Rent-A-Center
Rent-A-Center Pays $7 Million to Settle California Complaints
Consumer Complaints

vicki of eaton, OH September 6, 2009

I went in the store to look for a used refrig to purchase at 1:30 09/04/09. I was given a price that I thought was some what high but I bought it anyway and they said they would deliver it that same day. I am going to rent the apart and wasnt there when they came but the owner was. I received no call from rent a center. Today is Sunday, I went to the apt and there was the guts of my refrig against the wall and on the floor but no shell. It appeared it was too wide to get in and they left all but the shell. They told the owner they would call me right away. WELL no call at all. Had they called, I could of done something about it Saturday, now its Sunday and they are closed and closed Monday also for holiday. Dont they need any business, I would say probly not or they would treat their customers better. I am moving in on Wednesday and now cant even get a hold of them til Tuesday to see what can be done. I need a refrigerator. If they could give me a much better deal on a smaller frig I wont be as upset as I am.

I am a customer of Rent-A-Center and have been for the past 2 years. Last week I had to file a complaint with the BBB because of the Customer Service I had received there! After almost 9 years of working @ the Practising Law Institute in NY in Customer Relations I had experienced some questionable tactics with this company. I had to call CS dept and make several complaints which were handled diligently by the regional mgr. Still numerous calls are made to me in the liking of loan sharking telling me that I should be able to contact family members to help pay by bill.

I had the last straw when I had asked my brother Ricardo who resides in Tennessee, to pay my bill. He called and they told him they could not take the payment which he found deplorable by the way he was spoken to. My daughter Faith who works for Chase Bank in Jacksonville, Fla has paid my bill numerous times partially, while I pay the remaining. I have been out of work since 5/05/2009. I have paid my account always. I have never been treated so badly or made to feel badly about my not working. It seems to me that it should not matter as long as my bill is paid! They have no right to eplain in detail to my brother the situation as to which he IS privy to anyway...he found it very unusual to be spoken to as a third party in this matter.

I have suffered severe migrains due to constant harrassing phone calls! I have saved several messages because even my closest friends cannot believe how many calls I have gotten. The district manager Mr Diaz had to rectify them. The store manager Rich is very nice and compliant with the customers need. Evidentially he was out on this day! I owe 25 on my dinette, 300-couch and 600 bedroom set. I love my furniture and I want a resolution. Why is it that I cannot get a printed balance on what I owe? Why is it necessary in this economy to treat people like criminals? Why do I have to be afraid to answer my phone?

A rental agreement was signed using my home phone number, although contact has been made with the account holder at my number, contact at my number is no longer available, myself and the account holder do not live together.I have asked several times written/verbal to not be contacted again. When reps have had contact with the account holder, the still call my number, this is harassment.

Tracee of Cleveland, OH August 30, 2009

I rented a dining-room table from RAC and I had the 90 day same as cash contract. However my bill is due on the 28 of every month. RAC calls me every month on this date to remind me to pay my bill. I was never late on my bill and each time I paid my bill I gave them 3 times over the amount so that I can get my bill paid up. On the 28 of August 2009 I received the call like always I was at work during the time, but as soon as I checked my voice mail i returned the call and spoke with Darnell, I explained to Darnell that I had to do over-time at work and would it be alright if I came in the following day to pay my bill or could I send my brother up to pay it because I would not be off work before they closed. Darnell told me that It was fine that I can come and pay it the following day which was a Saturday. Darnell asked me what time would I be there to pay, I asked what time did they close he said they closed at 6:00, I then said I will be there after 3 but before 6. He stated ok now thats whats up. which was so very unprofessional.

2 hours later I checked my voice mail and RAC left 2 more messages telling me that I needed to come pay my bill. I thought this was strange because I had just made arrangements with Darnell to pay it the following day. I called RAC back and I spoke with Henry. I explained to Henry that I had just made arrangements with Darnell to pay my bill tomorrow. Henry stated o ok. I then told Henry if it was a problem then I can meet them at a McDonalds next to my job to give them the payment. Henry stated No thats Ok I will make note of it that you will be in tomorrow.

However when I arrived to work the following day my co-worker stated that I needed to give RAC a call becase they had been calling there for me all morning. I stepped into the office and called RAC back and asked them why are they constantly calling my place of work when I told them that I would be there to pay my bill after 3:00 when I got off work. He stated that he did not know anything about that and that I needed to come to pay my bill. I asked to speak to the manager and he stated that he was the manager. I explained the situation to him and he stated that it was fine and he will see me before 6:00 today.

