GE Ice Dispensers Serve Up More Than Ice

Lots of things can, and do, go wrong with GE washing machines, including:

Or, as Ann of Philadelpia puts it:
As an employee for an appliance parts wholesaler, I can tell you that the GE washer (also sold as Hotpoint and RCA) is the worst design in the history of major appliances.

Others we've heard from recently would probably agree ...

Liza of Glen Rock, NJ June 3, 2009

I bought a GE Washer in 2007. A couple of weeks ago it stopped agitating/spinning. I called a serice repair place and was told it was the motor and would cost somewhere around 350. The machine cost me a little over 400. I called GE Customer Service and they asked if I used a certified GE repairman, and unknowingly I hadn't (although I had to pay this guy 75 to come out.) I then had to wait about a week to have one of their GE Certified Repairperson come. I said they would have to agree this was defective since it was only 2 years old.

No should have to replace thier washer every 2 years. They agreed it was defective and they would pay for parts - I would have to pay labor. I figured around 100. Now without a washer for 2 weeks - they came today and said yes the motor was bad. He replaced and it cost me 187.24. I paid it but personally don't feel I should have had to pay anything given that the machine was only 2 yaers old. Glad to have it fixed, i just paid it.

I did two load of laundry and its broken again. I now called - they can't send anyone out until Friday. Too bad so sad for me is thier attitude. My husband is unemployed and they could care less. Are they going to pay me for time to take off work or the money I've used at the laundromat? Hardly! Porr product and poor service. 75.00 for one repairman, 50 in quarters at the laundromat, half a day off waiting for them 60 and 187.24 for repair service that didn't hold up.

2 high end, barely 3 yr old, GE Profile appliances went during the same week. The service tech came to the house and said the "Clutch is gone" on Washer WPGT 9360, cost to replace 325, and the Motherboard on Refrigerator PSC23NG is 100 to replace. I told Tech to start on Motherboard, and forget the washer for now. The price went down to 225. I asked about warranty and he said that this was the price, take it or leave it. The tech after an hour on the washer, told me he didn't have all the parts, and would return in 1 week. Upon research I found that the tech lied. The motherboard was defective, and was being replaced at no charge. The clutch is the transmission, and has a 5 year warranty. I want my washer repaired under warranty

joan of carolina shores, NC May 29, 2009

washer tub gasket shredded. 2nd time. part is defective. manufacturer sent out a tech that stated that this happens all the time. part was 43.00. labor and service call 175.00. company would not even as a courtesy, pick up the full charge. tech left. he was paid for his time. i am left with a machine that shreds everything that goes into it. will no longer endorse any g.e. products or services. luckily for me was reimbursed for a comforter that was ripped apart and was useless.

April 07 we purchased a GE model#WJRR4170G0WW top loader washing machine. On 5/16/09 it broke. 4/19/09 called independent repair man who informed me the motor is bad. Had to pay 75.00 for him to diagnoise the problem and the repairs will be 240.00 parts/labor. This repair man is honest and a good person-unlike most I've run across..not complaining about his service, however GE products are very poorly made from what I am told. Two years is all their products last? Unbelievable! Will not buy GE ever again.. WE are facing a major expense we can not afford..either buy a new at the same cost to repair a 2 year old product. Products truly should be made better, to last at least 10.. heck my old washer lasted over 20, but it was a Maytag!

bought washer WSDR316G1WW 17 months ago. Didn't clean very well, but was very quiet. Suddenly it quit spinning and agitating (except for me). found enclosed wiring diagram. traced trouble to motor controller. indicator flashes 6 times = rotor locked. I can turn it by hand, so it isnt locked. manual says to replace motor at 300!

called GE and was told "tough luck, should have bought the extended warranty" I told them they should have built a better quality product. informed their snotty employee to do something impossible with the washing machine, if they got their head out first. My new house will be finished in a couple of months, and it will NOT GET a single item labeled GE. This doesn't fix my current problem, but it sure will prevent some new ones!

Carolyn of Collinsville, IL May 8, 2009

I have a GE washer that is three years old. I called a repair man out due to the loud noise it is making. He said that the transmission is going out. Said it would be a 250.00 repair. Also stated that this was the second one in a week he had a call on. Told me to call GE and if they would not help, let it run till it stop and buy a new one. Am I the only person that feels a washer that is used for two people should last more than three years. This washer is situated behind doors in my kitchen, because of the noise it makes we cannot stand to be in the kitchen while the washer is running as for as that goes we can't stand to be in the living room either.

Called G.E. said the only thing they would do is sell us the transmisson for 127.00 this is suppose to be a break. Normal cost is 155.00. After I pay for installation it will cost 250.00 That means in three years I will be paying OVER 1/2 the cost of the washer to have it repaired. I was told that is why they sell extended warrantys. I feel if you put out good money for a product you should get more than three years of service from it. They use to guarantee the transmissions for five years, they no longer do that. I WONDER WHY!!!!!!!!

Ronnie of Vanceboro, NC May 2, 2009

I have a ge washing machine that is less than 2yrs. old and it is broke for the second time. I think ge should replace this machine because its a lemon.

Judith of Irvine, CA April 27, 2009

I bought a GE washer in Sept. 08. It never seemed to clean the clothes well and it made a very high squeal noise. Sometimes the water would remain even after the spin cycle and soap deposits were left on the clothes. I called for service and they said that it needed a new transmission.

After 3 months of still having problems, I called for service again and was told that it needed a new transmission again. This new washer now has had 3 transmissions and again, it's not working. GE refuses to replace my washer. It's only 7 months and they said they they will fix it (again) even though it will cost them almost double this time to fix it then it would for me to go down the street to buy a new one. I can't understand the logic in this. Here I am trying to keep our family's clothing clean and ready for my children to go to school each day and it now has become impossible. What can I do?
