Consumer Complaints & Reviews

I came in after a Canon eos t2i, and got convinced to buy a t3 as it was better and cheaper, then paid more than $300 more for it than I could get it for from elsewhere. I was refused a refund or exchange after I found out, which was 10 minutes after the purchase! Do not even go into this store. They are all terrible people.

While visiting New York, I stepped into Broadway Computer & Video to look at the sale they said they were having. The store is going out of business, so everything must go. I had been needing an external flash for my camera, so I decided to look at the flashes they had on sale. Because I had been looking for a flash, I knew the cost of the Canon models, and the flashes he showed me reflected the prices I had seen while making comparison shopping. Even with the price slash though, the cost was still out of my budget so Chris (the sales man) offered to show me a compatible model.

The Bower looked and felt similar to the Canon flash, and the price seemed reasonable in comparison. When I tested the flash on my camera, it operated well and tested similarly to the Canon flashes I had tried. I was satisfied with the recycle time but, at $380, it was still a little pricey. Perhaps, I was naive in not making a comparison shopping on the Bower, but since the Canon models showed a price comparable to other stores and dealers, I assumed that they would be fair in pricing their other items as well. Chris "dropped" the cost of the lens down to $200, which I thought was a good deal at the time.

He had also been showing me filters for my camera lens. Again, I had seen other filters made of cheaper material for over $20 in some stores. So when he showed me the Bower Professional lens filters, I thought that they looked to be of good quality. I tested them on my camera and was more than satisfied with the results. However, the price on the sticker had me saying, "No thank you." Chris kept saying that the store was going out of business and that they just had to get rid of everything, so he'd give me a good deal.

By the end of my time there, I thought that I was walking away with a good "close-out" deal: $260 ($283 with tax) for a camera flash and two lens filters. When I looked up my purchases online though, I quickly realized that I did not get a good deal at all. How can a store mark up items so high? At Broadway Computer & Video, they sell the Bower SFD926C flash for $380! Online, at most, I've seen it priced at was $190; on Amazon.com, $50. I paid $200, after thinking that the price had been dropped because of their close-out sale! And the two lens filters -- both Bower Digital Mulit-Coated Professional DHD (one PL and the other UV) -- were rip-off too! The PL lens had a sticker of $129.99; the UV lens cost $79.99. With the "sale" price, I thought that I was getting a good deal at $35 and $25, respectively. Online, the two are offered in a set with a third filter and case for less than $40 retail. Most places, including Amazon, sell it at a discounted price for less than $20 in total.

Again, I was naive to believe that we still had honest people out there. That much is my fault. But upon seeing comparable price tags on name brand items that I was familiar with (i.e. the Canon products, Apple products), I had assumed that they would have fair prices on their other items as well. It is sad to think that people are able to get away with stealing from you in such a way yet do so legally and without consequence or even just a guilty conscience.

On another note, after hearing about how I was swindled by Broadway Computer & Video, I was told (and have read in quite a few reviews now) that they have been "going out of business" for quite some time now and are having their infamous close-out sale. Is this not false advertising? When are these thieves finally going to go out of business for real and stop stealing money from the rest of us?

Buyers, beware of Broadway Computer & Video. You will not get a good deal on your purchases, no matter how much they say they will drop it down for you. So, if you happen to be in the area, stay away from this store!

On 04/09/11, I came to buy a tripod. I decided to take the Vanguard 288. The price was $300, and he said that it was $450 few days ago. Then he (Bob) asked me if I need anything else and I said that I need a wide angle lens for my 7D, but it is not a on my budget. He brought me a Sigma 10-20mm and said the price was $1200, but he will consider a reduction. Then he added a filter and a soft lens hood and made it all for $1100.

The deal seems like a good bargain according to the 'visual' reduction, but the prices of all items were very high at the first place. As additional to a nonrefundable policy, we get a loose situation, and if you are a tourist, don't go into this trap. I paid $1,200 instead of $750.

I purchased a Targus SD card reader. He told me it costs $40, but I discovered when I got home to the UK that he charged my card $76. The card reader can be purchased from Amazon for $10. I would like to know what redress I have. In the UK, we have Trading Standards who would have put crooks like these through the courts.

I went in the shop to buy a digital camera. The sales man, may be his name is Charly (not sure) approached me and asked how he would help me, and when knew my request, he brought me a cannon camera that was for $699. I told him that this is expensive for me but he told me that he will reduce $100 for me. I also asked for a bag that he sold me for $100 and he mentioned that he discounted that for me but I don't remember the amount. After I bought the camera, he asked me if I needed a memory card and I asked how how much was it, he answered that it is more than $100 but he will give me a discount.

