There are many agencies that help consumers resolve their debt problems. Unfortunately, there are many others that don't. If you need help straightening our your credit, the best place to start is probably your local or state consumer affairs agency. Ask them to refer you to a reputable, non-profit credit counseling agency.
In some states, such as New York, only attorneys and non-profit organizations are permitted to provide budget planning services, including debt consolidation services and negotiation of reduced rates and payments to credit card companies. The debtor makes monthly payments to the budget planner, who then distributes the money to creditors, for a fee paid by the consumer. Companies purporting to provide these services, sometimes under the name "credit counseling" services, violate New York law unless they are actually non-profit organizations or attorneys.
