What is Jackson Hewitt?

Jackson Hewitt offers both do-it-yourself tax preparation software and in-person tax services with tax professionals. Pricing varies depending on which service you choose, but both options come with maximum refund and accuracy guarantees. You can add on audit support for an additional cost.

If you're facing IRS issues such as back taxes or property liens, Jackson Hewitt's tax resolution Services can help. You get a free consultation, and then pricing for these additional services varies based on your specific needs. Tax resolution services are available in all states except Minnesota and New Hampshire. Additionally, it cannot offer the state offer in compromise (OIC) service to clients in Illinois.

How does Jackson Hewitt work?

If you choose to file your taxes online, the company will guide you through the process, offering free, live chat support if you need it. You can switch between desktop and mobile filing, so you can file anywhere. Jackson Hewitt also offers W-2 downloads from your employer to make filing faster and will alert you if there is an error that needs to be addressed.

For in-person filing, you make an appointment at a Jackson Hewitt location and bring your tax documents. There is also an option to drop off your tax documents, and the tax pro will schedule a 15-minute call later on to go over everything.

Jackson Hewitt services

Instead of offering different tiers like its competitors, Jackson Hewitt offers two main tax preparation services: in-person and online. For online tax prep, it is a flat fee for all tax situations.

For in-person services, customers can choose between visiting a Jackson Hewitt building or a Walmart location that has a Jackson Hewitt office. For either of these locations, there is also a drop-off-and-go option, where you make an appointment to drop off your tax documents without needing to make a return visit. Your tax pro will schedule a 15-minute call, and once everything is finalized, you will be able to e-sign your return.

Jackson Hewitt pricing

Jackson Hewitt charges a flat $25 fee for online filing for any tax situation. This fee includes both federal and state returns and is accurate as of the time of publishing.

Additionally, you can choose to add on audit support for an additional $29.95 and opt to pay with your refund for an extra $24.95.

In-person filing starts at $65 at Walmart, but you need to inquire at one of the locations to get the exact cost for your tax situation.

Jackson Hewitt FAQ

Does Jackson Hewitt offer guarantees?

Customers are entitled to a maximum refund guarantee, 100% accuracy guarantee and satisfaction guarantee. Some of these guarantees have time limits, though, so be sure to read the company’s policy on guarantees. Guarantee coverage can also differ for in-person versus online filing.

Does Jackson Hewitt offer refund advances?

Yes, some customers are eligible for up to a $4,500 tax refund advance, depending on their expected refunds. However, these refund advance options are usually only available from January to February of that tax filing year as an incentive for early filers.

How long does it take to get a refund with Jackson Hewitt?

If you e-file a complete and accurate return and choose to have your refund deposited by direct deposit, then you should receive your refund from the IRS within two weeks. Different filing options and refund selections can add an additional two to four weeks to this timeline.

How do I get a copy of my return with Jackson Hewitt?

You can get a copy of your return either in person or online, depending on how you filed. If you filed at a location that uses the Electronic Signature & Storage (ESS) system (i.e., you electronically signed your return), then you should be able to access your return through your Jackson Hewitt account. If you didn’t electronically sign your return, you can request a copy in person with proper identification.

Still have questions?

Is Jackson Hewitt legit?

Jackson Hewitt is a legitimate tax company that has been around for over 40 years. It has helped customers file over 60 million returns. It has weekend and night hours, as well as live chat support, so it is possible to reach a tax pro no matter how you choose to file.

They are one of the worst companies to file the tax especially if your case including more than 5-6 different documents to consider for tax filing. From timing perspective, unfortunately I have two bad experience wasting 2 months of my time while I submitted my documents end of Feb, they reach out to me 10 days before due days and confirm they cannot handle my tax due to complexity while they can inform me much earlier. Please do not waste your time and money as they only handle the simplest case while if your case is little more cmplex, I highly recommend paying 50-100 dollar more to a professional tax expert (not Jackson hewitt team), they will help you to save few hundred to few thousand dollar in your tax return.

