MTD Self-Propelled Lawn Mowers

Consumer Complaints & Reviews

Update on my 1-19-09 posting. Today I fixed MTD's mistake on the big red tiller. I replaced the tapered shaft with a 1" shaft and original pre MTD wheels. When I did this, I found that the wheel axle had also been shimmed wrong from the mickey mouse production line. Sadly, I found lots of metal in the bottom of the trans but parts were still OK. Beware of the new tillers. MTD takes every short cut they can and has ruined a great company name like the original Troy-Bilt in NY. My guess is MTD is getting parts from China and have unskilled laborers assemble them. They are truly lost.

On April 10, 2010, I purchased an MTD Yard-Man 190cc 21 Self-Propelled 2-in-1 lawnmower from Menards in Blaine, MN. The lawnmower was an off the shelf item as no boxed item was available. On April 20, 2010, I noticed a leak under the mower. I was told by Menards to take the mower to Dons Small Engine & ATV Service in Coon Rapids for repair which was determined to be caused by the front wheel drive transmission leaking fluid. Repair was covered under warranty determined by Dons Small Engine Repair.

On August 30, 2010, I took the mower back to Dons Small Engine & ATV Service in Coon Rapids again for repair because the mower was hard starting, running rough and rear wheels were wobbly. It was diagnosed by a mechanic: "Unit started and ran poorly, removed and disassembled carburetor, and found debris in float bowl." He recommended that the carburetor be cleaned and rebuilt, fuel tank flushed, fuel line and air filter replaced. Both back wheels are worn and rear left height adjuster is damaged. Total for this repair was $204.49 and I was told that it was not covered by warranty, and I will not cover these charges. Menards also refused to cover these charges. I did not receive a warranty card from employees of Menards for the mower.

I went to other stores since this happened to find out what kind of procedures these stores (Home Depot, Sears and Northern) used when dealing with customers and all of these stores procedures were that the warranties would cover the engines of their mowers. We were told by Menards that their hands were tied and could do nothing about it and Yard-Mans story was the same. This mower cost me $289 before taxes and after only 5 months of mowing I would have to pay for a $204.00 repair plus a $50.00 payment when I brought the mower to Dons Service so that would be $254.00, plus I had to rent a mower for two weeks waiting for an estimate from them so I am also out of money for renting a mower. It is not my fault for having shoddy workmanship from Yard-Man.

If you refer to the Internet, you will see many complaints on the Yard-Man products. I have owned different makes of lawnmowers over the years and have never had any problems with them. I am pretty fussy about my yard and take care of the equipment that I purchase, but if mowing my yard and cleaning the mower after each use is being negligent, then guess I am guilty. I feel that this is just one of those mowers that was not properly assembled and that Yard-Man should owe up to their workmanship and refund us for the mower.

MTD manufactures junk products under a number of brand names. Quality is a crapshoot with the odds in favor of the house. Bought a mower that worked well for two seasons then kaput and no reasonable repair. Try to get the lubrication instructions which are not part of the owners manual, have to pay and pay shipping. Bought a Toro weed eater and the line feed head throw out all the line in a matter of seconds, never worked out of the box. MTD call center response, "Gee, that's too bad." Took to warranty center repair who says its not covered and will cost. This outfit is a bad business for consumers and the environment but fills the big boxes with shiny junk at attractive prices. Just a waste of money.

I bought in 2007 an MTD at Walmart. I thought it was good deal, gears keep coming off. MTD keeps sending one with many small 1" bolts. The rep at MDT said it wasn't cost effective to build a good tractor. I finally gave up and modified gear, put hole and large bolt with washer. Now the transmission and belt failed. What piece of junk. I think MTD should take responsibility for a failure in the engineering and lack of quality parts. The government should make them take the product back, replace it with a better product, have recall and reimburse the consumers.

I purchased a new push mower May 2009 from Menards Store in Dundas, MN. I brought it home, read instructions, added oil then put in new fresh gas. I tried to start and the mower took forever. It finally started to run and let it warm up since it's new. I went to move the mower into the grass and it died. The grass is less than 3 inches long. It started again after 15 pulls. The mower is chugging and hardly running. I tried several times to get the mower to stabilize and run normally but it never happened! I called Menards to return for a different mower and they claimed No Refund whatsoever after oil has been put into the unit. I was told to take it to an authorized dealer for repair which is only 45 miles away so I did it. My time and gas dropped the mower off at Northern Hydraulics in Burnsville for repair. I never heard back from them for 5 weeks. This is summer and the grass grows. I called to verify if it was repaired.

My wife went up to pick up the mower and brings it home. I filled it with fresh gas, pulled it 20 times and it starts. It sounds like it's running half the speed as before but I'll give it a shot on the grass. The mowers running but when I pushed it into the 3 inches of grass, it died. There was no power. I tried 10 more times. Forget it! It was a pure junk. Do not buy any product from MTD LLC. Push Mower Riders, you name it. Look on the Label or paper work! I'm going to continue this battle forever through the internet or wherever I can post it and give a word of mouth to everyone along the way. I wish an attorney would see this and teach this company a lesson in a court of law. Please everyone, Do not buy a product from MTD LLC.

