National City Bank

Deborah of Sebastian, FL January 18, 2009

Deborah of Sebastian FL (01/18/09)
I will relate two stories of abuse by a lender and a credit card company: 1. National City Bank In 2002 I took out a Home Equity Line of Credit for 15,000 (with my ORIGINAL mortgage holder) which I used on occasion and ALWAYS paid earlier than due and more than was expected. National City took over my bank 2 years ago. Last month they notified me that my equity line has been suspended due to the market value of my home being lowered to 96K (that is rubbish!) and if I objected I had 3 days from date of letter.

However the date they sent it out was 5 days after it was dated and rec'd 7 days later! This is so wrong on so many levels. My house value did not drop from 175K to 96K in 2 years; the date of their letter was a sham; and, most importantly, how do they have a legal right to negate my contract?? I did not sign a new contract with them and I did not negate the terms of my contract, therefore they should not have the right to arbitrarily suspend my equity line of credit! I am 65 years old and this is the only resource I have in the event of a home or personal emergency.

Should any emergency arise, I have no way to pay for anything and subsequently could end up losing my house as well. This is a predatory practice when they get into financial trouble and make me pay the consequences. I have never done anything to warrant this action and they are trying to justify their misdeed by lying about my property and their pre-dated notifying letter.

My husband and I have had an account since 2006 with National City. We have had nothing but problems with them from the begining. We open the account with a very large amount of money and they wanted to place a hold on the account for 10 days. In not dealing with a bank, the fact they will run your debit card through if you are in negative standing is wrong.

At this time our account is overdrawn we have tried to make arrangements to close the account. The manager at stated that we can not close the account until the balance is paid in full, as the account is receiving a 8.00 charge daily. My husband stated that we would have not had this issue if we were able to bring in the money before the items were to post. Per prior experinces with National City when a transaction is pending, it does not matter if you bring in the money or not you have the overdraft fee. The manager said well if we had brought in the money we would have not had the overdraft fees. The double sided stories with this company. I cannot in my right mind pay money to an account for them to constantly charge me.

In the past year, the money has been very tight causing banking issues. With the inability to get the money in to pay the pending items prior to the overdraft charges has caused a large debt. And now the consiquence is an account that the bank will not close, take payments, and is charging money every day.

Just noticed after I ordered parts for my refigrator that this bank charge 2% on the dollar amount because it was shipped from out side the USA. They have done this twice this month. I thought we had free trade, not including the dollar devaluation, we get charge from a bank for our own money we spent for imports. Just like Ceo's getting extra greedy even tho they got billions from tax payers threw the goverment! How am I going to know if being shipped from here (USA) or off shore,no company tells you that info. Granted I always try to buy USA products, BUT the company's don't tell you if its instock or their shipping it in over sea's!

Grace of Dearborn MI (12/21/08)
On 12/01/2008, I sent out several payments but I accidentally sent out one extra payment worth 300. After I noticed the extra payment, I went to the bank and I deposited 1300 check in order to avoid overdraft fees. The next day, I noticed that the bank actually charged me 10 x 34 in overdraft fees. Instead of charging me for one extra payment, they actually charged me 34 for every small purchases that I did during the weekend. (1.80, 3.17, 3.07, 4.65, and so on).

I called the bank and I spoke with the bank manager. I explained to her the situation. She was so mean and she wouldn't waive any of the overdrafts. My husband went to another bank and he explained the situation. The bank manager was nice and he was about to waive the fees; however, when he read that the bank manager in Dearborn wrote a comment denying the waiver, he said that he can't do anything about it unless the lady approves it. So, he called her, and she refused. Afterward, I called back. She told me I see you went to a different bank. You didn't believe me when I told you that I won't allow you to have a waiver??? It seems that she took it so personal and she acted so unprofessionally.

340 in overdraft fees for one extra payment is ridiculous. I make 616 every 2 weeks. So, by taking 340, it feels like she stole from me more than 1 weeks worth of work. It is not fair especially now, so close to the holiday. I am very upset. I had to borrow some money in order to cover the remaining bills for the month.

I have had an account with National City Bank since 2001, although twice the account went dormant from inactivity while I was away at college and opened an account at a closer institution. About eight months ago, I reopened my old National City account since I was living in my old hometown again, and my experience with the bank has not been particularly positive. Transactions appear and clear in an order that makes absolutely no sense, and apparently OVERNIGHT I was hit with not one but TWO overdraft charges that I simply cannot rationalize.

There was approximately 405.37 in my account. My rent, which I paid last week, finally posted yesterday (397), along with a 4.09 charge my finance made at a gas station and 4.00 I charged debit at a grocery store (I intentionally charged that amount because I knew it would leave something in the account, albeit .28-- National City claims no minimum balance)...twenty-eight cents is sad, but the account wasn't empty. However, last night suddenly a transaction from I DON'T KNOW WHEN appeared on the account with a date for the next day. The account showed a negative balance, and I was bewildered.

Worse, when I woke up this morning, everything but that random 7.44 transaction had cleared, and we were hit with TWO overdraft fees. Worse still, that transaction was showing again TOMORROW's date. I am not blind, nor am I stupid. Last night, after bank hours, my account had a whopping twenty-eight cents, but a positive twenty-eight cents. That included the rent, and the 4.00 and 4.09 charges. How then could I be charged two overdraft fees? I do not understand. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the computer doesn't decide to consider my check the straw that broke the camel's back, or I'm going to lose my apartment. Outrageous, considering I've always had my rent and bills paid on time.

Now, we're out at least 72, if not an apartment, which might not seem like much for many people-- but we budget very carefully, and 72 is going to kill our grocery bill this week. I wish I could make sense of how this bank functions, but thus far I'm at a loss. My fiance's company, as a result of the current economic strain, has cut its employees' hours back to a four-day work week, so we're already working with less money. I am seven months pregnant, thus no longer working, and we have an 18 month-old daughter. We can't afford this!