When I got off work I went straight there to pay my balance off, I asked for the manager and I told him that I thought it was very unfair and harrassing how they kept calling my home and my place of work when arrangements had already been made for me to pay my bill today. He stated well I dont know who could have told you that because we dont make arrangements for weekend payments. I stated well I spoke with Darnell and then I spoke with Henry. He stated well Darnell and Henry is the same person. I then told him well thats who agreed to the arrangements. He stated well he could not have told you that because he cant make those decisions, I told him I had no reason to lie on his employee and if he check my records he will see that I am never late and that I always pay way over the amount that is owed.

He then stated well I cant see him telling you that. I then said well ok what is my remaining balance he stated 949.53 I asked him how this became to be when the last time I paid my remaining balance was 600 something. This "MANAGER" told me well your bill was due on the 28 and today is the 29 and you are late therefore you are not under the 90day same as cash contract anymore. I explained to the "MANAGER" once again how they agreed on me coming to pay today and if this was the issue then they should have told me that when I spoke with them several times the day before and I would have had my brother or someone to bring the money to you all. And I then told him that I felt that he was being unfair to me as a customer, He then said well you should have paid your bill on time and you wouldn't have had this problem.

I felt that this was totally disrespectful and unprofessional. After I pay RAC the 949.53 that he says that I owe them since he told me I was no longer on the 90day same as cash because of a day late payment in which they agreed to, the total amount I paid for this 1,000 table set will be 1,949.00 which is so unfair to me as a customer. Not only did they harrass me at home and at work, but I feel that they agreed to this 1 day late payment because they knew that this would take me out of the 90day same as cash contract in which I originally agreed to.

i had called to explain the hardship i was going threw but i could make some sort of payment.my wife is disable. it makes it vry hard with bills. well i spoke to the manger chane he was more they happy to help me,very nice man, he even came in on his day off to us.and he did bless him. but on aug 27 09 my wife call me at work, by the way dont allow personel calls.she was crying a man name robert started yelling at her laughing. make a comment about her being disable, she better pay today or else. when the the manager and i already worked something out. she ask to speak to manager he said hes sick, laugh, we never been late before ever i feel he knew she was disable why did he give her a hard time.

LASHONDA of CROSBY, TX August 27, 2009

I went to purchase a bedroom set and she was very rude and unprofessional. I asked for her help and she told me look aorund and when I was ready she would be with me. Meanwhile she was yelling and talking to one of the associates in front of the customers and calling him dumb ass. I think that is very unprofessional and needs to be addressed if Im not mistaken the guy name was Jason. So I just walked out and went some where-else. You don't treat customers like that or talk to associates like that in front of customers especially with that type of language.

Gail of Farmington Hills, MI August 25, 2009

I received a call on 9/24/09 stating that my bill needed to be paid, mind you i just paid them 36.31 then they called again the next week saying my bill is sue, i paid them 72.92 then they tried to say my furniture was due, which was untrue because it was paid up until 10/3/09. This is very stressful for a heart paitent knowing that i pay my bills, and i pay them on time, this is a form of harrassment, and very poor bookkeeping, and poor management on their behalf. I can see if i was trying to get away without paying my bills but i'm not. I tell them to come get the damn computer, they say is that what you really want, yes if i continue to get harrassed they never show up but continue to call saying my bill is late. They call late after hours when the store is closed this is a clear case of harrassment. Also i set up an online account with these people, one month i can get on the next month or week and can't log on something is very wrong with this company here i know the ecomomy is very bad right now but please don't try to take advantage of us poor citizens trying to make a house into a home. They called my niece telling her that my bill is late, which it wasn't

Anita of greenville, GA August 22, 2009

As a former employee of the RAC, I have to comment on all the consumers that feel that they have been done wrong. First of all, if you just paid your bill on time, then collection calls would never have to be made and second, remember the agreement you signed that revealed the cash price and total cost?? well, then why do you always feel you have paid too much for an item WHEN RAC is picking it up for non payment? RAC always reveals the amount of money you could pay, but just because you pay 1,000 extra in LATE fees, you feel you have paid too much.. Newsflash, if you can't afford it, STOP acting like the victim and just return it to the store. There is never an issue when you are on time, but the minute that it becomes a collection issue, there is a million problems with the merchandise and THAT is the reason you can't pay, Really?? Just be an adult about the situation and suck it up!!!!

Devynne of Kennesaw, GA August 21, 2009

about two weeks ago i ordered a mattress, boxspring, and rails in "like new" condition. the customer service was really good, however when the actual merchandise arrived it was well past "like new". it was broken in-but not broken down, and so for the sake of not sleeping on the floor, i signed off on it. in the time gone by-i had not been able to figure out what the strange odor in my room was, and today-when i went to wash my bed linens, it hit me like a mack truck!!! mold or mildew coming off the mattress! i had looked past the cosmetic tears and scrapes as long as the cushioning wasn't coming out, and the springs weren't stabbing me-but mold is a serious issue! and to think the 90day buy-out for these items is a little over 400 dollars! seriously, one could buy a brand new for that price.
