The Federal Trade Commission caught up with this operation in February 2004 (story). Anyone whose story is similar to those below should file a complaint with the FTC at www.ftc.gov, just in case there is any consumer restitution at some point in the proceedings.
Jami of Inglewood CA (03/29/08) I contacted Briggs and Baker after I heard their radio ad on KNX 1070. I was approx $50,000 in debt and did not want to file for bankruptcy. This company stole around $4,000 from me to work with my creditors. They did absolutely nothing for me but ruin my credit even more.
I almost lost my home. I did have to eventually file for bankruptcy.
Grayr of Glendale CA (05/15/07) As with everyone else, they promise me to pay off may $12,000 credit card depts with only 10% of amount. I have paid them in advance $2,300 to start. After 2 months and big damage to my credits I had decided to stop this nonsence. I went to their office which was far away from me, after trying to resolve over the phone. I sayed at the office until they promise to send money back. Fter another month I reciced only $725 from them. I kept contacting them, no use and I like anyone gave up on them, considering myself stupid to get involve with this mess. If I could get my money back, I would love it. and would like to see those guys and any other to go jail. It left beig scar in my credit report, if I could fix that I would.
Aaron of Beaverton OR (04/20/04) We paid Briggs and Baker $10,537.66 to settle our outstanding revolving credit debt. we wrote 6 checks totalling $4,640 to our creditors per Briggs and Bakers instructions. Our creditors claim that the language used by Briggs and Baker does not limit them to further collection procedures. The attorney used by Briggs and Baker has been disbarred and cannot be reached. Briggs and Baker can not be reached and will not respond to our inquiries.
4 years later, we are still be pursued by creditors and will probably be sued for past due amounts.
Lisa of Los Angeles CA (12/06/03) I gave briggs and baker 1200.00 to settle my debts for me at lower amout. They failed to comply with their contract and our agreement by not calling discover and offering a settle amount. I ended up ruining my good standing account with Discover causing them to refer my account to Attorney's office for collection putting me 7 mos behind. I called to get an explanation go a disconnected number and no refund or explanation
Ruining of credit and legal action brought against me
Warre of Los Angeles CA (07/12/02) On November 9, 2001, I call Briggs & Baker to consolidate my bills and they said they could get the interest low and my payments low. They agreed, all this was done over the phone and by fax. Nothing in a real physical way was done in my behalf. They sent me a letter in May 2002 saying give them 30-45 days more to make arrangements with my creditors, all the while my bills were growing. Finally I had enough, I wrote the BBB and notified my lawyer.
Briggs & Baker sent me a $64.00 check, after I from Dec-May gave them $348.00. Not counting all the late fees and interest added to my accounts. I heard their ad on 1070 KNX Radio and they sound convincing, how wrong I was. The BBB gave them a unsatifactory rating (my fault) and my lawyer suggested I write you and co to the Attorney General's office so as to prepare to take them to small claims court.
I am being sued by my creditors and it looks like I my have to file a Chapter 7. I sent back their $64.00 check. I want to pay my bills, but I loss some serious pay from my job. I trusted this company to help me and all I got was the run-around and financially deeper in debt. My blood pressure is worse, I'am about to retire and thats another cut in pay. I don't know what else I get get from them but I like to know. Yes I'am tired and hurt and of course my family have felt my difficulties with this problem.
Robin of Simi Valley CA (04/12/02) They are a credit counseling company. THey took $800+ over the past 4 months from me and they never contacted any of my creditors, never paid anyone. They kept telling me each time i called (which was alot--everytime a creditor called) to not pay my creditors, they were making arrangements, yadda, yadda, yadda. So now over 10 creditors are 4 months delinquent!!!! They shouldn't be able to do this.
They won't give me my money back either.
Consequences??? My credit is RUINED!!!! I owe over $2500 in fees and deliquent payments to my accounts!! How am i suppose to catch up on that!!!!!
Lisa of Los Angeles (12/6/03):
