GE Refrigerators: Contaminated Ice

Consumer Complaints & Reviews

GE continues to make defective doors that rust from the front from escaped moisture. This a rogue company that pays no income tax and rips us off more by selling us new doors at retail. I guess their lobbyists control the FTC and that why there is no recall in my case!

I have a GE refrigerator, model # GSH22JFXA and serial # FR208431. It has the metal rod with the plastic surrounding it. Today I made some iced tea. As I finished drinking it, I noticed all of my ice melted but this big rigged piece at the bottom of my glass. I am one that likes to chew ice, so I actually picked up my glass and turned it to my mouth to. Oh my God, a piece of plastic was hanging out of my mouth! We built this house only 3 years ago, and the appliances are brand new. Please, GE, recall this product before someone gets seriously injured or worse.

Plastic sugar in the ice maker has broken into pieces and come out in our drinks. I want to know when GE is going to recall these things and replace them with stainless steal ones. When is Consumer Affairs going to do anything? Can't they see there is plainly a problem? Come on.

I too, am afraid I might have swallowed shavings of sharp plastic glass from the ice maker's auger. I have a GE Side by Side refrigerator with model no. GSS22WGPA BB and serial no. DF246778 which was installed on 8/1/2003. After more than 7 years of refrigerator service, I have had so many problems with my GE refrigerator. But finding an inch-long piece of a shaved, sharp piece of plastic glass on July 11 2011 scared me to death. And what shocked me even more is finding out on ConsumerAffairs.com that the problem is very common. Apparently, there have been many reports of people reporting the same problem with the ice maker's auger.

If so, why in the heck is there not a company recall on the auger? Does somebody have to seriously choke and die before something is done? Does GE not care about the human welfare of its customers? Apparently not. I once had trusted in GE, not now. You would think by now someone would have contacted me. GE could have warned me about the likeliness of what could happen with the faulty auger, so I can keep an eye out for my family's safety. A letter, a courtesy call, anything to show GE cared, would have been nice. If GE wants to wait until a lawsuit, that is fine with me; but here is what went down today.

I came home from work, rinsed some dishes, and used the garbage disposal. After turning on the garbage disposal, something was refusing to get chopped up. It turned out to be a sharp piece of plastic glass. I had no idea where it was from, but I hung onto it. Later on, I went to get some ice out of the ice maker, and there was no ice coming out. I thought the ice was clogged together. I took the ice maker out of the refrigerator and started de-clogging the ice. I soon noticed the auger looked kind of funny. Upon further examination, I realized the auger was clearly broken, and not just a little piece, a whole piece of a spiral was missing. It was clearly broken off. I could see the rough edges where the pieces have broken off.

I was part of the "GE Moisture Class Settlement" in 2005, regarding my refrigerator. I filled out the claim form and sent it out along with a copy of the receipt for repair. I received reimbursement for that repair and thought that was the end of that. I was completely unaware that there would be more problems coming. In 2009 I had another moisture related problem and the repairman said their was no charge because of my previous claim. He also said that I would eventually have problems with my door.

He was correct. I called and spoke with 2 different people from GE about resolving the problem without any charge. John and Tara told me that I was suppose to call and make an appointment. with them at the time of the settlement to get the doors replaced. I asked him why I would think that I need the doors replaced. He said that it was in the packet of information sent to me. I received no packet regarding this and I told John so. He offered to have the doors replaced for $425 + tax.

I refused this offer because I did not receive any packet and I believe that no packet was ever sent to me in the first place. Therefore I was not given the opportunity to have my doors replaced. John also claims that he has my name down as calling but does not know why there was no appointment. made. I know that I did not call. I believe they are fabricating information to avoid fixing my problem for free.

When I spoke with Tara, I told her that I was going to take this to Small Claims Court and she told me that it would not work because I still wouldn't get my refrigeration system fixed. My refrigerator is leaking all over the floor. Each morning and evening I put down towels on the floor and under the ice maker shaft on the door. On top of that, I am disabled which makes replacing the towels very hard for me. I am on a fixed income.

I own a GE Side by Side Refrigerator Model No. GSS22SGMD BS, Serial No. GD 209676. There was a moisture problem with this model that GE was aware of, but failed to notify, or remedy the problem until a class action suit was filed in 2004. All owners of this model were supposed to be notified by GE as part of the settlement agreement with the court. Just prior to the final hearing, the attorneys found out that many of the owners of this model had not been notified as required by order of the court, so GE agreed to extend the claims cut off date, and extend the warranty for a additional year, along with some other terms prior to the new final settlement cut of date in late 2006, per court order.

