GE Coffee Makers

Consumer Complaints & Reviews

I was pouring a full pot of hot coffee when the handle broke and the hot coffee spilled all over my left hand scalding it. The cause turned out to be a tiny plastic nut that held the screw that fastens the base of the handle to a stainless steel support ring. The tiny black plastic nut was found split into two pieces. The public needs to be informed before this fault causes serious bodily harm to someone.

Coffee pot model # 169209. I am very dissatisfied with this product and I will not keep it in my home any longer. It is dangerous. My daughter bought this coffee pot for Mother's Day a year ago and thank goodness she bought a product replacement plan, because today I'm taking it in and I will replace it with another brand. About 3 months after the purchase the handle fell off of the carafe as I was pouring the coffee into a cup. So I went and bought a replacement pot, thinking it was a fluke, but now today the second pot has done the same thing. I'm thru with GE.

Purchased a GE 12 cup coffee maker model 169209 less than 6 months ago and the plastic on both parts of the top have cracked with several plastic inner tabs breaking also. Makes coffee but it's falling apart. Although, my house is full of GE appliances, I would not buy another GE coffee maker. Back to Mr. Coffee for us!

I purchased a 12 cup digital GE coffeemaker (model number 169209 UPC681131692090), in October of 2010. This coffeemaker makes so much steam while brewing, that it has to be moved away from the cabinets. The hinge that holds the drip head lid broke. The side arched handle edge of the basket that holds the grounds, broke. Coffee grounds go through the basket, and float around in every cup of coffee. I cannot return it to Wal-Mart, because it was a gift, and I do not have a receipt, and the box was already thrown away. I am very dissatisfied.

We recently purchased a Wal-Mart General Electric coffee maker, model 169209. This morning, while pouring a cup of coffee, the carafe's handle separated from the glass portion allowing the glass pot to drop to the counter, and break into a hundred pieces. Scalding hot coffee went all over the counter, and floor. The broken glass was an additional hazard.

We recently purchased a Walmart General Electric coffee maker, model 169228. This morning, while pouring a cup of coffee, the carafe's handle separated from the glass portion, spilling scalding hot coffee all over the counter and my feet. Had this been 1 minute earlier and my 2 school-aged children might have been scalded too as they were seated at the counter eating breakfast.

We purchased a GE Model 169209 12-Cup Digital Coffee Marker on Dec. 30, 2010 at Walmart for $34.00. After using for only 1 week, the light for the on/off switch is flickering, the control panel gets very warm and the "keep warm plate" (which has an option of time and temperature) only is "hot" no matter what setting you have it on. This thing is going back to Walmart. It's dangerous!

In recent years, I've had several different brands of coffee pots. In my opinion, they are simply not made with the quality of the first ones that came out years ago. This GE model 169209 was purchased from Walmart in April 2010.

Last night I filled it with water to pour into the container to be ready to brew in the morning. As I raised it up, it was over the sink when the plastic rim gave way. The caraffe crashed into the sink in many pieces. Had it been hot coffee, and we'd have been carrying it, there could have been very bad burns resulting.

Looking at the pieces, you could see where the plastic just broke, and the screw holding it all together came out. It was not bumped against anything. Just the weight of the 8 cups of cold water did it in after about 8 months of doing the same thing. Be careful if you have this model.

Had electrical problems after purchasing coffee maker. Coffee maker worked fine so didn't connect the problem to it. Fearing electrical fire, I called electric service. He was out four times trying to find source, called Great Lakes energy, they couldn't find anything. After spending $200 for service fees, it was traced to coffee pot. Called ge customer assistance * *** *** **** on handbook. Walmart seemed to know about the problem and told me how sorry they were. I said sorry doesn't pay the service charge to find the fire hazard.

We have had this GE coffee maker for just over a year. About 2 months ago, it started acting weird in that it would stop and beep after just a few minutes of brewing. I would turn the machine off and on again to continue brewing, but the problem became worse until it would only brew for a few seconds before stopping.

