Nemet Chevrolet Plans Appeal in Consumer Site Suit

Here's what Nemet says about itself on its Web site: "The Nemet Auto Group is an automotive marketing organization led by the Nemet family since 1916. For 86 years, the Nemet family has represented many of the world's largest and most prestigious automobile manufacturers selling well over half a million cars internationally."

Sounds great, but some of Nemet's customers aren't so impressed, as the complaints in this section indicate. A selection of assorted recent complaints appears below, while categorized beefs are listed to the right.

Svetlana of Brooklyn, NY April 11, 2007

I went to purchase a car from Nemet Motors after I saw what appeared to be a good deal in the Newspaper, boy was I wrong! I purchased a 2003 altima from them thinking I was getting a good deal. It took them a very long time to get the paper work ready. By the time they were done I was restless and my head hurt.

I sat down with the finance manager Sid and this is when he started making all kinds of promises. He rushed me through a whole bunch of paper saying that since it was so late (9:30 PM) I had to have extra warranties added on the car for me to be able to drive off that same day. He told me to call him the next day to get all the figures. I called the next day all the way until the night. This guy seems to never get a break because he was never able to answer my calls (ya right). He was avoiding me that whole day, so I was starting to get a little nervous because from the looks of the contract I would owe 25,000 for a 14,000 dollar car.

That night my father and me decided to drive to the dealership, Sid told me that everything was fine all the warranties will be taken off when I sign the final contact. He said my final contract was locked away and that I could come back the next day to sign it. When I got there the next day he typed up the contract in my face, which meant that he lied about it being locked away.

All the extras were still in the new contact, so I told him that I wasn't going to sign it and I didn't want the car. He told me I had no choice and that I had to keep all the warranties. I started crying in the office, so the GM Scott was called in. They promised to take off one of the many extended warranties that were added, but I knew that all they was take away some money from the amount owed and added it to the finance fee.

They made me feel like I had no choice but to take that offer because it was for a few more months which made my monthly payments more affordable, so I left with the new contract. Come to find out they never cancelled the first contract, so I'm being billed from both Nissan and M & T bank.

They have been telling me now for the past few weeks that they are fixing the problem and not to worry, but I am still showing an outstanding balance for both banks.

Not only that, I took my car to my mechanic to find out that the car was in a serious accident which the car appeared to have frame and bumper guard damage. Once again I had to make another trip to this dealership. When I got there the GM Scott told me that they would fix anything and then told his mechanics to put everything back together. He then told me that I can get a lawyer and in five years he will see if I ever get anything. I started crying again I front of my one and a half year old son.

Till this day nothing has been fixed with the car nor was the other loan voided. I don't know what to do; there is no way I can pay for two loans and if I don't my excellent credit will be destroyed.

Emotionally this situation has taken a huge toll on me. I can not eat, sleep, or think straight. These people have ruined my life.

Louella of New York, NY April 3, 2007

We were trying to lease a car. Unfortunately, we got too excited so they took advantage by adding a lot of extras to the car without informing us. These extras had my initials though they were not my handwriting. We were surprised when we first got the statement which states that we are PURCHASING it at 431.00 for 6 yrs which amounts the car to be 30K when it was originally only 16,800.00. When we received it, we went back to tell them that we don't want to buy it, just lease. They passed us from one person to another then eventually said that they will do something about it. True enough, up to this day it still states the same amount. We tried to return the car as it is costing us too much but they don't want to and they were treating us without respect at all. They are very rude and we feel that we are so aggravated.

Jim of Floral Park, NY January 22, 2007

i purchased a new 2007 Nissan pathfinder se for a fair price with a remote starter and a passive alarm as the only extras. I was told I could have the car in three days. I needed to register the car in Massachusetts, however the dealer said they would take care of everything there would be no problem. Part of my total price for the car included 299.00 for plates, registration etc..

After 5 days I never heard from the dealer so I called to find out if there was a problem. I was told there was a problem getting the plates from Massachusetts. I was told the plates would be in New York tomorrow. On Saturday I called the dealer to find out if there was a problem. the dealer told me to call my insurance company to take care of the problem myself.

