In Sept. 1998 I signed up for long distance service for my company. I signed up based on a rate of 21.4 cents per minute to Germany, where I do a lot of calling. Each month, I checked my bill to make sure the rate was the same, and it has been.
Except yesterday I was told that a TCU was not a minute, as I thought it was. I called up Affinity and learned there were about 2.5 TCUs in a minute. So for nearly two years I have been paying about 50 cents a minute, not the 21.4 cents advertised. Affinity said the 21.4 cents was merely a two-month promotional price. No one told me this when signing up. I have the paperwork still, it is not mentioned.
Yesterday Affinity faxed me a three page explanation of what a TCU was and all the usage and non-usage charges added to the per minute rate. They wouldn't tell me what my rate actually was, but admitted it was much higher than 21.4 cents. It must be more than a coincidence that when I divide the TCUs into the time, it comes out to 21.4 cents. So of course I thought each TCU was a minute. I feel defrauded.
I hear there is a lawsuit against this practice in Ohio. Can we start one in Virginia?
