I purchased an Epson model NX400 printer as a Christmas present (Dec/2008) for my daughter. She has been using it since then to print B&W letters for her business since then and has rarely used the printer for color prints/documents. Today (9/8/9), while trying to print a color document, the printer refused to print and indicated on the Epson printer monitoring software screen that her color cartridge needs to be replaced. Since she did not have another color cartridge available (and the one in the printer was practically full) and in an effort to continue, she arranged for the document to be printed in black; The same result occurred. Thinking that the black cartridge needed replacement, she put a new one in the printer and received the same results (need to replace the color cartridge(s)- will not print. Frustrated, she called the Epson tech phone support number and was told that the printer software for this model (and similar Epson multi-inexpensive cartridge printers) monitors all of the cartridges and if any one of them are low on ink, or if any one of the cartridges are older than 6 months, the cartridge(s) will need to be replaced with fresh ones. I've never had a printer that did this - even the multi-thousand dollar business printer systems - just a warning that the printer is low or out of ink/toner. Tim of Crossville, TN April 1, 2009
Tim of Crossville TN (04/01/09) I purchased an Epson Artisan 700 printer on Dec 6 2008 as a Christmas gift for my daughter who lives in Virginia. I live in Tennessee. In January, she finally tried to set up the printer and found that it would not power up. She tried to return it to Staples in Virginia but they advised her that after 14 days, she had to deal with the manufacturer. So she sent the printer back to me as I volunteered to do it. I felt bad that her gift wouldn't work.
I contacted Epson and after a short attempt to diagnose the problem, the technical person agreed that it was a manufacturer defect and told me he would send out a new one. However, I had to give him a credit card number and if I did not send back the broken printer when I got the new one, they would charge me 275.00. That was 25 more than I originally paid. I agreed. A couple days later, the replacement printer arrive. Except instead of being a new printer, it was a reconditioned one.
I called to complain that I was to receive a new printer. I finally got this Cheryl in Customer Relations who said the warranty required me to return the broken printer within 15 days of purchase to get a new one. I read her the warranty and no where did it say that. In fact, it said a new or reconditioned prouct would be provided based upon the status of the printer. In other words, it it is used, you get reconditioned. If new, you would get a new one. Not so according to Cheryl.
Epson refused to budge on this. I feel I have been duped. If I didn't return the original broken one, they would charge me 275 which is MORE than the cost of a brand new unit. A reconditoned unit can be purchased on the Internet for up to 100 LESS than a new one. Bottom line is they charge for new and give reconditioned. DON'T BUY AN EPSON PRODUCT! They do not stand behind their products. Beware.

Susan of Ardmore PA (04/01/09) Purchased a new Epson Artisan 800 from Amazon on March 10th. hooked it up on the 14th of March. I printed a few pages and then needed toner (thought it was odd but decided maybe they packed it w/starter packs). went out and bought toner (about 75.00) came home and printed a few more pages (about 20) and now I need to replace the magenta toner (kinda odd since I was printing B&W text only) so back to the store I go and for another 12.99 I get magenta toner. this time I run the clean nozzles and printer head stuff and then I try to print again.
this time I wanted to print one page (a fax record in B&W and the stupid machine says I need to replace all the toner cart. EXCEPT magenta. Now I am really ticked. I run thru the trouble shooting stuff and it says I have to clean the print heads and nozzles again so I do that again and I get to print my one page. The following day the whole thing starts again. this time I was headed to my mother's so I took my lap top with me and printed there (on her very old Brother ink jet printer) and I notice her colors are better and they match the colors I was getting when I printed from my old printer BUT the new Epson printer colors are so faded it is really obvious.
On my way home I purchase more toner. come home and install it, ran the cleaning program and printed the same document. I have to go thru the shut off/turn on process several times but I got it to print but again the quality is awful. I contact Epson (by e-mail) and after a few days Lisa D responds and tells me to call 1 866 for cust service because I have a hardware issue. So I do that and I get a guy who I can hardly understand and he obviously has trouble understanding english. I end up on hold forever and then he runs me thru the same stupid process of cleaning heads and nozzles.
while I was fuming my son googled Epson Inks Complaints and lo and behold, we're not the only ones having the problem! I ended up hanging up on the [rep] at Epson because he was refusing to address the hardware issue until he wasted more of my time doing everything I already did. He repeatedly asked me questions about things that I already told him.

Juan of Lancaster PA (02/09/09) i bought a printer (all in one)that because i did not do my homework of finding out all the functions and weaknesses of the product, i am stuck with no options. If i decide to print in BLACK INK ONLY the printer still uses all the printer inks of all colors, leaving without options to use or not other colors. in other words I HAVE TO BUY ALL THE INK COLORS FASTER BECAUSE IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT COLOR YOU USE IT STILL USES ALL OF THEM.

Fatma of Virginia Beach VA (02/07/09) Our IT guy ordered a Epson Printer for one of the restaurants and before long like in about 5 hrs. he realized that system was'nt going to support it so the next morning we called to cancel and the printer just arrived after 2 hrs. so the customer service said if you refused the package you will be charged 30.00, if you return it your selves there wont be any charges. So that evening our office boy took it to fed ex and sent it back to them by mistake he let the clerk choose how to send it which was priority overnight which was charged 99.67 and they did not receive it the next day either.
So than after a week later they gave me a refund with 47.85 restocking fee deduction. Wow what happened to the 30.00 I was trying to avoid. So I treaten them by reporting them to all the legal agencies across the country. And the FBI for fraud investigations. They are a shameless predatory practicing company which should be slapped with a lot of law suits. that's why the economy is down because everyday people have been getting ripped off by these greedy business practices and there is no law enforcements to stop them.
So the item was 319.00 I ended up paying 99.67 S&H and 47.85 for restocking fee which they refused to refund. So I don't have product only by receiving and returning I lost this much money 146.00 without buying anything. does this make any sense to you? Joseph of Chesterfield, MI February 3, 2009