MTD is junk. I bought one of the MTD's from TSC and it keeps shredding belts. Warranty won't cover it. It is built so cheap I am scared to let my wife get on it because the frame could not support her weight although she would look good out there mowing grass in her moo moo. My mowers is the newest in my trailer park but it is also the biggest piece of junk. If something doesn't get done about this, the police are going to have one more domestic abuse case to deal with in my trailer park after I smack my old lady in the mouth to relieve my anger.

We bought a Huskie 46-inch riding lawn mower in the summer of 2007. In the summer of 2008, the tension bolt broke and it was still under warranty but it cost $50 to have it picked up and delivered to the manufacturer. Three weeks ago, the tension bolt broke again. Now, it has cost us over $600 to have it replaced as well as replacing new bearings and belts.

The mower only has 193 hours on it. We would like to file some sort of suit. We will send a letter to our state attorney's office concerning the matter. We will never buy another MTD ever. Our neighbor's John Deer is 10 years old and has not had one thing done on it except sharpen the blades and tune-ups.

MTD does NOT own Snapper. Snapper is owned by Briggs & Stratton and is still producing a top notch mower. MTD produces Cub Cadet, Cub Cadet Commercial, Cub Cadet Yanmar, Troy-Bilt, White Outdoor, Yard-Man, Yard Machines, Bolens, Arnold, GardenWay, MTD Pro and MTD Gold. As someone who works on the repair end of the mower business, MTD products are built on price, not quality. Unfortunately, to get a good quality mower, you will need to spend a minimum of $2000 to do so and I would not recommend the MTD line of products. Also would not recommend the AYP products (low-end Husqvarnas, Craftsman, Poulan, or Big Box store John Deere) as they are also not built for quality but are built to be affordable with a planned obsolescence of 2-4 years.

The idea is to get you to purchase another one every few years. Shop around for what the repair shops actually sell. ASK a person who does repairs. I've always been honest enough to tell people that some brands that we don't sell are great mowers. I work on nearly every brand of mower out there and we work on about 2500-3000 machines per year. The mechanics know what is good and what is sub-par.

Bolens Model 765. Letter to MTD. NO RESPONSE to my problem. I purchased this riding mower on 08-22-06 at Lowe's Home Center

at Juan Tabo in Alb. New Mexico for $907.37. The belts and blades were changed last year with FACTORY parts from Lowes. I am going on only my fourth season and the tractor has been used I estimate a TOTAL of 35 hours. I started having trouble as I was going to mow my yard and the tractor will not move in the forward position. The rear end has GONE OUT! Needless to say I am VERY disappointed! What can you do to help with the $600 it is going to take to fix a DEFECTIVE rear end? (as the MTD authorized service and dealer "Aragons" in Albuquerque stated!)

I purchased a self propelled mower in July of 2009. It is used only for trim work. In the fall, I had cleaned it up and drained fuel for winter. In the spring, I filled it with gas and tried to cut the grass, only to have the gas leak out. I took it in to authorized repair shop. They checked it out and said the carburetor was bad and MTD would not warranty it. The mower had less than three months use. No more MTD for me.

I bought an automatic MTD ride on new mower 3 years ago. It has 165 hours. During this time, I have replaced at least 6 belts at $56 AUD a belt. I replaced the forward gear and dog incorrect adjustment. I replaced the PTO clutch and PTO switch $740. Now after 2 hours mowing, it caught fire and burnt out the wiring harness. The mower has been sitting for 2 months out in the open at the dealer's premises. All previous work has been carried out by the dealer, who now states that they are too busy to inspect it. We have made repeated telephone calls and visits to the dealer's premises who states there are many more mowers requiring attention and repairs prior to our mower. A real lemon. Would you please look into this sorry matter on our behalf?

I bought an MTD snow thrower in Dec 2008, the mower has so few hours on it that it is still on its first set of paddles and is only on its second tank of gas. This year on its first run out. a weld joint on the auger came away, okay not happy, but stuff happens and I have a 2 year warranty. Went on the MTD web site and they directed me to my local dealer, so far so good, I get to the dealer and they want $30 to examine the machine and submit the warranty claim, not to happy being charged to simply process a warranty repair, but okay, a defective weld has to be a manufacturing fault, so itll get fixed under warranty, right?. Apparently not, I went to pick my machine up and was told the warranty claim had been declined by MTD, so on top of the cost last year I am now out of pocket a further $140. I wanted to appeal to MTD, but that company is locked down so tight all you cab get is automated responses and FAQ's from there web site. MTD isnt the cheapest on the market, there are plenty of other brands in the same price range, you can be sure Im taking my money elsewhere, I will never buy MTD again.

