Why Does College Cost So Much?

Eloise of Alpha NJ (03/21/07)
For some unknown reason, Sallie Mae has decided that my loan payment was short 14. I checked my statement and see several strange charges, and late fees. I attempt to communicate with collections to resolve this 14 debt. I make 3 payments, and now am 2 months ahead. Yet I receive collection calls 8 times each day. My cosigner receives at least 6 each day. Collections speaks to us without providing a name or any info, and now is speaking directly to anyone who answers the phone, without asking if it is me or my cosigner. This is illegal. This is harrassment.

I have been dealing with Sallie Mae for over 7 years now. I was an undergraduate for 6 years trying to finish my degree, which I finally received last year. Some would say that's exciting, but because of Sallie Mae, it's been a complete nightmare!!! I had dealt with their CSR's in the past with no problems, but suddenly now that it's time to start talking repayment I can't find ONE English speaking person at their call center! Because I wasn't able to find a job to pay my very high monthly payment, I was hoping they would actually work with me, but it's been the complete opposite.

I've had to put my loans in forbearance twice now and that process alone takes about 4 to 5 calls to 3 different places. At one point, I was dealing with three people, one at the Servicing Center, and two in the forbearance office each of whom sent me different forbearance forms through email, not to mention that they were very generic documents. One of them didn't even have Sallie Mae anywhere on it!!! It's as though their offices have no communication between them whatsoever. You call one person, and they give you one option, but when they transfer you to someone else, somehow that offer is no longer available. And trying to get Economic Hardship...forget it.

I only make about 1300 a month, yet they actually expect me to make a 500 good faith payment in addition to the 150 dollar fee. If I had that kind of money, don't you think I would be making my payments as scheduled! There has not been one person who has adequately answered any of my concerns regarding this issue, and I am beyond PO'd. I will never understand what happened to Sallie Mae's customer service or how it could have changed so drastically between 1999 and today.

My major complaint is their non-English speaking reps who don't understand your questions half the time, and then end up transferring you to someone who has no clue why you were referred to them. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's having to deal with this mess, and I'm really sorry I ever agreed to any of Sallie Mae's services. I've already requested the contact information for corporate offices, but who knows if anyone will actually provide me with that information. If anyone else has corporate information, please post it. I scoured the site for actual contact info, but not surprisingly it's not available.

Sallie Mae purchased my loan from EdAmerica and illegally placed my loan in default. I was attending college at the time. They used Pioneer Collection Agency to harrass me every evening. I even faxed them my forbearance from my previous lender and my college schedule. They just laughed at me and even broke the The Privacy Act Of 1974 by express mailing me another students personel loan information. i still have this persons information and I wonder what happen to mine. I did see some strange activities on my credit report shortly after this event that I had deleted. I did not believe them until they reported this illegal default to all three credit bureaus.

This caused me to have a nervous breakdown. I did not finish school. I cannot get decent rates on cars and forget buying a house. They caused me so much economic hardship that all my loans went in default because of them. I feel so used and there collection agency is rude and disrespectful. I still have the documents from all my claims. If someone can help me to fight them. I would appreciate it. I have all my evidence locked in a vault. They caused me alot of mental and financial hardship. I was going to school and was doing fine until they purchase my loan from EdAmerica. I never had any of my loans go into default. I was very responsible with my loan until they took what life I had away from me. I did report them to my local State Attorneys Office last week.

I took out a student loan for 9000. Because a payment did not reach them so they said on time my loan was sold to another company which is owned by Sallie Mae. They increased the amount of the loan to 12,000. A few years later I was able to transfer part of the loan onto a credit card and paid off the original 9000. Since that time the company has been sending a bill each month saying that I don't owe a payment until 2007.

I recently received a payment book and have found out that I now owe over 1000 in accrued interest and that they are charging me payments and interest over 9 years at a cost of over 16,000 to pay off 3000. I think that is criminal.
