Here's what Nemet says about itself on its Web site: "The Nemet Auto Group is an automotive marketing organization led by the Nemet family since 1916. For 86 years, the Nemet family has represented many of the world's largest and most prestigious automobile manufacturers selling well over half a million cars internationally."
Sounds great, but some of Nemet's customers aren't so impressed, as the complaints in this section indicate. A selection of assorted recent complaints appears below, while categorized beefs are listed to the right.
Deborah of Whitestone, NY July 20, 2006
In the NY Newsday, during the month of July 2006, there was an advertisement by Nemet Motors for a 2006 Hyundai Elantra for 9295 excluding tax, title, and MV fees. The other fine print indicated that Prices incl. all mfr rebates & incentives to dlr. Owner loyalty rebate up to 1,000, college grad rebate 400, active military rebate 500. Since I did not qualify for any of the afroementioned rebates, I surmised that I would have to pay 11,195 for the car plus the taxes, title, and MV fees. Of course, that was NOT the case at the dealership.
I eventually agreed to pay 12,329 (which included delivery fees and dealer prep fees not mentioned in the advertisement)plus taxes, title, and MV fees. Then, I was kept waiting for several hours--and was even sent out to have lunch--while allegedly waiting for my car to be delivered to the dealership, all before having seen the finance manager, Seth. Despite having arrived at the dealership at 9:15 AM, I did not see the finance manager until after 2:00 PM. At that time, I was asked to sign a piece of paper assigning a 1000 rebate to the dealership. This rebate had not been mentioned previously.
I was told that the price of the car was actually 13,329, but with this rebate, I would be able to buy it for 12,329. I tried to protest, but eventually realized that it was only going to cost me 86 more in taxes, so I agreed to go ahead. Then, however, I was told that I was required to purchase a 1995 package in order to complete the sale. This package would entitle me to receive the difference between the amount paid to me by my insurance company and the actual amount to buy a new Elantra should my car be stolen between the date of purchase through 2010. I said I had no interest in purchasing such a package. I was again told that I had to purchase the package.
I then asked that the sales manager I had dealt with earlier in the day be brought in, since he had never mentioned that the purchase of such a package would be required. The sales manager, Mr. Korgut, came in and stated that in order for him to make money on the sale, I had to pay the additional 1995 for something I didn't want and which had not previously been mentioned. I told him, if that was the case, then I wanted to cancel the deal. He handed me a cancellation form that indicated I would be charged a 750 cancellation fee. The dealership had already charged a deposit of 2500 to my credit card, so I felt trapped. Eventually, Mr. Korgut acted like he was doing me a favor, and said that I could buy the car--without the package--for an additional 900. After a lot of arguing about why I had to pay a penalty for refusing to purchase a package I didn't want and had never agreed to accept, I was allowed to complete the sale of the car for an additional 500, for a total of 13,829 plus taxes, title, and MV fees. In sum, Nemet's advertising is obviously deceptive, as are their pricing practices.
I was misled by the newsapaper advertisement and was essentially forced to pay more for the car I purchased than I intended to, because the company had already charged a deposit to my credit card and told me that they would keep 750 of my money if I wanted to cancel the deal. I believe I was purposely misled on an auto deal. Here is the scenario: I am a young woman looking to buy a used car with a cash limit of 8500. I found an ideal car, but I continued to look around a bit before I settled. I walked into the used car lot at a Nissan dealership. I told the salesman straight off that I had a very limited budget of 8000 and did not want to finance at all. When he continued to make offers I told him I had already found something at that price a few blocks away. He told me that it wasn't a good deal for a 60,000-mi, 2001 Corolla. He can offer me 10,500 for a brand new nissan sentra because they had to liquidate the 2006 models since the 2007 models are coming in. But I cannot pay in cash otherwise it would not be at 10,500 because they would not receive a kickback from the bank, therefore if I want that special deal I'll have to finance.
It was an offer I couldn't refuse.
