Bob of Seattle writes (1/18/03): I had bought a cart load of products from them and one of the items, a Deep Fryer, had been placed under the cart rather than in the cart. When I went to my car, I promptly unloaded the cart, closed the trunk and drove home. When I unloaded the cart the Deep Fryer was not there. I went back to the store, looked at all the carts then asked an employee if someone had found it and turned it in. They said no, but searched the carts and lot again. When they did not find it, rather than saying "sorry" which I expected, they literally "ran" to the item on the shelf and gave me a new one. I was very impressed at such wonderful service.

Mark writes:
I would encourage anyone and everyone to purchase a Costco membership and do your shopping there whenever possible. I have had to return three items to Costco in the lifetime of my membership - two were items that broke less than a year after purchase. We do not always have a receipt available but Costco's employees, cheerfully or not, will do the computer legwork needed to find your item and give you your refund, no questions asked. This alone makes shopping there invaluable, because I have a guarantee that if my purchased product does not perform or is defective, it will be taken back and I don't have to deal with one of the companies in the Rogue's Gallery to get my money back.

The company puts itself at risk by doing this, because there are some individuals out there that obviously will try to take advantage of this policy. But that willingness to give the customer the benefit of the doubt makes them a stellar company.

Costco also provides terrific discounts on long distance service and car insurance. We purchase our insurance through them and have never once regretted it.

Judith writes:
I was amazed to get a refund check in the mail for two towels I had purchaed at COSTCO. The enclosed letter stated that the manafacturer had ststed that the towels weighed xx number of ounces per towel, when they actually came up 2-3 ounces short. Costco refunded me four dollars for each ten dollar towel I had purchased.

I bought the towels because I liked them. There was no listing of weight, there was no reason for COSTCO to have refunded anyone any money. No one would have ever known that the towels were short weighted, except the people at COSTCO.

The fact that they refunded some of the cost and apologized for the problem reminds me of the good old days, when customer service meant something.

Does this sound right to you? We'd like to hear about your experiences with this company. Let us know if it's been bad or good.

Please note that we may also have complaints about this company. After all, not everyone has the same experience. And of course, by listing a company in our Good Guys section, we're not endorsing or guaranteeing them.
