First USA Bank

To put it mildly, First USA Bank is not a consumer crusader. It's notorious for its high interest rates, ever-multiplying fees and not-so-nice customer service. And not too long ago, First USA coughed up $1.3 million to settle a deceptive practices case brought by 28 states. Seems the bank had provided its customers names and account numbers to telemarketers, who then sold (or said they sold) various goods and services to the bank's long-suffering account holders.

Besides all that, there are such tales as this ...

First USA Bank
Rapidly rising interest rates
Late & overlimit fees
Unauthorized charges
Charges on phantom cards
Misapplied payments

Unauthorized credit check.

MARIA of LA PUENTE, CA November 17, 2009

I had an inquiry about First USA Bank on my credit report. I didnt apply for any credit card with this company at all. And I dont remember authorizing them to get my credit report for that matter. I dont know how to stop this.

Yordanka of Atlanta, GA November 13, 2009

I recently checked my credit report with Equifax and realized that some company called First USA Bank had made 3 hard inquiries on my credit report. Two of the inquiries are made within 13 days time frame. I have never heard of them before and did not even know what this company was about. Apparently this bank pulled my credit file without my permission. I filed a dispute with Equifax and in their response they indicated that "inquiries are factual record of file access" and I "should contact the creditor" if I feel that this was unauthorized. The address Equifax listed does not reflect a phone number. Is there anything I can do to have these inquiries removed from my current credit report? As far as I can see here I'm not the only person affected by this scam.

Trevor of Newport News, VA November 9, 2009

I want to refinance my home. I checked my credit score. It was a few points shy of the 750 I need to get the rate I'm looking for. Knocking below 750 is a "hard inquiry" performed by FIRST USA in 06/2008. I have no relationship w/ FIRST USA that I know of. Why are they checking my credit? I googled them. The internet is afire with stories similar to mine. Who are these creeps?

ran my credit report without my permission. lowered my credit score

Blanca of Monroe, CT October 28, 2009

I had a visa credit card through First USA for about 5 years. I chose to close/cancel the card after I found a credit card with a lower rate. I had a balance close to 5,000. I was paying monthly. I as late, they increased the rate to over 27%. After a couple of months I decided to bite the bullet and pay off my balance of the card. I sent in a payment for the full amount of the balance, which was 4,795.10. I took full responsibility, did what's right, held on to my principles of doing what's right!! and paid off my debt. They cashed my check for the full 4,795.10 on 8/06/09.

Last month in Sept. I rec'd an e-mail from First USA ( I used to pay online) stating that I owe (now)106!!! They are charging finance charges and LATE FEES on a ZERO BALANCE!!!! As of today, 10/28, they also submitted this charge of 106 to my credit Equifax!! HELP!!! This is wrong. I paid off my balance. they are charging on a zero balance.

EDWARD of LAKE HIAWATHA, NJ October 24, 2009

Since May, 2008, First USA Bank has performed 5 inquiries in order to view my credit report. I have never applied for a card from this institution. Why do they keep requesting to access my credit report. I feel as though if this practice continues, my credit score might be negatively affected somewhere down the road. Is there something I can do to stop this practice or have these inquiries removed from my current credit report? Thank you

Wei of Norwalk, CT October 23, 2009

Run my credit report without my permission. Would lower the credit score through this inquiry.

Gail of Eagan, MN September 28, 2009

I experienced the same issue as many of the emails posted on your site about FIRST USA BANK doing a credit check on me without authorization. I received an alert from Experian that they did this, and I am unsure what the consequences might be (e.g., could that affect my credit rating?). It seems there are hundreds of people claiming this happened to them. Do I have any recourse to keep this from happening again? Is there a suit pending on FIRST USA BANK to keep them from doing this?

Barry of New York, NY September 15, 2009

First USA credit card is terrible. I have already filed bankrupcy more than 10 years. They send my case to the collected agency and the collected agency is still bothering my life. They called my home without saying any thing. Use some kids to bother your life.