I said no, because this exceeds my sister's budget and no need for it but he told me that the camera won't work without the memory card. I was surprised that he didn't tell me that before I purchased the camera. I called my sister who told me that go ahead and buy assuming that I am in safe hands and he is a good man who made me so many discounts since I stepped in (I was a fool).

Two days ago, I was talking to a friend who was surprised that a digital camera would cost this much, so he Googled that for me and found out that the camera's cost in the market is $239 which really ** me off because I felt that I was ripped off in the daylight and paid double price.

I took the camera the second day and went to the store in good faith. When I talked to the sales person, the first response was him asking me why didn't I consult my friend before I bought the camera. I was shocked and told him that this is not the question I was expecting but I wanted him to ask me as a customer how to be satisfied.

Then he said that he cannot do anything about it because it is my property now and that they pay a huge amount as rent for the shop and that is why their prices have to be high and that their customers approach them for convenience only.

One comment that amazed me that he told me, "Ma'am, how come you complain about $350 dollars and you are staying in a 5 stars hotel that costs $500 dollars at night". He told me in the mouth that he is sorry that I feel this way but he cannot do any thing about. I was ripped off in the day light by a very rude and unprofessional manner displayed by their staff. I will tell everybody in the world that they are thieves. Now, I will have to pay the $350 because I cannot dare to tell my sister that I have made her pay double price for a digital camera that costs only $239 without the memory card. Right after I left the shop, I was so upset and my heart was beating so bad. I couldn't sleep that night and every time I remember it, I feel so stupid and betrayed.

Among a lot of attractions in New York, I must class Broadway Computers and Video Store. Direct here on Broadway, you can discover how naive you are. I thought that my life experiences are sufficient to prevent bogus practices in commerce.

But I had visited several days ago Broadway Computer and Video Store. The shop, well alight, has clever sellers who sold me a camera Sanyo Xanti as a super new model in price three times more than that in Europe. Of course, it has a nice discount. But I made mistake. If only I have read before articles of cozened visitors from all the world... So it is also New York, New York.

This summer, I visited the USA from Norway. When I was in New York, my camera stopped working. The camera was only two years old. I had just recharged the battery. I went in this shop on Broadway, and this employee, Ron, tried to put in another battery, but the camera still didn't work. He told me the camera was broken.

Then he offered me a new camera, a Panasonic DMC-FH20 to the price of $800. He would give me a $200 off, and when I said no, he offered me another $200 off, in exchange of my old camera. I said no, and then he offered me the camera for the price of $400, and I was to keep my old camera. I took the offer, which turned out to be foolish of me.

Back at the hotel, I recharged the battery for the old camera once more, and it worked! Okay, I then had a camera to give to my daughter. The battery in the new camera must have been used, a charge would only last one day! But by the time I discovered this, I had traveled to Seattle. The memory in the camera was filled with pictures, so it had been used!

Back home, I looked up this camera on different internet sites, and the highest price is $200!

During a visit to New York City I bought a Garmin Nuvi 205W, GPS to help our drive home. It worked great till the Canadian border because it did not have Canadian maps loaded in this thing. I spoke extensively with the salesman, Benny who fully understood that we were Canadians. I clearly should have bought this in Canada. I paid 200 dollars to buy the thing, 20 dollars to return it to them and they refused to help me further and sent it back. I have to order the Canadian Maps from Garmin and install them into this gadget so in the end, I will have paid twice the price for this GPS. My advice to you; Stay clear of downtown Rip off shops like Broadway Computer & Video in Times Square...

My daughter was at an audition for college on Jan 30, 2010 and I had 10 minutes to find a CD player so I ran to 50th and asked them if they had one. I got a Coby CD241 retail value $19.99. They were so nice they put batteries in it for me. I gave them my card and signed the bill. Fine print and off I went. Needless to say, they charged my credit card $247.10. When I called back and said, "You mistakenly added a 0 to the card." They said, "No, we didn't! You were in a hurry and we can charge whatever we want." I said, "How can you charge me $247 for something that cost 20.00?" He said, "We did and we can," and he hung up on me! After reading several complaints like mine, I filed a report with NY Consumer Complaints! This company should not be in business. I am really mad!

I purchased Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS42 12/5/2009 for 399.99. I was told that it was a 799.95 camera on sale that day only for 399.99. I was taking my daughters to New York on a day trip and wanted photo's of our special day together but forgot my camera. So I trusted Tito at this store and purchased the camera. I was with great grief later that day we were in Macy's and I saw the exact same camera for 99.99. It is now with tremendous sorrow that I ever stepped in that store and every time I take photo's with this camera I will be reminded of how I was scammed on this camera.

Dear Sirs, I had visited the shop BROADWAY COMPUTER & VIDEO NEW YORK, NY 10019 recently at New York
Times Square. I had purchased a Sanyo VPC-CG10BK Digital Video and 10 Mega Pixel Dual Camera/Camcorder, on 29th August
2009, at the price of $899.99. I was shocked when I returned home in Abu Dhabi UAE and checked on the internet, at Sanyos own web page and
also many other different sites, that the actual price for this item was only $189 to $200, even though the salesperson, Eddie,

had assured us he was giving us the best price he could offer.

