GE Ice Dispensers Serve Up More Than Ice

Rachel of Saskatoon SK (04/05/09)
Programmable coffee maker was set to turn on at 5am as we do every day. One morning it didn't work. When we turned it upside down we noticed the plastic on the bottom had melted. We purchased this from walmart in december. We tried to exchange it but with no receipt they would only exchange it for the same product, however they don't seem to carry this one anymore. I am trying to find out if GE did a recall on this coffee maker, need to wait until monday to contact their customer service.

We were lucky that there was no fire or damage to our counter.

I bought a GE coffee maker ...model #168164 back in October. It quit working after a couple of months. I returned it to the store and exchanged it for the exact same kind. I figured I just got a bad apple so I tried another one. I happen to like the design and the features. BUT....low and behold ... the second one stopped working after 3 months. I had already threw away the box and the receipt so I could not return it.

Why is it that everything seems to be so cheap. I remember when the only time I bought a new maker was when I got tired of looking at the old one! Is this how companies are staying in business? They make a product so that it's designed to only last a few months therefore forcing the consumer to purchasing a new product. I did buy a new one but it's definitely NOT a GE!!!

purchased a 12 cup digital GE coffee maker from Wal-Mart in early January. I paid 32 for it and the other morning I got up to have coffee and the coffee maker did not work. I was very disappointed as I thought this was a good coffee maker. There was power to it but when I turned it on it did nothing. I'm 80 yrs old so I had some one take me back to WALMART after calling the 800 number to get a new one. Got home with the new one and the stop drip valve was broke. Called the 877 number and was told go back and get a new pot. Why not just send me the little part in the mail.

COFFEE ALL OVER THE FLOOR

Ron of Sawyer, OK March 1, 2009

I purchased a GE Digital Coffee Pot Model # 169165. We tried it out once, then the next morning we made a pot of coffee and the bottom of the unit started smoking, melting the plastic, and licking flames. The warmer plate had fallen into the bottom of the unit and was melting and burning the plastic bottom of the unit.

Plastic melted all over the counter. Smoked up the house. This is a programmable unit that we purchased on a Saturday and tried out on a Sunday. If we had purchased it on Sunday, this fire could have consumed our house since we would still be in bed when the unit was set to turn on at 3:30 a.m. Just by luck we were in the kitchen on Sunday morning while the coffee brewed and were able to disconnect the unit as it started to flame. This 30 appliance could have cost us our lives, or at the least burned down our house.