I came to this site and saw many reviews posting this same concern. Then I read a review from a gentleman (Eric) from Maine, and he said all he did was to push the lit "clean" button on the top of the display. I filled the pot with a half vinegar/half water solution, poured it into the reservoir in the back, pushed the "clean" button on the top, and it fixed it! It went through the cycle of cleaning (it stopped and started for about a 1/2 hour) and I put the solution through again. It didn't stop once! For anyone having this issue, try this first. It worked for me.

I came upon a recall for the coffee pot from GE that is sold at Walmart stores. I do have one of these model #169164 and have stopped using this today as a result of this. This product has caused damage to my cupboard and I would like to know how to proceed from here to get this replaced.

I purchased a GE 5 cup coffee maker from Wal-Mart. Within two weeks of purchasing the coffee maker the lights went out in our house, the coffee maker would not turn on. We threw it away thinking it was shocked as the power went out. We went back and purchased the exact same coffee maker and again the power just blinked this time during a storm and again it won't turn on.

I purchased a GE Coffee Maker less than a year ago at Wal-Mart. A few months later, it started showing an error code, and then stopped working. We returned it to the store and exchanged it for another. Yesterday, that one stopped working for no reason.

We threw it away and purchased a Mr. Coffee at another store. We had to spend money on a new coffee maker twice within one year and I find it unreasonable.

Heard about the recall on the Ge Coffee Maker I had purchased at Walmart. Took the coffee maker back to the store. Ad stated that I would receive a full refund, but only received $29.48. I had paid $39.95 plus tax for the coffee maker.

GE coffee maker model #169164. We purchased it about 6 months ago at our local Wal-Mart store. The clock on this machine never did work right--lost 4-5 minutes/day, which meant resetting the clock each night before setting the auto-brew function. About two weeks ago we realized that the warmer plate was staying very hot, even after we turned the machine off. It would also start brewing as soon as we started pouring water in, even though the machine had not yet been turned on. Had to unplug the machine to get it to turn off & cool down.

Believed it was out of warranty, so we simply puchased a new machine (Black & Decker) and threw the GE one away. Can't locate my receipt, although I do still have the manual for the GE machine. I plan on heading to Wal-Mart this weekend to see if they will give us a refund without the machine or receipt. Will NEVER purchase another GE appliance--they are more expensive and simply do not perform.

I purchased a GE coffeemaker (model 169209) in December of 2009. After 2 weeks of owning it we kept receiving an ER5 message on the screen. Since we purchased it at Wal-Mart and had the receipt I took it back and exchanged it for the same model. It only took a month this time to stop working and give us the ER5 message.

I looked at the GE website for tips on how to fix the issue and tried everything that was suggested. I then again took it back to Wal-Mart and exchanged it for the same model. I truly thought we just happened to get 2 coffeemakers that might have been defective. Disappointingly after 2 1/2 months the coffee maker did it again. I again went on the website looking for a solution.

All I found there were a lot of other complaints similar to mine. I feel that GE owes it to its customers to recall this item and refund any monies for this product. I would take the coffeemaker back but I no longer have the receipt or the box. I'm out $40 and have been inconvenienced 3 times now by their defective coffeemaker.

I also bought this GE 12c Coffee Maker. I believe it says model #169164 on the bottom, from Wal-Mart for $39.95, only 5 months ago. Like many of the reported, the coffee maker started having issues about a month ago by brewing different levels of coffee or brewing the whole pot and turning off after different, shorter amounts of time, giving me Error Codes of "Err 3" or "Err 5". Even though, it was set to keep warm for the max time of 2 hrs.

Finally, I was frustrated enough to do something about it. I decided to do a search for the owner's manual online (as I threw mine away along with the box and the receipt, as I see I'm not the only one). I ended up not being able to find the owner's manual online, to see if it listed the Error Codes and what they mean. I did however find this website and as I read the comments, finding how common the problems are with my CM, yet still no resolution to the problem.