I purchased a Bolens walk behind bagging lawn mower 4 years ago from Lowes. I have a small yard and it is used very little. During routine mowing a few days ago there was a terrible noice and I found that a sheet metal shield bolted to the inside front of the blade housing had broken--apparently from a stress fracture--at a crease near one bolt.

The shield had been hit and mangled by the blade. I had never noticed this shield. Looks like the housing as cast didn't extend down close enough to the ground so the shield was added on. A piece of it was thrown back into the bag before the mower shut down. This is a dangerous flaw.

Lowes told me to call MTD. MTD successfully shunted me off to an email site. Their answer two days later was that this was my problem and they recommended a service shop near my house. Perhaps this is business as usual, but I think more concern should be shown. I asked MTD if I could use the mower without the shield (if I can loosen the bolts and remove the managed piece), and they offered no answer.

If nothing else, I'd like my safety complaint about this mower model 11A414 E765 to be registered.

I bought a Huskee Supreme 46" cut, model series 605 riding lawn mower made by MTD in May 2008. The big shield screw broke the 2nd month while I was mowing my yard. The parts supplier said he could not keep it in stock from so many people needing to buy new screws. The 90" belt has broken twice. At $30 a belt, I am trying to figure out why. I'm 64 years old, and I have had more trouble with this mower in a year, than any I have ever owned. There is a definitely a design/manufacture mowing deck problem that needs to be recalled, redesigned, and replaced for MTD riding mower owners. These mowers are not cheap and we deserve a reliable, working product. I would even put 38"deck under my mower if MTD would give me one, if it would solve the problem. PLEASE HELP US!

This is actually a problem I had a few years back with a new cub cadet lawn tractor. The second time I mowed our yard the engine started spitting and sputtering. I couldnt get it to run smooth so the dealer took it bac for repair and gave me a loaner. I thought it would be a guick turn around since I had spent so much money and it was bran new. After a few weeks the dealer told me that Cub cadet wouldnt give him the go ahead to repair it. I had to contact cub cadet to push them. Thats when I learned about MTD and their track record.

Toward the end of the summer I finally got my mower back and the motor has run ok except for the back fire when you shut it off( they say thats normal) Within a year the paint started bubbling and now 5 years later it looks like a 30 year old lawn mower. I dont know how much longer the deck will last. I break a 35 dollar belt every year but they say thats normal too.

I will never buy another product made by MTD. I paid a little over 3 grand for this machine I thought it would last me a life time. My dad gave me his 1972 john deer in 1990 and I ran it until I purchased this pieice.

I bought a 42" MTD yard Machine in May 2008. Two week ago, 29 Aug 09, while riding the machine the engine stopped and after checking the gas tank and finding it empty, put some gas in which quickly disappeared. I purched it from Home Depot and bough an extended warranty so I taught all was well on that front. However, Checking my warranty, I found that I had to use the manufacturers warranty because it was still under the 2 yr warranty by MTD. I read all their disclaimers on the warranty and fully believed I would be covered. They had a 1800 number to call for nearest service center. I called them and was told that it would cost me $40 for them to pick and deliver.

After receiveng the machine the repair facility said that they had to open up the engine to see why it failed before the warranty covers it. After 1 weeks the called and told me that I will be owing them over $100 because the engine is a seperate item form the rest of the tractor. I should have received a seperae engine warranty and manual when I purchased the machine.

The repair facility said that I should be using 89 octane and not 87 and that 87 is ethenol and has water in it. I played coye with other repair people in my area and it seem like this is a regular problem with the MTD people, hiding or misleading consumers with there warranty. Why does MTD mislead the public that it has a 2 yr warranty on the engine when it has no plans on honoring the warranty. I noticed that I am NOT the only one with this problem. I refuse to be suckered into another 100 plus dollars after paying over 1200 dollars for a bearly used machine.

Ever since I bought my MTDPro mower from Sam's Club 7/12/04, the self-propelled drive has slipped badly. While under warrantee, the authorized service location just kept suggesting I tighten the belt/clutch tension, which I did repeatedly. Out of warrantee, a service center replaced the belt but it kept slipping so I had to take it back. I've also replaced the belt 4 times myself along with drive wheel components that also failed.

Now, I believe my problem was probably caused by a defective design of the single steel bolt that holds the soft aluminum alloy transaxle housing to the rear of the deck. It had stripped the threads allowing the transaxle to flex, probably causing the pulley to come out of alignment with the transaxle. So all these years of unreliable, slipping drive may have been caused by this flawed design.

I'm completely dissatisfied with this particular MTD product. Though I'm aware the unit is out of warrantee, I asked MTD to replace the mower with a similar self propelled model with a reliable drive system as compensation for the years of trouble I've had with this unit.