I went back the next day 6/12/06 to sign the papers. I didn't realize that I was paying 20,000 until I got home and analyzed the deal more closely. They charged me 4300+ for something I thought was free, maintainence etc. During the signing of the papers which they have on audio and visual recording, I saw those figures and asked what it was. He said that's what those things are worth. I said but I am not paying for it. He then said yes, which I took to mean correct or affirmative.
When I went back to complain the 13th. The financial salesman said that package was not optional. When my fiance asked then what was the point of getting a deal if you end up paying the same amount? He answered and we have it on audio recording you are not going to buy it under the cost, we are not gonna sell you a car under cost. I know I was purposely misled from the start. At the price I bought it I could've bought a 2007. I settled for the color of a sentra I didn't want, from a company I never thought of buying from, because I was getting the leftovers for the special deal. There was 695 unaccounted for on the contract. When I asked about it on 6/13 the finance manager said that was the destination fee. Upon examination of the contract, next to destination fee was printed N/A. I want to get my 4300+tax refunded, and if possible also the destination fee eliminated or reduced. I went to Nemet to buy a Vovlvo XC90 but after negotiating was not able to get the price I wanted so I left. Two days later they called me back and offered me an even better price over the phone so I went to Nemet the next day to finalize the deal. After getting my insurance, license plates etc. and about 2 hours of waiting for the "finance guy" I went to finish the deal.
This "finance guy" gave me a ton of papers to sign. He put his numbers into the computer and called his manager over, the manager said he "forgot" a 300 fee and needed to add this in. I told him we had agree on a price but I was still getting a great deal even with the small fee so I eventually agreed to the fee. Then he gave me the paperwork which was over 2000 higher than I had calculated for an after tax-cost.
I eventually found a 2000 fee for a VIP Platinum Program in the mess of paperwork. I asked about this and he said "The sales guy never talked to you about this, I guess its because he's new and forgot but he should have told you about this. This is a great deal and this is the only way we make some money off the deal." He then explained that it was 2000 for Wheel & Tire coverage in case I got a flat or hit a pothole and blew out a tire, it would be covered.
I was furious at this point but I had been there so long and had set up insurance and everything else that they made me totally comitted to the deal. Thus, the great deal became an o.k. deal. I could have probably gotten a slighly better price if I had got up and left and went somewhere else but they had suckered me in and made me commit so much time that I just did the deal.
Now I am trying to cancel the VIP Platinum Program Membership and am having trouble doing that. On the terms of the contract with a company called API (Automotive Professionals, Inc.) it says under terms that I can cancel and receive a pro-rated share of the price which at this point is about 1600. It specifically says to provide API with a copy of the contract and a cancellation letter, which I did. API now says I have to contact Nemet which I find ridiculous. Their own contract states "To Cancel this Contract, the Contract Holder shall provide the Administrator with the following:" and at the top of the contract it defines Administrator as "Automotive Professionals, Inc." So I provided everything they need and Nemet isn't giving me anything. I think they sell this VIP Program to lots of people.

I had been given a price of 13,500 for the Elantra GLS with everything included, taxes,etc...so i put 6,000 down and then he sent me into the finance department. I am a single woman and was alone and i feel they took advantage of me. I was also having a stressful day and was pressured that if i didn't buy the car that night they would not honor that price. Since i had gone to another dealer a few days earlier and they had quoted me 15,690, i figured this was a great deal.
So they passed me onto the finance department and the guy in there was throwing all these papers at me, sign this, sign that, sign this, etc.. I noticed that they were adding taxes and other things, so i complained and talked to the manager and i was very upset and he said okay he would give me another 1,000 off, but HE did add the tax, so i said okay. But the finance guy kept telling me about this VIP package and i didn't want it and he kept saying, you have to take it, it's only 15 a month, i said i don't want it.
Well i saw this figure of like 20,000 and he didn't explain it to me, but i also saw my price of 12,800 so i figured that was the bottom line price of the car, but instead it was put in the amount to be financed, even after i left a down payment of 6,000. I didn't notice he added 4,999 for VIP Platinum Package for ETCH PROTECTION program whatever that is for total of 4,499. I did initial yes for that, but i was being handed so many papers i trusted the guy, but he NEVER EXPLAINED ALL THE CHARGES TO ME.
