AT&T Wireless Leads In Number Portability Problems

Although AT&T Wireless shares the name of its former parent company, it has long since moved out and started life on its own. But even as an independent company, AT&T Wireless displays many of the same traits that have caused its parent to watch its once-massive customer base ever so steadily erode.

You can't say AT&T is no longer innovative. Whereas most cell phone companies insist their contracts run until the moon has turned to dust, AT&T now waits quietly for some favorable contracts to expire so that it can hit customers with the highest rates imaginable. Don't laugh, it happened to Alina.

A few recent complaints:

Rachel of San Francisco CA (08/29/08)
I had two separate phone lines w/ AT&T and I switched the phones (i-phone and razor) between the two accounts. Unbeknown to me, they started a contract on the line that the i-phone was now attached to (the line previously did not have a contract) and 6 months later when I found out and I called, I am being told everyone knows that when you attach an i-phone to a number regardless of its contract situation, you will be tied into a contract.

To my question of why wasn't I informed of this when I called At & t to switch the phones I was told I can't be responsible of what another representative didn't do? OK! wouldn't the company have to be responsible I say. No, the representative said. How can a company tie me into a contract without giving me the facts verbally over the phone or require a signature.

Now I am tied into a contract on both lines and I don't want to be and cancelling a contract would require me paying a cancelltion fee.

I reffered 2 of my family members to ATT and after calling for 4 months I was told that I would not be able to get any referals. I felt that this action was very cruel and showed a sign of false advetisment and the customer services reps were very disrespectful and not at all helpfull.

STRESSED ABOUT CALLING AROUND, GETTING A MILLION DIFFERENT STORIES

Michelle Sobel of Ventura, CA August 27, 2008

Michelle of Ventura CA (08/27/08)
In the last year, I have called to talk to supervisors inregards to my billing statement and all they do is tell me that if you read the bill you will see to why you're charges are being charged. My monthly statement should be 150.00 per month for four lines with 2100 unlimited minutes, nights and weekends. 100.00 for the first line, and 9.99 for each extra line.

Now I have gone on line today to check my previous bills due to I do not recieve a bill in the mail and I notice they are charging me one month 100.00 for the first line, and than two months later they're charging 140.00 for the first line and than there is another month that they're charging close to 160.00 for the first line which is bring our bill over the 150.00 per month, we do not go over our minutes or do we have any extra's.

the damage is that they're rail roading me for more money that I do not have to fork out.

Rick Schloss of San Jose, CA August 27, 2008

Rick of San Jose CA (08/27/08)
I bought my iPhone because it appeared to me to be a total solution. No more phone, GPG, Palm Pilot, garbage cam but usable, MP3 player, and on and on. I get my new iPhone home and the first thing I notice is there is no instruction manual. I just went from a Motorola Razor to this every expensive phone with all the extras. I expected to have to plug it into the charger for the regular over night charge. When I do it shows that the battery is fully charged. I was a little hesitant to accept this so I called the AT&T store where I purchased it. The salesman said he was supposed to tell me that the phone came fully charged. So I plug my iphone into the computer and away it whirls.

Next thing I know I have an account set up and I'm downloading songs for the ipod side of my newly purchased iphone. Only problem is that I can't find the button to load the songs into my iphone. After two weeks of messing with this, I pay a visit to the local Apple store in the mall. The kid that greets me quickly shows me how to do what I want. I asked how was I supposed to know this? His response was, Well Apple expects you to be intuitive about this and wants you to just kinda play with the phone until you get a feel for it. Apple...you have to be kidding me. I am 59 years old.

J Davis of Brenham, TX August 25, 2008

Online, ATT Advertises 299 iPhone fine print says w2 year contract required. BUT once you call you find out that the only customer who can qualify for the 299 price is an existing customer who qualifies for an upgrade.

THIS IS DECEPTIVE ADVERTISING. It causes you to spend time and money to drive to the store since you can't actually get them on the phone. It also causes you to perhaps sign a contract for more than was advertised because you've already made the drive and mentally committed. You can't get an iphone from anyone else so you have to do business with ATT if you want an iPhone.
