Select Comfort - Uncomfortable

Consumer Complaints & Reviews

I bought a full-sized dual chamber Select Comfort Bed in 2005. I knew 2 different couples who had Select Comfort Beds and they were both happy with their purchases so I bought one. I had problems with the trough effect that others complained about. I also had problems with some leakage. I was divorced after buying the mattress and I would end up sleeping in the trough or on my side across it. Now, one side loses pressure within 30 minutes to an hour and it is not the side that I sleep on. I would sometimes lay with my head and shoulders on that side. Now, with the one side losing so much air during the night, I roll into the deflated side and wake up hurting. I bought the bed because of back problems and I needed surgery on my back and both knees but I had an immunity problem that prevented me from having surgery.

When I got the paperwork out that explained the warranty, I saw all of the charges. I think it said 20% of the original cost of the mattress and 4% for each year since the date of purchase. I lost my job almost 11 months ago and I live alone without any help. I am trying to get Disability and right now I am living on some savings that I have, which are going fast. There is no way that I could afford to replace it and if I send it off like the instructions say, I do not have another bed to sleep on. I am very disappointed with their 20-year warranty. They do not tell you the warranty details when you buy it, only that it is for 20 years. I agree with the others that a class-action lawsuit should be done. From where I live, it would have been very hard to try to send it back after the 30 days. Also, 30 days does not give you long enough to tell. Most mattresses that cost this much will give you 90 days.

When I looking at buying a Sleep Number bed, I was looking at an i8, the salesman pushed more towards the iLE which is supposed to be between the i8 and the i10. He never told me that according to Select Comfort it's not returnable. The bed was the most uncomfortable thing I have ever laid on. Where the air chamber is there are two sunken spots even when they are inflated to 100. I wasn't happy with the shipping cost or assembly of approximately 2 plus hours. The pump leaked down every night and every day. The salesman "Lee" came to my house on Sat. after it was delivered and assembled by me on that Tues. to bring a new pump. He was astonished at the sunk in spots and the quality of the mattress. He advised that this didn't look right.

After sleeping on the bed for 10 nights and my back hurting every morning and not sleeping past 4 am any morning, I contact select comfort to return this overpriced piece of junk. They informed me that special editions were not returnable. I hit the ceiling, this was not stated to me when I ordered the thing or I would not have ordered it. What is the 30 to 45 day trial period for? The salesman told me once I got a hold of him several days later that he would fix it no matter what it took. Well he has avoided me like the plague. He did advise me that there was a sign at the front desk, I told him that it was his responsibility as the store manager and a salesman to inform me of special stipulations such as this.

I slept on the mattress for 32 days and just couldn't stand it anymore and disassembled it and put it back into all 6 of the boxes. I have tried to call him many times and he is either sick, on vacation, on a conference call or just on days off. I got a call from him on the 35th day and he was going to Houston to a big meeting and he was to present my case to all his bosses, but I haven't heard from him since, 9 days now. Can a large corporation like this be so irresponsible as to make all these claims and TV advertisements and not back them up with good customer service as expected? I am still trying to contact the store manager but he won't be back for another day. The worst company I have ever dealt with in any situation.

My wife and I purchased this bed at the beginning of the summer. The bed was a nightmare from day one: it slides around on the frame, and the pillow top shrinks away from the edge. The extreme discomfort has me waking up several times every night to correct the problem. I stay in hotels a lot due to my business, and I find that I am sleeping far better at hotels than in my own bed. We have called Select Comfort repeatedly, but they keep stringing us along with a new part here and a broken promise there. I just want the bed gone and get a full refund. I have asked for this even before the "30 day guarantee" was up, and they have tried every trick in the book to avoid that. Please help.

P6 expanded queen mattress and plastic junk base. The one star above is only because this site would not let me go into the negative zoning.

The Sleep Number bed is a piece of ** We paid about 4K for it, several years ago, because my wife likes a soft mattress and I, a hard mattress. It has a heater and we even got that stupid vibrator in the bed which was supposed to make it vibrate in a bunch of ways. We also got the thing that raises the mattress either F or B so we pretty much bought the whole shebang.

We wanted the best possible sleep environment as possible. Presently, my side doesn't hold air. A couple of years ago, the pump crapped out and we had to pay 3/4's the price for a new one. The bed is very cheaply made and the thing isn't worth one-fifth of what we paid for it.

It's a money-making scam and the service department sucks, too. It turns out that the owner of the company has a wood pellet stove company called Bixby Energy. And guess what? I have the stove, too. It's quite a stove when it works but it has to be watched 24/7 if not freezing to death is important to you. Both products are advertised extravagantly as if they were technical breakthroughs. The Bixby service/parts department doesn't exist as far as I can tell. There isn't a Bixby repair person within a thousand miles.

Anyway, don't buy the bed; its junk. It doesn't even come with head and footboard. I could have bought a whole bedroom set with a real mattress, for what I paid for this thing. "You get what you pay for" is no longer true!

I selected this bed hoping that it would give us sleepful nights. When I saw it coming in the house in pieces of plastic, I started to wonder why it was so expensive. I tried to sleep on it but I was out of the bed most of the night! My back, legs and shoulders hurt so bad the next day I thought I had the flu. I ached all over. The bed was so low that I could hardly get out of it. When I did get out and looked at the bed, it looked like two sink holes. I then had to inflate up to 100 just to raise the bed so I could get out of it. What a piece of junk!

I called to tell them that I don't want the bed. "No problem," they said. However, I had to keep it for 30 days! I knew after five days that I have had enough! But I had to keep it for 30 days before it could be returned. Now, they came to take it and I got a bill for $530.00! "Oh sure, try it for 30 days and if you don't like it, return it," they say. Well, I tried it for five terrible, uncomfortable, sleepless nights and that was enough for me. I didn't know that it was going to cost me over $100 a night to "try" to sleep on it. They made their money even if I returned it. There is no way that this bed should cost over $2,000.00!

