Maytag Legacy Washers & Dryers

Consumer Complaints & Reviews

Good News for Neptune Owners -- Maytag has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit covering two million homeowners who had trouble with their Maytag Neptune washers. But as the complaints below indicate, lots of problems remain.

I purchased a Maytag Centennial Commercial Technology washer in September 2010 which is less than two years ago. It decides to stop spinning correctly in the Spin cycles. Clothes come out sopping wet so I contacted Maytag to have a tech come out. On the day that the tech came out from A&E Factory Service, he stated it was a switch. He changed the switch and still, it did not spin correctly. He then proceeds to state that it is another part, which again, it did not do the function correctly. He then proceeded to state that it is the clutch, then the transmission. The cost was raising to $519.00.

I stated that I did not want to proceed because I would be purchasing a new washer with that quote. I stated to place all the original parts back onto the washer. He did so, but did not place them on correctly. The casing of the washer no longer is secured to the drum - bolts and plastic pieces are still on the side. He left my house with finger prints of grease on the walls. If this is the workmanship that Maytag recommends, then my business deserves to go elsewhere.

A complaint was filed with the A&E Factory Service. However, no one has contacted me about the complaint as was requested. All I want is for my washer to be fixed or to have a tech who is knowledgeable to come out and fix it. I contacted Maytag to inform then of the situation and they stated that all their techs are certified. I do not believe that my washer of less than two years old could possibly have so many parts that are faulty. I hope that this may, in turn, help another consumer to avoid purchasing washers through Maytag and their parent company, Whirlpool.

Not only did I buy a Maytag washer for the brand name and trusted longevity, but because they were always a good product in the past. When my Maytag EZ-Epic washer drum failed after only owning it for two years, there was no effort made by any associate to cover this under any sort of warranty at all. To replace this part, I was quoted so much money that I could go out and buy a brand new one for the cost of the repair for this faulty part. I am extremely dissatisfied with the way I was treated because the so called product was out of warranty and I will never buy a Maytag product again. Shame on Maytag for ever selling off to such a fraudster of a company.

Maytag Centennial 'eco conserve' clothes washer - I purchased a Maytag (non-agitating) washer, (model MVWC400XW) just about a year ago and I can't tell you how dissatisfied I am with this product. It does not clean the simplest of soil from garments. I have actually had clothes come out of the washer after a complete wash cycle, with dry clothes. They recommend putting soap in first, at the bottom of the washer and then load clothes; I have had clothes come out stained as a result the clothes sitting on top of the soap. I am requesting that I be able to return (have this washer picked up) from my home and replaced with a washer with an agitator or a compatible washer that actually washes clothes. I believe that this may qualify as a lemon with regards to California lemon laws.

I am writing for your assistance with an ongoing problem that I am having with my Maytag Series 2000 front-loading clothes washing machine. I am, frankly, astonished and frustrated beyond any means of coping with the response I have gotten from Maytag about the lemon washing machine that was sold to me. As I have never before had any sort of reason to complain about any major appliance purchase (nor about any car or house purchase), I'm not yet sure of what avenues are available to me. It seems prudent to inquire of your office before getting a private attorney to help me with this. The following is my situation:

First of all, I am asking for a replacement washing machine. I am clearly saddled with a lemon.

On or around December 2010, we purchased the Maytag Series 2000 washing machine from Cedar Appliance of Medford, MA. Within the first several months, the washer started ripping, shredding, and putting holes in our clothes. This did not happen during every wash cycle, just sometimes. At the time, we didn't know if it was the washer or the (also new) Maytag dryer that was causing it. After living with this for some time, we decided to call Cedar Appliance for service. Cedar came out several times to look at the machines and they couldn't tell what machine was causing the holes. Eventually, I started examining every article coming out of the washer to determine which machine was causing the problem. Over time and many visits later, Cedar Appliance referred us to L.A.R. Service of Wakefield MA, which they called Maytag service.

L.A.R. Service came out and looked at it. They said that we were missing a part. They ordered the part and installed it and said everything should be fine. They also sold us an extended service contract. I am still having the exact same problem with the machine. Today I called L.A.R. and they told me that I had to call Cedar to get an authorization for service. I called Cedar and they told me to call Maytag. I called Maytag and after spending an inordinate amount of time recalling the details, the service representative told me that I could pay up front for an extended warranty and they would send someone out. I asked for a supervisor. I got Kitty. Kitty told me that Maytag would not replace my machine, which is clearly a lemon because I hadn't yet had enough service done on it. I explained that I have spent hours calling for service, scheduling service, waiting for service, supervising service, and paying for service. She explained that on only one service call did they install new parts, so I needed more service. So, I should have demanded new parts on each of these service calls so that I would have earned some credibility for my lemon machine?

