Graphic Card Problem May Affect Millions of Computers

Adam of Birches Head OTHER (03/19/09)
I have a HP Pavillion DV9500 series and have the suspect Nvidia card. I have contacted the HP customer services but only got a reply basically askign me to contact out of warranty claims. They will not accept any liability.

Dell sells the Vostro 1400 with the Nvidia graphics processing unit problem. Typically manifests itself by the video screen on the computer either being unable to display anything or displaying a number of colored lines across the screen.

500-1000 usd for new computer

5 days ago my laptop went dead, displaying horizontal flashy lines across the screen and can't boot to Vista anymore. Checked with HP online chat and advised to send it to BestBuy for diagnostics (~US100). Checked out the forum and found a lot of people sharing the similar issue. Hate to pay another 300-400 to fix the motherboard knowing that it's not a permanent fix.

I bought a Fujitsu-Siemens xi2428 laptop bearing the Nvidia 8600m GS chipset. From 7 months of using it, the display suddenly comes up with artifacts across the screen and ultimately unable to display anything or stripes across screen during startup. There is no other possible way to fix this except for uninstalling the chipset. Replaced the motherboard under warranty and the same exact problem comes barely after 3 months of usage. I felt cheated for spending so much on a product that has been known to be defected.

I planned to use this laptop for several years but since knowing this defect, looks like I have to spend more money to buy either a new laptop or desktop.

I purchased the HP Pavillion tx1000 less than two years ago. The basic symptoms described by many began. The screen shuts down, after lines or a foggy fading down. Then, my computer will not work at all. I called tech support at HP, and was informed of the recall, then transferred to someone who asked me to run diagnostics, which failed-as the computer shut down, and then I was told that a mistake was made and that my computer was not actually recalled and that HP would fix it, so long as I gave them more money. My independant research informed me of the ongoing issues with the graphics card which HP and nVidia are refusing responsibility for. What are my options here?

I am still paying for this computer. I use it in my livelihood as an author and I have wasted several hours, a valuable resource, fighting for the basic rights of a consumer. I feel cheated, disrespected and naive to have invested over a thousand dollars into companies that are willing to sell products they KNOW are defective. It is not right. I am sick, physically, to think that I must continue paying for a product the companies know are faulty. Cheated, I feel sickeningly cheated.