I still don't know how it shuts off before done brewing, showing error codes and shutting off before its set time. Normally only by $15 Coffee Makers but thought that even though the $15 ones work well and last a long time. I'm going to splurge a little and spend almost 3 times much money on one that I thought would last me a lifetime, which is why I didn't save the box or the receipt.

So now being totally frustrated, I stood in front of the Coffee Maker thinking of just what the problem could be or since the warranty is out the window because of the receipt (even thought it says Wal-Mart molded into the plastic on the bottom of the CM), thinking how I might be able to override the controls and make it work. Then, while staring the Coffee Maker down, I noticed the Self Cleaning Button was lit up (which it does after every 30 brews). I thought how that would possibly make it so the CF didn't work. I filled it with just water (you're supposed to fill it 50/50 water and white vinegar and remove the charcoal water filter) and I held the cleaning button for about 3 seconds. It went through the cleaning cycle, which took about 30 min.

I normally brew 2 pots of coffee a day and every day would get an Error Code. It's been a week now since I did the "self cleaning" and I have not gotten one error message yet. I can't believe it. Problem solved! I hope that this site will publish this so it may help save some people from throwing a perfectly good coffee maker away. This won't fix all the problems listed for this coffee maker but it definitely is worth a try for similar issues. It worked for me.

And to the person that has a problem drinking a pot of coffee in the 2 hrs that the auto off limits us too. I totally agree with you. It takes me more than two hours to drink one cup of coffee and I'm sick of going back to the coffee maker only to find that it's cold. Other than begging the manufacturers to offer that feature as an option, I don't know what else to do. How I deal with it now is by every time I get a cup of coffee, I hit the power button twice to shut it off and turn it back on, resetting the timer on it. I agree with you and have researched at length on how to short that feature out but came up empty handed.

I fear that many people with the same issues may resort to throwing a perfectly good machine in a landfill and this information that I provided could be a remedy to others economic hardship, not to mention environment damage by having these units end up in a landfill because of bad business on Wal-Mart's and GE's part for not honoring a recall, returns, or having some sort of tech support on the issue either through their website or phone numbers.

I purchased this coffee maker at our local Wal-Mart, just 4 months ago. I woke up to make coffee this morning, and it already won't brew. I put the water in. and the thing just keeps beeping at me, and the water won't go through. I took it apart and cleaned it, messed with the buttons, and nothing! I was so aggravated because I just purchased this coffee maker 4 months ago, and I no longer have the box or receipt, only to find out that so many people have the same problem with this pot. What a disappointment, GE. I had a Krupps before this one, and it lasted me 7 years. I will invest in a better quality coffee maker this time, I end up saving, in the long run, time, money, and aggravation.

I was washing a GE 5-cup digital coffee carafe, model number ****. This morning, it broke and cut my thumb and top of hand. The glass is very thin and it broke around the top of the metal band holding the handle to the carafe. It broke with my hand inside the carafe washing it with gentle pressure. My husband and I had previously commented on how thin the glass was and that the coffee would spill from the pot when pouring. I consider this carafe to be dangerous and will not replace it with the same model.

My fiance thought he'd be nice and buy me a more expensive coffee maker, than the $15 ones we usually buy, thinking it would last me longer. Since on some days, I make a couple pots of coffee. Well, like most of the other complaints about this product I've read, we're having problems with the coffee maker not putting out what we put in it. It only wants to put out about half of the water I put in it. I have to turn the coffee maker off and then right back on again, to get it to put out all of the water. Another complaint I have with it, is it shuts itself off after a couple hours of being on, and it takes me longer than just a couple hours to drink a pot of coffee.

I bought a GE (Model: 169164) 12-cup digital coffee maker about one year ago at Walmart. I had no problems with the coffeemaker at all until this morning. Today's my day off so I got up late, put some coffee on and started making pancakes. The coffee was ready; it had one cup of coffee, my pancakes were done and I was ready for another cup of coffee. When I went to grab the coffee pot, it exploded on my hand and the coffee went all over the counter, floor, my clothes--and I got burned. I took pictures of everything. On top of that, I was so scared and it was horrible. The bottom of the pot exploded and it sounded like a bomb. What can I do?

