After my son purchased a new bed, I learned from a salesman of a class action suit for mold against Select Comfort. I came home and checked my bed and found it was full of black mold and my husband has lung cancer. What can I do to get my bed replaced? Please contact me. Thank you.
Consumer Complaints & Reviews

I wrote early with the same complaints as the others. Since this was my boyfriend's, I was only looking to resolve the comfort problem and fortunately this site popped up. I arrived home this evening to ask him to please pull the bed apart. He did not know why, I was hoping to not find the mold. Unfortunately, the bed was covered in black mold. That explains my recent respiratory issues that started about 6 months ago.
After spending a few months sleeping in his bed, I will never forget the first night going to his house to sleepover. Grant you, I have never in my life had an allergy but I could not stop sneezing and coughing, I thought I must be allergic to something in here. That's weird since I have never had an allergy. I also felt bad as I said to him, "your room smells like mold." He said he did not smell it. I had to sleep with the window open because I felt as if I were suffocating. He thought I was over reacting as I thought he was just used to the mold smell in his room. After today, I'm relieved to have read this and discovered it now before we were highlighted on the next episode of 1,000 ways to die.

After neck surgery in 2001, to help with my pain, we bought a select comfort bed and loved it. In 2004 (maybe 2005), my husband and I were both having sleeping problems. He has RLS and also sleeps with a CPAP. So we bought a second bed for him. When I bought my daughter the select comfort bed last year, my husband is having a lot of back trouble so we got the adjustable part for his bed and they came and installed it. When they installed it, I was in the room and the tech told me they would have to send me new parts for the bed and he showed me all of the mold (this was the bed from 2005.) I was in shock and we checked my bed which is 10 years old and the mold terrified me.
I am a real estate agent and appraiser or at least I was until 2 years ago when various strange illnesses disabled me. I am well aware of mold and what it can do. Years ago, I was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease and put me on chemo-therapy. I have been on one drug after another because no person has been able to treat my headaches, fainting, fatigue and one health problem after another. I live in a very small town and I am sure I will have to travel rather far to find someone to test me and so if there is a treatment they can do something. In the meantime, I will hire a professional mold inspector. I will find a doctor that can at least test me and I will find a lawyer that will help me.

I bought my queen Sleep Number bed in 2001! I loved it for a while, then noticed the mold between the air chamber and foam top. They told me to "air it out" regularly. Over the years, I had problems with settling in the middle of the bed. I could never really get comfortable in it despite shoring up the interior with spare towels to even out the middle.
Yesterday, I went to Walmart and bought an inflatable full airbed for about $60 (one large air chamber with its own adjustable air control) and took out the two smaller Sleep Number chambers (it fit perfectly with the removal of the end baffle). A couple of years ago, I had separately purchased a memory foam top and put this on top. In one night, I have died and gone to heaven! What an easy and inexpensive solution!

We had mold all over our Select Comfort bed about two years ago and trying to get Select Comfort to replace the bed pad was an uphill battle but it happened.
I just recently noticed mold on the pillows we use, which we purchased with the bed from Select Comfort. I called Select Comfort asking them to replace the pillows. The response was no! I asked to speak to a supervisor (no again).
So they won't replace a pillow--the place you lay your head and breathe mold. I have been to the doctor for headaches. This is something that needs to be addressed.

We purchased our sleep number bed in 2002. We have never been thrilled about our sleep number bed; however, we have used it until July 6, 2011. After a return home from a 4-day hospital stay with breathing problems, it was discovered through x-ray that I have a white spot on my right lung -- a tad smaller than a tennis ball -- that is unexplained. I also have asthma. When I returned home from the hospital, we opened our sleep number bed to find mold growing inside the chamber. I have pictures of mold on the 2 air chambers, and 2 different additional foam pads that were a part of the bed.
The inside is about 65% mold. It is the most discussing thing. I feel that both my husband and I have suffered health problems due to sleeping on and inhaling mold for probably, the past nine years. I am very upset that this company was aware of the mold issue and failed to notify customers. There are many recalls in the real world to protect others from injury; and I feel that something needs to be done with this company who looked the other way when costumers were suffering from mold and health issues. I will be notifying my doctor and will start another round of tests to determine how the mold-infected bed may have caused me health related issues. This is from a very upset Danna of Menomonie, Wisconsin.

