Ramona of Phoenix AZ (11/08/08) In August of this year I get a notice that AFNI Collections has placed a collection notice on my credit. While the amount is minor (26.00) I was never once contaced by ANFI nor the supposed creditor for the outstanding balance and now it's impacting my credit that I work hard to maintain. I have made numerous calls to AFNI and cannot reach anyone.

Eric of Athens MI (10/29/08) In dealing with Verizon in the late 1990's, I had a outside long distance company call wanting me to switch services. I repeatedly said no and at some point in the conversation I had said yes but not to accept their services. The conversation ended with me believing i had made no change until the next months bill came. It was more than 800. I called the number on the bill and said I had't changed sevices. They said I had and there was nothing they could do about it. At one point they said I had said yes to thier sevices and it was on tape. I said I didn't and I wanted it changed back. They told me they could not do that, I would have to go through the servicing company.
Long story short, they would not help me clear it up so I had them cancel the account and I refused to pay the bill that was above customary service. It went to collections, I disputed it and it went away (for some time). In 2005, I moved and asked for a forward for 1 month and the final bill, they confirmed the forwarding address, told me to wait and they would send an end statemnent. Better than a year had passed and we forgot all about the final bill. Until we applied for credit and was denied for a over due phone bill in collections. We contacted the collections company, VERY disappointed, agreed to a fee and paid it asking at the time was this going to clear all debt? to which their reply was Verizon said this will clear all debt.
Now late 2008, we apply for credit again only to find ANOTHER Verizon in collection. I called to let the collection company know we had already paid that bill. This is when they advised me that the bill we paid was from 1998 and we now (3 years later) have an outstanding bill for 448. So I was led to believe that I was paying a legitimate bill that was not in dispute. Then when I needed financing, I was denied because of a Bill I never recieved a copy of. The collections company told me they had sent me up to 5 bills, of which we thought were just carry over and would/had stopped coming.
This has hurt my credit rating for YEARS, costing me higher interest rates, costlier insurance rates, denial of credit and undue late fee's. Hours of personal time trying to resolve issues and excessive stress. There is nothing I can due but keep paying bills they may have on file or never use creit or need insurance again. We vow to NEVER use their services again. I will further tell everyone I know to avoid working with such a low quality company. Chris of Denver, CO October 20, 2008
Chris of Denver CO (10/20/08) I checked my credit report today as I always do every 2 months and found that a company called AFNI, inc. showed up on all 3 of my credit reports as having a past due account with Qwest. No previous notices/bills were ever sent to my address. I have NEVER used Qwest in my life.
I called Qwest and they said they could do nothing. I called AFNI and they said it was a valid account and wanted my current information, I DID NOT give them anything. I have disputed this with all 3 credit reporting agencys and I hope this takes care of this scam. I have read a lot of information on the web about these crooks pulling this scam. Isn't this illegal? Why are they able to continue these pratices? Robert of Haskell, NJ October 14, 2008
Robert of Haskell NJ (10/14/08) A representative claiming to be from Anfi Inc (Collection Agency) has been calling and now has strted to send letters in an effort to collect a debt from 2001 when my company was owned by another individual. 2 Minutes into the first phone call she said that they would be willing to settle for half of the 9200 they claim is owed.
No past due bills were ever sent here and nothing negative has ever showed up on my credit report. After checking online it seems that this company is just trying to scare people into paying money that they do not owe.
Nothing has happened yet but I cannot help but wonder what rights these people have and how they can get away with this. Julie of Safety Harbor, FL October 7, 2008
Julie of Safety Harbor FL (10/07/08) I received a Collection Notice for an alleged outstanding bill from Verizon Virginia on 9/27/08. The notice had absolutely no official Verizon contact information, account number, logo, etc. I'm perplexed as to how AFNI can produce a collection notice from bogus information. The fact of the matter is, while the telephone number they listed as mine was correct, everything else was completely wrong. They had my last name wrong, they had the dates wrong, and the fact that I owed anyone anything was completely bogus. Not only do I possess a copy of my final Verizon invoice with a paid in full, 0.00 balance, but I also have a copy of my disconnect order dated July 2003. In addition, I had a new Verizon account set up in my new locale, as well as a Verizon Wireless account. Both of these accounts have always been paid in full each month. Verizon would not have allowed me to set up these new accounts if old debts had been outstanding.
I have since written AFNI a Cease and Desist letter, sent via USPS Certified Mail with a copy to the FTC, all three credit bureaus, Verizon Inc., the Attorney General in both Illinois (AFNI's corporate location) and Virginia, as well as the Inspector General of the USPS in case this can be classified as mail fraud.
I have not seen anything hit my credit reports so far, and I stated in my letter to AFNI that if any derogatory information hits my credit reports, that I will file an official complaint with the FTC and any other State, Federal, and appropriate consumer agencies to ensure they are punished for these outrageous phishing scams.
The only consequences thusfar have been the irritation of receiving a collections notice and the time it took to research AFNI and compile an appropriate response to their bogus Collection Notice. I will update this information as this issue is either escalated or put to rest. Anthony of Washington, NJ October 3, 2008