The fact that Sanyo's own web page had shown such a difference
is clearly an indication that this is not because online sites show cheaper prices. Please advise us on why you have such a large

difference in price (over 4 times) for the same camera. We assume that this is an error, which they will rectify by reimbursing us the difference in price, of approx. $710.

I has also bought a ICD -UX81 Sony Voice recorder at the same time from this shop that
sold it to us at $299.When we returned home here in Abu Dhabi I checked the Sony Website priced it at Approx. $150. This too
was very disturbing to me. We could provide the invoice dated 29th August 2009, along with a few of the webpages

we had found.

This has been my first experience of a visit to New York, with my family and I must express my dismay that this
experience of being overcharged so exhorbitantly leaves us all disappointed and sad about the otherwise deep respect and
admiration with which we embarked on visiting and seeing the many sights like the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island etc.,
experiencing the aura of a great city like New York. PS: We sent the shop this complaint and talked to
the Salesman Eddie who attended to us. He has not replied on this complaint to us although he promised to check with his

Boss.

Went in looking for a camera was conned into buying a canon sx200 which was sold no tax and great deal. throw in case and memory stick. then they tried to charge my card twice. visa even called me to check on the transaction 5 min later. I get home to see the scammers sold me a 800.00 camera that is worth 349.00 elsewhere and they have no returns policy. no one would answer to me re this

On the 15th October I purchased a 2GB Card for my camera, which I was charged $149.98 Plus Tax - total cost of 169.33. At the time I did not realise the cost as I was in a hurry, and just wanted a card for my camera, so paid on the credit card and off I went. It was not till I look at the receipt and realised the astronimcal price that I paid did I realise that I had been conned! On my return from the UK I priced this item which on the HP website (which was the make of the product) it retailed at just $9.99p. As you can immagine I was les than impressed

I subsequently contacted the Store 3 Times via fax (which I have confirmation of receipt ) asking for an explaination and requesting a credit to my credit card. My requests and infact any contact have been ignored. The US as the UK rely on Tourists for a substantial amount of the income and if retailers are intent on conning such tourists - then the industry will not grow and it will only give a bad name for retailers such as this. I require my money back and now interest that has accrued on my credit card as a result of this transaction and feel that the Store should be made aware by someone in authority that this action is not appropriate for retailers in the US and the wealth of New York City.

My complaint is small potatoes (compared to others I have seen since). Since my experience I have checked other sources for complaints about this store and find that that they are rampant. My wife and I were in New York City as visitors to see a couple of Broadway Plays. It was shortly after Christmas and my wife wanted to buy me a pair of binoculars as I had hinted this was what I really wanted that Christmas. Anyway, we went to this store and received all kinds of pressure to buy cameras, lens, filters etc. from the salesman, Marty Harris.

My wife had a digital cameral with her and this led to all kinds of pressure to buy stuff we were not in the store to look at or purchase. Thankfully, my wife had the good sense to resist all kinds of "great deals" promises etc. We he finally realized we were not going to buy any of this kind of stuff, he focused on the binoculars. He had a great pair that were the latest on the market and he would sale at a great price. After alot of fast talk, we made the mistake of buying a pair of 20x50 Bushnell for the "unheard" of price of $325.00. After getting home and looking through the binoculars and comparing them to others I realized the binoculars were cheap and no where near the value I had thought. I checked the price of the same model of binoculars on several websites and found that they could easily be purchased for $55 - $65.00 depending on the site. I was shocked that my wife and I were lied to with not a bit of hesitation.

Anyway we contacted our credit card company to get the charges stopped. I filled out a form describing the reason we wanted the charges stopped and submitted it to the credit card company. I also sent the binoculars back to the store with delivery confirmation. I assumed the charges would be stopped and we would not be charged the fraudulent price, but the credit card company has placed it on our current bill and stated it is a valid charge. So, I am paying $325.00 for a $55.00 pair of binoculars and don't even have the cheap things. I could go on and on about this, but it is so frustrating and maddening that I will not write anymore.

My name is Claudia, and I am a concierge at the Parker Meridien Hotel.

I am writing on behalf a guest, Emilian who is currently staying in our hotel. Mr. R purchased some electronic items at Broadway Computer and Video 1623 Broadway in midtown Manhattan on August 7th. After reviewing the purchased items it has become blatantly clear that this store has engaged in gross gouging. The total itemized bill came to over $1900 and when compared with a reputable electronics store said items would have cost not even HALF of that amount. One of the items was actually packed in a fabricated box, non sealed and no brand name identified.