I had to pay for a set up when I received it, then I had to pay for shipping it back. Oh, and they had me check out this wonderful mattress pad cover that was so cool to the touch you would think it came out of the refrigerator. "They line space suits with this material to keep them cool," they said. Ha, what a joke. When we put it on the bed, we couldn't tell which was the correct side up. How come it wasn't cool at home? Another rip off that cost $250.00! I wonder why they didn't put that mattress pad on a bed to feel how cool it was? It was on a cardboard display. Buyers, beware!

I was deceived, hoodwinked, and bamboozled with this Sleep Number bed. I wake up with the worst back pain than my old bed. I don't sleep all night. My sides hurt. The bed does not contour to my body like they advertised.

I called the store to tell them that the bed was sliding of the base and the base was assembled wrong because there's a side of the base that sticks out. This is the worst bed ever. Finally, in so many words, the sales person was telling me that it was not their problem and that I had to deal with it. I don't know who's worst the bed or the customer service. Neither one is worth it. My rating is zero. I had to pick a star or I couldn't submit my compliant. Thank you and I hope someone has finally heard my voice.

I am currently again unable to sleep due to your air mattress bed. So I'd figure that I should share my grief (and how I wish I could have spent that wedding money on a better bed). My wife and I purchased your product, a queen size model QS29PSE, and from day 1 it has been a nightmare. First off, my wife and I discovered that we could not even sleep on our own side of the bed without being sent to the sinkhole in the middle of the bed. One of your representatives at a sleep store recommended that we pump the bed up a few times a week to get rid of the sinkhole.

To our dismay, we have been doing that (surprisingly, my cars do not require this much attention) to this day but we still deal with that. Secondly, I wake up with hip, knee and lower back pain (this includes experimenting with the different numbers a couple weeks at a time). My wife, who is now approaching 2 months pregnant, is having hip, neck and shoulder numbness (dealing with numbness for months) when she sleeps on her side. I am not impressed with going to the chiropractor to get adjusted only to get bent out of alignment the later in the day.

I really want a refund so I can get a better bed so we can sleep to be productive. I am really surprised at how others we run into who also were dissatisfied about your product. Truthfully, we do not speak highly of your product to our co-workers, friends, or family and tell them to not take the commercials seriously. We also purchased a mattress pad that controls temp (421279) and that did not fair well as we struggled with controlling bed temp at night. We took that off after a few months and it's a closet item.

We bought a Sleep Number mattress in 2007 and regret it very much. It is uncomfortable and the cheap foam parts don't hold up and need frequent replacement. When you talk with the costumer service staff, they think that replacing parts after one or two years is acceptable.

Please don't make the same mistake and waste your money and health on this garbage.

I purchased the Sleep Number Queen size on April 2011 and it was horrible. My back and hip would be in so much pain. I purchased the bed on a trial basis at the Westminister Store in California, Sleep expert, Tina **, never told me that I would have to pay for delivery and pickup of $400.00 dollars, Now, HC Processing corporation is calling me every day and it has been a nightmare. But I am glad I got this bed out of my house. When they came to pick it up, one side was broken.

Select comfort employees are liars. There needs to be a class action suit now! I get sick when I see any advertising regarding Sleep Number bed.

We received our Sleep Number bed in August 2010 and it has been horrible since the first night.

Both my husband and I suffer from intense back pain and the Sleep Number bed seems to make it worse. In June of 2011, I noticed that my side of the bed seemed to be losing air, and when I tried to use the remote to re-inflate, I received an "Er" code. My husband and I researched the directions to "deal" with that code and printed and followed the directions, including checking all connections, checking the outlet, and resetting the bed. Nothing helped.

Now, I am sleeping on a board, with no support whatsoever. At one time, my husband was giving testimonials on the radio regarding how "great" this sleep system worked for us. I can only hope that I'm asked to give a testimonial. I would never recommend this sleep system to anyone, not even my worst enemy. We toss and turn all night, I wake up several times nightly, and the entire experience has been miserable. I would like a replacement, but not a Sleep Number bed. I believe that the company is responsible for that replacement due to misrepresentation of their product.

We bought the top of the line Sleep Number King system in March. I called the Customer Service Number in June to tell them that the bed had become very soft; no support; moved around too much. They said that they could send someone out for $169 fee or....they could talk me thru trying to fix it myself. No one ever " mentioned" during the sales talk that there would be such a huge fee. The customer service rep remarked that many customers had complained about the fee.
I did what she told me to do (unzip the mattress; look at the foam, etc.) Please keep in mind that we spent almost $6000 at the Sleep Number store.

We stayed at a Radisson in Aruba which has Sleep Number beds and there was no comparison to that bed vs. our sunken bed. I emailed Customer Service and was told, pay the fee ($169) or they could talk me thru it again. My husband had just had back surgery and I explained that I am not an engineer since I had already tried to fix it myself.

Upon arriving home in Ohio, I went to the store where we purchased our system, was politely told that the manager, Daphne, would take care of it but she was on vacation. Daphne was kind when she called me about a week later (she was never told about my situation until she came back even though she called her store before) She said that she would contact her manager and get back with me. She called twice again and said that her manager had not responded to the Fee issue. I didn't hear from her last week; left a message two days ago and still have heard nothing. So....this bed that isn't even 5 months old is having issues and it appears that no one wants to deal with this. I remarked to our salesperson...."why didn't one of you happen to mention the $169 service call?" He (Brad) basically said "Daphne will take care of you."

I really feel that this is a scam....$169 for spending almost $6000 when the bed (when I initially called wasn't even 3 months old?????)

