Curt of Brownsburg Indian IN (07/24/08) I purchase a yardman mower to cut my lawn. It was a nicer version with auto drive transmission and a 22 h.p. engine. After 3.5 mowing seasons the transaxle locked up while using this mower which then took out the engine. Not very good service for a $1600 dollar mower that was used easily and well taken care of. I would have expected at least 5-10 yrs of service with regular maintenance. My yard is about 1 acre.
I now have to replace the mower whic is expensive.
Marcia of Peggs OK (06/20/08) We purchased a Bolens riding lawn mower from Lowes two years ago. We also purchased the three year extended warranty. We didn't even own it one month and it kept jumping out of gear. My husband called the warranty dept. and was told we needed to take it to a place fourty miles away. We took it there and they said it was fixed. We picked it up and after vacation went to mow the lawn and the same thing happened again. We called again and were told to take it back over there. This time it was suposedly fixed again. This continued to happen every time my husband went to mow the lawn.
He ended up fixing it himself and managed to get through the mowing season, but has been continuously having to buy belts for it. This mowing season he has had to replace a cable twice within a week and now it won't go forward. He has worked trying to get it to go and is very disgusted. I know if we call they will tell us to take it back over there and then they will say well someone else touched it so it will cost more. My husband is a diabetic and this has put a great deal of stress on him. We will never buy another mower from Lowes or an MTD product again
Randy of Valley Center KS (06/09/08) I worked at Home Depot and worked in the garden department selling lawnmowers. I sold a MTD to my Doctor and it was built with the wrong blade deck. MTD gave him the proper deck after a numerous set of belts.
I sold my cousin a MTD 21/46 lawntractor and it has the same problem. She and her elderly Mother have had it for 3 years and it has been down more than it has been ready to mow. They have replaced 6 deck belts and She had 1 put on 2 weeks ago and it took it out today.
I see the problem and MTD has to know about this. The engine pully is to high for the deck. I think MTD should repair the problem and reimburse her for the money she has put out on belts.
No damage just the Money that she has paid out for belts and the headaches from this piece of junk mower. Never will I purchase and MTD product as I have seen to many problems.
Jean of Whitewater KS (06/08/08) I bought my MTD pieace of junk a couple of years ago and it has been nothing but trouble since the beginning. I have had to replace the belt six times. The belts keep getting chewed up and I have purchaced good belts. I have purchased 2 belts in the last 2 months. I bought one in April and one in May. I have only gotton my enitre yard mowed only 2 times. It is very frustrating to not be able to mow the lawn after buying and expensive riding mower!!!
I have my elderly Mother to take care of and I have a bad back. I need a mower I can depend on so we can have a nice looking lawn like everyone else. It is depressing to look out and see tall grass everywhere. Another thing, the list of parts on the MTD site does not have the proper part numbers. I ordered a belt to drive the blades and they sent me the one that drives the transmission. They need to get the parts list right!
The expense of buying new belts all the time. The last belt was purchased only two weeks ago and has already come off and is being chewed up.
Gregory of Salem NY (05/21/08) My dad purchased a 17 1/2 hp gear drive riding mower from the wallmart in bennington, vermont, around 1995. The first thing was operator error, my dad hit some roots in his back yard, ruined right side spindle, replaced, and new set of blades to. But, the real problem started while later, mower just shut off for no reason. Blown fuse under the shifting panel. The wiring on this machine has absolutely no wire loom to protect against abrasions from wire moving around. At Napa Auto parts I purchased enough loom to cover all the wiring on the machine, about twenty dollars worth.
I guess I think on this situation, you get what you pay for. My dad spent $999.99 on this machine, as for me, his son, I've learned my lesson, or his lesson, I buy commercial equipment, Wright Corp., John Deere Corp. certainly even name brands are cutting back on quality, but at least with a name brand the customer still has some bargining power, fix this or I'll go to MTD.... As far as MTD is as a corp. worthless..
Replacement of spindle and wiring fix took at least 1 1/2 months, I know, because I mowed my dads lawn with a push mower...
Jerri of Fort Worth TX (04/27/08) I pruchased a Huskey 26 HP 50 cut 5-04. The mower runs and cuts fine. Its the paint that is the problem The mower has been garage kept. I've cleaned it regularly. The second season the paint started to bubble and continue to come off. And needless to say rust. Now the foot pad area is completly rusted thru. I can see the mower deck in places.
I bought the mower because of the heavy metal they used compared to the copetition. I would like for Mtd to replace the fender/body cover Part # 783-04333A They say there wasn't a warranty. I still would like the replacement part. Has anyone else had this problem.
Wallace of Newton AL (03/17/07) I purchased a yard machine 12.5 hpLT riding lawn mower made by MTD in the late 1990's. The owners manual has been lost. I went to the internet to down load a new one. The MTD website does not show the model or sn of my machine.
Glenn of Port Saint Lucie FL (09/05/06) It Looks like a Lawn Mover. It sounds like a Lawn mover but my MURRAY SELECT 22 with a 6.25 QUAMTUM motor that claims 2n1 MULCH/BAG certainly doesn't perform like one. The motor seems good but it doesn't have the ability to mulch or bag. I think the body design must be bad because when you choose to mulch. All the grass just cakes on the inside of the body and when you use the bag. It doesn't have the ability to force the grass to the back of the bag. So it clogs up after about a 15 foot pass on grass about 3 inches tall and the mower on the highest setting. My neighbor bought a toro with the same motor and in all conditions it seems to do the job just fine.
