GE Ice Dispensers Serve Up More Than Ice

Heather of Greensburg, PA September 21, 2009

Purchased the fridge new in 2003. Last year 11/14/2008 noticed the temp in the fridge said 50 degrees and the freezer said -5. Had Sears warranty, after about 3 visits from Sears they replaced the motherboard but realized since it was a universal board, 1 wire needed cut. Well that lasted through yesterday. Yesterday, 9/20/09 I opened the fridge, temp said it was 55 degrees and the freezer reading -8. So since I ended up renewing my warranty.

I called Sears again. However they can not come for 5 days. Kinda hard living without a fridge for 5 days. I have fridge, range, and dishwasher all GE profile. These were not cheap, this fridge is really starting to get on my nerves. Wish GE would get it together an be able to make a part that would last. I can't have this be an annual part replacement. Keeping this thing in warranty year after year is also starting to add up!

I purchased a side by side GE Refridgerator 9/7/29. Today the fridge and freezer stopped working and the digital temperature control screen went blank. Of course GE isn't available to call today so I came online and read all these reviews. I sure am sorry I bought this fridge. I think I'm in for years of torment with everything breaking down. I wish I could just take it back to HD.

Dan of Mechanicsburg, PA September 20, 2009

Same problem as all the others with GE refrigerators. I have had to have the mother board replaced after Ice maker and water stopped working. This is a recurring problem on the fridge and happens about every 2 months which entails removing everything from the freezer and thawing the lines. I am now trying to deal with Freezer/Refrig. not cooling. When I spoke to a repair man, I was told that this is also a common problem and is probably a problem with the defrost mechanism. Repair man told me that there was a defect in original mother board on almost all of my specific type of GE and that replacement usually has issues also. GE repair service is at least a week away due to backlog of repairs!

John of Boiling Springs, PA September 20, 2009

GE recently changed its refridgerator control boards. The last few boards I changed on GE refridgerators caused the units to run improperly. They recently changed the board part number. I believe they put out bad boards, corrected the problem and issued a new part number. I am curious to know if I am the only appliance repairman to believe this to be the case. GE would certainly not admit to this.

I have a GE side by side refrigerator with the ice and water dispenser in the door. I purchased it about 4 or 5 years ago. Whiten 6 months the ice maker stopped working. I contacted Ge and they sent out a repair man to fix it. New auger and bin. A couple of months after that the water dispenser stopped working. A couple more months and the Ice machine broke again! Then the freezer defrost heater went bad!

I have replaced all these parts except the first one because my one year warranty was up, and GE doesn't care about their customers! In all I have replaced the defrost heater twice, the ice auger 4 times, and I'm still without the water dispenser. The line is frozen in the door. If I thaw it out it's frozen again within a day! I told GE I may be able to repair it with a water line heater from one of their other refrigerators and they offered to sell me the part at a discount. The offer is valid for one month. The problem is, I can get that part cheaper from the local supply house!! This lemon is junk!

I have a GE Profile refrigerator that has a water dispenser in the freezer door. The water line that runs through the freezer door insulation freezes up due to the insulation getting wet from condensation over time. I have been to many on-line help sites and have found this to be a common problem with this model. I inquired if GE had a recall (they didn't) or because this is a common problem, could they tell me what the remedy would be. I was told they would not tell me the remedy unless I paid to have a technician come out. I read about another person who paid to have the tech come out just to tell him he had to buy a whole new door for over 900. Who would pay that amount of money just to have the water dispenser work. This is obviously a defect in the design or construction of this refrigerator and GE won't help. Do not buy GE appliances! There is no customer support.

Joanne of Davenport, FL September 16, 2009

We purchased a GE Profile refrigerator 4yrs ago. We have replaced parts on the refrigerator. The temp. in the fridge and freezer flucuate all the time. our freezer is at 5 degrees currently and the fridge at 47 degrees. then the freezer goes to-3 degrees for no apparent reason. This is a health problem. Food spoiled, water all over floor. and NO HELP FROM GE.

I Would like a Refridgerator that actually works. I wish I never bought a GE Appliance. We had to pay for a repair man whose name I have on speed dial on my phone. We have no ice. We have had all the food go bad in the refridgerator and freezer.

susan of loudonville, NY September 14, 2009

I purchased a kitchen full of ge profile appliances for my new home 4 years ago. Within the first 4 months the ice maker broke. At the time I didn't know ge appliance repair existed so I contacted Consolidated appliance repair in Cohoes, NY. They replaced it twice within next few months. Since that time I have called ge appliance repair and have dealt with 3 different repair reps regularly and one is in my kitchen now. It is always something to do with the ice maker.

This last time the valve leaked onto floor and I was out of town and it warped my kitchen wood floor. I took time to meet him last week, needed to order part, it came, he is here and the part they sent is incorrect. No one knows the part number so once again I am here and no solution. Repair person main office is trying to figure it out. Remember, this refrig/freezer is 4 years old

One repair was due to GE realizing they made a mistake with making this ice maker and had to add a part hoping to channel the ice into chute. They attempted to charge me for that mistake. The ice has never been plentiful, however, most of the time it is non existent. So now I have another appointment scheduled for Monday, September 22, however, no oneknows if part will be here because they don't know which part it should be. I need a new refrig/freezer or at least, very least one at cost. This is the worst appliance I have ever dealt with.

Having "battled" with this GE refridgerator for 2 yrs---while--the techs from the supplier-- and having paid the local GE service reps--This refridgerator remains in the junk catagory---I have made attempts to contact you for some help in this matter to no avail---I suppose the only option would be to avoid any of the GE products and---