My email to Customer Service was: "I will call every group I know to file a complaint; I will tell everyone I know about this horrible customer service and.....in August, I'm speaking in Chicago on "Customer Service" and will be happy to mention your company. It appears that no one really cares....

We purchased a Sleep Number mattress in 2004 for about $1,000. We got a comfortable sleep. Things were fine until we recently discovered that the wired controllers no longer function correctly. I Googled the problem and saw that folks were paying about $200 for replacement pump units.

Please know that you can unzip the mattress at the head, pull back the top of the mattress, push the button on the quick disconnect where the hose joins to the airbag and pull the hose off the bag. Then, either blow more air in by mouth or release air as necessary to obtain the inflation that feels best for you. It takes some doing, but it is absolutely free!

I am disappointed in a company that manufactures so many defective units. Clearly, they treasure their bottom line more than their customers who they overcharge in the first place.

For Christmas 2009, my husband and I decided to buy ourselves a new bed. We decided on Sleep Number Queen Size. About 6 months in, the side on my husband's side was collapsing in; they quickly sent a new piece of foam to put in and problem was solved.

About a month later, we noticed the mattress pad on my side was pulling loose all the time towards the middle of the bed. We went to the store in Champaign Market Place Mall and talked to the sales lady that sold us the bed; she suggested we buy this cover for the mattress pad to hold it in place, etc., etc., etc. I did. $150 dollars later, it sort of stopped pulling it to the middle. However, the foundation was bowed in towards the middle. We called; they sort of argued that that has never happened before (yeah right) and sent a new one.

Well, here we are 45 days later with a bowed foundation again. The first lady in Customer Service was so rude I hung up on her and called back to speak with another one that told me I had to have another problem. Okay I can agree with that but it is your bed, tell me what it is so we can fix it. His suggestion was to go buy plywood to put down under their foundation.

Excuse me, I already got suckered into spending $175; I am not spending another $100 on plywood for their bed that I was told takes no modification to any bed frame. I would be very happy with my money back at this point as my 1 year is running out. I think I will file an attorney general's complaint as well Monday. We bought this bed under the impression that never again in our lifetime would we have to buy another bed. That was wrong.

I purchased a Sleep Number bed 5 years ago. The side foam started to fail. I was not sure if it was covered under warranty. I went and spoke to the salesman at the store where I purchased it and acted like I was a new customer, and asked if the material such as the foam was covered under warranty. He said, yes. I then told him I have one and the foam is breaking down. He said that was normal and he gave me a card to call the company, and they would replace it with no problem.

I called the company and they said it would cost me $350.00 to replace the foam. I said I thought this was covered under warranty. She said it is, but it is prorated. So I told her that in fact, there was no warranty since everything on the bed would wear before the twenty years and they know the foam would not last. I said, no thanks, and I said it would be cheaper for me to buy a new bed. I then called the store back where I purchased the bed. I told them of the problem with the bed and once again they told me it would be covered under warranty.

The normal person thinks when a person says it is covered under warranty, there is no cost to the customer. I said to her I called the factory and told her what they said, she then quickly changed her information that the warranty is only a partial warranty. They misrepresent the product and is fraud. My campaign is to let as many people know not to purchase this product, that it is a scam.

We bought the $3,000 plus sleep number bed to get a good nights sleep. At first, my wife and I slept well-really comfortably. But within the last year or so, my wife has become more and more sleep deprived. She used to love getting into bed at night but now dreads getting into bed. It occurred to us that the problem is the deteriorating mattress. Both my wife and my sides of the bed sag in the middle like a hammock. I have increased my sleep number over the past year from 55, 65, 75, 85 and now 90 but it has not helped the rut. By early morning, I have a back ache that lasts until after I get to work. I wake daily an hour or two before my alarm goes off at 4:45 am and move to the recliner in the den. I now take naps in the afternoon in my recliner when returning from work. This bed should be called "Sleepless at any Number".

Purchase product in late 2009 and paid way too much money for what it is definitely not worth it at all. Since we received the bed about a month or so later I starting getting back pain and it has not stop since I have tried setting it to different settings and still nothing. Customer service is no help at all. I finally had to buy a new mattress after spending soooo much money on that junk! I do not know what to do with the sleep number bed now????

We bought the bed from Sleep Number in 2005. The sales person that sold the bed to us informed us of a 20 year "no worries" warranty. It wasn't until the bed was delivered that the warranty booklet was available. The pump went bad and the foam became warped. The bed was purchased due to our bad backs. My husband and I are 72 and 87 years old. My back is even worse now that my bed is not functional and warped. This bed was purchased for $5500 and has been terrible! Customer service told me that they would send me the parts for my bed (they guessed the problem from so-called trouble shooting over the phone, mind you I am in my 70's) for 20% of the pro-rated amount of the warranty!

No one is available from the company to come and fix the bed, so I was told to try and ask a family member or friend to help me replace the parts. My granddaughter, who is a weight lifter, had a hard time lifting the top pad in just the trouble shooting, what do you mean ask a family member to help? What type of service is this?? When the part arrived, my granddaughter informed me that the wrong component was sent. When she called the cs department, they said no returns! They told my granddaughter during the original conversation that returns were within 30 days starting from that day! The cs rep said he would have to review the recording of that conversation to verify what she had told him. In other words, you are a customer who has spent $5500 with us, however, you are not trustworthy, and we do not care if you get ripped off! I will never recommend this bed to anyone! It is absolutely a RIP OFF!!

When thinking of buying this sleep system you should take a second look and buy a different bed. Number 1, can't find a comfort zone, a backache greets me every morning. Number 2, bed sags in the middle (queen) 2 halves even with the center foam in place. Number 3, when reporting problems with the bed all was replied buy this, buy that to fix the problem. Well guess what, it failed.