At this point I still never received any call from the dealer to inform me of any problem - I made all the calls. On Monday I once again called the dealer and Len R asked me for the insurance companies phone number so he could call them. I asked him why he didnt have the number and why he hasnt made any calls so far - he passed me on to his manager who was upset with me that I was so agitated about still not having my car which I paid for and was promised me in three days.

He blamed the insurance company in Massachusetts and told me to stop asking why and to just move forward. I called on Wednesday and still no car, no plates, no phone call from the dealer explaining anything. With each of my calls I became more and more angry, which only seemed to annoy the staff at Nemet, who passed my phone calls on to one another.

Jeff L., the sales manager, continued to blame the Mass. insurance company and continued to express annoyance with me and my questions regarding his dealership's promises, lack of courtesy calls and incompetence. He then asked me for my insurance companies phone number. I asked him why nobody has the phone number and he responded stop asking why and move forward. I asked him where the follow up was, how many phone calls were made to Mass., were faxes sent, were any e-mails sent, were registered letters sent? He, of course had no answers and continued to get annoyed with me that i had the audacity to be upset.three weeks later.

Almost one month later no car. I now threatened to cancel the deal. I was told that was not an option -- the contract states only after a month could we cancel. I had three days to go.  I was told by Len the car would absolutely, positively be ready tomorrow. On Friday, i said i have been hearing promises for a month now -- Jeff L.  told me to move forward, the car will be here tomorrow.

Guess what -- no car on Friday. I was now told Saturday for sure.  Wow,  the car arrived Sat. two days before the 30 days expired. I took the car home -- now what? No owners manual, no remote keys to lock, unlock -- they forgot. No apology, no phone calls, no explanations. Went all the way back to get my remotes and manual, took the car home -- guess what? The remote starter does not work! Called Len, who couldnt understand why it didnt work. I asked him after all the trouble we have had over this past month he didn't make sure my remote keys, manual were included and especially that everything worked!

My husband and I purchased a used Nissan Altima approx 4 months ago from Nemet Motors. The months went by and we never received the vehicle's registration. Every time my husband and called for visited them, he was told the he will recive it soon. We never did. The last time my husband visited Nemet, which was 2 weeks ago, he was told that the vehicle has a lien and they are trying to work on that and will should get the registration in a week. Again, we never did. I received a call today from one of their sales rep, Shakim. I was told the car was reported stolen and we can be pulled over by the cops if we drive the car. Neither my husband or I have reported that our car have been stolen. Our car is currently parked at home.

Its so getting tiring and frustrating, to go back and forth with these people. Still trying to obtain our car's registration.

I went to buy a listed Nissan Xterra...they had it on their website for about 16,000. They showed me a newer one for 17,500. I thought I was getting this great deal. It was myself and my mother since she helped co-sign this car for me. We just happened to know the dealer and thought he was really going to help us out. We waited there for about 4 hours getting the paper work and car ready.

When I got home, I looked at the paperwork and saw they overcharged me...to the tune of 31,000!!!! I kid you not!!! So we went back the next day, and they shaved off 6,000...ONLY! They added all this other crap onto the deal. I think it was just the confusion that they throw at you that made us take the deal. Now I'm stuck with this ridiculous payment of over 500 for a used car.

Al of Bronx, NY December 1, 2006

On June 8th, 2006, I bought a 2003 Chevy Astro Van from Nemet Auto. On that day , I also purchased a 4-year extended warranty for 2,800, with the understanding that I could cancel it at any time for a full refund, as long as I didn't use it. Approximately 3 weeks later, in July,I called Nemet Auto and spoke to Mr. Lou Pirro (a manager) and told him that I wanted to cancel that extra warranty. He told me it would not be a problem and it would take about 6 weeks.

Since that time, I have spoken to him at least a half dozen times and he has assured me it was being taken care of. I also left numerous messages on his phone, all with no satisfaction. Here it is, early Dec.,2006, and the warranty still has not been canceled. All I want is my 2800 returned to me.

