I purchased a used 2004 Jeep Wrangler from Wanner Ford in Ephrata PA. I guess mistake one was buying a used jeep from a Ford dealership. I over paid for the jeep. I also got an extra set of tires with the jeep and was told that when the jeep was traded in, these bigger tires were on the vehicle at that time. I didn't think much of it. I was excited to be getting a newer jeep and having the option to put on bigger tires if I wanted to. Well from day one, the jeep didn't handle / drive correctly. I was told that it was due to having bigger tires on it and that everything was fine. Well, this continued so I put on the even bigger tires thinking that would maybe fix the issue.
There was no change, it was still a bad ride. Then to add salt in the wound, so to speak, I got pulled over by a police office, who was very nice and understanding but I was told that my Jeep was illegal with the over-sized tires on it, since the tires stuck out past the wheel wells on the jeep. So I removed the tires and thought to myself, why did I get these tires in the first place. That is when I realized the four tires that dealership had on the jeep when I bought it were all different tires. I mean different brands of tires but all the tires were the same size. So I took the jeep in complaining that the steering was still an issue. Sure enough, now they came back and said yes, there is an issue with the stabilizing bars in the front and they will replace the bars since it is covered under the extended Warranty I purchased.
I was happy to see the warranty covered the steering issue but I was also having an issue with the door lock not working on the driver's side. Well, that was not covered under the warranty and that alone cost me over $300 to fix. So I left the dealership questioning what I got myself into. The next day, I got in the jeep to go to work, closed the door and the door handle came way off and I heard a screw drop down inside the door. My opinion is that the door was not put back on correctly in the first place, then the issue came back with the door not unlocking so I had to get in on the passengers side and move to the driver's side. I took the jeep in a second time the door issue was corrected but the jeep still was not steering correctly. Again, I was told it was the over sized tires on the jeep. I didn't have the money to go out and buy 4 new tires so I figured I would try and make the best of it.
Then I lost my job in OCT and made up my mind that I just wanted to get rid of this money pit that I felt like I purchased and move on. The first thing I wanted to do was cancel the extended warranty I purchased, so I could get a little money back in my pocket. I contacted Barry at the dealership, figured that since he deals with the warranties in service he would know how to cancel the warranty. He was very rude and seemed like he didn't want to be bothered with helping me. Finally, he tells me that I need to contact the bank that I have my car loan through so the bank can cancel the warranty since I have the warranty financed.
So I got on the phone, called my bank, spoke to 3 different people and all of them knew nothing about this practice and were unable to help me. So I tried calling the warranty company and could not get through to anyone, it was all automated. So I went back to the car dealership, spoke to the person I bought the Jeep from. He directed me to Josh in finance and Josh tells me that the dealership has to cancel the warranty. Josh was busy when I was there and said he would cancel the warranty and call me later that night with a dollar figure on how much I would be getting back on the canceled warranty. He also said the money I would get back on the warranty would go to the bank and be put on the balance of the car loan. I was fine with that since I was going to be getting rid of the jeep in the next few days anyways and figured if anything was over, it would go into my account.
I sold the jeep to Stoney Ledge Auto Sales in Ephrata. Stoney Ledge deals in Used Jeeps and I should have gone to them in the first place, but I was trading in my beloved Mustang at the time and didn't know they took trade in vehicles. So I took a big loss on the jeep but I wanted to just unload it. Stoney Ledge also took the extra set of over sized tires off my hands and after reviewing the tires, they said they can't use them because the tires didn't have much tread on them and really shouldn't be on the vehicle to begin with.
But at least, they are out of my garage. Upon inspecting the jeep I was asked if I knew the jeep had a lift kit on the front but no lift kit on the back. I started to laugh and told them the story on how I thought the jeep was steering funny and how the dealership replaced stabilization bars in the front. They just laughed with me and they also felt sorry that I went through this ordeal. They gave me a fair trade in but again I still took a loss but was happy to wash my hands of this lemon.
So now, the jeep is gone and I am waiting for the money to get here from the warranty cancellation. Two months go by and nothing has happened, no word from anyone at the Ford dealership with a status. So I contact the Ford dealership asking what the status is on my money from the warranty cancellation. Josh said he needs to look into the issues and tells me the check is coming to the dealership and that he will have the money in a few days and then he will get a check off to me. I said isn't the money going to the bank and he tells me no, they get the money. This is not what I was told before. A week goes by and nothing comes in the mail so I call again, leave messages and no returned calls.
So now, I stop in the Ford dealership to see what is going on. I am told I will have a check in the mail tomorrow and that the funds were moved into the dealership's account. Again, another week goes by and no check. I called again and no returned calls, so I stopped in yet again because I have nothing better to do with my time. I am now told there is an issue with the warranty company and the dealership is getting all the issues worked out. Well, it got to the point where I was told to stop in tomorrow; "I will have a check for you." This went on for 4 days in a row. Finally, the owner overheard me in the show room and got involved. It helped some but even he seemed like he didn't want to be bothered. It seemed like he just wanted me out of his hair and didn't want to listen to anything I had to say. I guess because I no longer drive a Ford, he wants nothing to do with me.
I finally got a check last night from the owner but the check I received was a lot less than what I was told I would be getting a few months ago by Josh. The owner seemed like he just didn't want to be bothered with me. I think what happened was, I was told the warranty was canceled by Josh and in fact, it wasn't. The dealership finally canceled the warranty a day or two ago and that would explain getting less of a refund than I was originally told. It's funny but I have seen reviews on this dealership out on the web and I see people complaining about getting a warranty and trying to collect on it. I am glad this is over and done with. I learned a harsh lesson and I hope that buyers think twice about going to Wanner Ford for anything. I should have stuck with Keller Brothers. My fiance slid off the road twice in the jeep on rainy roads so she didn't want to drive the jeep anymore. I know I took a hit with the warranty I purchased and took a loss when I sold the jeep.