I have been having trouble with this bed for the last four years. It doesn't hold air. The couplings wear and it loses air. I cannot even sleep on bed then. I was told there was a 20-year warranty. They must have had so many problems; they now say it is prorated. That is not in the contract I signed. I called and they take at least a week to send parts that I have to pay for! They couldn't care less. So, one of us is sleeping on the couch. This is not right!

I have a bad back and that is why we bought this bed! I need to sleep on a mattress, not the couch! This product does not honor what they advertise! They make you wait at least a week for your parts and then you have to fix it yourself if you can! This last time, the parts got lost and I have to wait even longer! I still have no bed and I called them on January 22!

I bought a Sleep Number bed in 2006. There was deflating problems, so I called the customer service number to find out what to do. They were very very rude! They have no one that will come out and help with the bed. I did what they said and called back to let them know nothing that they suggested worked. Second call to them - they were still extremely rude! I am at my wits end. I have terrible back problems and now have to be the one to put it back together. I have never in my life dealt with such a rude company. I recommended this bed to two other people who bought it. They too have had problems and called customer service. Again - they were told the same thing, that they do not have people that come out to check on the bed - therefore you as a consumer need to do it. Unbelievable!

I purchased a pillow from the Sleep Number company in December 2009. I purchased a Down pillow because the saleslady who sold it to me informed me that there would be no quills to stick out of the pillow (which is my experience with most down pillows). Just last night alone, I pulled out 4 quills. When calling customer service, they told me that all down pillows have quills that will stick out and that since they were not "privy" to my conversation with the sales rep, the only alternative they could give me is a product exchange. They couldn't exchange for another down pillow because "quills are not a manufacturer defect" and they could not refund me my money. Instead, they had the audacity to tell me to spend an additional $14.99 on an "inexpensive" pillow cover when I was told that I wouldn't need one in the first place! I wouldn't buy anything else from them.

Junk, just like all the comments made. Nasty delivery people. Poorly made. Mechanical breakdowns since the bed was new. Lousy, misleading LIMITED warranty. Air chamber sinks repeatedly throughout the night. Remote went bad after a few months, new batteries don't help. Communication with customer service is fruitless. I am SICK of fixing this thing myself.

I will GLADLY participate in a class-action suit. Two grand for a lot of aggravation. Interrupted sleep. I need to replace this bed, but I can't afford it. I have to put up with sleeping on the side of a hill.

I purchased a sleep number bed model 4000 October 2005. All went well until this past summer when my remote quit working. The numbers don't display right. I also thought the 20 year warranty covered all parts replacement but was told it was prorated and a new pump with remote would cost me $112. I declined. I also have problems with rolling to the center of the bed. My hips are hurting and I cannot stand to sleep on it anymore.

Customer service is a joke with this company. After they get your money, they don't care anymore. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH SELECT COMFORT SLEEP NUMBER BEDS. I am going to purchase a regular pillow top mattress. They won't pay for replacement parts as they stated they would under the 20 warranty.

I purchased a bed in January. It was installed by the company. The mattress slides off of the foundation because the foundation coverlet was never installed. It also has begun to lose air and has sunk.
"Select Comfort" has stated that the 2 year warranty is only for manufacturers parts. However, their installers did not install a manufactueres part and they have stated that I must buy something that I never received because it has been more than 30 days.
I highly recommend that this purchase is not worth $1,000 or any dollar amount even if they are giving it away.

The warranties are misleading and the company offers no solutions other than to spend more money.

On 2/12/08 i bought a down alternative pillow that was just fit right for me. But after few months (about 8 months) now it lost it's firmness and it doesn't fit my structure anymore and it's hurting my neck. So i called customer service and the supervisor but all they said is that "we have strict rules here so we can't do anything about that." I really don't understand why they have a FIVE YEAR WARRANTY if they don't do anything.

Bought Sleep number mattress by Select Comfort in Sept 2006. Both my wife and I were always rolling towards the middle of bed where there is a foam divider which is about 1-2 inches below the air mattresses and consequently had back pains. In 2009 called Select Comfort and they told us to disconect air pumps and put plastic caps on the inputs to determine if mattresses are leaking. The caps did not stop air loss.

Called up Company on 11/23/09 and were informed that as mattresses were purchased in 2006, we would have to pay 32% or $111.- to replace leaky mattresses. The also told us that the mattresses were not designed so that people could sleep in the middle of the bed. We told the representative that if we would have been told this when we purchased the bed, we definitely would not have purchased this mattress. A so-called lifter to remedy the difference in height between the mattresses and the center foam divider was available at an extra cost. In addition there was a shipping charge for the items.

In our opinion, this is just a hyped-up glorified air mattress whose equivalent can be purchased in any sports or department store for a fraction of the price. Our advice is DON'T BUY!

bed keeps losing air on one side. wife cannot get out of bed.

My wife and I bought a Sleep Number bed in December 0f 2006. It was a big expense for us, as we are retired, but we felt it would be worth it to get relief from back pain. And it was, until six months ago. Our digital remote controls became difficult to read and the pump stopped working. We figured since we paid $2,326.84 for the bed and were told there was a 20-year warranty and "exceptional customer service" there would be no problem in repairing or replacing the pump and remotes. Not so!

When I called the service number I was told we would have to pay $114, plus some additional fees and taxes to replace the non-working parts. That is a lot of money when you are retired and on a limited budget. We were amazed that our expensive purchase didn't last even three years. Our select comfort mattress is now soft and saggy and we are suffering back pain problems again.

We had our new king sized bed install by your delivery company.

On the first night, I slept fine but my wife's side continued to drop in number and firmness. We changed sides, I set it at 35, it then came down to 30, then 25.

We called your customer service dept. and they were not only not helpful, but insulting -- suggesting that it could be a change in barometric pressure, etc. (from one side of the bed to the other?)