I just found out about the settlement yesterday and that the date to file a claim had expired, but that GE might still offer some of the other concessions if you contact them. I contacted them and they offered me a discount on a new refrigerator, or said if I purchase a new set of doors from them for $425 plus tax and shipping, they would pay for the labor to install the doors. I was asked for my phone number, and when I gave it to them, they said I was not shown as registering the fridge. I had given her my cell number to use to contact me. So I told her this was not my number at the time, and gave her my old home number. She still showed no registration.

She told me that that was the way they check to see if the appliance had been registered, and their way of looking them up. After I hung up, I realized why I was not showing up in the computer. When I sent in my registration card, I had not included my phone number because I did not want to be solicited by GE, or its affiliate companies for things like extended warranties, insurance, mortgages, etc. I normally do not provide this information, because I figured they would be using my name for verification of registration. I was never notified by GE, and I think using phone numbers to track registration is a poor method of tracking buyers' information. When I called today, I was given a case number to claim (no. **) a discount on a new purchase. At no time did anyone request my name during this process.

I own a GE side by side model GSS201EPACC purchased in 2003. We have had continuous problems with this fridge. The door was replaced to fix frozen icemaker, icemaker was paddle replaced. The fridge leaked frequently on the floor, a part was replaced to fix that, the circuit board was replaced. The fridge failed while we were away and we lost all food in the fridge and freezer. It was several hundred dollars. The service call was about $100, and estimated repair was $914. Serviceman recommended buy a new fridge! So, after all my repair expenses and the loss of hundreds of dollars of food, I have a $1000 non-working fridge, and need to buy another one. I am out the cost of the fridge ($1000 +, the cost of all my repairs --getting close to $1000, plus several dollars of food). I have to buy another new fridge. It will definitely not be a GE!

In June 2008, we purchased GE Profile 3-door refrigerator model PFSS5NJWASS. In May 2009 while still under GE factory warranty, it started freezing in various parts of refrigerator section. The technician who came attempted repair, however, left us no receipt as to what was done. We purchased the extended warranty as per letter received from GE Service Protection Plus effective July 2009 then again July 2010 - July 2011.

Currently, we have had 9 service calls as of 11/16/10. Still freezing in different parts of refrigerator resulting in food loss and spoilage. Since May 2010, dispenser board, electrical damper, 2 mother boards, side vent, freezer sensor have been replaced and now a damper was again ordered for a scheduled repair next week. Who will take responsibility for this product? Not GE! Not the GE affiliated warranty company? The Consumer? Take responsibility or stop making inferior products!

I live in Secaucus, NJ. In 2006, I purchased a G.E. Bottom Freezer Refrigerator (Model No. PFS22SBSBSS, Serial No. RL045629) for around $2000 at the Home Depot in Secaucus, NJ. I bought a G.E. appliance because I believed the brand would be a quality appliance for years to come. I also purchased the extended service warranty offered by the Home Depot through G.E. Since that time of my purchase, our family has lost thousands of dollars of food to spoilage and wasted many hours on the phone with the G.E./Assurant service company. On numerous occasions the refrigerator has broken down with the same problem, it does not stay cold.

Through the extended warranty and service contract, I have had repairs on the appliance. I have been given different advice by different associates of the repair service like, is there dust on the extension cord? Is it plugged in? Or you should unplug your refrigerator every six months for at least an hour. I am very disappointed that such an expensive product from such a highly regarded company is so fragile and unreliable. Service issues for the same problem have been reoccurring since 2008. I am currently waiting for another repair on my refrigerator. Each time it is the same problem. The refrigerator does not stay cold. I have thrown away groceries each time. Unfortunately the replacement compensation for groceries is limited to $300 one time over the life of the warranty. We surpassed that in 2008. I have two small children to feed, and for that, I need a dependable refrigerator. Every time service is needed, the average time it takes a service technician to arrive is 6 days. That's at least 6 days with no refrigeration.

After speaking to the service company, I feel like I am not getting through to them. I hope there is someone in your department that can better understand the situation. I look forward to hearing from someone that can help. These are the reference numbers related to my refrigerator service issues, reference nos: **.

