I  purchased my first Oreck vac in 1999 and still have the original machine. I don't use it as a shop vac but as a vacuum cleaner. I don't pick up toys or screws or left over dinner and it has NEVER let me down. I also own the Orbiter and 4 Air Purifiers. If you follow the directions and take care of these machines the way that they are suppose to be taken care of, you will be very pleased. I think it's funny that there are people that think that you never have to do anything to maintain a machine and yet when it breaks, somehow it's the machines fault.

I also got 2 of their table top Elite Signature Series air purifiers and they are indeed a waste of money. The motors jam up with dust and this increases motor strain and uses a lot more electricity because the motor doesn't spin freely. I found this out by taking one of them apart before I threw it in the garbage.

Now the second one will only run on the NOISY high speed because of the same reasons above. I smoke so the ozone feature did remove the smoke and its odor. The plates get coated with the tar residue and I've found that I can wash them in the dishwasher (top rack) and it's the only real way to get the gook off. I think it does work for cigarette smoke because non-smoking daughters commented on the lack of odor when visiting.

However due to the motor problems I don't recommend anyone buy this product. Better design could keep the dust out of the motor area and the use of real ball bearings instead of the crap they use would at least allow bearing replacement instead of the whole motor.

As far at the stick cordless vacuum given as a free gift, I am happy with it. Battery is over 3 years old and still keeps a charge. The battery is available on many online sites is is a standard gel-cell 6 v. battery used in many other devices. My battery contacts are not solderered on like some said theirs were. It would be useless on carpeted floors though and wasn't designed for that.

[They] need to sell the wire that comes in Truman Cell. It's definitely a defective and faulty area in entire design. No one should have to pay someone to replace the wires or have to pay for an entire insert after paying so much for one of [their]systems. Some of us know how to fix things and if our system isn't under warranty we need to be able to do that instead of trying to get use to the constant clicking, snapping, and cracking from a broken, bent, or loose wire damaged by...the flow of water? Personally I soaked mine so I don't understand why mine would have become loose. It's ridiculous!

The fact that dust collects around the entire motor area and up the wall that it blows upon make me wonder if system is doing much more than using electric. [Their] commercials are faulty in representing the truth. I will say [the] system does catch smoke, but it's not so easy to clean as shown on commercial and it sure does not catch the dust that blows through it or else it wouldn't be on the wall above it where [the] machine blew it after it entered and exited system.

As a result I have two XL's sitting here unplugged. My friend was happy to give me hers trying to help me fix simply because she was so tired of hers. Oreck's cost is too high on all their products. My sister has to sweep prior using her Oreck Upright. It's either due to the cost of the bags or it's issues dealing with the warranty, I don't know. My advice for an air filter is to buy something cheaper. Yeah, you'll have to keep water in it, make sure you place it in a safe place, clean it out, and you might have to buy two or three of them for different rooms, but it will still be cheaper than one Oreck XL. I'm not rich, but Oreak is with their advertising.

I purchased the Oreck Professional Air Purifier and would like to share a great technique I found for cleaning the hard to get dust from the Truman Cell. Spraying the inside of the cell with a Daily Shower Spray Cleaner (I use Tilex) followed by rinsing thoroughly, removes a large portion of dirt and dust that basic water and soap does not. Using this cleaner has resulted in prolonging the snapping noises (from larger particles getting stuck) from occuring about 10 times longer than basic soap and water cleaning. Unfortunately, I cannot speak on any affects on warranty this could have, but from personal experience, using this spray has only had positive effects on this air purifying experience. Hope this helps any who are unpleasantly stuck with this machine.
