GE Ice Dispensers Serve Up More Than Ice

Wendy of San Jose, CA September 5, 2009

I turned my oven to preheat for a baking dish. When it preheated, I opened the oven and my initial thought and reaction was the oven was on fire. But looking closer, I realized the heating element was sparking, uncontrollably. There was obscene amount of smoke, setting of fire alarms, and naturally scaring myself and my younger cousin. She didn't know what was going on, and from what she saw, lots of smoke and blinding sparking, she kept asking me if the oven was going to blow up. I threw baking soda on it, to no avail.

The sparking just kept traveling along the element, and I decided I needed my extinguisher. Well, after several minutes of this, it finally stopped, but broke the element in one, or maybe two places.

A rep from GE responded to my concern, and said that that is what happens when the element comes to the end of it's life. And had mentioned that when this does happen, it only lasts for a few seconds and may smoke a little. Not for me, it went on for minutes and there was enough smoke to set off fire alarms.

I thought it was just my oven, but looking online, I realized this is a common problem and has been a continuous problem for many. GE needs to take responsibility for this. It NEEDS to be on recall.

Five months after purchasing a GE 30" gas stove Model JGBS07DEM4 inner glass door broke while oven was on. Ruined dinner - 2 week inconvenience while new glass ordered and installed.

Catherine of Snellville, GA August 19, 2009

I purchased a double wall oven, Mod# JKP55 in Nov. 2007 and at less than 2 years old the surface around the touch pad area is coming loose, bubbling and wrinkled. It looks terrible and will hinder us in selling our home in the near future. I'd like to see this problem fixed or the touch pad area replace.

My 1-year old daughter was severly burned by Hotpoint Oven door. Oven door was closed and in use and the space between the oven door and back of the oven has too wide gap that an adult can get most of hand inside. She has blistered 4 of her fingers due to this gap. She was able to get her hand between that gap. Now I have to worry everytime I cook that the same will happen again. I will never buy hotpoint ovens or recommend due to this issue. Severe burns on her fingers. Call to emergency after hours hotline and 2 trips to the doctor.

We purchased a GE combination convection oven and microwave (Model # PT970b0M1BB, Serial # MM6135840). The convection oven has never worked right, and after 4 service calls it has still not been repaired. The first time they came out, they said there was nothing wrong. The second time they said it was the temperature sensor and/or the control board, but they didn't have the parts. The 3rd time they replaced the parts, but the oven still wasn't working after the repair. The 4th time they said it was the lower burner, and they didn't have that part either. They told me it would take another week. I called the GE complaint department to have the part sent overnight, but the service technician still won't come back to (allegedly) fix it until next week. Apparently GE doesn't teach ther techs to properly troubleshoot or test their work.

We purchase a stove with convection oven as well grill on the top. November 2008, A month later we contacted Ge for a problem related with the stove, 3 months later other issue-stove. 4 times the technician has come to my home to repair that appliance. Now, the top grill do not work or simple the flam is so small that we cannot even grill a piece of beacon or a egg. the gas go out but the flam do barely or disappear letting the gas out... ( smelling gas)

The technician show up yesterday nothing can be done. Beside all those problems, with have a rust issue, the machine is only 9 months old. All my stainless appliances are fine, except GE stove. Ge customer service told me that is ok to have rust, this is only a cosmetic issue and so they do not feel responsible at all. As for the others issues, I was told that they wont exchange the machine only send a technician over and over.

I feel unsafe and very unhappy with the new stove we have used only 1 month. We cannot resell the machine to anyone that we unlike GE responsible people and would not let someone dealing with gas smelling or others issues. Ge Did offer me a discount of 5% discount for a better machine but will not take this dangerous garbage back.