The fact is that my family and I have lost hundreds of dollars on torn and ruined clothing caused by a new washing machine! After the boot was installed, or replaced (I'm not sure exactly what was done), we are experiencing the exact same problem. When the L.A.R. Service people left last time, they told me the problem was solved. It wasn't. This is not normal. This is a lemon machine.

It's one thing to have clothes destroyed, but what is extra frustrating is that I never know when the machine is going to destroy an article of clothing. This past Friday, we were preparing to go out of town for our daughter's basketball tournament. I took the clothes out of the washer on Friday evening to discover that one of the blue uniforms was destroyed. There was no time to replace the uniform and my daughter was out of luck. This means that I cannot put an article of clothing into the washer that I absolutely have to have.

I can't live this way. This is a relatively new washer that should last 20 years. Right now, I can't wash any important article of clothing. I've been told before that it was all set. Kitty has L.A.R. coming again this Wednesday to repair the machine. What am I supposed to do when it's repaired? Put a uniform jersey in it? This is a very brief description of the experience I have had over the past 1.5 years with this new machine. The hours, money, disappointment, and utter frustration is more than I can describe in an email. I have attached three photos of recently destroyed items. Unfortunately, I threw away tens of items several months ago when L.A.R. fixed it.

Is this unbelievable? Or are my expectations too high? Is this really what Maytag/Whirlpool has in mind for customer service? Is this really what they mean by standing behind their products? Why wouldn't or why shouldn't Maytag replace this machine? How much more time, money, and tears is a customer expected to spend and endure? How do I regain peace of mind and quality of running a household? Am I supposed to toss this machine and buy a new one? Believe me, that's what I will have to do if I can't get relief on this problem. There is no way that I can go many more months with this headache. In many ways, buying a brand new machine would be worth the peace of mind, but I am trying to make sure that my family, as consumers, are treated properly. It is also the principle of the thing.

Please advise on any remedies available to me here in Massachusetts and please let me know what additional details should be provided and to whom.

As an aside, Maytag/Whirlpool does not seem to be doing well with their reputation on the internet regarding customer service.

I purchased this new Maytag washer (Model # MVWC300XW, Serial # 12621033) from Hahn Appliance Warehouse in Oklahoma City, OK 73107 on November 23, 2011. It is less than six months old, and the transmission has gone out. Hahn advised me that they had to go through Maytag Service, and they would only replace the part. I contacted Maytag/Whirlpool Service Corp. directly and spoke with a manager named David, who informed me he was sorry but would not authorize a refund or exchange for a better product because this was the first service call. I am very dissatisfied with this product and with the service standards that Whirlpool/Maytag offers on their products. If I were to sell a product that I knew has had numerous complaints, I would pull that product from my line offering and make either a full refund or replace with a higher level service product.

Maytag Centennial 3.4 top-loader was purchased at Home Depot. It has never worked yet. On 4/28/12, the third weekend, I sat home for the servicemen to fix this junk machine. The first two times, the machine didn't work ten minutes after they left and today they went to the wrong address. I have much more important things to do than to sit around and wait for someone to figure out what is wrong with this machine. It would have been cheaper for me to junk this brand new machine and buy a washer from a company that makes washers that work!

I do not like this Maytag Centennial Washer at all, I have had it for a year and a half and it just does not perform good at all. Most of the time the clothes still come out with dirt on them but what I am most mad about is the fact that it keeps leaving bleach spots on my clothes, several washes after I use the bleach. I will definitely not recommend this washer to anyone.

The control (computer) stopped working. The Maytag Centennial washer would not turn off. I had to unplug it from the electrical outlet to get it to stop. The repairman had to replace the computer panel. He said it had burned up. I bought this machine from Lowe's on January 11, 2011. It lasted 15 months and cost me $265 to get it repaired. I called Lowe's and because I did not buy the extended warranty, they would not even talk to me. When I pay about $500 for a washing machine, I expect it to last longer than 15 months! I will never buy another Maytag appliance! Customers beware: these products are a bunch of junk. Even the repairman told me so.

I purchased a Maytag Centennial Top Load Washer in February 2012. I wish I had understood the workings of the washer before making the purchase. I am not at all happy that the lid locks as soon as the washer starts and unless I push a button to get the lid open. I cannot open the lid to maybe add more items or check to see if the water amount is sufficient or too much. I have no idea how much goes in for each water level. Of course, I cannot take water out but I could put more in if I see it is not enough. And after learning the water levels, I would know just how to determine the level I need. Some man must have designed the panel. Otherwise I am satisfied. I really like the large load capacity. I originally thought I wanted a front load to get a large capacity but this suits me fine.

I purchased a Maytag Centennial washer and dryer on February 4th. It was delivered on the 11th. I am dissatisfied with the performance of the washer. I use the same amount of detergent and fabric softener as I did for my 15-year old Maytag washer, but the wash is not as soft as with the old machine. Also, the wash when finished appears to be a lot wetter. What is wrong? What else can I do?