How to start this since I have had nothing but trouble with MTD products. I purchased a log splitter first for over a $1000.00 it worked fine for 2 years an then refused to work was sent to the repair shop for 4 weeks and was told they did what they could and it would break again because of the machine itself , so now it has sat for over 5 years and has not worked.

Next I bought a TORO mower made by MTD they don't let you know that you are not buying a TORO just the name.TORO had a great reputation and you get these companies buying just the name and well it is crap. The mower since the first week I got was trouble. The push handle would not lock in place so the handle would be useless and would not allow you to mow. I found out that TORO was made by Murrey ,and murrey was made by MTD you do not know this when you buy it ,they just use the TORO name to sucker people in.The mower has sat in my Garage for 6 years now looking new since they told me I could take it to a repair shop that was miles away, and I would be given no date for the return.

I bought a power washer ,the name wass generac , I believe this is also a MTD product. It worked the first year giving me some trouble , the second year it was a real dog, it would loose power and I would break down the wand to make sure that it was not fouled. It also started leaking oil and that could not be stopped, I called them and they said they had a problem with one of the plugs mine was plastic they sent me a metal one ,which did not fix the problem.I use the power washer rarely since I know it will cause me trouble each time I use it so washing my siding is easier using a scrubbing mop and soapy water. The soap induction on the power washer does not work so I have to spray soapy water on the area with a spray bottle .The power washer is a piece of junk and well useless.

I bought a garden tractor a 24 HP model with the name of TROY BUILT. This tractor replaced a Craftsman tracktor that I had used for 14 years before my daughter used it and did not check the oil.Up until that point I had never had any trouple with the craftsman tractor, I changed the oil, blades and did tune ups on it and it was great.

The Troy Built mower purchased for $3200.00 was not made by TROY BUILT but was built by MTD. Another farce and deception that they used to get me to buy the mower. TROY BUILT was a good tractor when they made them as I worked for a golf course and they used them. The 24 HP, Automatic tractor. This tractor has been a nightmare .It gave me problems from the start. First it started dying before I could finish the yard ,I purchased 4 batteries for it thinking that was the problem I used to have to plug in the battery charger and let it sit for 4 hours before it would go again, found out it was the alltinator after taking it to a MTD repair center.

The Tractor stayed at the repair center for 3 months ,outside before they even worked on it I got it back with nuts and bolts missing and the dash was shaking apart, some of the levers have never worked which they were supposed to fix. Next the deck is a piece of junk, actually it is a hazard since pieces were falling off and getting hit by the blades. This year I continued to work on the tractor it cost me $50.00 to have the brackets rewelded since there was only one small tack weld that held the bracket on. The welder told me that the reason I had the problem was that they welding was not sufficient and that is why the brackets were coming off, also the bracket after they fell off were hit by the blades destroying them and causing a hazard for anyone in the line of fire if the blade hitting the bracket.

This repair cost me over $150.00 for parts (which take weeks to arrive) and $50.00 for the welding. After repairs to the deck it ran fine for about 2 months when there was a noise coming from the deck this time the center pulley sheared off at the center this took two weeks. Today I tried to put on the pulley and cannot get the nuts off to change it and found also that the bracket that runs across the discharge chute is hanging off on one side it needs to be welded. This tractor is a nightmare and when you talk to the customer service center of MTD you get snotty operators and I have had to call back 6 times one day since i kept getting cut off by them.

Also I told them I was going to get ride of the tractor and tell people about how MTD products are [bad]. He told Me "If I Tell people of the problems I will have trouble selling it,so I should just keep quiet about all the trouble ". I also have had to replace 7 belts and 3 sets of blades because of the parts that fell off and the blades hit and sent flying, as you know these are not cheep the cost of this has been over $500.00 .

This is a dangerous machine as when something falls off it and the blades hit it they send the metal flying. One spot in the back of the house has an area where a piece of metal hit the aluminum siding cutting it and destroying the siding. I make sure if I use this tractor no one is around because I am afraid of someone getting hit by flying metal.

I am now thinking of going out and buying another tractor since I cannot get through a month without trouble YOU CAN BE SURE THAT IT WILL NOT BE A MTD PRODUCT. ONE THING I AM REALLY UPSET ABOUT IS THE WAY THEY USE OTHER COMPANIES NAMES ON THERE TRACTORS AND THAT IS FALSE YOU ARE BUYING AN MTD PRODUCT, NOT TROY BUILT, OR TORO OR OTHER RELIABLE MANUFACTURERS THAT MTD BOUGHT THE COMPANIES NAMES AND PASS THEM OFF AS THOSE COMPANIES UNTIL YOU HAVE TROUBLE AND THEN YOU FIND YOU ARE DEALING WITH THE WORST COMPANY IN THE WORLD MTD .

