Jan of Harrison AR (01/18/09) Today after 2 years of great service, my laptop started smoking and burning . After stopping by Best-Buy where they believed that my mother board was burned up, because of the battery catching on fire. After arriving home hours later. I did some research and found that my laptop battery was recalled shortly after I purchased the laptop. Why wasn't I notified??? Now I need a new laptop and the 1000.00 investment is gone...... Vince of Gilbert, AZ January 12, 2009
Vince of Gilbert AZ (01/12/09) I purchased a Toshiba 1320, December 2007. At the advice of the sales rep, I did not purchase the extended warranty because he told me that if there was going to be a problem, it would show up in the first fe months. BIG mistake... 12 months and 2 weeks later, when I attempted to turn on the laptop, I found that the lights came on for 2 seconds and then off.
I called tech support to see if this was a known problem or what they would suggest. After an hour on the phone being on hold, explaining my situation with 3 different people and providing product number and serial number over and over, I was told that because it is out of warranty, I could not be told anything. If I paid 49.00 for the call, they could assist me, or I could pay 99.00 and have unlimited phone support for the year!!!! I did not pay the fee because I knew it was a hardware problem and a phone conversation would have resulted in no fix.
I had the computer looked at and was told that the motherboard was bad sue to excessive heat and lack of cooling ability. There's a large number of componets packed into a very small space and limited ventilation. The cost of a new board and labor to fix will run between 300.00 and 500.00. Further research shows that I am in no way alone in this situation. Colin of Winfield, IL January 9, 2009
Colin of Winfield IL (01/09/09) I purchase a Toshiba laptop (a satellite A355D) near the end of November of 2008. I purchased it at Best Buy for 599. I thought it looked nice, had all the gadgets that I needed and seemed like a great deal. Two days ago 1/7/09, I was on the laptop, it was sitting on my lap when all of the sudden the lcd display started malfunctioning. At the top of the screen I could see a black mark and through it and all up and down around it there were lines up and down the screen. I immediately brought the laptop into Best Buy where I purchased it.
The guy at the Geek Squad told me that it looks like there is a tiny micro-fracture in the lcd display and that it is not covered under warranty and that I'll need to call Toshiba. I did so when I got home. The person I talked to at Toshiba told me that I would have to bring the laptop to one of their service centers to be looked at. So, yesterday, 1/8/09, Rajeev Batra at Aero told me that it is a crack in the lcd and the black mark was the crystals leaking out. He said he can tell right away what happened, that I must have lifted the laptop from the top of the screen and this is what happened. He claimed that he sees it all the time. He then checked to see the cost of a new screen and labor because this would not be covered under warranty. He came back and told me that it would be 369! I practically paid that for the entire laptop. I told him, that I'd get back to him after I chatted with Toshiba. He told me that it would do me no good.
I contacted Toshiba this morning, 1/9/09, and I explained everything to an individual at customer service. I told him that I have owned laptops for years! I've managed company laptops and personal ones and this has never happened to me. The one time I take a chance and give Toshiba a shot, this happens! Their screens a shotty! Even if I did lift the laptop from the top, which I don't think I did. THERE IS NO PLACE IN THEIR MANUAL OR INSTRUCTIONS THAT TELLS THE USER TO NEVER LIFT THE LAPTOP FROM THE TOP! I've read through this 3 times. It ain't there. Anyway, they refused to give me anything and that is why I am complaining on here. (cause of course their website has no place to lodge complaints).
The economic damage is I have a laptop that I spent 599 on that I cannot use! It never worked real well in the first place. I have been laid off by my employer and NEED a laptop to continue my job search. Stein of Alta, OTHER January 3, 2009