I am very dissatisfied with GE poor warranty. Miserable quality for high price. If this is the way GE is doing business I will not support this anymore. We are looking for a new stove that will work without to have a technician every month or so. A company who stay behind serious customers. Not a company who is selling poor products with a technician

Sandra of Ch, OK July 30, 2009

I installed my new cooktop Model PP945BM2BB Serial DS700385Q into my newly remodeled kitchen. The cooktop came without a protective film during shipment. The manual said to remove the film before cooking, but none was to be found. The cooktop was installed during March 2009. Around the end of May I noticed a scratch on the surface of the cooktop. At the time, all I had done was put a baking pan of toast on the top of the cooktop.

I contacted the company and they sent out a representative to look at the scratch. He was rude when he visited and told me that since I knew so much I could fix the problem myself. The warranty for said cosmetic repairs was up after 30 days. Mine was approximately 60 days old. But, he called another service representative for the company and she talked with me and said that I had placed an aluminum baking pan on top (which I wasn't supposed to do). This pan is COOKWARE. And probably after I placed the cookware there, it scratched the surface of the cooktop.

After many calls and letters, the company is refusing to repair the glass surface of the cooktop. They are stating that it is my fault and not their fault. I can buy a new glass top at my expense if I desire.

I have a Ge range and hood. The hood broke and needed a new switch. GE no longer makes this switch. Trying to obtain repairs or a replacement hood has proven to be a major chore. There is no way to get a human being through the various numbers provided for consume3r service. Even if I dial a number given me by the repairman (who was the only GE person who was any good, by the way), or tried to return a call to GE left on my answering machine, I get a notification to call a different number. When I finally reached a human being, she said she couldn't help me but would transfer my call to a real live person who could help. The phone rang, and then"your call could not be completed as dialed. Please dial your call again." Since I had no idea what number I had been transferred to, I could not redial. I gave up.

I think I am getting a rebate on my service contract, and I have an appliance dealer coming out to see if what he has will fit in the old hood slot, but I'm not sure if this is the correct situation, since I cannot return GE's call from July 28. The case number is 9888480. I would appreciate hearing from someone at GE who can straighten this out. If you have to leave a message, please leave a workable number and an extension. Since I do not want to replace the range, I'm stuck with getting a GE hood. However, as other appliances wear out, e.g. washer and dryer, dishwasher, there are other companies out there. It's obvious that GE isn't interested in keeping my business.

In no form is the truth being stretched. We were in another room when we hear a huge crash. When we went into the kitched we found where the oven door had exploded, shooting glass to the other side of the kitchen and further more into the utility room. Had someone been standing in front of it, there would have been serious injuries. The oven was purchased on December 31, 2007 and the door busted in July 2009. The oven was only 1 year and 7 months old. The oven had not been on all day long when it shattered. I had used the ceramic cook top for about 15 minutes about 3 hours earlier. It was completly cooled down when it exploded. The glass lay on the floor and popped around like popcorn in a microwave. Pretty scarey!

GE service man came out in a week and looked at it which they (GE) wanted to charge me 79.95 for that. The part was only 50.00 and the labor was 150.00 to install. GE products are only good against manufacturer defects for 1 year. I do not think that the glass on an oven door should shatter like that at all. GE was not very helpful with covering the cost until I got upset and threatened them to go to papers and I still had to pay for the labor to have the glass installed which was 150.00. It was a constant argument with the customer service rep and they forced me each time to ask for their supervisor. I believe this product should be recalled before someone is seriously injured. I will never purchase another GE product because of the way Customer Relations handled this! Furthermore, the GE Serviceman was so embarrased in the way the company handled the case! That should say something!

Morton of Chazy, NY July 18, 2009

GE free standing range Model# JBP35DOK4WW Top surface element arc flashed and melted through element shooting sparks and a bright white flash. Ruined drip pan and burned completely through surface element. Smoke caused by meltdown caused two smoke detectors to alarm. Stainless steel pan was on burner at the time with a medium setting. Had anyone grabbed the pan handle at the time they may have been electrocuted or seriously injured or even blinded by the flying slag.