I have purchased 1 used and 2 new MTD products. The old Wards 18hp riding mower lasted an additional 5yrs from time of purchase(it was ten years old then) then the transmission succumbed, 15yrs of service is something i would be happy to see again. I bought a 18hp 46in which keeps throwing drive to deck belt is 1 yr old and starting to fall apart even with frequent maintenance and retightening of bolts etc., 2yrs previously I purchased a 24hp 54in deck and I again have gone through a lot of belts, and the transmission has failed only allowing forward motion at a very slow turtles pace. I like most other people on this page will not knowingly buy another MTD mower or other productI have around 10 acres in disjointed sections to mow and the MTD mowers have left me in the lurch too many times, even with 2 mowers I can not count on them to be operational when I need them . Very Disgruntled former customer.

Bought the MTD yardmachine 139cc EASY STAR 22' mower bought it home unpacked put in oil came with it put in gas took 5 pulls (NOT 2)to start tested it seemed to mow OK Intended to use next AM after buying more gas did that BUT mower wouldn't we emptied all gas out put in box bought it back less than 12 hrs passed but (1st excuse) store does not allow return "because gas had been in it" DA how do you know if it works?

We were told to bring it to the MTD's AUTHORIZED repair center which we drove 5 miles to it was closed 6pm for weekend called them MOnday AM they said the company would pay for repairs I DON't WANT A MOWER I (SENIOR WIDOW CAN NOT START BY MYSELF) besides how can I trust a company that doesn't honor so called 2 yr warranty beyond 12- hrs??? If we have it repaired? how often will they pay till fixed? How do we sell it for what we paid? not to mention the hours wasted trying to reach the company and writng complaint to Menards hdqtr by snail mail they have a complaint form online and they blew me off that the company was responsible blah blah....

Don't Buy MTD Mowers -- Why? Because its management evidently decided to go cheap on a critical item: The sheer key that fits into the big-wheel, Yardmnan 21" model's mower's blade adapter.

Background: The blade adapter holds the mower blade to the engine's shaft so that the engine can turn the blade. The blade adapter should have inside of it what's called a "sheer key." Thus, when the user hits a big rock, root or hidden tree stump the key (sort of a rectangular, soft-metal nail) sheers off inside the adapter and thus prevents the suddenly stopped mower blade from warping or bending the engine shaft. The user then simply unscrews the blade adapter, shakes out the broken sheer key and replaces it (about a buck at a mower supply store).

But for my $200 Wal-Mart 21" MTD Yardman push mower, MTD decided to go cheap. It literally welded the sheer key into the blade adapter. So when I hit a hidden tree stump beneath the grass and it suddenly stopped the blade, the sheer key failed to sheer off and absorb the force. It thus bent the engine shaft. MTDs authorized dealer refused to fix it under warranty, even though he agreed that it wouldnt have happened had MTD not gone cheap (saved itself maybe .80 cents) and skipped using a real sheer key. The dealer agreed with me that it was MTDs fault but MTD would not authorize him to fix my mower under warranty. Pretty cheap and sleazy, eh?

When I wrote the company and supplied color photos proving my claim, I got a sleazy lawyers double-talk letter non-response. It read like a Saturday Night Live parody of lawyers. Thus, I got no justice, but only stupid, sleazy management that literally paid a sleaze-ball lawyer probably the same $200 it could have paid me on my claim (the mower only had 5 hours of use on it but was a total loss because the labor cost of fixing the bent engine shaft exceeds $200).

Wanna bet MTD did this to untold other users? Its nothing but a cheap-ass decision by MTD management (to save a lousy .80 cents), and it has now putatively resulted in economic and ecological time bombs all over the American landscape: Its only a matter of time before another user hits a stump, rock, etc. and discovers that his mowers instantly been turned into a pile of scrap so MTD could pocket .80 cents. Just a plain-ass cheap, sleazy decision by MTD management. Special note to MTD management: I have digital photos and copies of my letters to you and your sleazoid lawyer. I challenge you to dispute any of this. Specs: Yardman lawnmower model # 11A-588C755, Serial # 1C306KB0829.

I invite a RICO-wielding class action lawyer to contact me, as I will be more than happy to be the lead plaintiff in a class action, breach of express and implied warranty case against MTD.

I bought an MTD mower, which required assembly. Both rear holes for the wheel bolts were not aligned, preventing assembly. I wrote to MTD about it, and it said for me to take it to a service center.

I'm very upset. Shouldn't MTD arrange to pick up, repair or replace, and return the mower? I'm 61 years old. How can I lug a mower to a service center? I don't have a truck.

I purchased a 14.5 HP, 38 inch Lowes brand, Made by MTD, riding mower in 1995. I cut 1/2 acre weekly. Used it to haul off 7 large oak trees cut up from Hurricane Ivan, pulled all the limbs and stumps 100 yrds to the pick up pile, still looks like the day I bought it and the first set of blades lasted 12 yrs. Bought another MTD in 2005 and gave this one to my daugher who is also cutting 1/2 acre of bahia grass weekly and still going strong. Still have orginal belts, plug and tires. I cannot say how impressed my neighbors were during the clean up from the Hurricane Ivan to see this little beast chugging along pulling all it did when theirs would not for fear of losing a transmission or other damage. They are still talking about it. Even my neighbors used it for their cleanup and were amazed. Changing oil every year, blowing it off with air after each use keeps it looking new. It has always been garage kept which I think contributes to its longevity. No problems with my new one either. To me for the value you cannot beat an MTD made product.