They insisted that we go through the diagnostic test. Which we did. By definition a 40 minute minimum. And please show me in the book where it says how to access the code! On the third call, they told us how to check, and it was NO on both sides, so the bed was fine. (except one side still kept sinking)

We called our local sales manager and she came to our home, checked out the bed and find that the hose on my wife's side was not snapped in. She re-connected and the leak is gone. No thanks to your "service reps or instruction book" Most trouble shooting instructions go to the simple solution first,i.e. is it plugged in -- how about a check on the hose connection?

It was clear that your service people simply wanted to get us off the phone -- and had no desire to listen and diagnose the problem

My husband and I purchased a basic sleep number bed in January 2009. I suffered from back and neck pain and the store clerk promised the bed would help. The bed he showed me was of normal height, and he showed me wireless digital controls. When the bed arrived, it was lower than normal. The controls were not digital or wireless. I called the customer service department and was told the digital controls were extra. How are you supposed to find your "sleep number" if you can't see the numbers? I went back to the store and spoke to a different salesman; he gave me a couple of digital controls.

The bed did not help my back and neck problems. I called the customer diservice department again to return the bed, before the 30 day trial. They said I had to pack up the bed, ship it, and pay $350 to return it.

I decided I could not do this with my bad back. A few weeks later one side of the bed completely deflated! The customer diservice department was of no help. You are made to "trouble shoot" following their directions over the phone. You practically have to disassemble the damn bed. Only to find out the pump doesn't work. They said they would send me a new one. When the new pump arrived, it came with non digital controls. I called to tell them they sent the wrong thing. The woman at the other end said that was what her "records" indicated. I asked to speak to a supervisor, but she said she could not transfer me!

She said I had to return the parts. I told her I was not returning anything until I got the right part. She said they would bill me for it.
My husband now sleeps in the deflated part of the bed. It's worse than a hammock! He doesn't have a bad back now, but he will soon! All I want at this point is to return the thing and get my money back. But they won't take it back because the 30 day "trial" has expired.
What can people like us do?

Somebody please help!

I purchased a sleep number bed at the Chandler Arizona store in 2005 over the past year, I have been unable to sleep! The foam has areas that have "caving" in, and we have called for help many times. First it's use the vacuum on the foam, we did. Next, try turning it. Next," oh it's normal wear and tear, it's not covered". The store employees say you have a 20 year warranty and that's why we purchased it. Except, the 20 years doesn't include...

Went to 3 different stores in Phoenix area, and all employees say, it's covered just call customer service. No one in that company in sales has obviously been trained to either tell the truth or have any idea what they are talking about. I called the local area manager and he said he would send it up the ladder and call me back. Needless to say when I finally called him back, he said "not covered" but we would be happy to sell you another.

I visited Sleep America, one of Sleep Numbers distributors who said they too have had this problem and their area manager ALWAYS replaces the foam at no charge for their customers.

I have very bad arthritis and am in constant pain, have had and will be having additional surgeries. I can not again come home from the hospital and get into this be which makes everything worse. I also can not afford to purchase another bed. This sleep number bed cost me over $3,500.00 not even four years ago.

We bought a sleep number bed April 22, 2007 and after only about 3 months, the pump just stopped working. The company replaced it and yesterday, just 29 days AFTER the two year warranty expired, the pump just stopped working AGAIN. We called and found out that our only recourse was we would have to buy a new pump since it was out of warranty for $350 (offered at a pro-rated cost of ONLY $98), but they would pay shipping and handling.

Needless to say, that's way out of our budget! We purchased it in good faith and the customer service said this was an unusual occurrence. However, when we checked on the internet, there were literally hundreds of people complaining about the same problem. So much for "good faith". We bought a bed that supposedly has a 20 year warranty. . .for almost $1500. Now, two years later, we have a bed that we can't sleep on and no money to buy a new one.

Bought the bed, sleep worsened, back worsened, pt and pills and now a dip in the middle, they want us to pay for it now, after a year. I wont. To hell with them

I recently bought the Sleep Number I8 Bed. I bought the bed because I have a bad back, and Select Comfort advertises the fact that their beds allow you to select the sleep number that works for you. I sampled the I8, as well as other beds, in one of its stores, and I ultimately purchased the I8. Since purchasing the bed, I have learned that the one thing that the company sells itself on - that you can select a comfort level that works for you - is a lie.

The first night, I set my side of the bed at 40 when I went to bed. When I woke up, it was at 60. My wife set her side to 35. When she woke up, it was at 10. This has continued for virtually every night that I have slept on the bed. As a result, I wake up with back pains, etc. Additionally, before leaving for work, I set it at 35 to see if it stays. When I return from work, it has fluctuated any where from 60 to 5. The same is true for my wife's side.

I called up customer service to express my concern. The irony is that there is a specific customer service prompt for customers who are experiencing shifts in their numbers and noisy beds (I'll get to that next). It is very telling that they have a designated set of customer service representatives to address these two concerns. The customer service representative told me, yes, you're right, actually the bed doesn't stay at the number that you've selected. It changes due to temperature, weight, etc. I was never advised of this; if I was, I would NEVER have purchased the bed.

Select Comfort is falsely advertising its product.

In addition, because the sleep number shifts, when I arrive at home, I have to adjust my side of the bed. Well, some nights, I return after my wife is asleep. Unfortunately, she is awoken by me because the air chamber underneath the bed creates very loud cracking noises when I attempt to adjust my side of the bed. That didn't happen when I was in the store. When I spoke with the customer service representative about this, I was told (1) you probably didn't hear it in the store, to which I informed her that my wife and I were the ONLY customers in the store at the time, and there was NO noise; and (2) if I don't have carpet underneath my bed, then the noise will be noticeably loud! This too I was never advised about.