Deem of Highland Park NJ (09/04/06) My Murray lawn mower leaks gas out of the tank. It's a nightmare.
This mower could blow up!
Timothy of Charlotte NC (08/10/06) I bought a murray lawnmower in sept 2004. I didnt have any problems with it the first year but since last summer its been a source of constant headaches. It frequently wont start despite my regualar maintainance. I've changed the spark plugs, oil and kept the engine as clean as possible
Terry of Johnstown PA (07/28/06) When I first purchased my Murray model 229610X8A from Home Depot, I had to take it back twice to replace the transmission. It is now melted, again since it was made of a mica material and now it is impossible to find a replacement part. It is a good operating mower when it works but it is hard to push with the front wheels off the ground!
Gemari of Florence SC (06/11/06) Over the last year, my father has purchased FOUR Bolens MTD 414 Lawn mowers from Lowes. Each lawn mower has suffered the exact same fate---it works good for the first two times, then it barely works at all after that. The current lawn mower doesn't stay on for more than 15 seconds before cutting off--even if it's just sitting still. It's hard to start, and even when it does start, it doesn't stay on---and this particular mower is practically new. We only got one and a 1/2 uses out of it before it started to fail.... ...all the previous Bolens/MTD 414 mowers did the EXACT same thing.
So why buy the same model mower FOUR times if it is unreliable? Because, at $159, it appeared to be a bargain and we thought that we perhaps just purchased a lemon the first couple of times. We kept giving the mower and Bolens/MTD the benefit of a doubt... However, now I'm totally convinced that this model mower is just garbage. We've had dirt cheap, $99 mowers that have lasted for years. None of our FOUR Bolens/MTD mowers have even lasted for one whole summer. This is BY FAR the worst, most unreliable mower we've ever used. Pathetic!!
Russ of Kirkwood MO (02/16/06) I purchased a new 21" Troy-Bilt push mower in the spring of 2005. After using it for 3/4 of a year I was totally disgusted with several aspects of the mower. I wrote to MTD's customer services department, not as a complaint, but rather as a consumer report to help them improve their product by listing all the things I felt were wrong with the mower, especally the fact that the mower blew leaves out of the way instead of sucking them under the cutting deck to be mulched.
The response I received was horrible. The customer services group basically blew me off. And, had the nerve to say that the mower was for cutting grass not leaves. Well, they don't know it, but anyone in the U.S. who has a mower and leaves on their property will go over the leaves with the mower. I'm sure the information in my letter never made it to the corporate office.
Robert of Harveysburg OH (01/05/06) I bought a "New 23HP Z-Force 50" mower from TSC in Springboro,OH. They could not find the operators & service and parts list manuals. They said that they would order them for me. Well, what I received was botched copies of the manuals; the pages are upside-dowm,backwards,and out of order. Very poor quality manuals for the type of product they cover and represent, "Cub Cadet"
John of Three Rivers MI (09/14/05) I bought a new mower 3 1/2 years ago and it's junk. MTD pffered a mew ,pwer fpr 30% less than the new price. that's nice but MTD should replace it completely free.
Dave of Moore OK (08/28/05) I love my Murray 22" 6.5 HP lawn mower. It has so many things going for it. However, all these good things were discovered while attempting to deal with the mower's one little flaw. Nothing gets out the side discharge chute. Even after wiring up the safety flap (ironically enough with wire using my safety-wire pliers) it jams solid with mulch within a few feet.
# 1: The mower is tough. It has to be to survive the pounding required, bouncing the running mower from front wheels to back wheels, until it grudgingly discharges another bolus of grass.
# 2: It's user friendly. It obligingly vapor locks on a regular basis, allowing me to go into the house for a cool drink.
# 3: The grass fears it! I know this from the way it bows down in front of the mower. And even more so from the way it's still bowed down after the mower has passed.
# 4: No grass escapes. I have it set as high as it will ride and can pass over my dog's tennis ball without disturbing it. While the tennis ball can pass out from under the mower, somehow mulch can't escape. It has to be piled against the side discharge chute.
# 5. Ease of maintenance. With only one exception the mower is relatively simple to maintain. The exception is that first thing I must do before running the mower is to dethatch it. Thick layers of dried grass cling to every surface of the underside resulting in almost no clearance for cut grass. Getting that out of the way means I can focus on that pesky side discharge chute.
# 6: This mower builds character. The neighbors love the show and it's a heck of an ad for buying an A-O-M. (Any Other Mower). And BTW, I know the blade is sharp I and turning the correct direction. With the saftey flap wired up I can see it where it almost protrudes from the side discharge opening. Mowers like this should keep your attorneys on the gravy train. Happy litigating.
Mike of Toledo OH (7/26/03):
I purchased a TroyBuilt self-propelled lawn mower with a 7-year warranty in July 1997. During the first full season in 1998 I began having problems with the front-end self-propelling no long working. This problem has turned into clockwork. After each season of mowing (a small 5500 sq ft lot) the front end drive system starts to not work. The mower is in the repair shop again for the fifth time.
Last year in April 2002, after TroyBuilt sold, I was able to get MTD to honor my 7-year warrant (not without some intense conversation). My front end was serviced again this past October of 2002. Now this spring after approximately 5-6 times using it the front end starts to go out again. I took it into the service shop for the fifth time for the same problem and am now being told that there is rust causing the problem on the front axle. This lawnmower has had no different use this past spring or storage during the winter, and now there is a rust problem. I find that hard to believe.
If there was a lemon law for lawnmowers I believe this would qualify.