My mower stop running so I took it to the repair shop and fortunately my repairman told me that the wrong fluid was put in the transmission and it's busted. Fortunately he was aware of the problem and told me that MTD would replace the transmission. Since then I have had trouble with the drive belt breaking.

Last Aug '08 replaced it and first time I used it this year 4/09 the belt broke again. The belt will not disengage the blades, they keep running. I contacted MTD and they told me that the belt is the correct one 954-04122 for the 605 model. This is the second belt and the blades continue to spin when disengaged. I looking for the darn thing to break again. $30+ a shot on the belt plus labor.

I ordered a new grass catcher bag for my MTD mower that is only 5 years old. I ordered the exact part number specified in my owner's manual. It arrived and looked identical to the original. I was quite pleased. I installed it and mowed our small lawn once. Turns out that the replacement bag is approx. 4 taller in the back which causes it to drag on the ground enough that it already wore a small hole in the back. I called M&D Mower and verified I ordered the correct part, but said it was possible that the wrong part was sent. However, they were unwilling to replace it because I had already used it. The replacement looked identical to the original in all respects so I didn't think it was necessary to actually measure the dimensions. I am very disappointed and will not use this company again.

The part, with shipping, was $73.90.

unable to find help & or service, help on line etc. i could progran better than whats out there. it shoud not be this hard to find the parts you need to repair ones mower.

In the spring of 2007, we bought an MTD Yard Machine, 38 inch, 13.5 hp riding mower. All was good with it for the first year, and a few weeks of this mowing season. This summer however, while mowing, the blades slowly got to where they were not turning. I figured the belt needed changing, so I changed it. The new belt had no effect on it. The problem with it is when the blade gear lever is placed in gear, the idler pully is pulled OFF of the belt! With the blade gear out of gear, the blades will turn slightly, but not fast enough to mow. I have made sure the idler pully is in good shape, but you can see that putting the lever in gear actually gives you the opposite reaction. After taking the deck off for the 5th time today, I finally decided it was beyond help. I cannot afford to take it to anyone to look at it. I cannot afford to buy a new one, either. So, now what?

I purchase a yardman mower to cut my lawn. It was a nicer version with auto drive transmission and a 22 h.p. engine. After 3.5 mowing seasons the transaxle locked up while using this mower which then took out the engine. Not very good service for a $1600 dollar mower that was used easily and well taken care of. I would have expected at least 5-10 yrs of service with regular maintenance. My yard is about 1 acre.

I now have to replace the mower whic is expensive.

I Bought my 42 inch 171/2 horse riding lawn mower in late 2003. Before the snow fell i had to replace the spindal because it had bent. They said I must have hit something, but the blade was intact. no big dings. NOT covered under warrenty. $120.00 the following spring it quit running. I needed a new fuel pump. also not under warrenty. $ 85.00 I have no idea why other than I was taking it to an independant. The certified dealer in Mt. Pleasant told me he did not work on anything bought at home depot or K mart. later that fall the starter cable burned in half. Not near the engine where it crosses, but where it hooks to the starter. $65.00 The following year I had to have all the wires to the switrch re-run as they had burnt internally. $150.00

Are we seeing a pattern? Over the last three years I have replaced the starter, The coil,The cam retaining bolt, and now it cuts out and quits every time it is under a load. We are talking about, another $400.00 Dollars her. so lets do the math. In the five years I have owned my MTD, I have put $755.00 Dollars into a mower I bought on sale at the end of the season for $850.00, plus belts, blades that are special and cost twice as much.

I could have bought a new mower for what I have paid in repairs and today it is going back to the shop.

I purchased a MTD 12.5hp 38" cut riding mower,in 1999,The mower came with no fuel shut off valve so the crankcase filled with fuel, liquid locked and sheared the connecting rod thus making the engine junk,it know has a shut off valve and a 13.5hp engine and still doesn't run right, the way the fuel line enters the carb needs to be a 90 degree elbow not staight, the fuel line is to close to the muffler.I have never had a problem with the belts and still have the original on it.My EX wife did blow the differential up plowing snow with it.I also having a problem with all the mandated safety crap on this mower, and have bypassed the seat switch and reverse with the deck down switches.