I have attempted in vain to the return the bed since it was delivered on April 22nd because I was advised that I have to sleep on it for 30 days. I expect to return the bed the first available day, and I expect to receive full value for my purchase. I think that Consumer Affairs should monitor this product. Thank you.

I was advised that I am responsible for paying for the shipping costs to the apartment, shipping costs back to the company, and other delivery-related costs. I was induced to buying this bed, and I should not pay them what will amount to $500 because it misrepresented its product to me. Also, my back has been in more pain because of the fluctuation in the number.

I originally purchased Select comfort 5000 king series. very uncomfortable. Upgraded to 7000 series still woke with back problems. They came out with a new foam covered series and I upgraded for 1000 more bucks. I still wake with severe back ache! I can sleep like a log in hotel beds which I due on numerous occasions. No back pain, zero! In addition to pain, the numbers change constantly. Select Comfort sent me a new pump which is to hard for a senior citizen to install and It isn't going to solve the problems. I'm on a fixed income and would love to replace this overrated air bed. Can someone Help?

We bought our mattress in 2005. Our pump went out the first time and they replaced it free of charge. The pump has gone out again and they will only cover 64% costing us $162 plus shipping. This is a VERY expensive mattress to begin with, we feel they should cover this cost. Obvious this is a faulty mechanism, after viewing the several complaints on line.

I purchased a Sleep Comfort bed several months ago after the sales person promised me that my back would be protected because of the well made construction. This was not the truth the bed was so low to the floor my knees were in my face. They promise that you have a lifetime replacement warranty. What they don't tell you is that you have to do the installation or there is a charge. A very very high charge for shipping and for somebody else to do the installation. If you are disabled, or a senior citizen then they know you can't do the installation.

If you have problems after the purchase they are not helpful in anyway. They treat you like the plague. The mattress is another horror, I purchased a firm mattress I didn't get what I paid for. If you want to exchange the mattress you have to pay to have it boxed and for shipping of the return of the mattress and a replacement fee. When you adjust the bed you feel like you are being folded in half. I accidentally hit the wrong button on the remote and the next thing I was lying flat. I tried several different buttons on the remote and they all made the bed go flat. I needed to replace the remote but there is a FEE.

Surf the Internet for another company or do what I did and go to a bed store. I tried the bed in the store their adjustable beds sell for must less than the Sleep Comfort. If you need to replace the whole bed you can buy two and half beds for the price of one Sleep Comfort bed. When Sleep Comfort tells you it has a LIFE TIME WARRANTY remember you pay for that warranty with shipping fees. They hope that you buy their bed because to return it they charge you a huge fee to ship it back and if you cancel the order they charge you a FEE!

I had to pay 500.00 to have someone to box and ship the bed back to Sleep Comfort but it was not send back to California. It was shipped to an address in Kentucky to a company called Leggett & Platt

Detroit, Michigan

U.S.A.

This is the worst bed to buy. i've spent thousands of dollars going to a chiropractor because of this terrible bed. i've had all the problems listed above. no need to rewrite about the pain i go through every morning.

I've had it less than 2 years and the gizmo to adjust the setting suddenly went haywire. It is stuck on 100 and won't budge. This is almost like sleeping on the floor. I have liked it less and less as the days go by and was thinking of a new bed but it was so expensive that I couldn't justify it. Now after reading other comments I don't think I will waste any time or more money on it. I need something with no maintenance.

It never did help with my back, if anything it may even be worse. And now I have to buy a different bed.

In Oct., 2005, my husband and I purchased our Series 7000 Select Comfort Sleep Number Bed. It is a King/Split with Adjustable Beds and Massage. Each side is an XL Twin Bed that operate off the same pump but with individual controls for the air chambers, massage, and up/down adjustments. I talked like heck to convince my husband that we should spend over $6,000 for this bed. We were retirement age, downsizing, and this seemed like something we deserved. WRONG!!! We put up with both sides losing air shortly after purchase. Over a year ago both air controls wouldn't register any numbers at all--just lines--and the Company did send us a new pump at no charge.

We had to take our old pump to a UPS store and send it back, but again, at no charge to us. However, we had to have someone install the new pump. We can't physically craw around on the floor hooking and unhooking hoses, etc. I believe I asked and was told at that time that we could NOT pay to have someone from the Select Comfort Co. come and do this for us. They only troubleshoot by phone. After having the new pump installed, we continued, and still continue, to have problems with both sides losing (or gaining) air 24 hrs. a day. My husband has constantly asked why I am sleeping in a hole. My bed is low in the middle and high on each side almost all of the time. I didn't want to complain too much to my husband since I had convinced him we needed to buy this bed. My husband sets his side on 60 at night and it will be at 80 in the morning or sometimes will be at 20 or lower.

My side usually loses air. I set it at 50 or 45 at night and it is almost always at 5 or 10 in the morning. I have been experiencing lower back, neck, and shoulder pain and my husband has been experiencing lower back pain since shortly after we purchased this bed. I called Select Comfort again this past week and was told by a very sweet female Customer Service representative that there is virtually nothing they can do. She suggested I get a family member or neighbor to come to our residence and troubleshoot with the Company by phone. I said no, Thank You, I told her that I would like someone from the Company to come and fix our $6000 bed or take it back. She was very sorry but apparently that was not an option. She said it is normal for the number set in Memory to fluctuate during the day because of the air outside the bed, but I told her that the air is fluctuating nightly while we're IN bed.

Two days ago we received an unmarked brown envelope in the mail from a Minnesota Zip Code (I looked up the Zip Code online which is how I found out that it came from Minnesota) with nothing inside but a little plastic envelope holding two plastic caps to cap-off air hoses. We assume these are from Select Comfort but have no idea what to do with them. My husband and I would be more than happy to join others in a class action lawsuit against Select Comfort -- Sleep Number Bed. I believe I have a few friends (who I have not yet made aware of this website) who I believe would also like to join in such a lawsuit.

