Lewis of Greenville, SC, writes:

We have a mobile home loan with this company and from Day One it has been nothing but trouble. We do not own the land that the home is on, so noone will talk to us about refinancing to move to land that we now own. a few months ago I accidentally found out that they are now Conseco not Greentree. Nothing was sent to inform us of this.

We have tried to get the payoff on our house but we get "We cannot give that information over the phone, so we will mail it to you." That was over 6 months ago when they were still Greentree. Now that Conseco has taken over we only get automated services where we have to leave a voice mail and then they cant't reach us so they leave a message. I know that other companies such as Greenpoint do give out the the payoff information over the phone. Now I can't find Conseco or Greentree on the internet, I thought I could access the info myself.

They constantly call us at all hours, telling us to pack our stuff and be ready to get out because they claim that we are so far behind. We make a payment then a few days later we get a bill saying that we owe twice the amount that we just paid. They give us a story that because we did not put the account number on the money order(don;t pay by check anymore) that they can not find the payment.

Ronald of Los Alamos, NM, writes:

I purchased a new mobile home in 1988 and was financed through Greentree via the home dealer. This home was bought under the assumption that there would be a double income from my wife and I and that making the payments would be no problem.

Unfortunately my wife became ill and was unable to work. This left me to struggle and make the payments. These payments were juggled with other incoming bills (utilities, insurance, medical bills, etc.) and I would sometimes fall behind the due date.

Eventually, this became a dire problem. I contacted Greentree to negotiate some sort of arrangement to bring the account into an updated and current status. Greentree refused to negotiate and I asked them what recourse I had.

They replied, "You could go to the local Salvation Army and beg". Needless to say this was not an acceptable response.

I eventually had to file bankruptcy. This debt to Greentree was discharged under Chapter 7 of the US Bankruptcy Court in 1995. In 1995 Greentree sent the IRS a statement claiming that because I filed bankruptcy that I benefited monetarily to the tune of $20,000+.

It is now five years later and Greentree is still reporting to credit reporting agencies that my account is in arrears even though that debt was discharged under the bankruptcy proceedings. Not that I am entirely innocent here, but I hold Greentree responsible for me losing my home and for wrecking my credit. I am now in the process of hiring a lawyer to rectify this matter.

The bankruptcy attorney who handled Ronald's filing would probably be best equipped to handle this, since he or she should have all the information already on file.
