What is Experian?

Experian is one of the top three credit reporting bureaus. Its headquarters are in Ireland, but it currently operates in close to 40 countries. Experian shares its information with businesses so they can accurately assess customers’ creditworthiness and reliability. It also uses its credit history data to help people improve their finances and protect them against fraud or identity theft.

What does Experian do?

Experian is generally known for its credit reporting software, but it also offers services that help protect you from identity theft or raise your credit score. The company’s services and products include:

  • Identity theft protection and monitoring: Experian’s identity theft protection membership, IdentityWorks, includes features like Social Security number monitoring, dark web surveillance and financial account activity tracking. Plans start at $9.99 a month, and Experian offers a free 30-day trial.
  • Credit score monitoring and reporting: Experian’s credit monitoring software, CreditWorks, tracks credit inquiries, account balance changes and new account creation. It also sends you a comprehensive credit report every month. The basic CreditWorks plan is free, but there’s also a paid version available for $24.99 a month that offers enhanced monitoring.

Experian offers multiple plans for each of its services. Some services, like Experian Boost, are completely free and don’t require credit card information.

    Worst experience. I have been trying to dispute a collection from them for a few whole weeks. I work everyday and have been trying so hard to get help and speak with an actual person not a stupid AI voice generator. The two other credit bureaus I was able to get help and dispute very quickly, I am so frustrated, I have a limited time to dispute the collection and they have made it the hardest and longest process, I never ever leave bad reviews but this is the worst experience I've ever had with a place and still have never actually gotten a chance to speak with a actual human, I've tried online many times and it says my email has been used so I have no choice but to call and deal with the AI that hasn’t helped me one bit. :,) I’ll try again tomorrow when I can find time and I hope I never have to call or deal with a place like this again. Amen lol.

    I discovered fraudulent hard inquiries on my credit reports, along with an unfamiliar address and phone number linked to my information. While I successfully disputed this online with the other two major credit bureaus, my experience with Experian was ridiculous. Their identity-verification system used outdated information, preventing me from accessing my account. I struggled to get help through their phone system, often getting stuck in automated menus, and the one representative I reached was unhelpful and routed me back to the automated menus. Ultimately, I had to send a certified mail dispute to address the issue instead of resolving it online. This experience was so disappointing given the sensitive information they handle. And my credit report remains frozen from them until I can resolve accessing my Experian account.

      My husband had a dispute on his credit so he called Experian to get some help. But the customer service person ask about his dispute and offered a solution. We turned down the $300 and something for a program. And just needed the address to send a dispute letter ourselves. And she hung up on us twice. Bad customer service!! Sad no one wanted to help us.

      I have zero issue with Experian's credit monitoring. Other than the FICO site and various credit card benefits, this is the only bureau that provides a FICO score, most lenders use. BUT I recently opened a Smart Money Savings for the 4%. WORST INTERFACE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! Had problems transferring money from the get-go. Withdrew it all without closing and forgot I added as one of my accounts to deposit directly from my paycheck. Set it up from my payroll, not through them. So I decided to try again for some reason. Transferring funds to or from is a joke. I transferred 15K from another bank to my EX Smart Savings, and they only credited 8K. After finally getting through to someone in customer services and listening to the long-winded scripts they have for every statement you make, I was told there was a limit for daily, weekly and monthly transfers TO them.

      I've heard of limits for transferring out of an account, but I'm trying to put money into this account. I read my consent and all terms and agreements from opening an account, and found this limit listed nowhere. Then, they tell me I've exceeded the monthly limit, so they may hold my money hostage for 30 days. They're making money off holding my 7K in a pending status, and I'm not. There is no issue with the transfer from bank, this is just their policy. I asked that they reject the 7K and send it back to the sending bank, but they can't do this. This is not a check or direct deposit; this is a transfer from an external bank. The funds are there if it transfers, so no reason to hold other than their limit policy. Looked up Community Federal Savings Bank, and they have violations. The OCC announced enforcement action just this month, May 2026. Such disdain for them and will let everyone, site know that I can.

      Experian is a complete waste of time and money. They have such horrible security when in fact that is the reason you have an account with a credit monitoring company. My account is hacked REPEATEDLY and then you cannot get anyone on the phone. And when you do, they will not know how to fix the problem. I've literally have had them say this to me. They just repeatedly transfer your calls (I've been on the phone for over and hour at times) and no one ultimately resolves your issues. Or if they do, your account gets hacked again and you start all over. DO NOT TRUST THIS HORRIBLE COMPANY.

      Experian sends me an email whenever my credit drops a few points with normal credit card usage, but they make it sound like a warning, as if someone else has used my credit cards: "YOUR FICO SCORE DECREASED," with "DECREASED" in big scary red letters. They tell me to visit the notification center to see what is going on. But when one does sign in to their free account, they try to trick you into signing up for a paid subscription to their advanced monitoring services (even though I already have a freeze set for all 3 bureaus). One can easily sign up for their paid service without even realizing they have done so. Only at the very end of the tricky application is there a link in small letters saying something like "Continue on without increasing protection." Click that if you are just checking to see how much your FICO score supposedly dropped. No need to buy their additional protection. Why isn't there a class action suit against this scam company?