I can not get anyone there to help me resolve the fact that they double dipped me on fees. The process was sloppy and unprofessional from start to finish. DO NOT USE JACKSON HEWITT. You will be extremely disappointed and like my experience they will bill you twice and then never return calls.

I was a returning customer from the 2024 return. I was very satisfied, so I went back this year, 2026, and was promised a returning-customer price of $175. "Oh, no, that stopped last week. We're not doing that anymore." I wound up paying more than double that amount after waiting an hour past the time of my appointment. In addition, I had to return twice to their office in Walmart to finally get it done. When I got there, I was informed that their printer didn't work! I wanted a copy of a receipt for the invoice and also a link for my return, neither of which was sent to me. I called the office at Jackson 4 times to no avail. AND I have to say, if I conducted my court reporting business in the same manner, I would never work in this town again.

Oh, and all the responses I received from what I will call "the back of the house" were insane, bordering on comical if it wasn't happening to me. The best example is: I talked with the receptionist and asked to transfer me to Niki (tax preparer and supervisor) and I was asked if I had her extension. I said, "No, don't you have it there?" She says, "Yes, but I can't transfer you unless you have it." Now, let me get this straight, "You have the extension number but you won't transfer me?" She says, "Yes, you have to tell me what it is." REALLY? And the comedy of errors just keep on comin' as of 4/16/2024. I have never received proof of an e-file, nor a receipt for the invoice.

I finally got in touch with the IRS directly, who confirmed that, Yes, they did have my e-file from the 15th. Now, I ask you: Why couldn't Jackson send me a confirmation? Do I need an extension number for that, as well? Needless to say, the "back of the house" needs a policy and procedures manual and a "How to treat a PAYING customer manual." I will NEVER use this company again. I had my returns done in Orlando by a large financial group and, A, they didn't charge that much, and I also received a disk with my return and, B, someone would actually have the information that you needed, AND they'd pick up the phone! What a concept. I am filing a Form 14157 (complaint form) with the IRS. The IRS couldn't even believe it! Karen M.

Last year, 2024, I tried to do our property taxes. The rep did not know how to do it so I did not get it done. I had my appointment for taxes for 2025 taxes and set up an appointment to come back and do both property taxes 2024 and 2025. The rep completed my 2025 return and said he ran out of time and I had to make another appointment to do 2024. Came in today and Jacob was able to get the 2024 return done. He sent over the approval on payment to Hanna.

NO response even though it showed she had looked at his request. I had to wait 4 and 1/2 hours trying to pay to complete my return and NO RESPONSE even though Jacob tried for hours to get a response. I ended up leaving without my return being filed. I will NEVER REFER anyone to go to Jackson Hewitt! I wasted 4 and 1/2 hours waiting to pay for filing and Hanna decided not to respond to Jacob's many requests. Jacob was the best to work with and did nothing wrong. Now I am trying to do the filing on my own and it will not let me as I get a message saying I cannot file because I have to wait 72 hours.

Went into Walmart Fairbanks to do taxes. 10:45 am 4/15/26. One person was waiting and I got behind him. The lady working for Jackson Hewitt was helping another man. I went over to the booth because there was someone now waiting on the other side of the booth and another. Two ladies were waiting as well. I was talking to a lady sitting in the chair about who was next. Jackson Hewitt rep. Helped the next person which was suppose to be myself. So I figured OK I'll go after him...

So while I explained this to the lady sitting in the chair Jackson Hewitt joined in and I don't know what they said but it escalated and Jackson Hewitt said she would not help her and that lady walked off angry. I got back in line and said to other lady that they should have one designated line. Jackson Hewitt rep. Was walking by came back and said that no services applied to me too. "Anybody else want to argue with me!?" the Rep. said!? We were not arguing in the first place it escalated after the Jackson Hewitt rep. Stepped in. I've had my taxes done by Tammy, (who wasn't there today) for years. I couldn't believe how this Jackson Hewitt Rep. Handled herself. Very unprofessional. I won't go back there again.