The foam in the middle broke down quite quickly causing both of us to roll to the middle of the bed, like sleeping in a hole, his is 45 mine is 35, not much of a difference. Also, mold started to grow on the outside foam as well as his side air chamber, weird. Bleach stopped this but has gone back to our old queen size beauty rest that was in the guest room to get a decent night's sleep. We went into the Sleep Number store in Spokane and pretty much ushered out soon as we started to explain our problem. The beauty rest is a 1995. The Sleep Number is a 2005. Hmm, something seems wrong with this picture.

I own 3 Sleep Number Beds. I went into the store with 3 issues: 1. Mold appeared between the air bladder and the foam. 2. The same bed leaks air - doesn't keep the firmness. 3. The screen on one of the hand controls doesn't function. When I started to explain the 1st issue to the sales guy, he cut me off and rudely told me to call customers service (which isn't open on the weekend).
I was hoping they had a solution in the store - spray or pouder to control it. I got upset about his tone and attitude and he threatened to call security. (I'm 65 he's 30 and twice as big as me). When I went to leave the store the other sales guy was blocking the aisle. As I touched him with my fingers to get past, he turned around and struck me in the chest (He's also 30ish). They did all of this in front of other customers.
I never had a chance to get to my other problems. Obviously these guys need some customer service training.

i was taking apart my sleep number bed and there was mold on the pillow top, the air chambers and the lining. I was extremely disgusting and was so bad that it ate through the mattress/pillow top.
I called the select comfort company and they stated they would replace what ever needed to be replaced. They stated that they now have a mold free mattress air chamber foam lining etc. I have received the replacements and will be putting together the bed once again. We shall see. As a result of being exposed to mold my allergies have worsened considerably to the point where anti histamines no longer work and i have terrible allergy attacks where i choke, cough, watery eyes, sneeze and can't breathe. I've had to see my doctor in regards to these allergies they are so severe.

Black mold was our problem with the Sleep Number Bed by Select Comfort it is important that you weigh in your options. They refused to take back our mattress with mold in it that had me choking and sufficating for about 6 months. I found this company that sells the same type of bed made of eurathane and they don't have the mold problems. Why would any company continue to use a product they is going to have mold in it?

I purchaed a Select Comfort Sleep Number bed back in 2000. We purchased the 5000 model. At first I had trouble finding the correct sleep number setting and had trouble with the hole beween chambers. I found that if you use the foam they give you on the outside then it pushes the chambers together and you do not experiance that hole as many describe. Also if your chambers are closer in number then there is no real change as you move closer together at night.
After owning the bed for almost 9 years I read a review about the mold that occurs on the older chambers. I called Select Comfort and they quickly sent me 2 new chambers, new foam and return UPS freight. They also assured me that they have coated these new items with an anti mold coating so it will not occur again. It costs me nothing. Today I installed these with minimal effort. The pump for my bed has never had problems althought I seldom use the pump. Once you find the right setting you just leave it alone. This really is the best bed I have ever had and would easily go purchase another one.

Just found black mold growing under the foam top and on top of both of the air chambers. Purchased in October 2002 and notified Select Comfort today by email. I have allergies to mold and have been to Dr.'s concerning this. My husband has been coughing every night when he lays down in the bed. Just read the comments from others and hope we can reconcile this issue. The foam borders are flimsy as well as the bottom material of the top mattress cover. It has shredded and has holes in it.

We have three Select Comfort air beds. We recently discovered mold in one of them. After contacting Customer Service, they are sending us out new replacement parts at no charge to us. One of our other Select Comfort beds has the sagging effect in the middle of the bed. We have contacted Customer Service, and both things they have told us to do to remedy the problem have not worked, including purchasing new foam inserts. We didn't know other people were also having these problems until we Googled Select Comfort mold and found the Consumer Affairs complaints on Select Comfort air beds. Our third bed so far is doing well.
I had been having allergy symptoms for the last year or so and thought it was something at work, then saw on our Fox 6 News a story about mold in these air beds, so I'm hoping these allergy symptoms are from that and eventually go away.

I purchased a select comfort bed. On the first night we noticed a foul smell coming from the bed.Is it Mold? A very serious problem. Poor customer service. We are very concerned for our health.