This is in regards to my GE Arctic side by side refrigerator. It never really did work well. We'd open the freezer and have a frozen ice sculpture coming out of the ice maker because it was spewing water inside the freezer which was then freezing. We'd have frozen lettuce one day and then turn around the next to find that the temperature in the refrigerator was in the mid 50's.

Frequently, we'd get into the freezer and all the foods would be mushy because it had temperatures in the 50's as well. The temperature always had a roller coaster type behavior on both sides. Yesterday, the entire thing went out. The only thing functioning on the refrigerator are the light bulbs when you open the door. We moved into our house in 2006 and it had all new appliances. We haven't hit the fourth year mark yet (late November). Now I have to replace the refrigerator and over the range microwave (both GE substandard products). After reading all the posts with the exact same problems, I'm certainly not throwing any more money into these machines.

I just need an operations question answered. About two years ago, I purchased a GE model GSS23QG/GSS23QS. I did not want the water line/icemaker hooked up. Now the red light for the water remains on. I need to know how to turn the light off.

I took delivery of a GE Profile refrigerator on 8/11/2010. I have had service out 4 times since then and had to have my compressor replaced already. Now GE refuses to come out anymore. I filed a complaint with them online, and here is their response:

"Thank you for contacting us regarding your refrigerator. We know how frustrating it can be when a product fails to operate properly or does not meet your expectations. I have reviewed the information you provided, as well as information detailed in your case, and feel that the situation was treated in a fair and appropriate manner by our Consumer Relations Department. We appreciate your comments and value you as a GE consumer. However, we are not able to offer further concessions in this instance. If you need any further assistance with your appliance, please feel free to contact us at 1-800-386-1215."

I have escalated all the way up to the head of ABC Warehouse and they are sending me a replacement tomorrow. That said, why does ABC have to eat the cost of a new refrigerator when GE refuses to fix it?

In April 2006, my wife and I signed papers to buy a home in a 55 and above community in Arizona. On October 12, 2006, we closed on the house with all GE Profile Appliances except for the washer and dryer. Beginning of this year 2010, we started to have problems with the refrigerator not cooling properly. It was causing ice build up from the ice maker down through all the shelves creating a large ice cube. So I called a repair technician to give us and idea of what was wrong with the unit.

After talking to him and explaining the problem with the refrigerator and freezer temperatures rising and falling some times nearly 10 degrees, he said it was the mother board. When he made the repair, I told him of another problem about the build up of frost/ice that is located to the left behind the chiller drawer. He said that he had to order a part and install it which was a small heat pad that was placed over the area where the coolant lines ran because the refrigerator was poorly designed. In questioning these repairs, he said that he had done several of them in our area. After the repair was made, I started talking to our neighbors to find out that several of them had the mother boards replaced.

In our development, we have nearly 1,350 homes and the builder is still installing GE Profile units. Looking back at the issues that we had with the refrigerator, I really wish that we would had never had them (GE Profile Appliances) installed. I have heard through our area that people have had problems with the stoves, micro waves and dishwasher. By looking at several web sites, I have seen that there are a lot of complaints with these appliances. I wish that something could be done rather than just complaining about them.

My GE refrigerator has been slowly dying for several years. We stopped being able to use the ice maker about three years ago after a visit from a Sears rep who was here to repair the microwave which never worked properly again and we eventually had to replace. I walked in and the repair guy had my freezer open. When I asked why, he responded that he was just checking the model number. What I didn't realize is that the model number is not in the freezer side, it's on the refrigerator side. Anyway, I think he sabotaged the freezer because within two weeks, the ice maker was not working properly.

When we called, the service person said that there was a recall on the lining around the doors, but by the time we complained, the recall period was over. Over the last several weeks, ice has been building up in the freezer, to the point that I had to take everything out and defrost it. I'm not sure if GE has a new manufacturer, but our old refrigerator, also GE, but about 13 years old, is in great working condition. This new one is terrible and we could not get good service from GE or from Sears.

I would not recommend buying a GE product and I would definitely recommend against warrantying any appliance with Sears. They never send the same tech, so that you always start from scratch with a new person and the issue never gets resolved. It's a game so that they never have to pay out.