I wouldn’t go in expecting those “$49–$149” promos to actually reflect what you’ll pay—my experience with Jackson Hewitt was the opposite. Last year, I filed with H&R Block and paid $312, so when I saw Jackson Hewitt advertising a much lower promo for new customers, it felt like an easy way to save money. Unfortunately, that’s not how it played out.

My first appointment was canceled the same week it was scheduled, which left me scrambling to find another time that worked around two jobs. The rescheduled appointment was at a Walmart, which I would not recommend. There was very little privacy—it felt like we were basically out in the open, with customers and even store employees interrupting to ask random tax questions during my appointment.

What really surprised me was the cost. My 2025 tax situation was almost identical to the previous year (just one additional W-2), yet I was quoted $650 to file. That’s more than double what I paid with H&R Block. I felt confused, frustrated, and, honestly, misled by the advertised promo. The preparer told me the promotion had already ended, which was never made clear when I booked. She did get a $100 discount, but even then, the total was far higher than expected.

I tried to resolve things afterward by calling customer service, which only made things worse. My first call dropped after 20 minutes on hold. On the second attempt, I was transferred multiple times, dealt with poor audio, was placed on hold without explanation, and received dismissive responses—including being told that customers typically find them cheaper than H&R Block. When I expressed that nothing seemed to be getting resolved, the supervisor simply hung up. Overall, this was a frustrating and disappointing experience—from scheduling to pricing transparency to customer service. I won’t be using Jackson Hewitt again, and based on my experience, I would recommend sticking with H&R Block if you’re looking for more consistent pricing and better service.

I usually file my own taxes as they simple. However last year I received a non-taxed inheritance and was unsure I pre-paid sufficient tax so I went in-person to Jackson Hewitt office at 43805 Schoenherr Rd, Sterling Heights MI. The tax pro was nice, but she REPEATEDLY told me how easy my taxes were. Versus discussing my taxes, she mentioned her MIL ran the office so was her boss, offered to sell me a puppy, told me about her boyfriend, told me her mobile home burned down, etc etc etc. But the worst was constantly hearing how "simple" my taxes were.

I felt ridiculous for paying nearly $500 for in-person service. I really felt ridiculous when months later receiving an IRS letter stating my JacksonHewitt tax was incorrectly filed. IRS INCREASED MY REFUND BY $925.00. I have tried to reach out for my money-back guarantee + 10% but have not received anything. Can someone please respond?? Receipt **. ** Please contact me at **. When they finally did the paperwork, the state said it was past the deadline and they would not give me the refund. The manager had me fill out the paperwork to file a claim, so the company would pay the claim, due to it was their error. I submitted it back to her. That was over a year ago. They still have done nothing and the manager won't talk to me on the phone. The preparer called his district manager to request to amend the return. He couldn’t get an hold of her. He didn’t have any appointments until the afternoon. So he made a executive decision to fix the error to which he said was his error (I paid for insurance they offered in case THEY made any error). Go figure!

Just after he finished uploading the corrected return. His district manager called him back. He explained to her what happened and it was his error. He told her I was sitting in front of him. The district manager began to lecture him with me hearing the exchange saying he was wrong to fix it without permission. She wanted to cancel the correction because those are not to be done at this time. That he needs to concentrate only on new customers, not corrections. My preparer tried to reason with her and I ended up leaving with a statement that she was putting it on load. Not knowing what that met I tried calling her several times for several days leaving messages getting no calls back. Is was a $1000 Difference on what to pay. I don’t know which amount to pay. Because I don’t know the real status of my return at this time. No stress here.🤪

I went back and forth about posting this, but Jackson Hewitt cost me roughly $1,700 due to a mistake they made on my 2023 tax return. I didn’t discover the error until 2025. As soon as I was notified, I took the return back to them. They filed an amendment, and I ended up owing a little over $1,000. They didn’t charge me for the amendment since it was their error.

