Just adding my voice to the chorus. My heavy duty mixer is not leaking oil yet, but that may only be because it is unusable. I'm hoping that only a shear pin broke, along with the plastic housing. It is certainly not capable of handling the ingredient quantities stated in the instruction manual. Shame on Whirlpool.

Poor design and manufacturing forces the purchase of replacement parts.

I bought my second Kitchen Aid stand mixer almost two years ago. As I was using it the whisk beater broke two wires; then just like the first one I had it started leaking oil. I was mixing cake icing.

Oil got into my food.

I bought a KitchenAid Professional Series 600 stand mixer because the motor was supposed to be strong enough to withstand the kneading of bread dough for prolonged periods of time. I have used this mixer for two years and last week made a batch of brioche which requires kneading for 15 minutes. It started to make a grinding sound so I booked a service appointment.

In the meantime I looked online and found that the transmission is made of plastic. PLASTIC! How will this be able to stand up to dough kneading? It doesn't. Now I can't be sure that it will be replaced with metal and so this will become a problem again. I need a new stove and although I had been told that KitchenAid is a good brand I will not EVER buy another kitchenaid product again. It's on my list with Sony and Bionnair. Duds, all of them.

Unresolved.

I have a Kitchenaid professional stand mixer (the 600 series) and after moderate (once per month) use kneading bread, the motor speed control went out of whack. On turn on, it would only rev up to maximum speed, a SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. It would stay pegged at max speed until eventually shutting itself off. Completely unusable. I called the customer service center and was told that I could not order a spare motor board online. Instead, I had to take it to a licensed service agent, a nearby fix it shop. This guy (was good) and had to order the replacement board for 75 and then charge me another 100 to replace it.

So now, my 350 mixer just got 175 in repairs after light-to-moderate use. 3 uses later, being extra careful not to strain this heavy duty mixer, it is once again rev'ing to high speed again. The motor speed control is broken once again, and I hve to decide on spending another 175 to repair it or simply leaving KitchenAid for good and buying the well-rated Cuisanart model. The choice is easy, I'm leaving KitchenAid. Their quality is lacking and their product support is terrible.

Anybody reading this: do not buy the professional series mixer! For a high end, heavy duty appliance, the professional series has too many problems. The motor control board is built and assembled with 80's technology, many of the wear and tear components are plastic, the mixers are known to shed metal bits, leak oil, and have faulty switches and controls. Worse yet, unlike Sears, KitchenAid will not sell you replacement parts at cost -- making any repairs extra costly.

SAFETY. A mixer should NOT rev up to its highest setting on initial turn on. This is far from a fail safe condition. SERVICE: Not shipping service parts to customers is a terrible way to do business. COSTS: When it costs >50% of the brand new cost for a simple electronics board replacement, something is wrong. There is a fault in the design, yet I end up paying 175 to repair the fault because the short warranty was up.

I was given a standup, heavy-duty, mixer (very expensive) as a gift about three years ago. About a year ago, it started leaking oil, getting worse each time it was used. I have the lift-up Kitchen-Aid mixer, which is about 40 years old, never a problem--no leaks, nothing. These newer models are for the birds. Where could I get this repaired without sending in miles away, which the shipping costs would be more than the mixer is worth. Thanks