I purchased a GE Profile side-by-side refrigerator in August 2007 and have had numerous problems with it. The main problem is the computer component and fan located inside the refrigerator side. Ice continually forms around it and the fan begins to hit the ice and make a very loud (sometimes sounds like a small aircraft) noise. I have had a serviceman come out 7-8 times for this problem. The problem still exists, ice is beginning to form again and it is just a matter of time before the fan will hit the ice chunk forming.

I have had a serviceman come out and repair/replace the ice maker 2 times. And I had a problem with the fridge/freezer not maintaining proper temperature. I have had the water dispenser drip tray replaced 3 times because it begins to mold and if I try to clean it, the finish begins to come off. A white plastic cover just recently broke off in the freezer cheap plastic! I can't wait to replace this piece of junk. I just hope I can at least get 10 years out of it 7 more years.

I submitted a complaint in 2009 regarding the GE ice dispenser defect, which resulted in plastic shavings being deposited into our ice. GE sent out a tech who replaced the little cup at the back of the ice receptacle. Well, it has been exactly one year later, and the plastic has once again failed, and no ice is being dispensed. When will this end? I am getting angry!

GE Refrigerators: Contaminated Ice. In 2008, we found a small jagged and very sharp piece of broken clear plastic in the sink. I discarded it when we couldn't fine the source of the plastic. Months later we found the auger in our GE freezer that turns to dispense the ice was broken and missing some of it's plastic threads. We placed a call out to GE, and it was repaired and we were told by the GE repairman that this was a very unusual event and should not happen again.

In July of 2010 I found another small and very sharp piece of plastic in the sink. I knew exactly where to look and upon inspecting our GE freezer's ice bin found another shard of plastic (I kept these) in it. In order for these shards to get in the sink they had to be dispensed into our drinking glasses. This is extremely dangerous! We called for repair to see if we could get a metal auger or a fix for this since it's happened twice in two years and the response we received from GE and the repairman is that they don't consider this enough of a problem to recall and correct this part/issue.

We will not be be replacing this part again, as I will not put my family or friends at risk. The service fee for this was $80 which we paid and which can be applied to the overall cost of the fix ($250) but there is no way I will risk this happening a third time. GE really needs to fix this or at a minimum send out a caution letter to people with these components! I hope GE has not reduced this down to a cost/benefit analysis of human life vs the cost of repair. I researched this on the web and was disheartened to see that many others are experiencing the same problem.

GE Refrigerator Model GSS25PGMFCC ice maker auger dispenses ice very slowly. I took out the ice tray and noticed a large piece of auger had broken off and lodged in dispenser opening. I ordered new auger for $32.40 and replaced it. I noticed this is a common problem so I will be contacting GE customer service to add to their list of complaints so they will hopefully fix this problem with a metal auger.

We bought this refrigerator (top of the line) less than two years ago and have nothing but problems with the ice maker. The plastic cup that holds the auger in place to dispense ice breaks apart into the ice cause a choking hazzard and ice to not dispense. I called GE and asked them if they'd had complaints or a recall on this particular ice maker and they told me NO. I now see this web site and ALL THESE COMPLAINTS regarding the same issue. GE just LIED to me and probably many others. I'm very disappointed and will never buy another GE product.

On 1/5/2007 my wife and I purchased a GE #PSS26MGT WW refrigerator from Best Buys in San Jose. By June we had made our 1st of many calls to Best Buy's appliance service department to resolve the issue of bits of plastic found in our glasses of ice from the door dispenser unit. The service tech ordered and replaced the ice auger/bin. This worked for about 5 months, when once again bits and pieces of plastic were found mixed in with our ice. The largest piece was about 3/4" in diameter, but of more concern at the time was the small slivers which could be ingested easily. Repair people were called once again, and once again a new auger/bin arrived.

6 months later... Same issue again! Same repair! 5 months fater that, same issue, same repair... Get the picture! 6 months later, same issue, but this time the service tech replaced not only the auger/bin assy., he also ordered and replaced the motor/drive assy. 4 months go by and another GE appliance we own required repair. While the tech was out for this repair we asked about the ice bin/auger issue, as we had just found more plastic. The service tech advised that it's a poor design (You think?) and ordered a new auger/bin for us. The tech advised that we should empty out the bin on a regular basis to keep frozen ice from impacting the auger drive that is attached to the motor via a metal fork assy. RIGHT!

