Wal-Mart Tries to Buff Its Image

Thomas G Williams of Vevay, IN November 3, 2007

We have been doing business in the Walmart auto dept. in Madison for many years.  Service has changed there. Recently my wife took our car for the full service oil change, and right after she noticed a tire that looked low. It was checked and only had 20 pounds of air. Also the fluids were not checked. No new window washer was added--and it was out.

We are seriously thinking of having our oil changes done somewhere else from now on. Walmart seems so untrustworthy.

Joanne of Frederick, MD November 1, 2007

I called Walmart today to see if the tire dept. had 4 tires that I received a quote on 10/31/07. Operator tried to connect with dept. No answer...paged multiple times...no answer...tried manager...no answer. It takes me 15-20 minutes to drive to the store and was trying to save time and gas if they didn't have the tires in stock. They could order them, and an appt could be set up. Have seen in recent times a lack of staff throughout store.

I had my oil changed on my Motor Home-Diesel at Walmart. While traveling on an RV trip, the oil filter backed off the engine block, causing us to lose most of the engine oil which caused extreme over heating. After road service, we found the next available Walmart where we had our engine serviced again, new oil and filter. The service attendant showed and gave us the reason for the problem. The old oil filter gasket was not removed from the block before the new oil filter was installed. We were given the old gasket and old oil filter and instructed to return to the Walmart in Las Vegas and file a claim, which we did.

The repair is done, the bill is 8,520.00 and CMI Insurance which represents Walmart, refuses to pay. Nevada Valve Train, on Betty Lane in Las Vegas is where it was repaired (702-643-8065).

Motor Home repair needs to be paid for in full before it can be released. I am a disabled Viet Nam Veteran on a limited income and cannot afford to pay the repair bill, and now it is accumulating storage fees.

On 10/6/07 I took my daughters car in for oil change, lube job and tires rotated and balanced. I was told by one of your expert technicians that he could'nt rotate the tires. I asked him why not, he snapped back because there worn out. Now the front tires were getting close to needing replacing, but they still had some useable thread left, thus the hole idea of rotating the front tire to the back. Then I asked about the back tires, he said they were shot too, the thread was all wavy.

I asked about the warranty cause the tires which I bought from the same store only had 30,000 miles on them and they were rated at 60,000 miles. He says there's no warranty if there's mechanical wear. BS. He claims that the front end is out of alignment. How does he know this, did he check the alignment, no. He says that the uneven wear on the back tires was from bad shocks.

Now I've been around a long time and I've never heard that excuse for that type of wear pattern. I've seen it on new vehicals and the cause has always been the same TIRE FAILURE.

I went to Wal-Mart to have an oil change and air filter change. They had a new technician working on my vehicle. The service was performed and I left. After driving for about less than an hour I heard a shaking in the engine compartment. After examining it I noticed that the clamp that holds the air filter compartment was loose and the plastic piece that holds the screw was broken.

I went to the store the following week and asked to speak with a manager. The manager, I am not sure of his training or his ability to examine and make a ruling on my vehicle, stated that Wal-Mart was not at fault and that I must have broken it myself.

After arguing with him he filed a complaint with the store insurance company and they called me to ask what happened. They never looked at my car and made a ruling in the favor of the store.

According to them, the store manager told them that they were not responsible for it for the following reasons: 1. the engine heat caused it to break 2. they think that the chain of custody of the car was faulty so someone else could have done it and they feel I am trying to blame them 3. the check engine light would have come on if they broke it, mind you that check engine light is not on, has never come on and it is still broken 4. vibrations caused it to break I did not ask for anything other than that they replace the screw and clamp the air filter house back in place. They flat out refused and claimed that I am the one at fault. I also believe that they fired the technician that worked on my car.

When I went back to the store the first technician I saw remembered me and apologized for the incident. After the manager showed up they all changed and started to blame me. All I want if for my housing unit to be fixed. That is it. Nothing more.

I know that this most likely will not be posted and I am fine with that. I just wanted to let people know that Walmart is a mass market company with under paid, under staffed, under qualified, unorganized workers in a lot of places and the workers deal with a large array of problems. Having worked for them and having many people try to blame they vehicle problems on Walmart to get there vehicle fixed for free. Because they are either to cheap or to broke to keep their vehicle in good operating order or buying junkers.