Husband (back problems). Has had to miss work for Dr. apptms for back pain on more than one occasion since we purchased this bed. Wife -- Retired -- I have been to Chiropractor and to Physical Therapy for Shoulder/Neck pain since purchasing this bed. I had attributed the pain to perhaps an injury but began to realize that it did not start until after sleeping on this bed for far too long and that my pain might actually be attrihbuted to this horrible bed.

We purchased a Sleep Number Bed 5000 after visiting the store and checking out different styles of beds. We decided that this we be the best considering that Rob has back problems. After having the bed for not even a year the sides (foam pieces) broke down and needed to be replaced. And this have over and over again. My hips and neck starting hurting and Rob can now barely get out of bed in the morning due to the pressure that this bed has created on his lower and mid back. He and I have both tried different settings with no luck and we just want some help and get none from the company, which is where we purchased the bed directly.

Foam pieces are garbage, has created more physical problems, doesn't seem to hold air.

I am extremely disappointed in the product. One Side of the bed started leaking. When we call we discovered we had to trouble shoot the issue- a problem since we are both handicap. The cover of the bed was also ripped, no doubt due to it low quality. I feel I have been ripped on by buying this.

We had to purchase a new cover and install it. It really upset me that these celebraties are adverting this low quality piece of merchandise.

we purchased the bed in march of 2008 we have never slept the entire night have back and hip pain every day..this bed is not what they make it out to be. we have tried every setting, still no relief..these people that advertize this bed shoulh be ashamed.

would like to have the money we spent on this bed..to buy a real bed

I have a bad back, when I went to the store they told me this would be the best sleep I ever had - guaranteed, so I figured I'd try it since they said full money back guarantee and the signs all over the store said the same thing, so I bought the bed, every morning I would wake up and the number would be different, it wouldn't be within 5 it would go up 40 or down 15. My back was always in a knot.

I would call customer service and all they are constantly telling me they have one this doesn't happen to them but biometrics / heat the bed will adjust - check the connections, I checked them they were tight - same issue - called again same thing, went back to the store they even called their own customer service people/ guy gave the same thing biometrics/ heat like he was reading a script they gave me another pump, had to take the entire bed apart to hook this one up then it didn't work, brought it back to the store.

I then called the number in the brochure they sent me another pump this one was wired (I asked for it because the third excuse was maybe something was interfering with the wireless). The woman on the phone told me the return would be $29.99, but to try the new pump they would extend my trial period. So like an idiot I did, it worked for about three days then the same thing. I called back to return it, of course I hear theirs does not do that how great the bed is did you try a second foam free of charge, we'll extend the warranty again. I said forget it I just want my money back, now they are telling me it will be $29.99 per box and cost me over $100 to ship it back.

I said I wanted them to pull the recording, they pulled it called me back and said they listened to it and so did two managers and that the woman I spoke with the first time said $29.99 per box, so I asked to hear the recording, they said there was no way they could do that and I was stuck and they'd ruin my credit rating if I didn't pay for the shipment. I want to know if there is any type of class action lawsuit against them in Virginia or anywhere else I should not have to pay for shipping this junk back.

My back is killing me, plus its costing me over $100 to ship the thing back to their shipping and receiving place in Minnesota. I am looking into suing for the shipping costs.

I payed $1400 for two air mattresses that make one queen size. After 2 1/2 months of back pain, I finally gave up trying to find my NUMBER. A sucker and his money are soon parted. Yes, Apparently I am a sucker. DON'T make the same mistake! To return anything to QVC you need to send it back in the box it came in. I don't know anybody that saves 4 big boxes for 30 days. But, they know that too.

I purchased this bed because it promised a more restful and recooperative sleep. What I've actually experienced is waking up in the middle of the night with back pain and a deflated mattress. I have asked Select Comfort help with the problem of the air chambers losing air. They simply send new attachments that I have to assemble to correct the problem but it does only temporarily.

As a result of purchasing and trying to sleep in this bed, I have excruciating back pain. Motrin is now a part of my daily diet. I am tired all day because I am up and down all night trying to get comfortable. I wasted about $1,500 on this glorified air mattress that I had to assemble myself. Because the air chambers keep losing air, I only have the use of one chamber at a time. So I paid for a queen sized bed, but I'm sleeping on a twin sized mattress. I want my money back for this lousy bed and I want to be compensated for my constant lower back pain and suffering.

My husband had lower back pain that he attributed to the bed we were sleeping in: a top of the line Serta that was about 2 or 3 years old - he said he'd never had a great night's sleep on it. As a result, we purchased a sleep number bed about a year and a half ago. We had problems right off the bat with the mattresses being punctured and would not hold air. The store we bought it from replaced the air mattresses immediately. My husband has complained ever since that his back hurts so much more after sleeping in the sleep number bed.

We usually keep it at 100 now, on both sides, and it still has a ridge in the center that's higher than the mattresses on either side. When he goes off-shore fishing and sleeps on a thin piece of foam covering a piece of wood they call the bunk bed, he says he sleeps better and wakes with no pain. When we go to our friend's house in the mountain and sleep on their very old worn out bed, he says he sleeps better and wakes with dramatically less pain.

Wherever we might go and sleep in another bed, the day after we get home and he sleeps in the sleep number, he's walking around like a cripple, clutching his lower back. The difference is dramatic. The sleep number has caused him severe and ongoing lower back pain. At around $3,000 for the split mattress high-end king size and everything that went with it, we are really upset and he is in pain constantly.

We purchased the basic (eatern king) sleep number model bed in 2006. My husband suffers from a bad back so we tried something that we heard rave reviews on. It was the worst decision we've ever made. His back has become so bad, he will need surgery.

I am good of health and I've been feeling my back ache lately and it seems to be getting worse. I do not recommend for anyone to buy this bed. I won't even put it online on ebay to resale it! Please don't purchase this product!