Here we are, May of 2010 and guess what... More plastic! We E-mailed GE via thier support web-site. A lady called within a few days. I explained the issue and the number of times we have attempted to have it resolved. She advised that since we did not have a "GE" service plan that we would have to contact Best Buy, have their tech come out, look at the problem and that the tech would contact GE engineering for further assistance in resolving the plastic issue. I guess we'll find out June 2nd if Best Buy service can speak with an engineer, we sure couldn't.

We now have a grandson who could easily swallow a large piece of plastic, so are we to examine each glass of ice? Even if we did, the smaller plastic shavings are lost within the ice, as they are sometimes translucent. Aside of the physical concerns, why should we have to deal with the phone calls and lost amount of time required to address each occurrence? This is unacceptable!

We purchased our home about 7.5 years ago. We purchased a full kitchen appliance package, all GE. I have always been a GE customer. After a while, we noticed the doors on the side-by-side freezing up. My husband thawed this frost-free freezer and we kind of forgot about it. It continued to do it and we were at a neighbors who told us she had the same problem and that there was a recall on this refrigerator. I went online, found out the info and called GE. They said I had called "just in time" for this so-called recall. They sent out a tech, who proceeded to tell me "yes, the doors were freezing up", but he wanted to "try something" before he replace them as they had to be ordered. I reminded him that the recall would be ending. His answer, "well, I am here so it's okay".

He put some part in the back of the ice maker. We thought it would be fixed, think again. My husband continued to have to thaw this freezer every two weeks. Finally, he said "you better call them again". The same tech came out and said "too bad, the recall is over". I was furious as was my husband. This tech stood in my kitchen for an hour pretending to be getting info from his superior, until I finally said enough is enough. He did nothing and was quite rude about it. At first, lying he had not been to my home before, but then admitting he had. I was never offered the papers that now I was told by Kelli at corporate I should have been. Now the ice maker is spitting out plastic parts as well. My husband, thank God, found it before he choke on it. I have found them in my glass of ice as well.

I called GE today as we cannot afford a new refrigerator. Their answer, "sorry, you didn't fill out the papers" which conveniently were never sent or offered and "we would be willing to give you a prorated $400. Discount on a new model if you get it from us, we will even wave shipping". Are they for real? Why would I buy another GE product after this and I cannot afford another refrigerator. Things are tight. GE was deceptive when the problem first started. The GE tech was rude and didn't do his job and in the end, we ended up with nothing but heartache and frustration. I will never buy another GE appliance. We have to thaw out the freezer every two weeks. We have lost untold amount of food. The entire freezer gets covered with ice on the inside and food thaws. Ice maker parts in ice and husband and I both could have choke on them.

When people visit, we are afraid if they use the ice that they could choke on a piece of the ice maker. I have been a GE customer all my life. My parents and I will never be again. As soon as I can afford to replace all the GE products I have in this house, I will be happy. GE doesn't care about their customers.

icemaker is shedding plastic parts in our ice and is a biohazard.

Exactly 1 year and 1 month to the day we purchased refrigerator, a portion of the ice maker broke, it was a plastic piece that separates the ice cubes as they are making. Piece looks like it should cost 25 cents to maybe a dollar. I called GE to order the part, and they told me they did not have such a part to replace broken part, so I asked them what I needed to do they said I need to "replace the whole ice maker unit". I asked for the manegers name and address to write him/her to help me. That was about 3 years ago, and I'm still waiting to hear from someone from GE.

Last week about 3:30 AM the ice maker started making a noise like it was shooting bullets in a war. Today we had to turn off electric box to install a light fixture. The ice maker had a constent shoot sound that went on for hours, until it burned itself out. Now we are out of a refrigerator. I will never purchase another GE product again. This refrigerator is the worst piece of junk I have ever owned.

Our GE side by side is exactly 5 years old. 2 years ago, several pieces of the plastic spiral part that skewers the ice into the opening broke without our knowledge. A piece ended up in my drinking glass (I couldn't see it because it was clear). I almost swallowed it. We had to replace that piece. This week another clear plastic component of the freezer broke into several pieces and once again, one of the pieces ended up in my drinking glass.

Fortunatly, this time I didn't swallow it and it ended up in our garbage disposal. Is this safe? I could have easily swallowed both pieces and choked. After the second time, that is it. Something has to be done. What if this had been a child? And what is going to break next?