Euphemia Soo Hoo of Whitestone, NY October 17, 2006

My son had seen a 2005 Toyota Camry advertised at Nemet Motors online site for 17,995. My family went to the dealership and dealt with Shakim aka Donald Butler. We specifically told him we wanted to pay no more than a certain amount for the car and did not want to haggle back and forth. We arrived at a price of 16,500, put down a deposit of 2000 on our credit card and agreed to finance the balance since we know that the dealership gets some kind of a credit if we finance through them. We would have financed through them to get their credit and we would have paid of the loan immmediately. So we shook on the deal and Shakim said we would have to wait around for the finance guy.

Well, did we have to wait!! We waited close to 5 hours!!! By the time we saw the finance guy, Lou, it was 10 pm, my family hadn't eaten anything and we were ready to sign all the necessary papers, just get the car and leave. Lou had all the paper work prepared and we were signing everything until the last document - the finance agreement. It was approximately 5000 over our agreed upon price!! We questioned Lou about the price and his response was - didn't your salesperson explain the package to you? NO, NOT AT ALL!

Shakim and the Manager was called over and of course Shakim and the Manager explained that in order for us to buy the car at that price, we had to buy into this package. We explained to the Manager we were not aware of this, NOTHING was explained to us and if the Manager cannot sell us the car for the agreed upon price, do not waste their time or ours any longer. Of course, the Manager could not arrive at a price even close to the original. The deal fell through, we made sure any documentation with our information was torn up but the DMV plates and registration had to be voided. We thanked them and Lou was the only gentleman to apologize and shake our hands. Shakim was already long gone.

As we were driving home that night, we realized we did not get our 2000 credit card deposit back. The next day we returned to Nemet Motors to get our deposit back. The person at the desk, I think his name was Alex, tried to make an alternate deal with us. I really did not want to buy this car now that I had such a bad taste in my mouth from the night before so we insisted in getting our deposit back. That's when Alex gave us this 750 cancellation fee form to sign! We were not going to sign that!!! Alex made some calls to the General Manager and we ended up paying 17,000 for the car, financing at 8.95% (we would originally have qualified for 7%) and an agreement to pay 3 months and then pay off the loan!

That was not the end of it! Nemet Motors agreed to replace the driver side weatherstripping and supply us with an additional key and 2 keyless remotes. Shakim told us to drop the car by anytime. Well, for the next two weeks my son was dropping the car by anytime after calling Shakim to ask if the parts were in. Shakim just kept on giving excuse after excuse. Finally, I called Shakim and told him to stop giving us the run around (to put it nicely). He promised me that if I bring in the car on Tuesday at 10am, I should be out of there within 2 hours. I told him I was taking off of work to bring the car in and if the car was not finished by 12 noon, I was going to lodge a complaint with Consumer Affairs and the BBB.

I called on Tuesday before I went to Nemet Motors to make sure the parts were in house. No one knew about it of course and Shakim told me to just bring the car in. I did and was told to go get something to eat or sit in the lounge. It turns out they were going to install an after market entry system. I bumped into Lou the finance guy and explained why I was there. He made some phone calls and questioned what the problem was. He told them to get me the genuine Toyota parts from the Toyota dealer-down Hillside Ave.! until 12 noon. His new excuse was that they would have to order the parts from Toyota - up the block! So feeling satisfied that I was not going to get a generic product, I waited until 12 noon.

At noon, Shakim told me the parts had to be ordered from Toyota down the block and to bring the car back!! Why wasn't the parts ordered in the first place, 2 weeks ago?!! Anyway, my son brought the car back a few days later after I made sure with Toyota that they did in fact order and receive the parts. They did replace the weather stripping, cut us an extra key but those mechanics at Nemet Motors could not figure out how to program the keyless remotes. My son was able to figure it out!! What a harrowing, horrible, stressful experience!!! I will never, ever deal with Nemet Motors again!!! And no one else should either unless they want to get ripped off and want to wait 2-3 weeks for any kind of satisfaction. The only saving grace out of this whole situation is Lou, the finance guy.

