I still got treated like I had bought a foreign name brand. I told Whirlpool I could have bought another name brand, their response was that it was my choice. During this whole ordeal, nobody took responsibility for the refrigerator and they kept shifting the blame. Several family members and friends know of my ordeal with Whirlpool, they said that they are guaranteed not to buy Whirlpool products because of their poor customer service.

I had to spend a lot of money on groceries because I had no refrigerator. All my food kept spoiling and I had to eat out a lot. I cannot believe that I spent 1000 on a refrigerator and I still had to spend more money because of it.