February 2011, I purchased a washer from Lowe's and started having problems with the washer leaking and skipping cycles on the first week. Lowe's exchanged the washer end of first week. The new washer started with not adding water in wash cycles. The repairmen sent by Maytag could not find any problem with the washer. The washer worked off and on for months with problems. Cycles with bleach added worked fine, but 3 or 4 loads later with no bleach having been added, it would produce bleach-stained clothes. The repairman came out again and could find the cause for skipping cycles, but suggested I run clean cycle every time I use bleach. It defeats the purpose of purchasing an HE water-efficient washer.

The third repairman sat and watched the unit run a load and then he said "I know what is wrong". He took the washer control panel apart and found the wire harness was not properly connected from tub to control panel. I have not found what causes bleach stains 3 loads after the bleach was put in the washer. I will not recommend this unit to anyone because of manufacturing problems with harness assembly.

The Maytag Centennial (Model MVWC6ESWW1) washer was purchased in September 2009 and within 18 months no longer provided water at the temperature selected on the control panel. The problem started after we used a spin setting to remove water from a cycle that did not complete itself. Somehow selecting a spin cycle "disturbed" the water temperature control mechanism.

We were advised by Sears to unplug and then reattach the electrical connection (similar to rebooting a computer), but this was not successful in water being delivered to the washer at the temperature indicated on the control panel. While there was minor damage to clothing and a waste of hot water before we realized what was happening, the real inconvenience is not being able to rely on the water temperature setting.

Based upon reading comments on the internet (including Consumer Reports) concerning this washer, the public should be warned not to purchase this machine. Better still the machine needs to be recalled in order to protect the consumer.

I recently purchased a Maytag centennial washer and dryer from my local Home Depot. I set up a delivery date of 2/9/12. I was contacted on 2/6/12 by a Maytag staff telling me that my washer and dryer were on back-order until 2/29/12. This is unacceptable to me. Why does your company not tell its retailers that some items may be back ordered? I would have accepted this if told when I scheduled my original delivery, but being told days later and after taking the day off from work, is poor customer service to me. I am giving very serious consideration to voiding this order and finding a new company to deal with. I do not have the confidence that future issues will be shared or dealt with in a timely manner.

I have been trying to solve the issue with my washer, that my parents bought me for my new home. Home Depot, where they were bought, came out twice, and all they say is there is nothing wrong with the washer. There are plenty of things wrong with the washer. It doesn't clean the clothes. I have to use the heavy wash cycle, to try and get the clothes clean. Maytag won't even deal with the situation. The fight has been going on for over 2 years (washer serial # is CY4744432 manufacturer's number is MVWC6ESWWI).

Not sure if I should just give up. I'm really tired of fighting with Maytag and Home Depot. I hope you can help.

I purchased this washer in 2010. It has broken 4 times since purchase for the same reason. I was told by the appliance repairperson (which Maytag referred me to last time it broke on 03-11-11) that the manufacturer does not replace the machine until after it has broken down a 4th time. Now, the warranty has expired (in 09-11), and it has broken down again for the same problem - water won't fill. Sherry at call center informed me my machine does not qualify for replacement. Then, she would not give me a number or contact info for corporate office so I could forward my complaint. This machine is only slightly over a year old. I have had nothing but problems with it. I want a new machine, or at least unlimited repairs for the recurring problem. And I should not have to pay for a warranty that costs almost as much as the machine itself when I've already paid for the machine, and at least an equal amount to the cost of the washer in repair bills just to keep this lemon on the road. I want a number and a name for someone that will listen. I may be part of the shrinking middle class, but I am a customer, and I should be treated right. Please help me.

We bought our Legacy Washer and Dryer from Home Depot in December, 2005. Luckily we also bought the one year warranty, because in January 2006, our washer quit running. We called Home Depot, we got the runaround and I think Maytag sent someone out. When he tipped the washing machine over, a belt was off. He said "it happens." The next year, something else went wrong with the washing machine (not under warranty anymore) and I paid $129 for that visit. Three weeks ago, the spin dry quit doing a good job on the extended spin cycle. Tonight, I put a load of clothes in and though the washer sounded like it was agitating the clothes, when I lifted the top I saw it was just noise, no agitating. I cannot afford the service call, let alone the whole repair or a new washer.

I purchased this product at an authorized Maytag dealer sixteen months ago (Maytag front-Loading washer, model MHWE55OWW1) for approximately $1,500. The main bearing and drum are now shot. Maytag has acknowledged that it is likely defective. Notwithstanding their conclusion, Maytag has chosen not to offer a repair or replacement. The conclusion is simply that Maytag does not make a very good product, and any prospective purchasers can expect that they will not get any customer support for their products.