Valerie of New York, NY September 29, 2006

I had a signed lease agreement with nemet motors for a volvo. my sales associate was adrian sylvester and a manger by the name of mr. hoffman had approved and signed off on this agreement. when i went to pick up the vehicle two days later the finance person (i don't remember his name) asked for an additional 2,500. because of the discrepency, a manager named Vince was called in and he stated that he is refusing to honor the signed lease agreement unless we give an additional 2,500. when i asked for my copy of the signed agreement Vince refused to give it back to us and at this point he started using physical intimidation to get us to leave the dealership to prevent us from having our copy back.

Vince told us he will shred the documents (again illegal). when we insisted on the copy, several men used physical intimidation and told us to get out of the dealership. several men walked toward us and physically intimidated us out of the door so we would not have the chance to get our documents. profanities were used towards us. we had also left a 100 cash deposit - which we have a receipt for. when we asked for our money back they refused to give it to us while proceeding to push us out of the dealership.

This company has illegally renegged on a signed, legally binding contract. i was left without a vehicle because i had arranged to return my vehicle on the day i was picking up this new one. i lost several days from work because i had to take time out and go to a different dealiership, get a new car, renegotiate, and then pick up the vehicle as well (i had already taken days off from work to do this process with nemet). i am a chiropractor and am the only one working in my office. i make approximately 2,000 per day - and when i am forced not to be here i make 0. so i have literally lost several thousands of dollars worth of business. we were also physically intimidated. they have illegally kept my 100 deposit.

Bingxie of Flushing, NY September 18, 2006

I went to the dealer asking for the 2006 Nissan Sentra they had advertised on the Newspaper for for 13,465. 5072 down with 8493 finance, which seem reasonable for the car. So I checked out the car, decided on it and requested finace. Everything seemed fine at first until we start going over the finace paper until the person Seth who is the finace person putted some unwanted item on the invoice Such as 5Y/15K ETCH PRO For 2999 Car Alarm 795 Which was never asked for nor told during the sale stage. I almost missed when I was signing all the other paper. When I specifically asked about the item, Seth took out the car alarm but insisted on that the ETCH PRO is the company policy for all new cars. I regret I didn't just walked out there, then. But I thought that was some insurance deduction. I was suspicious at the dealership and after searched on the internet and found this site. It confirmed that the whole thing is a scam.

Kester L.m Allicock of Huntington, NY July 30, 2006

My girlfriend and I went into Nemet Moters looking to get a quote on a nissan altima. We were lookting to spend anywhere between 12,000 and 15,000. We were both apporached by a salesman by the name of Frank. Who told us that if we bought an 2006 nissan altima today he would give it to us for 15,000.Knowing the prices of these cars my girlfriend and I said this is a great deal so we followed frank into the showroom. Where he proceeded to get all of our info.

Then he looks at his master sheet which has a list of all the cars on the lot with the marked up retail prices. Then proceeds to tell us that the car is 21,000 and he is only allowed to go down two thousand. So he walks over to his manager Mario and Mario comes back and says I will go to 18,999. I said no way and gave him a really low number which upset him. Mario gave me a closing offer of 16,999 and said he would prove that he is only making a 600 profit. I said ok but we didnt go on with the deal because my girlfriend didnt like the fact that we were going back and forth with each other.

So we are offered a 2005 Altima with 16000 miles Leather interior for 14,400 by Mario the sales manager. By the time my girlfriend gets approved for the loan and we go see Seth who is doing the financial end of the deal the price of the car goes up 2,600 from 14,400 to 17,000. Seth never told us this. He just wanted us to sign papers. I left the office to go see how the car looked. It was dirty as hell in the inside and the outside had a light wash and poor wax job. After complaining about the poor service I'm receiveing I was told to bring the car back later on to have it detailed. I was very unhappy about that. I was later told by Mario that he didnt know that the price of the car went up and I could give the car back or take the purchase. I spoke over the whole thing with my girlfriend and we decided to take the car.