Once the IRS processed the amended return, I was hit with late fees totaling about $1,700. I contacted Jackson Hewitt expecting them to make this right. After months of being passed around and ignored, they sent me less than $300 for a mistake that cost me far more. No one higher up ever responded, despite multiple attempts. They also claimed I hadn’t purchased some “guarantee” they offer—something that was never mentioned to me in the first place. In the end, I was left holding the bag for their error. This was a significant financial hit, and I would not recommend this company to anyone.

This was our first time trying this company. Should have turned around and walked out as soon as we walked in!!! The "office" was run down, and frankly, scary! Signs on the front door about all doors to attached apartments being locked. Seemed as though there was an eviction going on. The (one) lady working was really nice, but had no idea that she had an appointment. Didn't ask us any questions when we walked in, we had to start it all off, and finally got to the part that we had an appt. We booked the 1 hour appt and assumed we would leave with our taxes completed. NOPE. She need to hold onto everything and leave it for the next person, after telling us that she had been sitting there alone for 2 days until we came in.

We spoke about the fee, "$149 OR LESS, for all situations, no matter how complex." Not true. She said the State could be 100s of dollars. Reluctantly, we left everything. Got a call next day from someone else telling us that it could be up to $900!! I quoted the ad from the internet and she said that their sign doesn't say that. We went in to collect our paperwork and I showed her the ad online. She had no idea it was there and told me it wasn't true. Hmmmm. We will be going elsewhere and NEVER going back there again!

The fees actually charged for completing my simple W2 was/are ridiculous. I was told from my understanding, that since I was a new customer $100 would be deducted from my initial fee, which would have been $160, which I felt was still too high for a simple tax return. But they ended up charging me a total of over $300, saying that $54 of it was/is charged by my bank for direct deposit. I contacted my bank rep, and she informed me that they have not received any direct deposit fee from JH for depositing my taxes, and I also observed no such transaction fee from my bank account ledger. My bank rep also shared with me that a bank associate just went through the same thing with the same JH service.

When I had asked about such deposit fees with the JH rep I was told to take it up with my bank, which I did and my ban rep said they would never charge me a deposit fee, especially from the IRS and she suggested that I report them to at least the Better Business Bureau, which I have due to the principle of feeling like something is wrong because the math just ain't mathing. I mean, how are they charging me over $300 for a simple tax return? How is it that my bank doesn't know anything about a $54 fee for a direct deposit? If I had known that they were going to charge me over $300 for a simple tax return, I would have gone somewhere else or attempted to do it myself.

I find the JH, where I had my taxes done, located in Walmart, to be suspicious of overcharging for their tax services. And normally, I do an online research review on businesses, but for some reason, I wanted to and did trust this service to not scam me in any way. Well, I've learned to make sure to perform online review research before doing business with any business, period. I also discovered that JH has lawsuits about the same and similar business transactions. Sadly, people are out here doing the most, taking from others in any way they can to line their pockets.

The facility was not clean. Looked like it had not been cleaned or vacuumed for some time. There was no privacy from anyone sitting in the lobby area. It was all open. They could hear everything that was discussed. Talk about HIPPA violation. Afterwards, me & my husband had received a survey from Jackson Hewitt. We responded back to it & told them exactly what we thought. Within a few minutes. We received a phone call from the regional manager, & they wanted to know why we gave them the low marks on the survey.

We told the regional manager just want we thought. My husband stated that is also very unprofessional to have a facility set up like this especially with the privacy that is needed. The regional manager did not like to hear what we had to say. So she stated that they are cancelling our tax filing. We were like.... Really? Your kidding us? The regional manager stated, no I am not. You are cancelled. My husband mentioned to the manager that they send out a survey & want to know our experiences. But when we give it. They don't like it so they cancel you. Something is definitely very wrong with this picture. Not good practices to say the least. Would never suggest anyone to use Jackson Hewitt.

Scheduled 1 1pm appt. Didn’t get seen until 1230 because the 12pm appt didn’t show up until 1250. Showed him all my forms and he told me you don’t need to fill out the local tax form. They send it in case you want to fill it out. Told him I was there to pay him to fill out that form and he refused.

