Anthony of Washington NJ (10/03/08)
Fraudulent Collection notice RE: Verizon Several years old.

Darryl of Riverside, CA October 3, 2008

Darryl of Riverside CA (10/03/08)
I received 2 phone calls from AFNI; one in March 2008, the other in September 2008 saying that they are attempting to collect an outstanding debt. I told them that this was'nt possible, as I have never had an account with Sprint. I then received a letter dated 9/17/08 stating that they are collecting for the amount of 2427.76 for an outstanding account from Sprint.

I have never had any dealings with Sprint, but someone used my name, address and SSN to set up this bogus account. Sprint has been very helpful to me by giving me what info they could on the account. Not much though, date account was opened and the account number. This account was opened back in November, 2006.

I am doing everything I can on my end, i.e., contacting the 3 credit bureaus, filling out an Identity Theft Affidavit from the Sprint Fraud Department, filing a complaint with the FTC, contacting the Department of Social Security and a report with our local police department. With all the other complaints I have read from other victims, it sounds like AFNI is running a scam.

Along with dealing with recently being laid off and trying to find a job and provide for my family, just alot of added stress. I get to deal with this too!

This company sent me a fake collection notice. I've never had service with Qwest, and never will, however they sent me a bill, and then repeatedly asked for private information from me when I called in. I asked for proof of said debt, and they refused to provide it. The scary part about this all, is that they have access to people's credit report, and that no-debt rating that I once has, has probably been ruined because of this.

I'm a very hard working man. A full time employee, and a full time student. I pay for college out of pocket, and hope to buy a house soon, so having my credit tarnished with false debt information, will pretty much ruin my life. I'm very upset about this, and would really appreciate if a stand was officially taken against this company

I believe Collection Agencies like Afni are using this Economic times to use credit rating as a threat to collect funds that people cannot dispute because of age of the bill. Afni sent me a bill from Verizon for 78.22 for a phone number that was disconnected 8 years ago! When I asked if they had proof that the bill was not paid, the agent in turn asked me if I had proof that the bill was paid! For bills 8 years ago, I dont have immediate proof for anything! So most people will decide to give in because it is too small to go down an 8 year paper trail to harm your own credit rating. But this stinks of really poor ethics. Is there a way to deal with this?