We've owned GE Profile refrigerator (model PSS26PSWA SS) for 2 years and have had a few icemaker issues from the start - ice maker cube maker tray falling out of alignment causing water to pour into the collection bucket and freezing the cubes together).

Well, the most recent icemaker issue is that the dispenser will be slow to push ice out the door, then after a few seconds, siezes up and will not operate, though an electric buzz can be heard. We called out the GE serviceman (at $99 just to show up, mind you) and he looked at it and ordered us a part, a clear plastic cup at the back of the mechanism that had become chewed up. He insisted it was a cinch to install and recommended we replace it ourselves.

Well, the part arrived and I simply could not separate the plastic part holding the auger and blade mechanism, so I took the entire assembly to authorized GE service dealer this morning and they installed the little cup. Great, I came home, placed the tray into the freezer and dispensed 1/2 a glass of ice before hearing the same seizing up and then nothing.

Looking inside, I saw that the same little cup that we just replaced had been destroyed again by the icemaker - the plastic shards were deposited into the ice receptacle, mixed with the ice cubes. what now, another service call? our repair bills are mounting and we havent been able to dispense ice from the door in months. Buyer, please consider brands that do not use this type of icemaker as there is likely an inherent flaw with the design. beware!

The ice maker on my GE refrigerator stopped delivering ice. I removed the tray to discover a large chunk of plastic lodged at the back end. Thank God it did not dispense into one of our cups and choke us to death! GE MUST do fix this problem before someone chokes to death. Do they not value their long-standing reputation or their customer base? We replaced the unit for $145.

"Care Credit" was first suggested to me in the dentist office as a payment plan that offers no interest or fees; as a way of paying the dentist bill. The receptionist said I just have to sign a application for a credit check. This portion of the application did not have any detailed information. It did make reference to terms that were not attached or listed before the signature portion of the consent to a credit check. The recptionist said that the company would contact me regarding specific details of this offer.

A representative of "Care Credit" calls me and offers me a "payment protection" promotion in which she incorrectly explain. This caused me to get a late fee which the company refused to correct. This representative also explained that she would send me a complete package explaining the terms and agreement of the payment plan offered in the dentist's office, and that I am to read, sign, and return it.

After a week of not receiving this package, I made another request for this information. I still did not receive the package and later was sent a bill. Upon paying the monthly bill every month, I continued to inquire about my obligations and the overwhelming information on the bill that is in small print. The customer service department refused to discuss anything with me in detail by being rude and rushing me off the phone.

Since then, it's been months leading into years of calling this company for clarification and having my requests ignored; I still continue to pay the minimum monthly payment. After my complaints to the company's escalation department and the Better Business Bureau, GE Money Bank (Care Credit), still has not followed up with me about the issues of my account or third-party complaints.

So far, I have payed GE over $700, when initially I was only inquiring about their promotion and agreed to a credit check for a loan of $1000. To this day, my account has not been credited for any of my payments and I have been charged excessive interest, financing, and late fees. In conclusion, I have not been fully informed nor did I sign a consent or agreement about "Care Credit's" services before comitting to payment. The dentist's representative did not offer any information besides a credit check and that this promotion offers no interest and financing. The representatives of "Care Credit" did not have my written or verbal consent to any agreement of terms or financial obligations.

My GE Eterna ice dispenser stared cracking and my family and I have been finding plastic pieces in our drinks. Now the ice makers auger has jammed because the ice is being shoved in to the hole where the plastic cracked off, so now we have to manually get ice out of the tray.

After reading about the GE ice maker plastic problems GE is having I too felt I needed to write. I've have-had plastic in my glass, after chewing a piece of ice I had a pain then some blood which later I learned was plastic that came in my glass through the in door dispenser. I to have a plastic piece about the size of half dollar. Shame on GE for not fixing this problem. Part number WR17X11419

This side by side refrigerator is from 2003 and 2 times now I have had to replace the auger/ice bucket assembly. The 1st time a piece of plastic broke off the auger and got pushed forward into the where it gets dispensed. It literally got wedged in there but ice was still falling. Over time the metal mechanism at the end where the ice falls was creating a groove in the piece that was wedged in. As I went to get ice it would run over that piece and deposit fiberlike pieces of plastic in my drink that the naked eye could barely see. I was coughing for over 2 weeks not knowing what was going on. my wife told me to go to the Dr but I could tell it was not from me being sick.

