Consumer Complaints

BlueHippo, based in Baltimore, claims to be "the nation's leading direct response merchandise lender," whatever that might be. It advertises heavily through infomercials, always a warning sign.

So what does BlueHippo do? Its Web site says it "helps consumers purchase and finace the products they want and need, inidependent of their credit history." As far as we can tell, it sells plasma TVs, computers and other merchandise through a pay-in-advance credit plan.

To be blunt, it sells stuff to people with bad credit. Its Web site states that customers pay $99 down and make 13 weeks (that's weeks, not months) worth of payments. After that, the merchandise is sent to them and the payments continue until the purchase is finally paid off.

Is this a good deal? Who knows? It's very hard to know what the real cost of the merchandise is, as it's not very clearly disclosed. If it's like most such schemes, the products are priced at full retail and then some, and the fees and interest rates aren't immediately apparent.

On its Web site on March 17, BlueHippo was offering a desktop computer for $99 down and $39.99 per week. It's not immediately apparent how long the payments last but it's quite likely most consumers could find a similar computer for a lot less if they saved their money and paid cash.

But don't take our word for it. Here are some of the BlueHippo customers we've heard from ...

Anthony of pinole, CA January 23, 2010

In the middle of the year of 2008, a call was made to my cell phone by a Blue Hippo Representative. They set me up on a payment plan for 100 to start the service (initiation fee) for a laptop that I wanted. I started making payments roughly thirty to forty dollars every two weeks and so forth. Clearly reached the mark of the 7 consecutive payments that they needed in order for me to recieve my computer, then it seemed to just take longer from there.

The year 2009 came and I was ok. Maybe Ill jus cancel the financing and since I cant get a refund on the 500 dollars, it can just post online as a store credit. I finally decided I wanted a 26'in LCD monitor which was 426.00 taxes and other fees led it to be roughly 600+. I cleared my account to make sure it was paid in late November of 2009.

I called periodoically to check on the status of my order to find that it hasnt processed and I would be informed by a representative for when it was ready to be sent. I never recieved a call, and everytime I call them, their number shuts off in the middle or hangs me up.

Its January 2010. Ive been dealing with this for a very long time. The Tv was suppose to be a Christmas present and now its nothing. I never recieved my Expensive TV, cash back, or even a phone call, and when I go to the website, Its not available. This has causes alot of mental stress, especially because there are economic issues in the world and every dollar counts. Im distorted.

BERNARD of POSEN, MI January 20, 2010

Kurt of Paradise,, CA January 18, 2010

I acctivated a contract on 10/2/06 with Blue Hippo. I was to receive a Deluxe Desktop 2006 Computer: 256 Megs of Ram, 2.66G Intel Processor, 80G hard drive, 17"color monitor, CD Rom drive w CD Burner, Microsoft Windows XP Software Bundle, plus 700.00 worth of additional software Bundle, TV and Printer Bundle, and a 300.00 Rebate refund check from the Total Pd 2,203.48 by contract due date of 11/6/07. I Kept my end of the agreed contract perfectly.

After much duress, multiple phone calls with numerous employees, and letter, I received alot of empty promises and no produce until 1-10-08 I received a computer. Not what was promised to me in contract, but a computer. I never received 700.00 software bundle, TV and Printer Bundle or my 300.00 rebate to complete their end of the contract. I have since then made multiple calls to every they suggested I speak with and faxed multiple request and supporting documents to them with nothing being shipped to me. One of my last calls to them on 11/12/09 I talked with Marleny who stated she was sending my paperwork to the senior representative and they have my items in stock, but not shipping them due to the fact they are trying to figure out why they haven't shipped. Since then I've called on at least three different occasions and all I've gotten is busy signals. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BARBARA of COATESVILLE, PA January 17, 2010

i had brought a computer from blue hippo in january of 2008. i was told at the time after i had maded all the payments that i would recieve a camera and a printer and a rebate check for 300.oo doolars at this time i still have not recieved anything . i had my checking account debited 69.99 every two weeks untill everything was paided. now all of a sudden the company files for chapter 7 banrupcy. what can i do for them to give me what they owe me?and than now i have had problems with the computer that i brought from them i already had to have it serviced . they or whom ever had locked my files that i had saved on my computer .

i feel that they took advange of me because of my bad credit. i believed that i paid 2,000 for this computer which is not worth it but i needed it for my kids and for myself. mamy times i would call them and they would tell me its on its way and i wouldn't recieve anything. now i heard though the news that there is a class law suit against the ,what do i need to become part of the suit?

zynda of belton, TX January 16, 2010

I paid 91.96 every two weeks for a whole year to get a 17 in monitor dell computer and a 32 in hd tv-flat and a printer. Finished paying in Dec and never received the merchadise nor the phone number that i have for customer service work anymore to contact them. I was cheated out of 2390.96

douglas of pittsburgh, PA January 16, 2010

I agreed to purchase a computer from above company. They told me they would ship it after I sent them 99 and a voided check and I would pay them 38 weekly thereafter for one year. The computer did not come after I sent the 99 and they then told me that I had to establish credit with them for several weeks before I would get the computer. After that period of time had lapsed they kept changing the story and the shipment date etc which made me nervous so I cancelled the automatic payments. I was told that my money could not be refunded and it became more and more difficult to get a rep on the phone and when I did get a rep they were extremely rude.

Jo of Ardmore, OK January 15, 2010

I have purchased one of there computers never received it. I have put in 783.00 dollarsinto it now they have no phone filing bankruptcy. I am a single mom and need the money back.