GE Coffee Maker model 169164. Same problem as most other people are having (according to the complain postings) with this appliance. Coffee maker plugged in, urn filled, coffee ready, lights on, brew button pushed.....nothing. Tried again, nothing. Tried again, error message. I'm heading to Dunkin Donuts then to Walmart without original box or packaging. See what happens.

The coffee maker stops brewing after 2 cups and I have to repeatedly turn the machine off and on in order to get it to brew a full pot of coffee. This process takes a good hour and is very frustrating. I would like compensation for this purchase other than an exchange for the same coffee maker. I have read many similar complaints on this product and want a better machine. Take this off the market already. It takes a good hour to get a fully brewed pot of coffee if I press on/off over and over again. I have spent several mornings trying to get a cup of coffee before I need to leave and then just go through McDonald's for my coffee. I am frustrated. I have only owned this machine for a few months. I deserve compensation for the inconvenience it has caused. I want a new top of the line GE coffee maker. Thank you.

On December 21, 2009 I decided to wash all of my coffee maker GE model 169165 before I went to use it. I picked it up and on the underside noticed a burn hole with a coil on the bottom most part of the coffee maker. I have not had this coffee maker for even a year and have no idea when this happened.

I called the phone number on the bottom of the coffee maker by the model number and they told me to take it back to walmart for an even exchange! There is no known recall at this point in time.

My husband bought me a GE coffee maker last year for Christmas. Three months after the purchase, the glass cracked with 4 cups of coffee still in it. My husband returned it for a new one. Approximately 2 months after purchase, the glass cracked 10mins after the brew cycle with 6 cups of coffee in it. My husband exchanged it yet again.

The next morning I realized that the clock was losing time and that the pot would leak if it was set up the night before use. I was just thankful to keep the glass from cracking (by turning it off immediately after the cycle). I have kept the piece of junk, but now it is an even bigger pain. This week it has decided that it doesnt want to brew more than 2 cups at a time. To get a full pot, I have to turn it off and on every two cups (when it signals that it is done).

We have wasted a lot of time and gas returning the pots. I wasted my time cleaning up after it drained several cups of water on my counter and floor. I have to get up for work earlier so I have time to stand over the pot and get it to finish the cycle and make sure it is off so the glass doesnt crack again. I am just thankful that the glass did not break worse than it did. Someone could have been severly burnt. My mother-in-law bought a pot at the dollar store several years ago and has had NO problems with it. She has even left it on empty and the glass did not crack.

I have a 12 Cup G. E. Perkculator. Model# 106856P or R. I need a cord. I have talked to Wal Mart, Customer Assistance Number. And no one can help me. G. E. Customer Asistance for G.E said to buy a new pot. I paid almost $40 for this pot, and it is just a little over a year old. I think this one of a note.

I purchased the General Elecric coffee maker model #169164.Without a doubt, this has been the most unfortunate purchase of a kitchen appliance in my life. After the first couple of uses I found the overall design terribly inconvenient to use and the unit to be poorly constructed.Within 2 or 3 months stress cracks began to appear around the lid of the coffee hopper. Now, no matter what I do, the machine always fails to brew the last 3 or four cups of jo.The macine must be turned off, reset and allowed to cycle again to get the remaining water out of the urn. Also, all these "bells and wistles" features are just superflous and of no practical use. After all,it's 5am and all I neeed is just a CUP OF COFFEE!!!The last coffee maker I purchased before this POS was a Braun.I bought it in 1989.It had one button. It brewed the perfect cup of coffee and functioned perfectly till the day I dropped the pot 6 months ago. This General electric pot didnt make it 2 months.Complete junk.

The GE Coffee Machine Model #169164 sold by walmarts worked well for about 3 months, then shortly after that period the lights on the unit started to flicker and dim out and then the clean light came on so I reset that, then about the 6th month of use it died, the heating element didn't work and it wouldn't brew anymore coffee. I don't have a reciept or a box for it anymore so I can't take it back to walmarts for an exchange but I will never buy a GE Coffee Machine ever again because of their problems, it makes me think twice on buying any GE product ever again period.