I finally figured out it was only when I was getting ice out of the fridge that it happend later on. I then proceeded to check the ice bucket and lo and behold there it was wedged in there. I called the company and after complaining that this was a very serious safety issue, they offered to send me a new one. Well this happend again just last week but luckily I caught the problem in time. I called GE about this same problem and again they offered me a new assembly unit. Got it today and it is the exact same one, no difference at all. It is only a matter of time [before] someone is seriously injured and who knows, my stomach may have some issued from this after all.

Serious coughing from small plastic particles being lodged in my lungs.

The other day I found a piece of plastic in the disposer and couldn't figure out where it came from-sharp piece-so I dismissed it until today when I was finishing my soda in ice I almost swallowed a sharp piece of plastic and then I put 2 and 2 together. I checked the ice machine in the refrigerator and emptied the ice and the auger has come apart.

I called GE and they never heard of such a thing happening and wanted to send out a service man but, I would have to pay for the parts. I was then offered the part as a discount so I just ordered myself. Why would they say they never heard of this problem and now I see after coming to this site I am not the only one. I am so glad I didn't swallow this or especially my children. There has to be a better design as now afraid this will happen again.

I started finding Shares of plastic in our ice water that came from our side by side GE refrigerator. The sharp plastic pieces looked very similar to the ice so they blended right in with our ice water. My 5 year old daughter asked me what was in her drink so I looked and saw a large, sharp piece of plastic that easily could have cut her throat and/or choked her.

I emptied my ice bin and found more broken plastic pieces but could not see any obvious place that they may have come from. I called GE and was eventually transferred to a customer care agent. The agent really didn't seem concerned about the plastic and I was upset that she was not concerned about such a potentially serious problem; that made me angry because she didn't seem interested that some innocent person could be killed and especially since this could be happening with other people's ice bins all over the country.

GE did agree to send a tech out at no cost but that I would have to pay for any parts. Give me a break, they almost harmed my daughter and they wanted me to pay to replace a very dangerous, defective part. When I voiced my objections to having to pay for the part, the rep still wouldn't budge so I said maybe I need to get a lawyer and that is when she said she could no longer talk to me and that I would need to speak to their legal department. I then talked her back into having someone come out to look at it.

The repair tech said it must have been the plastic cover that goes over the ice bin because that was missing. He said I really didn't need the cover anyway and that it would be expensive because I would have to replace the entire ice bin. So I took his advice and didn't order a new one.

This incident actually happed in the Spring of '08 but it has always bothered me to think of this happening to someone else. As I have stated, it is especially alarming because the broken plastic looks like part of the ice....

I am not looking for money but I would like GE to be more concerned with such a deadly defect. I am sure if this happened to my family, then it must be happening to others!

I also have large and small pieces of sharp plastic breaking from the ice dispenser. They enter the glass and are invisible due to the fact they blend in with ice.
I have experience with the manufacturing of this type of plastic. I have an idea of what went wrong during the manufacturing. It still does not cure the problem of human injesting shards of indigestable materials.
They do not have the right to sell dangerous appliances.

I retained the evidence.

I need to purchase a new refrigerator? Or, I should risk my life by accidently drinking shards of plastic that my puncture something I would like intact. Ex: esophagus, stomach, large and small intestines, bowel, rectum.

Model No. PSS25MGNA WW Refrigerator, Serial No. MD413912. The clear plastic Auger in the Ice Dispenser breaks releasing clear sharp plastics pieces into drinking glass. You cannot see the plastic because it looks like the ice, until you feel it in your mouth. The auger should have been made of metal. Replaced original under warranty, then the replacement broke recently.

I ordered the Auger for $36.00 on 30 Jan 2009. The third auger dispenses sharp needle like plastic from the injection molding on the auger. There should have been a product recall of this part. When I called a GE representative about this, his only reply was to sell me a another replacement part.

Could cause serious injury if clear plastic were swallowed.

G.E. Hotpoint Refrigerator Ice maker - pieces of plastic are being dispensed along with the ice and so much plastic has been broken off by the revolving arm that the ice now falls right out of the fridge onto the floor and we will have to buy a new ice maker.

One day I was crushing ice from my GE refrigerator freezer for my iced tea. When I drank the tea I almost choked on a piece of plastic that had dispensed from the the GE icemaker. I immediately called GE. A technician came over and he told me I probably had already swallowed some small pieces of plastic. GE offered to replace the plastic ice maker auger and I pay for labor. They would give me the same plastic auger for the icemaker which may break and crush into our drinks again.