I purchased a Maytag Legacy Series Quiet Series 300 in early July 2010. It had a recall for a heater part that could potentially burn down my house, so we couldn't use it while we waited for that part to be replaced. They offered me a small sum of money towards the purchase of a much more expensive dishwasher which I declined since I'd only had the dishwasher a few months at the most. It is now the end of August 2011, a month past their factory warranty. The dishwasher did not get my dishes clean, made awful grinding noises and three days ago, it refused to drain and then spewed 50 or more gallons of water all over my kitchen which then leaked into the basement.

The repairman charged $85 to tell me that the computer in the control panel had burned out and was not fixable. I think I paid somewhere in the region of $500 for this machine. My last dishwasher lasted about ten years. This is completely unacceptable. In searching the internet, I found hundreds, if not thousands of identical complaints. Clearly, this machine is a lemon and Maytag should be forced to replace it or better yet, refund the money spent to purchase the machine. Plus, pay for my valuable time spent mopping up water, washing dishes by hand, searching the internet for probable cause and potential solutions, waiting for Maytag/Home Depot to respond to my inquiries and a large sum for general annoyance. Maytag had a reputation of reliability (emphasis on "had"). They've got some slick ads but they do not stand behind their products at all. I will never by another Maytag product and I urge you to do the same.

I bought a washer and dryer a few months ago from Home Depot Maytag. My clothes do not come out wrinkle-free. They are very wrinkled, to the point where I have to iron the perma press.

The dryer I just got rid of was 30 years old, and always got the wrinkles out of the clothes. So I am very disappointed in the way yours works. I don't know what you can do, but this is not good. Thank you.

I purchased a washer (Maytag Legacy Series); and at the same day, it would not wash. A repairman came out; and it was the transmission. I should have sent it back at that point. After the repairman removed the new/old transmission and replaced it, it worked fine. Then about 11 months later, it started leaking. I kept thinking it was my water hoses or the water spigots coming from the wall.

After another 5 or so washes, and a couple of more weeks, with my husband and I looking and feeling and watching, I discovered it wasn't a leak from the spigot or a back-up in my wall or my water faucets nor lint build up. It was indeed the washer. I sat it in the garage and it's still sitting there. My laundry room is on the third floor of my tri-level home; water leaked all through my ceilings. What a waste of money. No, I did not purchase an extended warranty, so I was out of luck; and it was just a few days past the one year point. We had no warranty and we were out of money, stuck with a new piece of junk. It still looks brand new.

The same story. I bought a Maytag Legacy washer 4 years ago. And I've had it service twice. The second time, the technician tells me the transmission is shot and it's not worth fixing. I'm now in the same boat as a lot of other people I feel and know I've been ripped off. I've always trusted Maytag/whirlpool products. Never again. They need to be held responsible for the defective products they are selling everyone.

Update to last correspondence 7/29/2010.

I reported a dishwasher by Maytag/Whirlpool that, as last report and after a great deal of frustration, was agreed to be replaced by Whirlpool. It is now Sept. 24, 2010 and no action has been taken, under the guise that the dishwasher is, again, on back order. This has been the response every time I call. They again advised me that the dishwasher was being shipped to Bob's Appliance in Rochester for installation. On August 23, 2010, I called Bob's the day before it was supposedly going to be installed, and again was told they do not service my zip code.

I then called Whirlpool and talked to Eric (866-640-7146 x6364) because Alyssa (866-640-7146 x7771), my original rep who never returned any of my phone calls, was out of the office. Eric, again, contacted Bob's and found out I was, again, right. He did, however, finally find someone else in Preston, MN who would, in fact, service my zip code. However, the item was on back order so the point was moot, but it was supposed to be delivered to the installation company around the 30th of August.

Having not heard anything, by Sept. 9th, I called and left a message with Eric, who never returned my call. I then called customer service at the installer and was advised it has not come in but would be called when it came in. I waited for a call back from Eric, who had called me back once before, but apparently I'm back on ignore.

I then called customer service the week of Sept. 13, figuring I had given Eric enough time to respond. This time, I ended up talking to a customer service rep, Nicole, who advised me that the dishwasher is on back order until 9/21/2010. She claimed that if it didn't ship this time, I would have to take a refund. A problem with a refund is we bought the unit at Home Depot but they no longer install in our area due to distance, curbside only. We also bought an extended warranty through Home Depot which would transfer to the new unit if replaced but not if I bought it at Lowe's, who will still deliver to my area - cost of warranty $100.00 (rounded off). I wasn't pleased with the refund option.

I called today, 9/24/2010, at customer service and spoke to John who asked me if I had spoken to the installer since 8/27 (and here I thought he was looking at my file). I told him yes and that I had just spoken to Nicole in customer service almost 2 weeks ago and was told it was on back order until 9/21, also that the installer said they would call me as soon as they receive it (and they have proved to be responsive)- no call - no dishwasher at installer. John has advised me that there is no record of receipt or shipment of my replacement dishwasher. He also added that the Exchange Dept. is handling this and he has sent and action notice to them to call me tomorrow to discuss it. I won't hold my breath for a phone call. I cannot, in good conscience, ever recommend Maytag or Whirlpool products. Not because the product might not be reliable but because, if there's issues, they have to deal with the most frustrating customer service organization I've ever dealt with.