The economic damage is that i will have to pay 23,200 instead of 13,500.

I purchased a vehicle last April. it was advertised a s a 2001 SAAB 9-3. The salesman promised that no down payment needed and that the car has a warranty. At signing I had to put a down payment and after purchase the car had no warranty. Shortly after purchase the car started having problems (engine Light,....)took the car for service several time and problem still exists. When I wanted to sell the car a couple months ago, I pulled a Carfax on it and the car turned out to be a 2000 SAAB, instead of a 2001, the price I paid was for the newer model. All registration and title paperwork shows the vehicle is a 2001. Management was contacted several times and their only solution was that they will switch the paperwork to a 2000, with no compensation whatsoever.
I went to several dealers to trade the vehicle in. but that was impossible because they said I am upside down on the price of the vehicle and the only way to get out of it is to come up with thousands of dollars. I also had to pay for several repairs from my own pocket for a car I have not owned for a year yet.

On Tuesday, December 27, 2005 I went into Nemet motors to purchase a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe that I found advertised on Auto-Trader.com. I called prior to coming down and was assured the car was available for sale. As was to be expected, they played the tried and true "bait & switch". The car was sold, and gone, right before I got there. This vehicle was an excellent deal at 11,995. I explained to the sales manager that I was paying cash and needed to complete the sale for 11,500, tax and everything included. I was assured that we could work something out and was shown a used 2005 Santa Fe (of course it was top of the line).
The sales manager came back with a price of 17,995. I laughed. After leaving, returning, & much haggling, we agreed to a gross total of 17,000, including tax and all charges, with a 1000.00 down payment. I would finance the balance with no prepayment penalties. The sales associate wrote out the sales agreement with 17,000 as the net price and I questioned it. He went back to the sales manager who agreed that I should not sign the agreement that they would correct it and have it ready for me when I picked up the car on Thursday. This is not the 1st time I've purchased a car from a dealer and was bothered by the lack of professionalism from this staff. Every question I asked, from transferring my registration to warranty info was answered with "Don't worry about it the finance guy will explain it all to you."
I had a 1:00 appointment with the finance manager on Thursday and, finally, at 3:45 was ushered into another gentleman's office who was called in to help me out. To make an already too long story shorter he started handing me paperwork to sign. One of the forms was a type of insurance granting me 15,000 toward the purchase of a new car providing my car was stolen and not recovered. When I asked if the dealership was giving me this from the kindness of their hearts the gentleman then asked if anyone explained my deal to me. I thought that was the finance department's job.
I was approved for financing, but no one ever asked how much I was financing. With a gross total of 17,000 I was looking to put a total downpayment of 12K, financing 5k over twelve months. When the finance guy told me my payments would be 943.00 per month I knew something was wrong. I was being charged 17,500 for the car, plus all their misc. fees, extra insurance I didn't agree to, additonal warranties and taxes. Even the base price for the car was wrong.
The sales manager and salesman were called in and I was told sorry, but they could not honor the deal even though this is what I was quoted. I am now going on a 4 hour stay at the dealership with a 5 year old in tow. The sales manager told the sales man to take my file to billing and they would credit my card for the 1k down payment right there. As if this isn't enough, I received a call exactly 1 week later from the salesman asking for my credit card # and SS # so they could issue me a credit to my account. I told him in no uncertain terms he was nuts to think I would give that info over the phone. The salesmanager called me right back and told me I had to come down with the card if I wanted my refund because the info was torn off their copy of the receipt and they didn't have it to issue the credit.
When I questioned why it was taking a week he apologized and said they were only done once a week. When I told him the last time he apologized to me was a week ago and it should have been done then he told me to stop yelling at him if I want him to help me get my money back. This was insulting and erroneous as I didn't even raise my voice to him. This again attests to the unprofessionalism of this dealership and I would never recommend using them to anyone.
Alan of Jamaic, NY November 12, 2005
