Barbara of Knoxville TN (12/01/08)
I purchased a GD5RHAXN800 Whirlpool refrigerator/freezer 4 years ago. After reading the other complaints I have figured out that the lights going out and the buzzing noise when I open the door is in the circuit board that probably needs replacing. However, after reading of several fires caused by electrical wiring shorting out, I am fearful of even keeping the refrigerator.

I requested to be contacted on my cell phone, and I was contacted at the house and was forced to juggle the day since the window given for the service call was 9 to 5. When asked for a better window, none could be given. My fridge is less then 5 years old, and has a warranty of up to 5 years on all internal sealed components, as explained in my owners manual. I have a problem with my ice maker (came with the appliance). I called to check warranty status, and was told nothing could be determined unless someone came out to look at it, and it would cost me 70.00 to have someone come out. They came out and said the bad part is a part failure: needs ice maker module. Should I wish to authorize the repair, the cost would be 315.00 to repair. (When I bought this appliance new, it was a little over 700.00).

I did not authorize the repair, and paid the tech 69.22. I was able to get a replacement motor module and replaced the defective one on my own; and have the same results. The ice maker will not draw water and if I manually fill the trays it will not make new ice. I have tried calling Whirlpool to complain about the cost of the repair, as well as the poor quality of the components and all they would do is offer me a discount on my next whirlpool purchase. What upsets me most, is the fact that they were trying to sell me a part that my appliance does not need. I still have a non working ice maker (let me add, when it started, I replaced the water filter cartridge, and also unplugged the fridge for 24 hours to eliminate the possibility of the problem being water frozen in a water line). I should also note that the appliance dispenses water and ice thru the door and both of those components work.

So I am the same place I was before the service call, only 70 dollars less in my wallet. I still do not know what the defective component is in my appliance, and what they were trying to tell me it was clearly was not the case. As far as all internal sealed components being covered, this is very misleading as well and I am upset about that as well. I have tried to settle this with Whirlpool (customer service?) and fall upon deaf ears. They go by the words of their service techs (in my case A&E Factory Service) and in my case, they made an inaccurate disgnosis, and did nothing more then take my money.

The Ice Maker came as part of the appliance when purchased brand new; and clearly is part of the internal components from the factory; unless I am mistaken, it should be covered by Whirlpool.

We bought the Whirlpool Conquest Gold Side by Side Refrigerator in July of 2004. Last week I noticed the food in the freezer seemed soggy and defrosted. The freezer had turned off and everything had started to defrost, and ice had not been made. I made sure the thermostat was set on the recommended 4 setting. The refrigerator section was cool, so it appeared to be only the freezer portion. I moved the dial to 5 and shortly after the freezer went on.

Later, all of our food was covered in a thick crystal of ice and had to be thrown out (approx 200). We thought it was a fluke, but a few days later we noticed hearing water trickling in the freezer like it was defrosting again. Sure enough all of the food was once again soggy! My husband unplugged it and plugged it back in and it started working. That is the end of this refrigerator. I am too nervous to trust it to keep my food cold and safe. I am happy because this refrigerator has been a disappointment since we got it. The design is impossible to work with, the narrow width of the shelves, it never fit half the food we had, the doors always closing on me, the freezer was so difficult to organize and get food out. I am disappointed that we spent a lot of money on this and had heard such great things about Whirlpool, and for it to break after 4 years? I would NOT recommend this!

200 estimated food lost Had to purchase a new refrigerator

We purchased a Whirlpool refridgerator at HHGregg aroung 2006. It's the kind wiht the freezer on top. We have had an issue from the beginning with the freezer spraying water down into the refridgerator part onto the glass shelves. Water accumulates so bad, we had to put a tupperware bowl in the back to try and catch all the water. It gets full each week and freezes so we have to empty it out. Has anyone else had this problem?

I purchased a Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator with ice maker from a Lowe's in September 07. Almost exactly one year later, the freezer stopped freezing, and only worked intermitently, at best. Then, about one month later (October 08) the freezer started working, but the refrigerator side started freezing everything, too. So now, as of November 2008, I have one huge freezer with no refrigerator.

When the freezer side wasn't working we lost at least 200 dollars worth of defrosted food. Now that the refrigerator side is only freezing food, we've lost about the same amount in ruined food that shouldn't be frozen (i.e. certain veggies such as lettuce, various soft drinks, cheeses, etc.)