We purchased a Maytag Neptune Washer on 8/22/05. The first service call was in December of 2005. The repair was to replace a water level switch.

Since then, we have had many more calls for repair. Generally a different part would be changed. There have been 2 recurring problems. The first being the softener dispenser would not dispense. Twice, they had to replace that part. Several incidents involved the washer not draining, with error code 'nd' , which happened at least 4 times. Finally, the washer would not spin out all the water, leaving the clothes too wet. One of the repairs included replacement of a motion sensor, and the control board. One repair was to replace a broken pump. Thankfully we did purchase the extended warranty.

Yes, we did pay over $1000 for this washer. Yes, each time it breaks down, it takes several days before a service person can come, then several more, each time a part must be ordered and installed. Each time, we incur more charges in having to use the laundrymat. We are a large family, so the laundry costs have been a drain on our budget. I do wish I was aware of the problems with this model before purchasing it. In this economy, I cannot buy another washer.

I bought the Maytag Legacy Series Commercial Grade washer and dryer set in 2005. Starting in 2007, the washer had problems with clunking and running very noisy and the dryer did not dry clothes in a timely fashion. Last Sunday (06/06/10), my washer stopped draining, flooded my hardwood floors, started buzzing uncontrollably, and started popping sparks and smoking. I was able to safely unplug it.

Maytag sent out a technician 2 days later (he was very nice and knowledgeable by the way). He told me that there was a leak in one of the major seals, the transmission was shot, the ball bearings needed replaced, the drain pump was broken and a belt had snapped. Final price tag is greater than $850. I can't believe that a washer that was less than 5 years old broke down that quickly or badly. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the dryer, but I'm going to buy a completely new set tonight of another brand!

I want my money back! I am out the $138.03 for the service call, plus now I'm going to have to purchase a new washer / dryer set to clean my family's clothes.

We also purchased a Maytag Legacy washer from Home Depot less than 3 years ago. We are a family of five so though not tiny, not extreme either. We paid good money for the washer thinking it would be a good investment and that we wouldn't have to purchase another one for some time to come. Boy, were we wrong! Our old beat up washer (different brand I might add) came to us second hand and we got easily 10 good years out of it. Yes, my husband is very handy and had to replace a belt here and other worn out things there but that was a ** good washer. Just yesterday, we ended up going to a second hand appliance place and picked up a reasonably decent Kenmore for $200.00. Let's just say we are hoping for the best. ** to you Maytag. BTW, our even newer, more expensive Whirlpool fridge is already acting up. I'm beginning to see a pattern here.

My wife and I were given a two-month old Maytag Legacy Series (heavy duty) washer. We've had it now for nine months or so. We have a house full of six people and enjoyed the large capacity of the washer. But for the past month, the machine has been increasingly noisy. Trying to grind the dirt out is my speculation of the noise that comes from down the hall.

A small reoccurring puddle of water shows up, peaking out from under the machine, not good. I rolled the ugly beast over on its side to see the belt and three pulley arrangement on its underside. Leaking evidence from the tube's main bearing and the (possibly) transmission in the right rear corner had a terrible case of dry worn out loose wobbly bearing.

This noise maker will be a booger to replace. I searched the net for other complaints and see the same problems with Maytag washers less than two years old. I have settled on a yard sale washer to replace this beast and cannot afford a service call. The water on the floor has since dried up and the laundry room is quiet.

I purchased a Maytag Legacy series washer/dryer combo (heavy duty commercial quality). What a joke! Shortly after purchase (@ 1 yr and a half later), the washer became noisy and began to leak. Estimated cost of repairs were ridiculous. Therefore, I purchased another washer. Then the dryer issue began, from overheating to no heat.

I think Maytag owes a lot of consumers damages for replacements and repairs due to their faulty products. These products should have never been marketed because obviously they were not tested properly. This has caused me extra expense to replace washer and now the dryer, and expense of repairing flooring and baseboards.

I purchased a Maytag Legacy series washer/dryer combo in 2007 and recently the clothes have been coming out soaking wet. After removing the access panel, I can see that a plastic pulley has broken and the belt that spins the tub isn't engaging the motor. So I have no spin cycle. I load soaked clothes into my dryer and run it for 2 cycles due to the excess water. This has doubled my gas expenses and my dryer will probably fail due to the extra weight it's spinning.

I bought a Maytag washer legacy series from Home Depot 5 years ago. The spin cycle sounds like the space shuttle and leaks at the bottom of motor/transmission. The repair cost is too expensive that I had to buy a new washer. What happened to Maytag quality?