I have been using a digital GE coffee maker(apparently the same model i just read several complaints about!) for about 8 mos -then twodays ago the power would not go on,nothing brewed, and i just kept getting "err" messages. I thought it odd for it to go after less than a year(esp . when my old cheap $15 one lasted nearly 5!)So,since i cannot get through the a.m. w/o my coffee,my husband nicely went out and bought the same one again( since it did work great until that point) -to my dismass we opened up,set it up,and brand new out of the box! it didnt work. The power didnt light up,and when i set the auto timer, half the button lit up! lol - and it didnt work either on top of it. so today we are returning it box and all and getting a different brand this time - most likely a cheap $15 one! non-digital.

I purchased a digital GE coffee maker, #169-164, from K-Mart in March 2009. I have only and I repeat only used the coffee maker 5 times since my March purchase to no longer have a coffee maker due to an internal malfunction.

One afternoon I had a taste for coffee and decided to brew a couple of cups and to my dismay nothing brewed. I read the manual to make sure while I slept I didn't forget how to work the machine, but that wasn't the case. I unplugged the machine (several times). Nothing seemed to turn the coffee maker on. Then upon my last attempt, I received an ERR across the display panel. I re-read my manual to see how to handle that. I unplugged the coffee maker again and still an ERR message, but only this time the message came on every time I hit ANY button. Needless to say , the pot is sitting in my kitchen collecting dust waiting to be replaced with a brand other than GE!

I could not be more disappointed in this brand. I could see if I had used the coffee maker for several years and daily, but we are talking about 5 times that it was used and it was very spread out through the course of the months. After reading all of the complaints on this coffee maker, I only wish I had done my research prior to purchasing, but who ever thinks to research their coffee maker? I will next time!

I bought a GE coffeemaker model 169164 aprox 2 months ago at Wal Mart, about 3 weeks ago the clean light came on and no matter what I did it would not go off. This morning after being set to go off automatically the night before, I woke up to the power button being on but no coffee. I pushed the power button off and then I pushed it again. The light came on, and I thought Ok I am going to get my coffee but No, it was not to be.

It just beeped at me like it used to do when it had finished making coffee I unplugged it and reset the clock and tried starting the coffee maker again but NO it just was teasing me as it again beeped. I took the coffeemaker to my local Wal Mart and attempted to exchange it but they did not have one and the lady at the service desk mentioned they she didn't think that they were carrying that model anymore. I can understand why they won't after reading all the problems that they are having with this model.

I do not have the receipt and will only be allowed to exchange it for the same item, IF I can find one and DO I want one that may cause harm to my home and/or family. I am sure that Wal Mart is aware of the problems of this GE Coffemaker (which also happend to have their name on the bottom of it)and they should issue a store credit so that the consumer can get another brand of coffeemaker and not some timebomb that is ticking to go off without warning.

We purchased a GE Coffee Maker model #169164 from Walmart on March 18th 2009 and it has already stopped working on April 26th 2009! I did a bunch of research online and found many, many people with the same exact problem.
I went to make a pot of coffee yesterday morning and it did not brew. It had power and did its little "click" when you pressed the brew button but nothing else happened. As with many other people I noticed that the clean light was on, but if you pressed it to go into clean mode nothing happened there either.

I unfortunatley don't have the box or receipt for this coffeemaker so we're just out. It's very dissapointing that so many people are having the same problem with this same model and all are breaking in about the same time frame, within a couple months or less. Didn't GE do a test run on this model BEFORE putting it on the market? Shouldn't Walmart take this junk off the shelves?

I will be going to buy a new coffee maker and it will certainly NOT be a GE product. In fact I will be thinking long and hard about buying any GE product anymore, they are obviously not concerned with quality control. the only economic damage is the 30 some dollars it cost. It's not about the money, it's the point of it all.