What most people do not tell you when they tell you about their vehicle problems is that they don't do it often enough or knew that they had a problem in the first place. They put it on the paper work that there is something wrong with the vehicle P.T.S. (pier to service) Some people will change there oil on their own at home to and mess the vehicle up and bring it to Walmart and then blame them. I have seen this for myself and had it admitted to me that they had someone else look at the car to change the oil but they couldn't do it. So they brought it to Walmart. So people will then try to make Walmart pay for their mistake.

And on a daily basis I have people that bring batteries in and say it has to be the battery but running the high dollar testing machines on it they still blame the battery and it couldn't be their vehicle and it has to be it. The people at the register doesn't care if it is good or bad. But we have to follow the policies that if the battery is good then we can not do anything for them.

Most cars need a expensive battery and people now of days being cheap as they are will want to get a 1 year battery that is not made for they vehicle and then blame walmart when it messes up their vehicle or doesn't work.

90% of everyone that comes into Walmart's Tire Lube and Express don't think about others. You will not be getting in and out in 20 minutes or less. They are not the only person waiting to be helped.

If you come in on a weekend or the first of the month you will not get out in less than a few hours unless you got very lucky. Walmart is not always to blame but sometimes they are.

Remember that the people working on the vehicles are under paid and paid by the hour. They have no reason to hurry up. If they do hurry up and they mess something up you will be there even longer. If you want to be rude to the people trying to work on the vehicle. Then do you think they will be nice to you? If you buy a junker or do not maintain your vehicle expect problems from it.

Went for an oil change. Cost me 50.00. Returned to vehicle and found drivers side window down and stuck. Tech forced window down and said he was not responsible for it. Upon inspection found that the transmission fluid was not checked and replaced (included in service plan). When questioned the tech claimed the fluid level was fine. It was not. It was one and a half quarts low, had I left thinking my fluid levels were fine, my transmission would have been blown, I specifically asked about the fluid because the truck was jerking all that morning. The tech stated that it was leaking a little but the levels were fine. I complained to the co-manager, she insisted the manager was not in. She got the tech to replace the fluid, had to watch him because he was about to put the wrong transmission fluid in my truck. It was clearly written on the container that it was for ford cars, I have a dodge truck. Meanwhile it is two days later and my vehicle is parked outside my door with a plastic bag covering my window, I can't drive it because I will get a ticket for obstructed view. I have called the claims department four times and left messages with the claims manager, she has not returned my calls. I am afraid that someone is going to break in or steal my vehicle. This is day four. No one has answered any of my calls.

I have a Ford Camper Van that I’ve had serviced at Wal-Mart. Now their price has increased to 44.00 for an oil change. This van is no different than a ¾ ton truck, yet Wal-Mart is sticking it to me.

Michelle of Rex, GA June 20, 2007

On 2/11/07, my 13 yr. old daughter and I had a near accident after my car stalled on one of the busiest highways in the Atlanta area. I called AAA and a tow truck was dispatched. It was about 11:30 PM. About 20 minutes later a truck was dispatched. I had my car towed to a local mechanic shop. The next morning I received a call from the mechanic and he stated he had some bad news, he said my car was starved for oil and as a result my engine was gone.

I explained I had an oil change at Wal-Mart Tire & Lube a little over a week ago and I could not see my car not having any oil in such a short period. He informed me that I should notify Wal-Mart immediately. I contacted Wal-Mart and explained my situation and the fact that I had just had an oil change and a tire rotation completed at their store. I was contacted the following day by CMI and asked where my car could be inspected. I was informed that I would have to have my mechanic break down the engine. I questioned who would pay for this and CMI stated, Wal-Mart would cover the cost once a determination was made.

I also had to rent a vehicle. I received a call a day or so later stating that CMI had completed their investigation and it indicated that Wal-Mart was not responsible for my loss. Frustrated, I began to research Wal-Mart Tire and Lube Centers and was shocked to learn of the tremendous history Wal-Mart has with cases just like mine with their Tire & Lube departments across this country.

I have learned that the engine for my car is a rather costly (5000.00), because the Axiom is not a common car. I have incurred expenses from simply have the engine broken down to rental fees to loss days of work just to name a few. I have not been able to afford the cost to have my engine replaced even at this time.

To date I have paid: *463.00-engine break down *40.00-additional mileage for tow truck * 1500.00-rental car fees * 500.00- loss time @ work * 1500.00-replacement vehicle And I am still paying finance charges on my vehicle as it sits in my garage.

I have taken my 2005 Tahoe to Wal-Mart for oil and lube service since it was new. I decided to change the oil myself for the first time and discovered three grease fittings on the steering that have never been greased.