I purchased Maytag Legacy series washer 2005 from Home Depot. The washer tub seal begins to fail 1 1/2 years later. The washer makes very loud grinding sound as bearings begin to fail. The tub begins leaking water on the floor. I called Maytag. They stated that the 1 year warranty on the moving parts has expired. Maytag stated that this is a common problem in the Legacy washers (if you read the other consumer complaints on this site, you will see this issue discussed multiple times). Maytag offered no remedy to fix or replace the defective washer. There was water damage on the wash-room floor. I had to purchase another washer within a very short span of time.

As many consumers on this site have expressed, a 20-year-old Maytag is a fine piece of machinery. It can very well last a lifetime. But because of the reliability of these older Maytag washers/dryers, Maytag could not sell the volume needed for increased profitability - as a Maytag washer/dryer set did indeed last a very long time with no need for replacement. Also, the cost to produce these quality machines increased above consumer tolerable price points. The result was that Maytag began producing poorly engineered and constructed machines with a short life span. This worked for a short time, but then most consumers (except a few like me) became aware of the decline of Maytag and bought other brands. Maytag went bankrupt. Whirlpool bought them. It doesn't appear that Whirlpool has brought back the Maytag of old now, does it?

I bought my Maytag Washer & Dryer from Home Depot mid 2004, thinking they would last indefinitely, based on a believed (now understood to be only a marketed) reputation of this brand name.

Just like the complaints that I now read here, my Maytag Legacy series washer (Model SAV515DAWW) started making a noise like a jet engine. Soon after, it began leaking all over my floor when it went into the spin cycle.

I had someone look at it for me and, upon investigation, found that it was leaking slowly from the bottom seal on the drum, which was especially evident when the washer was on the spin cycle.

I was researching whether it was economical to fix it. As it costs around $100 just for the first 15 minutes of a service call, and based on what I read here, I believe it's pointless to repair a machine that is flawed in design, so I will be forced to buy a new washer.

If people with Maytag Legacy series models keep completing complaint forms on this same issue, perhaps there will be numbers large enough to warrant Maytag to do the right thing and compensate its customers.

Right now, I will never buy Maytag, or any expensive appliance again for that matter, without researching it first.

Unfortunately, I'm one of many educators suffering economic hardship due to budget cuts, so replacing my washer is an expense I'd rather not have right now. Any bright, forward-thinking company might spot that Americans, and perhaps citizens of other countries too, are making a cultural shift. Most of us are having epiphanies about our past practices of spending, leading us to become more frugal and conscious of our energy and consumption footprint on this earth.

Why are products not made to last anymore? (I've had similar problems with vacuum cleaners and microwave ovens too.) If you ask me, America could help dig itself out of this depression if it went back to ethically manufacturing goods that are durable, and earth-friendly too, thus building longterm customer-loyalty that weathers financial cycles which are driven by throwaway-and-replace consumerism and must-have-now policies.

Imagine how large the appliance graveyard is that we leave our children--it's littered with Maytag washers, containing non-recycled materials that do not break down or are decaying into our soil and water table. Come on--wake up America and think!

Bought the washer from Home Depot in late 2007. It leaks now and makes noise on the spin cycle. There are many reports about this problem with this product. Maytag is supposed to be built to last.

Maytag Washer SAV205 DAWW, Legacy Series, Purchased October 2003.
After about 6 months, washer became really loud - Service on washer was still under warranty, washer was fairly quiet for another 6 months and then became really loud again. Service call again (not under warranty) repairs including service call approximately 165 - 185.00 Last year washer started making grinding sound, contacted Maytag by letter on June 29, advised they would give me a 15% discount on any replacement Maytag or any other Whirlpool branded appliance. Decided to forego their offer, and put up with the grinding noise.

Two weeks ago I noticed water on the floor (small amount) and had a service call today. Repair person said the washer needed a "main tub seals with bearing" and it would cost anywhere from $300.00 to $350.00. It was his recommendation to replace the washer since we were running the risk of causing the wooden floor under the washer to deteriorate. Also was told the washer had probably been leaking for about 6 months from the appearance of the interior.
I just sent another email to Maytag. I am furious...I bought the washer and dryer following the completion of a first floor laundry and figured they would outlast my husband and me - We're in our 70's, so it's not like I'm doing an excessive amount of laundry.

I sure wish there was a class-action suit, I asked Maytag if we could receive more than a l5% credit, what I would really like is to have the washer fixed and would be willing to share costs with Maytag (their response to me was that they also were consumers and understood my frustration...) How insulting!

