Bought the Whirlpool Gold Side/Side in July 2003. Since then the ice machine motor has had to be replaced, the water filtration system completly replaced (I keep the filter new so that was not the problem), and the starter has gone twice. What a piece of junk!!

I bought my whirlpool appliances; washer, dryer, side by side refrigerator, dishwasher, and stove in 1991 when we moved into our home. I have never had a repair on ANY of them. I will buy Whirlpool again when they start to die. The only problem I have had is when we don't use the icemaker for a week or so, the line freezes and I have to use the hair dryer to thaw it out. I realize new appliances now have fancy digital readouts and other ridiculously expensive replacement parts, so maybe the key is to find low tech versions of what you want.

Donna of Abingdon MD (10/23/08)
I bought a new Whirlpool Gold side by side Refrigerator from Best Buy Store on 2/10/04. On 10/18/08 I smelled a burning smell and later on discovered that the smell was the 4.5 year old refrigerator. All of my food in the freezer had defrosted and food on the fridge side was not cool. I called whirlpool because in my manual it stated that the compressor and sealed parts were covered up to 5 years. Whirlpool referred me to A&E Facoty Service.

I made an appt. for them to come out on 10/22/08 between 1-5. I took off from work early so that I could meet them at my home. At 5:30 I receive a call that he was on his way from York, PA. He arrived at 6:40 certainly not the 1-5 that had been promised. He believed that it was the relay switch that had gone up, so of course this was not under warranty. It cost me 70.00 for him just to show up to the house. He wanted to charge me 44.21 for the part and 224.00 for labor - a grand total of 270.86 with tax.

This is so absurd that 1. the refrigerator would go up in the first place and 2. that he would have the nerve to charge me that kind of money for a 5 minute job.

My other complaint is that when I emailed whirlpool to ask them about all of the food that went bad they are not covering that either. I am very upset with Whirlpool and A&E Factory Service and I want to make a complaint to you about them. Maybe other people should know how they operate before they buy a product from them.

All of the food in my freezer defrosted and had to be eaten in a day or two or thrown away and the stuff in the fridge got warm and had to be thrown away. The fridge is not even 5 years old!

Raymon of Lincoln City, OR October 16, 2008

Raymon of Lincoln City OR (10/16/08)
I bought a new manufactured home with a refrigerator included. I put the Whirlpool refrigerator in storage and purchased a new side-by-side for the home. Now I have an addition on the home to put the Whirlpool refrigerator as a back up. The refrigerator is two years old. The problem is the factory forgot to install Freon in the unit. The refrigerator runs but does not get cold at all. In fact the unit will get warm. The dealer where I got the home will not do anything about it. He is only responsible for the home itself not the appliances.

There is no damage of any kind. The appliance is brand new and nver been used until I tried to use it. It was never tried (turned on)while still at the dealer.
