Consumer complaints about Contaminated Spinach

Fresh vegetables are good for you, but not when they're contaminated with dangerous e. coli bacteria, as the poor souls below will testify.

Janice of Eaton Rapids MI (09/23/06)
I purchased fresh bagged spinach within the time frame suggested by recent E.coli outbreak reports, and ate it with washed farmstand tomatoes with sald dressing. Within 24 hours, I became violently ill, required immodium, which was not very helpful. I was sick for about three days, and the laundry really built up. All the symptoms described in your description applied. I did not visit a doctor for lack of insurance. Also, at the time, I thought it might be some kind of food intolerance. This occurred in August/September. I have a receipt for the spinach, which was purchased at Aldi's, a discount grocery store.

If agribusinesses are using contaminated irrigation lines or are not properly providing for the hygiene needs of their field workers, it would appear that there is criminal negligence that they ought to compensate their customers for. Although I did not wind up in the hospital, I think I went through enough to deserve some kind of compensation.

Bill of Southbury CT (09/21/06)
Our family made stuffed fillet of sole florentine using Oceans Cuisine Spinach Florentine stuffing. All but one of us got sick shortly after eating. I think the stuffing is what made us sick because one of my sons had his fish plain broiled and did not get sick like the rest of us.

As a result of eating the spinach florentine stuffing we had typical symtoms of food posioning diareha, vomiting, and sweats. I have no interest in a legal action aganist Ocean Cuisine. However, I would hope Ocean Cuisine would be visited by the FDA, State, and Local inspectors to make sure they are operating legaly - to avoid this happening to another family.

Allan of Redlands CA (09/18/06)
I consumed two large, piled high plates of Earthbound Farm organic spinach for two days, August 26 and 27, 2006. I then became bloated in my back, hips and abdomen on August 27-30. My back pain was so severe that I thought I was going to die. I was also nauseated and constipated, then got diarrhea. Unfortunately, I had to go to work August 28, the first day of classes, in my job as a professor, and when I did I could barely walk.

My swelling was so bad that my pants looked like they were going to rip apart. I was able to work every day that week because of my dedication to my job, but barely. I did not go to the hospital but should have done so. I am concerned about long term damage to my health, such as kidney damage.

Alex of Piedmont CA (09/17/06)
E Coli infection August 30--to--Sept 3 after eating raw Earthbound Farm's Spinach. Pediatrician Treated with Cipro antibiotics after 5 days of non-stop Diarrhea. Suffered extreme pain and dehydration