I purchased a Maytag Legacy Series washer and dryer with my Tax return in 2007 thinking, like so many others, that this set up would last many years, like my parents' set had. Boy was I wrong! The washer has been terrible. About 6 months ago it started to sound like a piece of heavy machinery that had not been oiled for a year. Like most people, I am an extremely busy person and didn't have the time, or the money, to get it fixed. Over the last few weeks it has begun to leak water more and more, to the point where we can't walk into the Laundry Room without bringing a Canoe and a Paddle! This is mystifying. How many of us could provide a product / service for thousands and thousands of people, have it work for a very short period of time, and then make every one of those customers pay again to have it fixed! Or, even worse, purchase a new one all over again! We would be in jail if we did things like this. Like everyone else, I don't have the money to purchase a new washer. Nor do I have the money to go to the laundrymat for the next year while I save up the money. Do I take the family vacation money, that we have waited 5 years to go on, and spend it so that my family can have clean clothes? This is the choice I have to consider?

Bought a Maytag Legacy Washer in 2007 from Home Depot. it is 2 years old. About 6 months ago, it started making noises on the spin cycle, now it has completely gone Kaput. The ball bearings are ruined and the entire motor needs to be replaced. I just found out today that the transmission may still be under warranty, but laborscosts of repairs and all else you all have complained about have led my husband to just buy another washer - not a Maytag or Whirlpool (which, by the way, are the same company now) So he bought a New Zealand brand - over $800 - after we only 2 years ago paid over $500 for the Maytag Legacy. I will never buy a Maytag or Whirlpool again and I will tell all my friends about this experience (and how there have been so many similar complaints)

I bought Maytag washer Legacy series, model number mtw5570tq0, from Home Depot on 09/05/07. On 08/21/08, 11 months later, we had to have the timer replaced since it would not turn and also sparked. This is within the one year warranty. I did not figure a washer that cost less than $400 would need a extended warranty which costs $337 for three years or $132 for one year; also, since my mother had a Maytag for over 20 years and needed no warranty or service repair the entire time. Guess what? Within 11 months of the new timer being installed, it is now not working again. So I'm guessing the timer has only an 11-month life.

Now my washer's one year warranty is up and they will give me the part but I have to go to one of their repairmen to have it replaced which is at least $70 for labor. I am afraid the motor will also go after I read other complaints even with the timer being bad for other people. This is so bad for Whirlpool and Maytag. Hopefully, people will open their eyes and not buy from them. In this day and age, we cannot afford to be paying for an appliance that was less than one year old and now less than two years old that has the same problem. They sure don't make things to keep on working like they used to. It seems they are more interested in selling you the extended warranty for almost as much as the item cost. Now, I see why. Hey, I bet the Maytag repairman isn't sitting around looking for work anymore. His job seems more secure than most.

Bought the Maytag legacy Series washer and dryer in 2005. have had trouble off and on with the washer. for the last 6 months water has been seeping out. every so often the tub would quit turning but we could finally get it to turn. like anything else we fix what we can. replaced a hose that was leaking but found that water was leaking from everywhere now. tub has quit turning and will not start. you can rock the tub back and forth with very little hand pressure.

very bad time to have to spend money that is not there. how long had it leaked before it surfaced outward. won't know if floor is damaged until washer is removed. husband is required to wear hazmat or fire retardant clothing when working. missed a days work when washer went down and had hazmat clothes to wear.

I bought a maytag legacy washer sav515daww back in 9-2003 and after the warranty was up it started leaking water and and oily substance on my floor. I finally had to buy a new washer because was told that it would be cheaper to buy a new one. I was just looking on line a found a maytag servicematter form for june of 2004. It was for the exact same problems that we were having. Why was there not a recall? Had to go and spend 500.00 on a new one with the money I really did not have.

I like many other people purchased the Maytag Legacy Series washer and Drier at Home Depot in 2005. Bearings went out when it was under warranty. I did not purchase extended warranty believing that my Maytag washer would last 20-25 years like my mothers had. Wrong. Transmission went out, I paid $300 to have it fixed (cheaper than buying a new washer and drier, which by the way I paid over $1100.00 for these)

When the repairman brought back the washer he told me that their yard was full of these Legacy Series washers that the transmission had gone out on. Now the washer stops when full of water and you have to turn it back to spin to make the water go out. I did try and talk to Maytag when the transmission went out, but all they could offer was if it wasn't under warranty they could not help me, even after admitting that they had had problems with these. My drier now also makes a noise when you first start it up. I bought a Maytag thinking I was buying a product that would last a long time. Will never purchase a Maytag or Whirlpool again. I guess it's just buyer beware, you don't even know what you are buying when you buy a Maytag you are really buying a Whirlpool. They should have to recall this product, it is clearly a badly built washer.

I bought a Maytag Legacy series model SAV515DEWW washing machine in 08/04 from Home Depot. I was told this was the top a top of the line appliance. In the first year, under warranty, the motor bearings went out, and service came and replaced them with no problems. One year later, I had bought an extended warranty, and the bearing went out again!

Service came out and replaced the motor bearing (it sounds like a jet engine. Well, this has now lasted for around 18 months and guess what? Yes, the motor bearing is out again! And now I have no warranty. So, 3 motor bearings in 5 years. I believe the service man called it a triple lip seal, motor hub and bearing. Anyway, I will not be purchasing Maytag, or whirlpool products EVER again. And will do my best to deter anyone else from doing the same.