We bought a Select Comfort Mattress several years ago and recently opened the bed to check for wear and it is full of mold. They don't make our model and we are having a time getting help from the company. We are going to have to get a whole new bed

Mold developed in Select Comfort bed components. and wife developed asthma (on inhalers starting this year) and I too have breathing difficulties.

After less than 3 years of sleeping on our select comfort bed, we noticed a very bad odor coming from it. We proceeded to take it apart, piece by piece. The sheets were fine, the mattress pad was fine. But when we got down to the zippered comforter, it smelled terrible. Under the comforter, there is a foam pad, which was full of mold and bacteria. It smelled horrible. We are now sleeping on the floor, because we had to discard most of the bed.
Mold and bacteria cannot be removed from the foam pad, and the zippered comforter would fall apart if it was washed. We got burned badly on this one!

Just discovered that our 2 year old bed is contaminated with mold on the air bags and foam cover. My son and his wife have been suffering from unexplained symptoms , until now that we have found the mold! My son has an unidentified golf ball size area showing up on the chest x-ray of his lung. Though tests have proven it not to be cancer thank God, The specialists do not have ANY idea what this is. Called the manufacturer and they are aware that this can happen but will not acknowledge that it is a problem, just say that they have a new improved chamber and they will replace all the neccessary parts of the bed.

We purchased a Select Comfort queen size bed about 5 years ago. After having the bed for about 2 years we opened the pillow top and found mold on the air mattress. We called Select Comfort and they sent us out a new air mattress within a weeks time. Now about 2 years later we reinspected the mattress and found the mold was even worse than the first time (possibly because only the air chambers were replaced and not all the components that came in contact with the chambers).
We notified Select Comfort again and they told us that they re-designed the material to eliminate the mold problem. I don't know what the re-design changes are if it will be a chemical change in the material or what. My big concern now is that my wife is having asthma problems, she has to use her asthma inhaler three to four times a day where she only used to take it on just a very rare occasion.

My husband bought a Select Comfort bed before we were married for about $3000. It was fine until the 30-day money-back return was expired. Since then we have had problems with our bed sloping in the middle. We called Select Comfort and they sent us a piece of foam that was 1 1/2 inches thick. We didn't think that would do much, but we gave it a try.
It didn't do anything, so we called them back. They then sent us a much thicker piece of foam, but it ended up just making a big bump in the middle of our bed. We still feel like we are sloping on either side of the bed.
Next, we were watching the news in our area and they did a story about mold growing on the foam and air chambers. We checked our mattress and we also have a blanket of mold on the foam. We called again and they said the only thing they would do was to send us new foam. They also said they would send us another piece to help with the sloping. They were unconcerned about the mold, and we were told that from now on, we need to air our bed out once a month.
Not only that, but we requested they send a letter out to all the consumers letting them know about the mold problem. Their response was that they aren't going to do that, but all new costumers will be getting better instructions on how to care for their bed.
I have asthma, so sleeping on a moldy bed has been a big problem. We couldn't figure out why I was having so many problems with both my allergies and asthma. We figured it was something in our house. We never guessed that it would be our bed. So we basically have a bed that I can't sleep on. We would like them to cancel our loan with them and take the bed back. They are refusing to do that, insisting instead on replacing the bed with no guarantee that the mold will not grow back. How do we get our debt to them cancelled?

The sleeping comfort of the bed is wonderful. However, we discovered mold on the air mattresses. We live in an arid area of Southern California. Also, the frame cracked and collapsed at the head of the bed. I weigh 100 and my husband 170. He had to make a plywood platform for it. For the money you pay it is a rip off. I would never recommend this bed.

The Select Comfort system allows mold and/or mildew to form on the convoluted foam topper and on the air mattresses. Select Comfort's solution "use a light bleach solution to clean the mattress." It's impossible to clean the foam. Their product is unhealthy for people like me who have allergies to mold/mildew. Also, the dual mattress system is not comfortable when one mattress is harder, you end up rolling to the softer mattress side of the bed. My husband sleeps on it by himself.
The product is grossly overpriced because much of it(about 50%) is composed of "cheap" foam. The foam products breakdown in a short period of time and of course are not covered under the warranty. I can no longer sleep on their mattress. It adversely effect my health (allergies). We have had the bed for about ten years but it is beginning to smell so we will be replacing it with a conventional mattress.
