Graphic Card Problem May Affect Millions of Computers

Lean of San Jose, CA July 24, 2009

My notebook (Asus G2S) is using nVidia's 8600M (nVidia 8M serious) and the screen is failing me by white-washing the screen and making my notebook not function.

Kevin of Louisville, KY July 23, 2009

A month after purchasing a new computer (Gateway/AMD Quad-core, 6GB, 64-bit OS, Windows Vista), I decided to upgrade my graphics card to a Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT. From the very beginning I started getting the dreaded "nvlldmkm" display driver error message, even after updating with numerous Nvidia drivers. The current driver version is 186.18, which continues to randomly fail. According to the online forums I've read and multiple calls to Nviidia's tech support, there's no known remedy to this driver problem. Apparently it's a well known compatibility issue between Windows Vista and Nvidia's drivers, yet Nvidia continues to sell their product as Vista compatible.

I basically have the same laptop in the second model, but the graphics card keeps failing, and this is a known problem by Nvidia but Sony wont fix it for free and are asking for £500! No laptop for 2 days, spend 48hours trying to figure out the problem, all my work was on the laptop so at 1st was scarred it got wiped! many problems!

Dharmendra of Eden Prairie, MN June 22, 2009

I have a a Hp Dv2500t Customizible notebook which i purchased in July2007 with an added option of Nvidia 8M series graphics card. Since last month my laptop display has gone. It started with sudden restarts of my laptop. Upon restart, i would see my boot up screen split up in to 6 - 8 sections with multiple lines. This process became frequent with time and now my laptop no longer starts up.

I researched on the net and found that millions of people are affected because of this and that this is a problem with Nvidia. Nvidia themselves acknowledged it and said they'll keep 150 to 200 millions to get the affected PC's repaired.

I contacted HP customer support for getting mine repaied as well. I was out of the standard warranty but i explained to the customer service rep that this is a genuine problem with the 8m series of graphics card and HP should cover the cost of the repairs. The rep said that they do have a limited extension of warranty for this very issue. When he looked up my model/serial combination, he said that my laptop does not qualify for that extension in warranty.

When i have the same graphics card as with other laptop and the problem ois the same, how can they say that i do not qualify. Plus i had configured my laptop to add in the graphic card. I spent many calls with the HP customer support but they wouldnt agree to that my problem was the same as the other people. I'm very disappointed with HP. They are asking me to shell out 400 to get it repaired. So basically i have to shell out for nvidia's issue.

Issues with the Nvidia GeForce 8M Series graphics processing unit. Over the past 5 months I've been having seemingly random instances where the screen becomes difficult, if not impossible to read, then my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1520) decides to shut down. Other times I recieve the 'blue screen of death' But instead of being crisp and clean the image is horribly distorted. I've tried using a variety of updates for my video card, going from the factory default and trying each and every one of them, I've researched methods out there that help modify updates for the same video card, but for a different OS (I use Vista, I'm running an XP update for my video card) and that seems to help. The rate of errors has dropped off to only 3 or 4 a day from 8 to 10. Went to www.techsupportforum.com recently because I was at wits end trying to figure out the issue. Was sent to and to put it mildly, became furious. Perviously I respected NVIDA, I liked their cards, low heat output nice size. But not bothering to notify people that there is an issue with the video card is plain wrong. Honestly, if it is possible to put in ATI into my laptop I will, just to get rid of this damaged video card.

I own a Sony Vaio laptop equipped with a Nvidia 8m series graphics card, and ít just went down and never worked again since a week ago. Sony tech support said the graphics card burned and that it was a common damage in that series and the repair was about US700.

Hussain of Broadlands, VA April 4, 2009

Hussain of Broadlands VA (04/04/09)
The nvidia graphics card model: Nvidia Geforce 8400M GT and Geforce 8400M GS were included with our Sony and Dell laptops respectively. Both GPU units are having overheating problems.

Not able to work on the laptop, unable to do school projects, parts of laptop components risked melting. Risk of burn.
