Midas Responds

Chuck of Cave Creek AZ writes (1/31/01):
Our Isuzu Rodeo was making a raspy sound. We took it to the dealer to diagnose the problem. They confirmed that it was the muffler, but said we could save money by taking it to a muffler shop. We took the car to Midas, explained the noise and asked that they install a new muffler, which they quoted at $129. They called us hours later and said that the problem wasn't a muffler, but the manifold. Hesitantly, we ok'd the work, which they quoted at about $400.

When picking up the car, we were told that there was more labor than expected, so the total charges were $500, $50 parts and $450 labor. Not happy about the charges, but glad to have the problem fixed and done with. We picked up the car after hours to find that the car makes the same exact noise. It runs no better and now we doubt if the manifold even needed to be "fixed." We now have a vehicle in the same condition, charged for work that didn't fix our specific problem.

Judith of Hamden NY writes (11/26/00):
In replacing my exhaust system on my 97 Jetta, first Midas put a muffler on that had insufficient baffles and was louder than a Camarro. When I protested Jeff insisted that the second muffler was the correct one. It in fact was a health hazard as it rested just under the front seat. Finally jeff said that he would meet me at the Volkswagon dealer (after threatening him with court because he refused to refund my money) to see what the problem was and that Midas would pay for the correct system.

Volkswagon said that it was the most ridiculous thing they had ever seen. Jeff was embarrassed and again said to order the correct system and that Midas would pay for it. By then i had lost 3 days work. By the time the parts came in Jeff no longer worked at Midas. The new manager was very nasty and only refunded the $191 for the original Midas system and gave me a very difficult time stating that that was the correct system. I told him that I wasn't a mechanic but I did know that my exhaust does not exit the side of my car. He finally gave me my money and the money for the pipe that they had ruined trying to cob something together.

Dick of Amarillo, TX, writes:
I took my car in to have a new muffler installed. I ordered the one-year warranted muffler as I had a 88 model car. The price quoted me was $29.95 which was o.k. I was called at work later and the manager told me that the exhust pipe in front of the muffler was in such bad shape that he was afraid to install a muffler onto it and also that the muffler had "two or three patches on it'.

I have owned this car for several years and it is a two-owner car and I know the person who owned before me. It had 50,000 miles on it when I bought it from him, who had purchased it brand new. There were no "patches' on the muffler ever and the exhust pipe had caked mud on it from the dirt road I live on. The rear exhust pipe was all right as it had been replaced by Midas at this same address about three years before.

I was told by the manager thathe could replace the pipe and muffler for $119.99. After I told him not to do anything that I would come and pick it up he then told me that, well he could do it for $89.99. Since the only thing that had ever been done to the exhust system on this car was the back exhust I feel like I was being ripped off. If he had not mentioned "patches on the muffler" I might have believed him.
