Debt Collectors Go After Expired Verizon Bills
Afni Complaints

I continue to get collections from them for an account with Verizon from who knows when because they don't state it. The phone number is in Ohio, and I haven't lived there in over 10 years. And when I did there wasn't a Verizon Phone company-but a Bell.

They originally wanted 137 dollars and now they'll take 68 dollars. I do not need there scam ruining my credit reports.

They are harassing me as far as I believe and using tactics to rip people off. I know what companies I have dealt with and know that I have never owed anyone anything late!!!!

I was smart enough to google this company and it seems my suspicions are correct. Someone needs to protect the people whoa aren't able to check this out for themselves and are paying crooks money.

I received a Notice from this third party collections agency back in June advising me that I owed 750.00 on my Sprint Bill. I did owe sprint money so I called and heard them out. They advised that I could pay around 300 one time payment but that my credit would still suffer. I could also agree to give them my bank account information and they would accept 3 180 payments for a total of about 520 and that Sprint would consider that as paid in full and they would report to the Credit Reporting Agencies like I paid my bill in full from the get go. I'm desperately trying to fix my credit so I agreed. They advised that my final payment would be in September and that I should be receiving a letter by 10/31/08 from them and Sprint finalizing that the Credit Agencies were being notified that I paid in full with no penalties.

November came and still no word from AFNI. I called on November 8th and they acted surprised because the submission to Sprint had not gone through yet. They advised to call back in a few weeks. I called back again around the second week of December only to have them give me the same answer but this time they added that for some reason Sprint was not returning their requests and that the AFNI Representative in charge of the Sprint contact will try to contact them again. February 2nd 2009 - I call AFNI again and the first rep tells me that Sprint has not come back with their reply but that he can close the account at AFNI (Which at Sprint would remain open). The rep told me that Sprint had my payments. I advised the rep that I will contact Sprint about the matter. I called Sprint and they did not even have me in the system and transferred me back to AFNI.

Once I contacted AFNI again the rep advised me they can't do anything and she transferred me to a supervisor Angie. Angie proceeded to tell me that they have my money not Sprint but that they could not release it because Sprint has to send a Reply back. I explained to her that this has been going on for 3 or 4 months already and that I need resolution on the matter. She only offered to resubmit my request. I asked her to please conference call a Sprint representative with us so we can sort it out, but she refused. She advised that they do not have a phone number for Sprint and that only one of their specialized reps can do it but they would have to submit a request. At this point I demanded my money back and advised I would pay Sprint directly. She advised she will not release my funds. I ended my call by requesting their legal departments contact information.

I called back an hour later to find out the exact amount I paid and to see if there are remarks of how many times the claim has been submitted to Sprint. The AFNI Rep Carl had no idea what I meant about a Sprint pay off 129 I still owed and that if I was calling to pay off the remaining (Which they said Sprint would waive since I set up the more expensive direct debit plan). The rep then put me on hold for a minute. When he came back on the line he was much more aggressive and demanded to know what he could do for me. I explained that I was just making sure I had the right account information (Just in case I could take legal action). He advised that his remarks show that I already spoke to a supervisor and that now he knows about the Sprint issue (Shouldn't that have populated when he pulled up the account).

I struggled for 3 months with the extra 200 I had to pay those months in a desperate effort to rebuild my credit (At the same time I took on two of my student loans as well... I was pretty strapped for money). This issue is hindering my credit score at a time when I need to buy my own home. I have spent much time on the phone arguing with this company and it has left me depleted and frustrated. I would have rather paid Sprint myself or at least another Credit Card. In the end I just want to save my credit. (I'm working 2 jobs just to make ends meet)

I received a collection notice from Afni 1/26/09. It contained no info other than an Afni acct.#, balance due of 45.98 of which they so graciously would accept 36.78 (20%off), creditor (Verizon South, Inc.), creditor acct.#, and date of 12/11/08. I have never used Verizon South, or any other Verizon compass direction. I am shocked to read all the complaints against them for practically the same reason - bogus debt with cell phone carriers. They pulled this from somewhere out of the past because they used my maiden name. I was married and changed my last name in 2000.

Keep getting Settlement offeres from AFNI on phone service I've never had. They started with Sprint, then Verison now it's ATT. Same claim different phone companies. Been going on for several years now. I have just been throwing out their notices, but now I'm going to start keeping them. I think they should be sued.

Starting to worry about credit rating because after several years they finaly found the cell company I really use. But, I have never been late with any payment.

I found out that I have been a victim of identity fraud in 2007. I had two collection accounts on my credit report. someone had obtained services with my SS#. I contacted the merchants and after submitting all the required information to these two companies, they found the accounts to be fraudulent and dismissed the charges and informed the above collection agency. Although one of the accounts was removed from my credit, it has reappeared after 18 months and the other account remains in collection.

I have contacted the collection agency many times to find out why the account appeared again and why the other account has not been removed even though I have confirmation from the companies that I owe nothing. They will not provide my with any information and will not remove the collection from my credit. They have ruined my credit even though I have proof that all these charges are fraudulent. The companies that they claim hired them to collect money for them, tell me I do not owe them anything.

This collection agency has ruined my perfect credit and is not willing to provide me with any proof or paperwork from the companies they claim they represent.