I told them I did not want another plastic auger. I want one like in the new model they are now making which are metal. They refused. I have the broken piece of the auger and the icemaker for evidence. I have the copy of the complaint from the tech.

We have owned a GE Side-by-Side Refrigerator Model # GSS22WGMD for about 5 years now. Just recently we noticed white flakes floating at the top of our drinks, and upon further examination noticed that larger pieces of white plastic with jagged edges were embedded in the ice cubes in our glasses. We removed the Ice Bucket from the Freezer and found that the Auger had broken off a substantial amount of the back of the Ice Bucket into the Ice Cubes that were in the Bucket.

The chrome plated auger that pushes the ice to the dispenser is RUSTED, and the ice bin was full of RUST shavings!!! I called GE and asked if they make augers in stainless steel so it will not rust, no one could say yes or no... Talk about cutting costs on the wrong part. Thank god the water pump broke and we ran out of ice and got to see the auger/bin.

Irregular shaped piece of heavy plastic with jagged edges was in the bottom of my drink glass. This piece of plastic came from the ice maker where it broke off of the auger used to push ice to the dispenser.

The piece of plastic was too large to be ingested. However, we frequently use the crushed ice feature of the ice maker and presumably it could grind up a piece of plastic along with the ice.

Our 3-yr-old GE Side by Side Refrigerator (Model #GSS22WGMD , Serial #MD250197) Has had to have the heater coil replaced but worse than that has been spitting out metal and plastic pieces in the crushed and whole ice it makes. I have called GE twice and been told I would be called back but never have heard anything from them.

My husband has swallowed plastic pieces and my 9 yr old daughter actually ended up with a large piece of metal in her mouth.

I purchased a GE refrigerator less than 3 years ago. Now, pieces of plastic are breaking off and falling out of the icemaker bucket, ending up in my glasses of ice water. The model number of the refrigerator is GSS25UFPA CC. The icebucket number is WR17X11419. I wrote to GE and asked that they replace this unit at no cost to me, and they told me to simply call Sears. I did not purchase the refrigerator from Sears, and when I called them, they had no clue as to what was going on. I wrote again to GE and they have not responded.

Refrigerator Model #GSS25JFMC At one year of age the ice compartment broke where the ice is moved by the auger leading to the dispenser. Not knowing it was broken, peices of plastic were dispensed with the ice into drinks. After a while bits of metal shavings were coming out with the ice. (I have saved them) I have contacted GE Customer Service via The Internet Response Team severel times. I have been given the same reply each time, I must pay for a service call to have the refrigerator evaluated.

Damages: Lost use of the ice maker and dispenser. I must now buy bags of ice.

My 8-year-old son was dispensing ice and water from our less than 2 year old side by side refrigerator MD# DSS25PFMC CC Serial # HD236637, when he was drinking the water, he saw a big piece of plastic at the bottom of his cup. The augers GE has are made of plastic, even a rocket scientist can figure out that plastic placed in a freezer will eventually break!! This design is awful, and the Refrigerators should be recalled before someone gets seriously hurt. I too called GE parts, and although my response time was quick, the new auger and drawer was replaced but later happend again, now the ice comes out with no control. I will never by another GE product again!

Damage: Near choking by a broken off piece of plastic coming from the auger and drawer of the GE Side by Side. Poor design, needs to be recalled

Three years ago we purchased a GE side-by-side refrigerator with a water/ice dispenser/crusher in the door. It came with a one-year warranty. Several weeks ago my daughter almost choked on a 1/2 inch piece of plastic in her glass. We are unsure if she ingested any of the smaller pieces. The fact was that the ice crusher had begun eating the ice bucket I see as: (i) faulty design; (ii)use of improper materials; and (iii) a significant safety issue. A GE repairman came to investigate. He called GE Appliances who informed that, althought the warranty had expired, they would give us a free replacement ice bucket but would not pay for the housecall/labor. I tried to explain to customer service that the issue was safety, not simply parts replacement. They did not feel any further action was necessary. I consider GE's lackadaisical attitude regarding safety to equate to gross negligence. Simply replacing the part does not ensure against future ingestion by unsuspecting consumers.