      After disputing an account 3 xs that was on my report. In my dispute, I informed Experian under 506b that it was illegal to report incomplete and inaccurate information. I spend 2 hours talking and explaining that it was not correct. They said that it was verified. I asked how it was verified if I have a letter from the creditor that was not complete. They said they can't give me that information, and they won't remove it. I talked to TransUnion and within 48 hours, it was removed. Experian is the worst credit reporting company. Also, I am moving on with complaints to cfra and then they stopped me from filing disputes.

      So we were on hold for 1 hour trying to figure out where to send paperwork to get a credit report on our dead father. They told us to use the upload document. We tried and then said you have to mail it in. Who in this day and age mails off death certificates, and wills? Worst ever.

      One of most worst credit bureau. It's been more than 45 minutes I am trying to contact customer service, that why my points dropped but there is no way you can talk to agent. There is no option that they can transfer your line to speak with an agent.

      Warning: Do not trust this company with your data. After my accounts were hacked, I discovered there is no way to actually contact a person. You are stuck in a loop of automated responses while they simultaneously have the audacity to ask for an upgrade fee. Paying them anything is an overpayment for the "service" they provide. Truly one of the worst customer experiences I've ever had.

      Worse customer service than the old cable TV companies. Attempted to call for the purpose of temporarily lifting a freeze. Many phone calls and many hours over several days and never was able to reach a live person. The robo answering system would simply hang up if I asked for a live person. Tried on-line. I do not have a smart phone to activate a link. Requested a one time PIN by voice. When Experian called, their system did something to my phone. It did not ring and went to voicemail without my knowledge so I did not receive the PIN. The phone had been in use all day without any problems. I then found that all subsequent incoming calls were going directly to voicemail without ringing. Turned off the phone, took out and reinstalled the battery.

      The phone started receiving calls again. All subsequent Experian contact attempts on-line were rejected, without even a chance for the phone confirmation, just a message that said I could not be verified. Resorted to snail mail with all supporting document. Freeze lift was never verified. I only received a reply letter that said my credit report was frozen. Fortunately the company that needed my credit report was able to work with me and verify my credit by other means. Why is Experian allowed to remain in business?

      BE AWARE OF EXPERIAN SHADY BUSINESS PRACTICES; Experian promoted a “no approval, no ding” offer that convinced me to apply for a credit card, AMERICAN EXPRESS. What they DO NOT TELL you is that the BANK still performs a HARD INQUIRY even if the APPROVAL IS USELESS. I HAVE A CREDIT OF 730+ and I was approved a USELESS $1,000 limit — something I never needed — and the hard pull DROPPED my score. If I had known this, OR IF I HAD READ THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS ABOUT EXPERIAN, I would never have applied. Experian should not advertise WHAT they CANNOT CONTROL. This feels DECEPTIVE and HARMFUL to consumers trying to protect their credit AND FINANCIAL HEALTH.

      I responded to a notice that my credit rating had changed. After logging in for a free inspection, I saw that the alleged change was not consequential. After logging out some days ago, I received a bill for $24.99 for a subscription I did not ask for. Wanting to cancel, I tried to log in on 04/14/2026 and was blocked, saying my email or pw was incorrect [it was in fact correct]. Tried resetting password by email.

      The message said instructions were sent to me by an email, which did not happen. Tried to call Experian's customer service and could not talk to a person. The robot answerer said it could not help and that I had to log in on their website. But of course I can't log in nor call, nor email. I want to cancel the subscription, but cannot get through to Experian to make it happen. I feel I have been scammed by Experian's deceptive business practice, as apparently so have many other people. For proof, I googled this question: "Why does Experian use deception to get you to subscribe?" The answer gave this full explanation:

These practices, often reported on forums like Reddit, involve tricking users who are seeking free credit reports or security freezes into signing up for monthly monitoring fees. You should ask and see the answer for yourself, which is followed by a long list of wrong-doings.

      My Experian credit score keeps going down but another keeps going up. They said I have a balance on my 1 account but I literally paid it before it was due. Was due the 10th and I paid it the 4th so y'all use outdated information 🙄🙄. Thanks wackos, I want to buy a house.

      Experian is a total scam. They send you a fake email informing you of a possible fraud alert on an account that doesn’t exist to get you to subscribe to a fraud protection plan and if you attempt to contact them by phone they want you to pay for a subscription to Experian in order to speak to someone live. Total Scam.

      0 stars. Worst company. They should not be in business, they just rely on AI and when you get a human being to "help you" they just say "oh you need to speak with the AI and she will help." Dumbest thing I have ever heard. They don't care about their customer. I don't even know why they have people working there if they are just going to route you to AI....       Terrible. Customer service is non-existent. For a customer needing to simply correct/verify a date of birth for a job they make it impossible. I can't imagine the hoops someone has to go through to actually get a fraud concern or credit report taken care of. Meanwhile, their database is constantly inputting incorrect data and affecting peoples' lives. Do better. Get some actual representatives who are competent instead of hiding behind an automated recording. What a disgrace.

      It takes sooooo long for everything to come up! Why??? The eve thing is no help! I want to delete my bank account and cards, but every time I try to disconnect it says error. It's my bank account and cards. I should be able to do whatever I want with them. I've used Experian for years.