I purchased 4 acres of property last year and a very dear friend bought me a Troy Bilt Pony Lawn Mower, which has a MTD Muffler. I've 2 weeks now been moved into my doublewide. Unfortunately the muffler burnt into on my mower, and it's been in the shop "Daves" for 3 weeks now. Needless to say I'm having a great time trying to get my grass "4 acres" cut. The mower was bought at Lowe's in Beckley, is under warranty for the muffler, but they arn't shipping to the warranty repair shop "Daves". Daves mower repair shop also tells me they had another identical mower with the same problem in the shop before they came to pick up my mower, neither of which have been repaired yet. I agree with others, there should be a recall if this product is so very dangerous and faulty.

We purchased a Bolens riding lawn mower from Lowes two years ago. We also purchased the three year extended warranty. We didn't even own it one month and it kept jumping out of gear. My husband called the warranty dept. and was told we needed to take it to a place fourty miles away. We took it there and they said it was fixed. We picked it up and after vacation went to mow the lawn and the same thing happened again. We called again and were told to take it back over there. This time it was suposedly fixed again. This continued to happen every time my husband went to mow the lawn.

He ended up fixing it himself and managed to get through the mowing season, but has been continuously having to buy belts for it. This mowing season he has had to replace a cable twice within a week and now it won't go forward. He has worked trying to get it to go and is very disgusted. I know if we call they will tell us to take it back over there and then they will say well someone else touched it so it will cost more. My husband is a diabetic and this has put a great deal of stress on him. We will never buy another mower from Lowes or an MTD product again

i bought this mower in mid 1990's new. within one year, the transmission housing cracked. Mtd would not do anything as to any waranty etc. They said it was abused from using? Cost me 700 dollars to replace the housing. Afew years later my dealer told me that mtd has been having transmission housing problems. I said 3yrs to late. They also have a problem with front axles and bushings. Have had front axle replaced, two sets of bushings monthly. The bushings are made of plastic, why metal bushings, won't wear out as quick? There are no grease zerts for steering gear or anytrhing else besides front wheel hubs? Must be too had to put in? Will never buy another mtd product. I told everyone I know about this company.

I worked at Home Depot and worked in the garden department selling lawnmowers. I sold a MTD to my Doctor and it was built with the wrong blade deck. MTD gave him the proper deck after a numerous set of belts.

I sold my cousin a MTD 21/46 lawntractor and it has the same problem. She and her elderly Mother have had it for 3 years and it has been down more than it has been ready to mow. They have replaced 6 deck belts and She had 1 put on 2 weeks ago and it took it out today.

I see the problem and MTD has to know about this. The engine pully is to high for the deck. I think MTD should repair the problem and reimburse her for the money she has put out on belts.

No damage just the Money that she has paid out for belts and the headaches from this piece of junk mower. Never will I purchase and MTD product as I have seen to many problems.

I bought my MTD pieace of junk a couple of years ago and it has been nothing but trouble since the beginning. I have had to replace the belt six times. The belts keep getting chewed up and I have purchaced good belts. I have purchased 2 belts in the last 2 months. I bought one in April and one in May. I have only gotton my enitre yard mowed only 2 times. It is very frustrating to not be able to mow the lawn after buying and expensive riding mower!!!

I have my elderly Mother to take care of and I have a bad back. I need a mower I can depend on so we can have a nice looking lawn like everyone else. It is depressing to look out and see tall grass everywhere. Another thing, the list of parts on the MTD site does not have the proper part numbers. I ordered a belt to drive the blades and they sent me the one that drives the transmission. They need to get the parts list right!

The expense of buying new belts all the time. The last belt was purchased only two weeks ago and has already come off and is being chewed up.

i bought a yard man 42 inch mower. before i finished cuttingg half my yard it quit. my yard is less than a quater acre. i took the mower back and they kept it 6 weeks. i told the store manager they would have to deliver it because of my work schedule. i happened to be home when the mower was delivered so when the driver rolled it out of the truck i asked him if it was running he said sure, jumped in his truck and took off. i tried to crank it and it would spin and not crank.

i called the store and told them about it and was told to bring it back, the driver was only able to deliver not pick up. i took it back and they kept it another 5 weeks. during this time i cut my grass with a 1973 craftsman with the kohler engine. i bought the new mower in may and cut my grass 1 time through the summer. i tried 4 different times by then i was stuck with a mower lowes would not take back. i finally took it to another repair shop and was told that mowers now are not designed to last more than 3 years and push mowers aren't supposed to last more than 2 years. this is a mower that i paid $1600 for.

the only way i got satisfaction was to sit in front of lowes and tell everyone looking at mowers about mine. the store called the local police to tell me to leave. after doing this at 4 stores i finally got a call from the home office offering me a refund. its a shame that when these stores get your money thats all they care about. i found a 30 year old mower shop in a nearby small town, spent $650 having my old craftsman rebuilt and thats what i cut with now. i lost work time, put up with months of torment dealing with lowes. i will never buy another mower made by mtd, i will use a reel mower first

My dad purchased a 17 1/2 hp gear drive riding mower from the wallmart in bennington, vermont, around 1995. The first thing was operator error, my dad hit some roots in his back yard, ruined right side spindle, replaced, and new set of blades to. But, the real problem started while later, mower just shut off for no reason. Blown fuse under the shifting panel. The wiring on this machine has absolutely no wire loom to protect against abrasions from wire moving around. At Napa Auto parts I purchased enough loom to cover all the wiring on the machine, about twenty dollars worth.