We purchased our king size Sleep Number bed about 13 years ago. First problem came about 5 years later when one side of the bed pump quit. We got it replaced, under warranty, and had no more problems. Alas, (5-08) the same issue has started again. Being out of warranty, I'm thinking I'll check out the cost of a new pumpand/or mattress. We've tried to rule out whether the one mattress has a slow leak or is it indeed the pump. Within a 12 hour period the mattress will lose 30 pounds.

Now that I've read the consumer complaints/warnings about this product, ie pump malfunctions AND MOLD!!! which I have cleaned off numerous times, I am now hesitating to even purchase a pump or a new mattress. We haven't slept well for a few years now unless we are so exhausted we don't care where or how we sleep. We both suffer from chronic lower back pain that the mattress just doesn't help with anymore and my migraines have increased, usually waking up with them....triggered by mold??? Thank you for websites like this that help alert consumers to performance and service issues. I, myself just don't feel like pursing any kind of replacement and shall search for an excellent quality mattress.

We bought our sleep number bed about a year ago. I feel like a fool when I tell people I have one and they ask me how I like it. I am still paying for the stupid thing and I'm not all that happy with it. My back pain did improve - I woke up on my old mattress feeling like I'd fallen down a mountain in the night - EVERYTHING hurt. Now I wake up relatively pain-free.

I do have a bit of a problem with rolling toward the middle when my husband is not in the bed. My remedy for this problem is to grab his pillow and cuddle it so I CAN'T roll over, or I just turn onto my other side. And when he gets in the bed when I'm lying there, my side poofs up. It's kinda fun (haha), but I don't think it's supposed to do that.

Another problem is that on my side of the bed, the side foam has collapsed. I'm ashamed for anyone to see my bed when no one is in it. It looks like a 40-year old mattress that belonged to an 800 pound person. Our numbers, by some miracle, stay the same (so far) but there are big dips where we lay. Actually, I think WE'RE the big dips. Money is not something we have in surplus by any means, so we are stuck with this stupid bed until we feel like we've gotten our money's worth out of it, or we win the lottery, neither of which may ever happen.

Now that I really think about it, I can't believe how stupid we were for paying so much money for a glorified air mattress. And shame on the company for charging so much in the first place. But I guess they know there's a fool born every minute. And one more thing - I'm half afraid to sleep on my bed because of all the complaints I've read about mold. I'm afraid to go look. Yuck!

I ordered the bed from a local store in my local Mall. I had Select Comfort do the delivery and set up. I was never able to get the bed ajusted to where I could sleep all night and ended up moving into the guest room. It took me almost two weeks to realize that the bed never maintained pressure. I would set it at 65 when I went to bed and it would be at 30 in the morning.

I communicated with the corporate offices and would just get the standard "just hang in there. you'll get used to it." I notified the local store and corporate within the 30-day trail period to come get the bed. It took another 30 days of them trying to talk me into keeping the bed before they finally agreed to come pick it up (at my cost). I had sent them a copy of a letter of complaint I had sent to my credit card compnay. I think that is what finally got their attention. At the end of the entire process someone called me and asked if I wanted a technician to come out and repair the bed!!! I bought a Sealy Postupedic pillow top mattress and have not had a sleepless night since.

Bought the base model bed (4000 series, Eastern King) for $1,500.00. In less than 2 weeks, my wife and I realized this was one of the most uncomfortable beds we had ever slept on! Over the course of two weeks we tried every setting and this bed did not deliver as promised. It is nothing but a glorified air mattress. Maybe we should have spent an extra $500 and bought the 6000 series.

I just UPS'ed the bed back to factory for $85, which along with the $100 set-up charge, comes out of my pocket. $185 to sleep on a bed for two weeks that Paul Harvey and Rush Limbaugh say changed their sleep comfort. (The fees they were paid probably make them sleep much better).

I now have to wait at least two week to get my money returned and I can't afford a new bed until I get the refund. It's interesting that they also require the entire amount of money for the bed up front. I wanted to pay them 50% at the time of the order and the balance on delivery, but that was not their policy. Select Comfort has had my money for the two weeks before the bed was delivered, the two weeks while I tried to give the bed every chance of working for us and now two to three weeks while I wait for my refund.

Purchased this over-priced, over-rated air mattress Jan, 1999. It leaked air from the beginning. Customer service department was of little help. Instructed to check for leak and do some adjustments. If that didn't fix it, they'd send us a new pump.

Now, you had to lift the king size mattress off the bed (a feat in itself) but you cannot get to the area where the tubing attaches to the mattress unless you cut a hole in fabric (which I did not do.) Consequently, we have let this go by (with aggravation) since we purchased this product. That we let it go on this long is our own fault, I realize that.

However, if a consumer pays over $3,500.00 (we did) for a product, the company should come and install it and demonstrate it. They demo was done at the store from which we purchased but of course they did not tell you of any potential problems. Customer service from the company sharply informed me that they did not have service technicians who would come to the home to correct the problem. I have sent the company another letter just to reiterate my opinion of them and their lousy product and worse yet, their lousy customer service practices.

We plan to burn this mattress. Physical damage is that our backs hurt worse than they ever did and we get less rest than we ever did. Can you put a price on that?

On April 15 2003 I purchased a dual air queen set mattress from their store in Riverside CA. We had gone on vacation that month and were not in the bed enough to give it a chance. About two weeks after the 30-night trial was up I started having severe back and hip pain. The mattress would pump itself up from 35 to 55 in the middle of the night.

I called the store and they sent me out a new pump. This did not cure the problem. One of my co-workers also bought the bed and it did the same to him. They told him that this is because of your body heat starts out lower in your setting and this will help. I've played with the setting like they had told me to for weeks at a time to no comfort.