Went in for my taxes and they charged me $750 and I have went there for years and now I'm going to go somewhere else. That price is crazy and way too much for taxes fee and service. I liked them at first but seems that the more you get back the more they want and I'm a single dad that needed that money so I'm not happy there.

My Name is Tony W. I used Jackson Hewitt for the first time this year. Let me tell you it was a mistake. I had 1 W-2 and A 1095. The girl that helped me was just a relay person on her PC to someone else. I was told because this was my first time using JH I would be getting $100.00 off for the tax prep. I was told the prep was going to be $539.00 minus the $100.00. At the time I felt like that was way too much to be charged but I went forward with it. Six weeks later I got my return, not direct deposit like I was told it would be but by a paper check instead but I heard on a Radio ad that they were only charging $149.00 or less for a simple return so I felt like I was overcharged and when I called customer service about it I was told that's too bad and there isn't anything they can do about it so needless to say I will not be using JH ever again and I hope this review will help someone else from making the mistake I did with a less than honest company.

We were supposed to get a little federal back. Not much but anything helps. Ended up getting $0. I feel I was lied to. I will recruit and stand out to protest wherever there's a Jackson Hewitt. I know plenty of stay at home moms who would agree y'all lie and charge entirely to much. I'm having to go to H&R block to have them go over my taxes. I should have just gone there to begin with. Y'all got paid tho that's for sure. Lying crooks is what you should rename yourselves. I will be sure to spread the word that no one should do business with you. I would give a negative 5 star if I could. I have learned from my mistake and will make sure no one else makes the same mistake I did.

I went to Jackson Hewitt two years ago I was charged $800 for all their hidden fees and everything and only got back $100 when I asked the lady about all the fees to explain them to me. She was reluctant to do so I was penalized for not having a bank account when I did have a bank account and worse they disabled me shortly after that and since I don’t work, the family member I live with is allowed to claim me on his taxes-Jackson Hewitt gals keep calling telling me he can’t and that I need to come in and file my taxes with them basically, they’re making threats to me. They call five and six times a day even though I’ve told them I’m on their do not call list and they just get a different office to keep calling me and threatening me. I don’t recommend using them ever they rip people off and they can’t explain why they have to charge $800 to get your taxes filed when that’s ridiculous.

I contacted the IRS personally and was told don’t use them and that they basically ripped me off, and that since I am disabled that I don’t have to file taxes, but that my family member that I live with could claim me, regardless of what Jackson Hewitt said-he filed directly with the IRS and if he has questions, he speaks directly with the IRS not with a bunch of thieves like Jackson Hewitt. I don’t recommend using them unless you wanna get threatened and ripped off.

I'm 68 years old and filed my taxes on January the 21st of this year. This young guy doing the taxes called his supervisor four times during the process of processing my taxes. I was given a fake American Express card Serve card where the guy doing my taxes told me to sign the back of it and gave me a copy of my taxes and said my money would be on there in 2 hours. Continue to go and try to get money off of a fake card. This was a fake card and the guy knew it when he gave it to me. 2 weeks later I got one in the mail. Still no money on my card.

The fact that company would give you a fake American Express Serve card tells me that American Express does not know who they're dealing with. Why would you tell a senior citizen that's blind and that is disabled that they have their money on a fake American Express card. I think fraudulent charges need to be charged to this company. I don't think you need to deal with this company if they're giving out the wrong information. Still waiting on my taxes which I'll probably not see the money. IRS says it's been processed. It should be on the card. No money is on the card.

I have serious concerns about American Express Serve. Why would you do business with the company that gives out your fake cards. I did. I thought that was against the law to give a fake credit card that says American Express Serve on it and tell people that sure American Express card. That's fraudulent and needs to be reported to the better business bureau and you need to be shut down she didn't tax people cards like this that are fake cards. I think that they took advantage of me because I'm disabled, blind and they kept my money.