I guess I think on this situation, you get what you pay for. My dad spent $999.99 on this machine, as for me, his son, I've learned my lesson, or his lesson, I buy commercial equipment, Wright Corp., John Deere Corp. certainly even name brands are cutting back on quality, but at least with a name brand the customer still has some bargining power, fix this or I'll go to MTD.... As far as MTD is as a corp. worthless..

Replacement of spindle and wiring fix took at least 1 1/2 months, I know, because I mowed my dads lawn with a push mower...

I pruchased a Huskey 26 HP 50 cut 5-04. The mower runs and cuts fine. Its the paint that is the problem The mower has been garage kept. I've cleaned it regularly. The second season the paint started to bubble and continue to come off. And needless to say rust. Now the foot pad area is completly rusted thru. I can see the mower deck in places.

I bought the mower because of the heavy metal they used compared to the copetition. I would like for Mtd to replace the fender/body cover Part # 783-04333A They say there wasn't a warranty. I still would like the replacement part. Has anyone else had this problem.

I purchased a yard machine 12.5 hpLT riding lawn mower made by MTD in the late 1990's. The owners manual has been lost. I went to the internet to down load a new one. The MTD website does not show the model or sn of my machine.

It Looks like a Lawn Mover. It sounds like a Lawn mover but my MURRAY SELECT 22 with a 6.25 QUAMTUM motor that claims 2n1 MULCH/BAG certainly doesn't perform like one. The motor seems good but it doesn't have the ability to mulch or bag. I think the body design must be bad because when you choose to mulch. All the grass just cakes on the inside of the body and when you use the bag. It doesn't have the ability to force the grass to the back of the bag. So it clogs up after about a 15 foot pass on grass about 3 inches tall and the mower on the highest setting. My neighbor bought a toro with the same motor and in all conditions it seems to do the job just fine.

My Murray lawn mower leaks gas out of the tank. It's a nightmare.

This mower could blow up!

I bought a murray lawnmower in sept 2004. I didnt have any problems with it the first year but since last summer its been a source of constant headaches. It frequently wont start despite my regualar maintainance. I've changed the spark plugs, oil and kept the engine as clean as possible

When I first purchased my Murray model 229610X8A from Home Depot, I had to take it back twice to replace the transmission. It is now melted, again since it was made of a mica material and now it is impossible to find a replacement part. It is a good operating mower when it works but it is hard to push with the front wheels off the ground!

Over the last year, my father has purchased FOUR Bolens MTD 414 Lawn mowers from Lowes. Each lawn mower has suffered the exact same fate---it works good for the first two times, then it barely works at all after that. The current lawn mower doesn't stay on for more than 15 seconds before cutting off--even if it's just sitting still. It's hard to start, and even when it does start, it doesn't stay on---and this particular mower is practically new. We only got one and a 1/2 uses out of it before it started to fail.... ...all the previous Bolens/MTD 414 mowers did the EXACT same thing.

So why buy the same model mower FOUR times if it is unreliable? Because, at $159, it appeared to be a bargain and we thought that we perhaps just purchased a lemon the first couple of times. We kept giving the mower and Bolens/MTD the benefit of a doubt... However, now I'm totally convinced that this model mower is just garbage. We've had dirt cheap, $99 mowers that have lasted for years. None of our FOUR Bolens/MTD mowers have even lasted for one whole summer. This is BY FAR the worst, most unreliable mower we've ever used. Pathetic!!

I purchased a new 21" Troy-Bilt push mower in the spring of 2005. After using it for 3/4 of a year I was totally disgusted with several aspects of the mower. I wrote to MTD's customer services department, not as a complaint, but rather as a consumer report to help them improve their product by listing all the things I felt were wrong with the mower, especally the fact that the mower blew leaves out of the way instead of sucking them under the cutting deck to be mulched.

The response I received was horrible. The customer services group basically blew me off. And, had the nerve to say that the mower was for cutting grass not leaves. Well, they don't know it, but anyone in the U.S. who has a mower and leaves on their property will go over the leaves with the mower. I'm sure the information in my letter never made it to the corporate office.

I bought a "New 23HP Z-Force 50" mower from TSC in Springboro,OH. They could not find the operators & service and parts list manuals. They said that they would order them for me. Well, what I received was botched copies of the manuals; the pages are upside-dowm,backwards,and out of order. Very poor quality manuals for the type of product they cover and represent, "Cub Cadet"

I bought a new mower 3 1/2 years ago and it's junk. MTD pffered a mew ,pwer fpr 30% less than the new price. that's nice but MTD should replace it completely free.
