Why Does College Cost So Much?

Roxanne of Council Bluffs, IA March 14, 2009

Roxanne of Council Bluffs IA (03/14/09)
I refinanced my student loan quite a few years ago, and no matter what payments I make on it, the balance never lowers. In fact, my balance has gone from an original 23000 to now 37000. I can't get ahead because they keep increasing my loan as the money I pay never reduces anything. They just keep adding more and more interest to it. I'm never going to be able to get this loan paid off.

They have refused to work with me regarding payments at what I can afford to pay each month. I haven't been able to make payments at times because they just keep raising the amount. I'm now only paying what I can afford to pay. As a single parent, I have to work within my budget and I want this loan to show some reducement, not just keep growing. I feel like I am being ripped off and taken advantage of. I regret ever consolidating my student loans with these people. They have only made my situation worse, not better. I am glad I found this site and to see that I am not the only one this is happening to.

They keep raising my payments, keep adding so much interest to it that the loan is continually increasing, not decreasing. It has hurt my credit and it's putting me more in debt.

My school loan was origionally 5,100.00. Eight years later ACS sends me a bill stateing I owe another 4,900.00. So in eight years I have only paid 200.00 off this loan? Come on that dosn't sound right. Exspecially when I had a cotract for them to withdraw 50.00 from my Bank of America account. Later when I was overdrawn on my Bank of America account, they proceeded without permission to try and withdraw from my Wells Fargo Account. Later after I talked with anotheroperater from ACS, who would not give her name, but says that on her computer that I have paid almost 2,000.00 off but said I still owe the 4,900.00. They have made a big miscalculation and I am know seeking help on how to sue this company. I will most likely be suing in Los Angeles superior court.

Upset and feel that I am being forced to pay extra money than I owe.

In March 2006, I accepted an offer to refinance previously consolidated student loans. ACS/NextStudent altered my promissory note and I have spent three years trying to get them to make good on promises to fix to my satisfaction the mess they made. I've contacted the Education Ombudsman, Congressman Waldon and am now working with the Arizona Department of Financial Institutions. So far nothing has been done to resolve the problem or compensate me for the intentional infliction of emotional distress this has caused.

A student loan that started at 71,000 now has a payoff amount of 176,073.12. I've lost three years of ability to reduce the principal and I have extreme mental and emotional distress. I see the altering of the promissory note as a form of Identity Theft

David of Rolling Meadows, IL January 23, 2009

David of Rolling Meadows IL (01/23/09)
In a nutshell, have been trying to straighten out my loan situation for years. I lost my engineering job in '01, and have not been able to find a job since then that would allow me to keep making payments on my student loan, which ACS services. It was originated by Sallie Mae, but no one has been able to find records confirming that. It has been sold several times in the last few years. The interest rate has just been increased from 5.5% to 8.25%, with monthly payments of 550.

I have exhausted all of my options for deferments, forbearances, etc., yet they are unable to offer me any other options. They call and call, each time I speak to a different person who has no record of previous calls, actions taken. Sometimes they say I have deferment time left. I tell them I know for sure that I don't, but they refuse to listen, or take any action to confirm. A supervisor threatened to hang up on me once, saying I was arguing with him. I simply do not know what to do about this. I'm 50, live in a room in my mother's house, and take home 300 from the only job I am able to find. I requested an application to apply for loan forgiveness, but they wouldn't send it to me, and gave me no reason why.

Nervous breakdown, trashed credit history. Unable to find job in the field for which I got this student loan for 8 years.

My wacovia loan is now being handled by ACS and they have reported that I was 150 days late on my credit report when my account has always been in forbearance or deferment!!! My credit score is suffering and I can't get a hold of them!!!
