Melissa of Massapequa, NY, writes:
I bought my 2000 VW Cabrio this past March and since that time have had to bring my car in for service three times for the same exact reason. My car has stalled numerous times, the worst being the time I was attempting to make a left turn in the middle of a busy intersection. The second consistent problem I have been experiencing is when my car, while driving at side road and highway speeds, starts to decelerate, even while pushing on the gas pedal. The accelerator catches for a second and then decelerates again and so on and so forth. I have contacted the service department, the agent who sold me my car, and the manager of Sovereign Volkswagen. I was told my car was not a priority because I had brought it in as an emergency but did not have a scheduled appointment. That was as of 1/24/01 at 7am. I was never told how long it would need to stay there, and as of 12:30 today (1/25), it was still not looked at "because 3 people called out sick today". I informed them that this was my only means of transportation and this was the third time I had brought my car in for the same problem. I asked about a loaner car and they said they could get me a discount on a rental car. I declined the offer and asked them to fix my car as soon as possible and they stated it might take a few days. When we talked to the manager of Sovereign, he asked why we were calling and then stated, "If we were standing in a room with 10 people, you would not want me to fix your car". Then I was put on hold and was listening about how Sovereign wanted their customers to leave their dealership feeling satisfied with the award winning service they provide. When I called Volkswagen directly, they informed me that this is not the way I should have been treated. I believe I have a lemon, but am scared to keep driving my car waiting for the same problem to arise again. My life is worth more than $26,000. I am afraid to drive in my car. I get it fixed and the same problem arises again and again. The scariest time I have encountered yet, was when I was driving at night on Route 80 (in the left lane) when my speedometer fell and I couldn't accelerate and keep up with the traffic. The car behind me almost hit me and then started to flash its bright lights at me, telling me to move over. I was pressing the gas pedal, but it would catch for only a moment, and then decelerate even more. I couldn't move over because traffic was going to fast. I finally did get to the shoulder and turned off the car. By that time I was crying, shaking, and thinking about how many cars almost just hit me. I finally restarted it,and the car worked fine. However, I was afraid to get back on the road in fear of replaying that last incident and really getting hit by a car. This deceleration has happened at least 5 times. Melissa should see an attorney whose practice includes Lemon Law cases. Meanwhile, it might be a good idea to stay out of the left lane. |