I have a Maytag Legacy top load washer. It was purchased new, from Home Depot on 11/19/2004. It has been to the repair shop 1 time already. It took almost 3 weeks for it to be repaired, waiting on parts, that problem was fixed. Now,It vibrates so bad on the spin cycle that I do small loads only. I have read this seems to be a problem common to these machines. It will not spin the water or soap out of the clothes. What I would like to know,is why Maytag has no solution to this problem. I had an whirlpool washer for over 14 years,I needed a larger machine so I bought this so called name brand. NEVER AGAIN!!!

In 2005 my wife and I purchased our Maytag SAV515DEWW (Legacy Series - Clothes Washer). Since then the washer has been breaking down for the past 3 years. I am not glad we felt the urgent need to continue to purchase 3 years of extended warrantees, costing us roughly $250 (like an extended fee). At this point we will not be buying a Maytag Washer or getting another extension on the warrantee after our current warrantee expires. Ok - I'll try to summarize (enjoy!):

Our washers first couple of repairs started with the comment we were using the wrong high suds detergent leading to a bad motor & belt (not spinning/rinsing the clothes properly/stopping - visualize dripping clothes after washer is done). A later service call was a new timer mechanism found to be the cause that lead to the 2nd motor to burn out (probably 1st motor too. Fyi - motor burn did smell throughout the house) - so after a 3rd motor, another belt, & another water pump (1st replacement was found rusted & had cracked) it lasted awhile longer.

Slow forward to a new transmission, again new belt(s) from bad transmission, again the special gaskets & seals, ... to the point that our washer now has roughly $1200 in new parts installed NOT including service calls & labor. Im not sure of the complete inventory gone into our washer, but the major parts are mentioned. We NOW have a water leak with a jet engine noise (yes called service again) - relating to a bad seal & bad bearings to be replaced. Our repair service is good - 'My Kudos to Ted ( & Yes, we have gotten to know him on a 1st name basis)'. Ted has asked if our washer can be replaced because of its big history of big problems, BUT you have to understand the small picture here that EACH year's new warrantee starts the repair cost at $0 for our same (rebuilt?) washer. ( Yes - this is where you can LOL ).

I don't have a total. For efforts in setting up service call & being there (I think we are on the 8th repair? sorry-losing track-lol), loss of use, don't know if any damage to floor, .... Most personal consequences are time spent getting it fixed, loss of use, and hearing my wife complain, ... again complain, ... again complain, .... You get the idea of Many Times EACH Time. Which I do agree, we should not be having these washer problems.

Purchased a Maytag Legacy Series washing machine in 2003 from Home Depot, (model sav515daww). One week after the warranty expired the machine started making a sound when spinning similar to the sound of a jet engine. The machine also started leaking water out of the bottom. Called the Maytag repairman and was told that the bearings were going out. Since the warranty had expired, we had to pay for the repair.

In 2005, it happened again, same noise, same leakage, same broken part. We again paid for the repair, and were told that the replacement parts were improved and that the problem would be fixed. Just this week, (June 2008), we are having the same noise and same leakage. We do not want to pay for a third repair and have read several stories online of people having similar problems. Still Maytag has not recalled this washing machine.

We have paid several hundred dollars in repairs. We could have bought a new washing machine by now with the money we spent on repairs.

I purchased a Maytag Legacy Series washer in July 2005. Within one month, the machine was shaking so violently during the spin cycle that it walked across my laundry room, even with a full load. The first repairman said my floor was too soft. The next repairman said it was the base, which they came out (again) and replaced. The next repairman said it needed little sticky cups on the feet. The next repairman said it needed to be balanced, and he adjusted the feet.

The next repairman said it was new screws, which he ordered and came out (again) to replace. Home Depot says their hands are tied and I must go through Maytag so-called techline. Now here it is a full year later, and I call Maytag Corporate to complain that they have NOT been able to fix this machine. They send out yet another repairman to determine if I'm having the same problem as before. He comes out, tells techline he doesn't know what's wrong, and they say they'll get back to me. I call two days later to find out when they're taking this machine away, and they tell me that a vector ring has been ordered!

I am absolutely DONE with Maytag. They refuse to deem the $500 machine unrepairable and they want me to continue wasting my time waiting for bogus repairmen that can't fix the machine. It's a total fraud. Even the repairmen have said they don't know what's wrong, and it's like they'll get in trouble if they tell techline that the machine is unrepairable. In total, how many times has a repairman visited my house for the SAME problem? I count 8 .. that's EIGHT repairmen in one year! (not including the repairman that replaced the motor that was recalled). And yet, for a measly $500 they refuse to acknowledge that it's a lemon and refund my money, thereby saving themselves a customer. I'm done with Maytag.