As others have mentioned, our issue is with the GE digital Coffee Maker purchased at Walmart. Our grandson gave us this coffee pot for Valentine's Day because his "Nana and PopPop always drink coffee and don't eat very much candy." Worked great for 8 weeks. Then, the next morning, nothing. The heating element didn't work therefore the water would not heat up to move through the system. I returned it to the store on Wednesday, April 22nd. Without the receipt, Walmart would only exchange item for item.

Thinking it was just a fluke of mass production, I agreed to take replacement of the same item. On Wednesday evening, I programmed the coffee pot to start in the morning as I do each day. At 2:30 am our smoke detectors started blaring...the source was the coffee pot. Despite having everything turned off, the heating plate never shut off! Okay, back to Walmart on Thursday.

Have to exchange item for item again! I was too exhausted to try anything on Friday, so on Saturday I opened the new GE coffee pot...it made half a pot of coffee and then completely stopped. No lights, no digital signals, 18:88 appeared on the clock even after repeatedly connecting and disconnecting the power cord. Back to Walmart...third coffee pot returned in 4 days. I finally managed to get them to give me store credit instead of a replacement product.

Obviously, there is a manufacturing defect since I've read volumes of similar experiences in product complaint forums online.

Purchased GE digital coffee maker, model #169-164 from Walmart. Unit leaked water all over the counter, every time it was filled up to brew. I exchanged it for another one. Walmart was great. The second unit did not leak, and worked for 2 months, and then just stopped. I already threw away box and receipt. I am extremely disappointed in this poor qiuality from GE. I always trusted and supported their products. Proof enough (and a bit frightening) is, that I just replaced all my household major appliances...with GE's!

Programmable coffee maker was set to turn on at 5am as we do every day. One morning it didn't work. When we turned it upside down we noticed the plastic on the bottom had melted. We purchased this from walmart in december. We tried to exchange it but with no receipt they would only exchange it for the same product, however they don't seem to carry this one anymore. I am trying to find out if GE did a recall on this coffee maker, need to wait until monday to contact their customer service.

We were lucky that there was no fire or damage to our counter.

I bought a GE coffee maker ...model #168164 back in October. It quit working after a couple of months. I returned it to the store and exchanged it for the exact same kind. I figured I just got a bad apple so I tried another one. I happen to like the design and the features. BUT....low and behold ... the second one stopped working after 3 months. I had already threw away the box and the receipt so I could not return it.

Why is it that everything seems to be so cheap. I remember when the only time I bought a new maker was when I got tired of looking at the old one! Is this how companies are staying in business? They make a product so that it's designed to only last a few months therefore forcing the consumer to purchasing a new product. I did buy a new one but it's definitely NOT a GE!!!

purchased a 12 cup digital GE coffee maker from Wal-Mart in early January. I paid $32 for it and the other morning I got up to have coffee and the coffee maker did not work. I was very disappointed as I thought this was a good coffee maker. There was power to it but when I turned it on it did nothing. I'm 80 yrs old so I had some one take me back to WALMART after calling the 800 number to get a new one. Got home with the new one and the stop drip valve was broke. Called the 877 number and was told go back and get a new pot. Why not just send me the little part in the mail.

COFFEE ALL OVER THE FLOOR

I purchased a GE Digital Coffee Pot Model # 169165. We tried it out once, then the next morning we made a pot of coffee and the bottom of the unit started smoking, melting the plastic, and licking flames. The warmer plate had fallen into the bottom of the unit and was melting and burning the plastic bottom of the unit.

Plastic melted all over the counter. Smoked up the house. This is a programmable unit that we purchased on a Saturday and tried out on a Sunday. If we had purchased it on Sunday, this fire could have consumed our house since we would still be in bed when the unit was set to turn on at 3:30 a.m. Just by luck we were in the kitchen on Sunday morning while the coffee brewed and were able to disconnect the unit as it started to flame. This $30 appliance could have cost us our lives, or at the least burned down our house.
